THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP
• The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the world’s premier jockeys’ competition, a unique event where three top riders
in each of four teams - Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and The Girls - battle against each other
in a thrilling six-race showdown.
• The Girls team is captained by Canada’s leading female rider Emma-Jayne Wilson, riding at the Dubai Duty Free
Shergar Cup for the fourth time. Joining her is Britain’s Hayley Turner, experiencing her ninth Dubai Duty Free Shergar
Cup, and newcomer Sammy Jo Bell, the apprentice who has been firing on all cylinders in 2015.
• Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy, familiar to British racegoers from his days with Godolphin, leads the Rest Of The
World team, which also features his compatriot Blake Shinn, both embarking on their first Dubai Duty Free Shergar
Cup, and Japanese legend Yutaka Take, who is back for the seventh time.
• Team Europe is captained by French ace Olivier Peslier, about to enjoy his fourth Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. He
is accompanied by Adrie de Vries from the Netherlands, riding at the competition for the second year in succession,
and newcomer Vincent Cheminaud, who boasts the unique distinction of riding winners at the very highest level both
on the Flat and over jumps in France.
• Dual British champion jockey Jamie Spencer, at his fourth Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, captains the Great Britain
& Ireland team which consists of reigning Irish champion jockey Pat Smullen, who has participated once before, and
newcomer Graham Lee, who has turned from being a top-class jump jockey to a leading Flat rider and gained his first
Royal Ascot success this year in the Group One Gold Cup on Trip To Paris.
• The six races are limited to 10 runners with either two or three horses racing for each team (this will balance itself out
over the course of the afternoon), and points are awarded on a 15, 10, 7, 5, 3 basis to the first five horses home (nonrunners score 4 points). Subject to full fields, each jockey has five rides and the team with the highest total after the
sixth race lifts the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.
• The jockey amassing the most individual points will take home an additional £3,000 plus the Alistair Haggis “Silver
Saddle” trophy.
• All six races are handicaps and all will be run with identical prize money - £40,000 per race.
• There are two reserves per race.
• Owners have a fantastic opportunity on Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Day - there are no entry fees for the races,
there is prize money down to last place (with reserves that miss out on a run paid £500 appearance money) and there
is complimentary hospitality throughout the day.
• Dubai Duty Free has been associated with the Shergar Cup since its inception, initially as team sponsor of the Rest
of the World team and as a race sponsor. In 2006, the company became title sponsor for the first time and since 2014
has sponsored the entire event.
• The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is being run for the 15th time at Ascot. The Shergar Cup first took place at Ascot
in 2000 when it was staged as an owners’ competition. It became a jockeys’ competition in 2001 and has gone from
strength to strength ever since, attracting bumper crowds year after year. It did not take place in 2005 when the
racecourse was being redeveloped.
• The jockeys competing in the four-team Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will again wear full team colours at this year’s
renewal. Please see the jockeys’ biographies section (pages 9 -14) for further information about this year’s team colours.
• Cheerleaders will welcome the winning rider back after each race and be part of the opening and closing ceremonies.
• Each team will have an anthem for the day, played whenever they have a winner - GB&I: The Boys Are Back in Town;
ROW: Rockin All Over The World; GIRLS: Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves; EUR: Ca Plane Pour Moi.
• The first two races on Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup day will be broadcast on More4 with the remaining four contests
shown on Channel 4, making it the only raceday outside of Royal Ascot to be covered in its entirety by the broadcaster.

Lee Ryan, Antony Costa, Duncan James and Simon Webbe catapulted to fame in 2001 with their top five single ‘All
Rise’. The affable quartet quickly ascended to the top of the charts selling more than 15 million albums worldwide,
including three number one albums, highly-respectable collaborations with Elton John and Stevie Wonder, and
represented the UK in 2011 at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Lulu - 5.00pm-5.45pm
Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in 1948, Lulu is a successful Scottish singer, actress and television
personality. She is internationally identified with the song ‘To Sir with Love’ from the 1967 film of the same name and
with the title song to the James Bond film, ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’. She is also widely known for her Eurovision
Song Contest winning entry "Boom Bang-a-Bang" and for her first hit ‘Shout’, which was performed at the closing
ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Rick Astley - 6.05pm-7.00pm
Following the release of his debut single ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ in 1987, the 21-year-old became a pop sensation
overnight. Within two weeks of its release, the single reached number one in the UK, and went on to hit number one in
16 other countries worldwide. The following two years saw Rick continue to dominate the charts around the globe.
Razorlight - 7.15pm-8.15pm
After forming in London in 2002, Razorlight quickly became one of the key guitar bands of the following decade, selling
four million albums, playing sold out arena tours and headlining festivals. Their debut album, ‘Up All Night’, was released
in the UK in 2004, reaching number three in the UK Album Chart. But it was their second album, 'Razorlight', featuring
‘In the Morning’ and ‘America’ that debuted at number one in the UK. In 2007, Razorlight were nominated for two BRIT
Awards – Best British Band and Best Song – and two NME Awards – Best Band and Best Album.
Hayseed Dixie - 8.30pm-9.00pm
Hayseed Dixie have released 15 albums since 2001, consisting of both original material and reinterpretations of
previously rendered songs, selling a combined total of over 500,000 copies. They have performed over 1,000 live shows
in 31 different countries and are the acknowledged creators of the musical genre, Rockgrass.

THE PRIZES
The Shergar Cup
At stake for the winning team is the magnificent Shergar Cup, which depicts the mighty 1981 Derby
and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner. It was graciously provided by His Highness
The Aga Khan, who owned Shergar.
Points will be awarded to the first five horses to finish in each of the six Dubai Duty Free Shergar
Cup races as follows - winner: 15 points; second: 10 points; third: 7 points; fourth: 5 points; fifth: 3
points. If there is a non-runner which cannot be replaced by a reserve, 4 points will be awarded both
to the team and jockey missing out on the ride. The team with the most points after the six races
have been run will receive the Shergar Cup at the closing ceremony.
If a dead-heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and
shared between the two jockeys/teams.
If there is a tie for the Team or Silver Saddle competitions, there will be a countback on the number
of winners and the team/jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall; if they are
still level, then second places will be counted, then if necessary third places and then if necessary
fourth places. If they are still level, there will be joint winners.
The six races are worth a total of £240,000 in prize money, paid down to 10th (last) place in all six
races. With no entry fees to pay and £500 in number cloth sponsorship per contest for the Channel
4-televised races, these are the only races run during the year in Britain when every owner
represented by a runner should be guaranteed to, at the very least, cover their costs.

Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day
One jockey will receive the Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day Award.
Stable Staff Awards
Stable staff will once again benefit from special prizes worth over £5,000, more than on any other
raceday in Britain. There is a £200 prize for the groom in charge of the best turned out horse in
every race, while the winning lad or lass in each race will also receive £200. In addition, £100 will
be given to the lad or lass leading up the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th horses (i.e. the other points’ scorers)
in every race. Stable staff will enjoy free food and drink in the stable staff canteen.

RESERVES
There are two reserves for every race. A reserve can be brought in up to 45 minutes before each
race. Runners have to declare to run one hour before each race, at which point there is a 15-minute
window in which to bring in a reserve if there is a non-runner. Reserves that do not get a run will
receive a £500 travel allowance.
WINNING POST – THE OFFICIAL
BOOKMAKER
For the second year, Winning Post is the official bookmaker to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.
Winning Post was established 29 years ago by Roy Holbrook with its first shop in Filton on the north
side of Bristol. The firm has now expanded to a chain of 12 shops – nine in Bristol, one in Gloucester
and two in Wales.
Winning Post commenced the operation of the main betting shop at Ascot Racecourse shortly before
Royal Ascot in 2014.
Winning Post also operates betting shops at Bath and Chepstow Racecourses as well as at
Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP RULES
The competition is an international jockeys’ tournament with 12 riders taking part, three in each of
the four teams - The Girls (GIRLS) Great Britain & Ireland (GBI), Europe (EUR) and the Rest of the
World (ROW). All horses entered are eligible to represent one of the four teams, regardless of
ownership, and to be ridden by any of the jockeys participating in the competition.
The six races will be limited to 10 runners and two reserves.
Reserves must travel to Ascot on the day and can be substituted up until 45 minutes before their
race. Reserves who do not run will be paid £500.
Entries must be made by noon on Monday, August 3.
Declarations to run must be made at the 48-hour stage, by 10.00am on Thursday, August 6. The
top 10 in the weights (including penalties) at the 48-hour declaration stage will run, with those horses
11th and 12th in the weights acting as reserves.
DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP 'DRAW' PROCEDURE
The British Horseracing Authority has granted special permission to the Ascot Racecourse
Executive to stage a 'Draw' on Thursday, August 6, at which jockeys from the four competing teams
will be allocated to horses.
ALLOCATION OF HORSES TO TEAMS AND JOCKEYS TO
MOUNTS
1. In all races, the horses selected to run will be the top 10 in the handicap.
2. Once the final fields are known on Thursday, August 6, the 10 runners in each race will be ranked
from 1 to 10 by form experts/odds compilers from Winning Post, the Official Bookmaker to the Dubai
Duty Free Shergar Cup. A formula has been created to ensure that each of the four teams - Great
Britain & Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and The Girls - receives a balanced spread of higher
and lower ranked/priced horses and, further to that, that each of the three jockeys representing each
team also gets a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses for his/her five rides.
3. Once the ranking process has been completed, the four team names will go into a ballot. The
order in which they are randomly drawn will determine which set of horses is allocated to each team.
4. A second ballot will then take place. The three jockeys representing each team will be drawn at
random to determine an order (e.g. The Girls 1, The Girls 2 & The Girls 3) and will then be allocated
to their rides according to the set formula.
5. The allocation of rides by this method will be final. Any trainer declaring a horse to run at the 48hour declaration stage is deemed to have accepted these conditions.
6. All owners of participating horses agree that jockeys will wear the colours of the team which they
represent as part of an agreement with the Racehorse Owners Association.

Jamie Spencer (Ireland, Captain)
Born: June 8, 1980, County Tipperary, Ireland. Background: Son of George Spencer, who trained
Winning Fair to win the 1963 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham; went to school with Fozzy Stack, son
of trainer Tommy, and rode ponies at their yard as a child. Achieved first winner on Huncheon Chance
for trainer Ian Ferguson at Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, on May 11, 1996. Sprang to prominence by
winning the Irish 1000 Guineas, in 1998 on Stack-trained Tarascon at age of 17 when apprenticed to
Liam Browne, through whose hands jockeys Mick Kinane, Mark Dwyer, Tommy Carmody and Stephen
Craine had also passed. Spencer was brought over to Britain by the Stack family friend, Barney Curley,
to ride Magic Combination to win over hurdles at Kempton in January, 1999. He survived a stewards’
enquiry to take 2002 Grade One Weatherbys Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival on Edward
O’Grady-trained Pizarro, but had concentrated on the Flat and began a two-year contract with trainer
Luca Cumani, based in Newmarket, in 2002. Spencer was signed up by the Coolmore team to ride as
first-choice rider to replace Mick Kinane in 2004, becoming Ireland’s champion jockey that year, but handed in his notice
at Ballydoyle in early 2005 to go freelance. Retained jockey for Jim & Fitri Hay between 2010 and 2012 before signing
a two-year deal, which commenced on January 1, 2013, to ride for Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, whose horses run under the
Qatar Racing Limited banner. He shocked the racing world by announcing on August 21, 2014, that he would retire from
race riding at the end of the year but had a change of heart and now operates as a freelance. Was married to Channel
4 Racing presenter Emma Spencer (nee Ramsden), but they divorced in 2010. Accolades: Champion Apprentice
Ireland (1999), Champion Jockey Ireland (2004), Champion Jockey Britain (2005 & 2007 when dead-heated with Seb
Sanders). 20 Royal Ascot winners; has ridden over 2,000 winners worldwide British Classic wins: Ladbrokes St Leger

Born: Rhodes, County Offaly, Ireland, on May 22, 1977. Background: Father worked on a farm and
Pat became involved in horses at the age of 11 when accompanying his brother Sean to visit Joanna
Morgan's yard. Went on to show jumping and eventing. Served four-year apprenticeship with local
trainer Tommy Lacy, enjoying first success aboard Vicosa in an apprentices’ handicap at Dundalk on
June 11, 1993. It was Lacy’s suggestion that he rode for trainer Erwan Charpy in Dubai in the winter
of 1997 and he went on to become one of leading riders in the Middle-East. Spent two years with trainer
Tommy Stack, who gave him first Group win when Tarascon won 1997 Moyglare Stud Stakes. Became
stable jockey to Dermot Weld in 1999 following Mick Kinane's departure to Aidan O'Brien's stable.
Smullen is married to former trainer (and Aidan O'Brien's sister-in-law) Frances Crowley. Accolades:

Graham Lee (Ireland)
Born: December 16, 1975 in Galway, Ireland. Background: A jump jockey for 20 years with over 1,000
winners in that sphere, Graham Lee switched to the Flat in 2012 after a serious hip injury. His parents
live close to Galway Racecourse and he started out on the Irish pony-racing circuit and left school at
15 to join handler Noel Meade. Had five rides for Meade and then worked for County Meath-based Des
McDonogh, who provided the first winner in 1992. Ger Lyons obtained Lee a position with trainer Mary
Reveley in the North-East of England when he was 18. Began riding out for Bill Haigh, before joining
Malcolm Jefferson. He was stable jockey for Howard Johnson in County Durham between 2003 and
2006, but won the Grand National on Amberleigh House, trained by Ginger McCain, at Aintree in 2004.
Received nutrition and fitness advance from Chris Barnes, head of fitness at Middlesbrough Football
Club. He then was attached to Ferdy Murphy’s Yorkshire stables. Lee had a spell riding on the Flat in
1996 following his recovery from a broken leg but failed to win a race in 36 starts and, having lost a lot
of weight, went on a high protein diet for riding over jumps again. Ahead of the 2012 Flat turf season, Lee announced
that he would switch to riding on the Flat and has not looked back since. The North Yorkshire-based rider, who is married
to Becky with two children, partnered 108 winners in 2012, 127 in 2013 and 159 in 2014. He tasted Group One success
on the Flat for the first time when Trip To Paris won the 2015 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. First Winner In Ireland: Blushing
Pearl in a Navan handicap hurdle on November 7, 1992. First Winner in Britain: Firm Price, claiming hurdle at

Olivier Peslier (France , Captain)
Born: Cossé-le-Vivien, France, on January 12, 1973, the son of a stonemason. Background: Brought
up in Mayenne region of France, he started pony riding at a young age. Served his apprenticeship with
Patrick Biancone and Nicolas Clement. Rode his first winner on Cavalo d’Oro at Rouen on March 12,
1989. Sprang to prominence in 1996 when winning his first Cravache d'Or (France's jockeys' title) with
163 winners, ending the four-year reign of Thierry Jarnet. He took the title thrice more, in 1997 with 154
successes, 1999 (147 wins) and 2000 (162 wins). He soon became an international jockey of renown
and has ridden winners at the highest level all around the world. Most famous for his association with

Adrie de Vries (The Netherlands)
Born: July 27, 1969 Background: international rider who has enjoyed success all over the world in
both Thoroughbred and Arabian racing. Born in The Netherlands, he rode his first winner on Go at
Duindigt racecourse, near Rotterdam, in 1985. He enjoyed a successful partnership with top Dutch
trainer Jan Pubben during his time in Holland, partnering over 600 winners and dominating the jockeys’
championship. He won the Dutch Derby five times between 1991 and 1999. He moved to Germany
after the turn of the century and rode his first Group One winner aboard the Hans-Albert Blume-trained
Gyreka in the 2005 Italian Oaks. He was retained by Germany’s leading owner Gestut Schlenderhan
between 2009 and 2014. He also divides his time between Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE during the
winter months where he has done particularly well in Arabian racing. Accolades: champion jockey in
Holland 12 times. Champion jockey in Germany in 2014. Rode the Jens Hirschberger-trained Energizer
to victory in the Group Three Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot 2012, the first German-trained winner
at the meeting. Major Wins Include: Grosser Preis Von Baden (2009 Getaway), Preis Von Europa (2013 Meandre,

Vincent Cheminaud (France)
Born: November 18, 1993, Mont de Marsan, France. Background: son of successful jump jockey
Christophe Cheminaud. He was 13 when joining the racing school at Mont de Marsan and then
completed his apprenticeship with jump trainer Emmanuel Clayeux. Started working for leading handler
Arnaud Chaille-Chaille at 16 and had his first ride in March, 2010. Went freelance in 2013 after losing
claim and enjoyed first Grade One win on Guillaume Macaire-trained Storm Of Saintly in May of that
year. Teamed up with same horse to win the 2014 Grand Steeple Chase de Paris. Switched his main
attention to the Flat in 2015 with support from France’s champion Flat trainer Andre Fabre, who first put
him up in April – has ridden 32 winners on the Flat this year (up to August 3) Accolades: French

Emma-Jayne Wilson (Canada, Captain)
Born September 1, 1981, Brampton, Ontario, Canada Background: Emma-Jayne Wilson is the
winning-most female jockey of all-time in Canada (with 1,268 winners in North America as of August 2,
2015 - she has ridden in 9,252 North American races and her mounts have earned $62,018,562). She
is only one of two female Canadian jockeys to have ridden over 1,000 winners (after the legendary
Francine Villeneuve). Wilson burst onto the North American racing scene in 2005 when landing the
riding title at Woodbine, Canada. At its 167-day meet, Wilson partnered 175 winners from 1,096 mounts,
becoming the first female to take the title in the racecourse’s 50-year history, and only the third ever
apprentice to do so, following Sandy Hawley in 1969 and Mickey Walls in 1991. Started riding at the
age of nine and soon had her heart set on becoming a jockey. Studied equine management at the
University of Guelph and spent two years riding out at Woodbine Racecourse, where she caught the eye of leading
agent Mike Luider. Gained her first winner on only her second ride - a horse called Ali Olah at Fort Erie, on August 28,
2004, and enjoyed an annus mirabilis in her first full season as an apprentice, recording a first Stakes victory on board
Classic Stamp in the Grade Two Bell Canadian Stakes to go with her leading jockey title at Woodbine. Her achievements
on the racetrack were rewarded with a Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey (with 146 wins for the year)
and an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in North America - becoming only the second woman ever to
land the apprentice Eclipse award. Wilson retained her leading jockeys’ title at Woodbine in 2006 with 144 successes
and received a second Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. Became the first female rider to win the
Grade One Queen’s Plate, part of Canada’s Triple Crown, when scoring on board Mike Fox in June, 2007. Competed
in the Hong Kong International Jockey Challenge in December, 2007, and was granted a licence to ride in the former
colony the following winter. She was out of action for nearly three months following a fall at Woodbine in August 21,
2010, when she suffered a lacerated liver. Wilson made an impressive debut at the Breeders’ Cup in November, 2011,
partnering Excaper to finish second behind Wrote in the Grade One Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
Since 2005, she has finished in the top 100 jockeys by earnings each year in North America, 28th in 2005; 31st in 2006;
22nd in 2007; 30th in 2008; 36th in 2009; 61st in 2010; 18th in 2011 with earnings of US$7,157,347; 30th in 2012 ; 41st
in 2013 and 42nd in 2014. Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup: Wilson, who won the inaugural Pimlico Female Jockey
Challenge in June, 2011, is making her fourth appearance at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, having participated in
the competition in 2006, 2012 and 2014 when the Girls came within one point of winning the Dubai Duty Free Shergar
Cup and she just missed out on the Silver Saddle Award for leading rider.

Hayley Turner (England)
Born: January 3, 1983, Nottingham Background: Hayley Turner, the joint champion UK apprentice in
2005, is the most successful female jockey in British racing history. Turner was taught to ride by her
mother, a riding instructor. She started riding out for local trainer Mark Polglase, who supplied her first
winner, Generate, at Pontefract on June 4, 2000. She also attended the Northern Racing College, and
then was apprenticed to Michael Bell in Newmarket. She spent 13 years riding for Bell until a split was
announced in June, 2013. She has had no luck with injuries subsequently, breaking her left ankle in a
Yarmouth fall on July 25 last year. Shortly after making her comeback, she had another fall, this time
at Doncaster on September 12, chipped her pelvis and had three fractures in her back. She returned to
action in December, 2013. Accolades: Turner became the first woman to be crowned champion
apprentice when partnering 44 winners during the 2005 Flat (turf) season, sharing the title with Saleem Golam. She also
became only the fourth woman in Britain to ride out her apprentice claim, following Emma O’Gorman, Alex Greaves and
Lisa Jones. Her success during the 2005 season led to Turner being awarded a Lester for apprentice jockey of the year,
the first woman ever to gain that accolade. In 2008, she became the first female jockey to partner 100 winners in a
calendar year in Britain. Her total number of winners is approaching 700 and she has ridden in the Derby. Big-Race
Wins: Turner’s first Group One victory came in July, 2011, aboard the David Simcock-trained Dream Ahead in the
Darley July Cup at Newmarket and she enjoyed further Group One success when the Bell-trained Margot Did captured
the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes York the following month. She is only the second woman to have ridden a Group One
winner in Britain and the first to win one outright as Alex Greaves’ success came when her mount Ya Malak dead-heated
with Coastal Bluff for the 1997 Nunthorpe Stakes. In 2012, she enjoyed a Grade One victory on the international stage
when the Simcock-trained I’m A Dreamer landed the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington, USA. Dubai Duty Free Shergar
Cup: She has ridden at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on eight occasions (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011,
2012 and 2014) and captained the GBR team in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Sammy Jo Bell (Northern Ireland)
Born: December 28, 1990 in Northern Ireland. Background: Raised in Ballyclare, County Antrim. Her
mother, Jacqueline, rode in several point-to-points. She grew up around horses and spent six months
working for trainer Jim Bolger after leaving school. Subsequently moved on to the stables Kevin
Prendergast, where she worked for three and a half years. Enjoyed a first winner on just her third ride
as the Prendergast-trained Celtic Dane scored by a short-head in a Leopardstown handicap on March
27, 2011. Partnered 10 winners in Ireland before moving to the UK at the start of 2013 to ride for North
Yorkshire trainer Richard Fahey, in search of greater opportunities. Recorded a first success in Britain
on board Shot In The Sun in a maiden at Beverley on July 6, 2013. Has ridden 22 winners this year (up
to and including the racing of Monday, August 3) and is narrowly behind Cam Hardie, who leads the
race for this year’s champion apprentice title. Rides under the name on her birth certificate – Samantha Bell – but is
known universally as Sammy Jo Bell. Late substitute for the injured Cathy Gannon in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup
at Ascot on Saturday, August 8. She is currently eligible to claim 3lb. Accolades: Shortlisted for Sky Sports
sportswoman of the month for June, 2015, when she had 11 winners, alongside Olympic champions Nicola Adams and
Jade Jones; also made the shortlist for the Stobart Jockey of the Month Award in association with Channel 4 for the

Kerrin McEvoy (Australia, Captain)
Born: October 24, 1980 in South Australia. Background: grew up in Streaky Bay, a small fishing
community six hours west of Adelaide. Father Phillip was a jockey, as were his uncles Peter and Tony,
who is also a successful trainer. Started out as an apprentice to his grandfather Bill Holland in March,
1997. Moved to Adelaide in 1998 where he was apprenticed to Russell Cameron before switching to
Peter Hayes’ Lindsay Park stable. In 1999, he transferred to Hayes’ Flemington operation. The
following year, at of the age of 20 and in his first season as a senior rider, McEvoy became the second
youngest jockey to win the Melbourne Cup on the Michael Moroney-trained Brew. He did well in Victoria
and earned a stint in Dubai in 2003 which was extended to six week’s at Godolphin’s request after he
finished third in the 2002 Melbourne Cup on Beekeeper. He returned to Dubai in January, 2004 and
signed on as number two jockey (behind Frankie Dettori) for Godolphin in March. He rode 44 winners
in his first season in England, headed by an excellent front-running ride on Rule Of Law in the 2004 St Leger at
Doncaster. Rode in Britain for the next four seasons before returning to Australia permanently in 2008 to be the number
one rider for Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley operation. Went freelance in September, 2014. Married to former jockey Cathy
(Payne) and they have three young children. Accolades: 2003 Scobie Breasley Medal winner, which recognises
excellence in race riding at Melbourne tracks (won the 2002/03 Victorian Metropolitan Jockeys’ Premiership). Major

Blake Shinn (Australia)
Born: September 26, 1987 in Australia Background: grew up in Kilmore, Victoria and started
competing in gymkhanas at the age of five. Apprenticed to stepfather Lee Hope and began riding in
2003, with first major victory coming on Demerger in the 2005 Adelaide Cup. Left Victoria for Sydney
at 19 to become stable jockey for Gai Waterhouse. Won 2008 Melbourne Cup on the Bart Cummingstrained Viewed. Disqualified from riding for 15 months in December, 2010 for charges related to betting,
although ban was subsequently reduced to 12 months. Has yet to ride in the UK. Accolades: awarded
the 2005 Scobie Breasley Medal, which recognises excellence in race riding at Melbourne tracks; won
2007/08 Sydney jockeys’ premiership (79 winners). Major wins include: BTC Cup (2015 Hot Snitzel),
Coolmore Classic (2013 Appearance), Coolmore Flight Stakes (2014 First Seal), Doomben Cup (2014

Yutaka Take (Japan)
Born: March 15, 1969 in Kyoto, Japan. Background: He has been the subject of national adulation in
Japan, where he featured as one of the country’s top sporting figures. Yutaka Take is the son of
legendary jockey turned trainer Kunihiko Take, who was known as the ‘Magician of the Turf’. He rode
his first winner on Dyna Bishop at Hanshin on March 7, 1987, and won 69 races when champion
apprentice that year, a record for a first-season rider. Achievements: Take has been champion
Japanese jockey 18 times (1989-1990, 1992-2000 and 2002-2008 inclusive) and his 2005 title saw him
win a record 212 races. In 1991 he became the first Japanese rider to win a Pattern race overseas
when taking the Grade Three Seneca Stakes on El Senor at Saratoga, USA, and was also the first
Japanese jockey to win a Pattern race in Europe when landing the 1994 Prix du Moulin on Ski Paradise
at Longchamp, France, as well as the first to score in Britain, when winning the 2000 Darley July Cup at Newmarket on
Agnes World. Take is an internationally renowned jockey who has travelled extensively and was based in California in
2000 as well as riding in France during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, before returning to his domestic base. He partnered
the great Deep Impact in all of his races, including the 2005 Japanese Triple Crown. On July 22, 2007, Take established
a record in Japan when recording his 2,944th success at a Japan Racing Association (JRA) track, passing the record
of 2,943 achieved by Yukio Okabe. On November 3, 2007, Take reached another milestone in his career when becoming
the first JRA rider to record 3,000 victories. That win, on two-year-old Sky Beauty at Kyoto racecourse, was his 14,288th
JRA ride and came 20 years and eight months after the jockey made his career debut. The 5f 7in jockey’s numerous
notable victories include three in the Japan Cup thanks to Special Week (1999), Deep Impact (2006) and Rose Kingdom
(2010) and he has won the Japanese Derby a record five times. He gained his 3,500th JRA victory at Kyoto in January,
2013 and achieved his 100th Group One victory on Tosen Ra in the Mile Championship at Kyoto in November, 2013.
Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup – he has participated at the 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012 Dubai Duty Free
Shergar Cups. He won his first race at Ascot in the 2007 competition, steering the Tony Martin-trained Leg Spinner to
success in the Shergar Cup Stayers Handicap.

THE ALISTAIR HAGGIS SILVER SADDLE

If I came down from the commentary gantry at the end of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and
wanted to speak to Alistair (above left with Ascot’s Nick Smith), I knew exactly where to look - he’d be
watching the Closing Ceremony in the quietest corner he could find, well away from the spotlight. That was
Alistair. A man who would, and often did work morning, noon and night to make sure a project was successful,
and then be positively the last person to step forward and accept the acclaim that was rightly due.
Alistair loved racing, loved racing people and loved Ascot Racecourse. He had some of the finest PR
skills I have ever come across in anyone I have dealt with in any sport, and his tireless work, latterly with
colleagues at the International Racing Bureau, with trainers and jockeys is quite simply a cornerstone of why
the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has become what it is today.
It became tradition for there to be a production meeting in the days ahead of the Dubai Duty Free
Shergar Cup, in “Studio 6” we used to call it (though in reality a local restaurant), where we would talk through
plans for the day. The rest of us would then head home but for Alistair it was straight back to work. I still have
some of the 3am emails he sent with answers to any issues.
When the QIPCO British Champion Series started, it came as no surprise to hear Alistair was on the
team as PR Manager. Rod Street, the CEO of that organisation, knew his work was peerless and that he
held the respect of the media. Quite simply, the hand of Haggis was always the seal of success.
Devoted to his beloved Arsenal, Ali thrilled us all when marriage to Nim led to the arrival of their son
Alfie, on whom he doted. That such happiness should have been followed after such a short time by the
cruelty of his illness, Motor Neurone Disease, and inevitable passing last year has been hard for his friends
and family to bear.
Being able to say you were a friend of Alistair Haggis will always be something to cherish, and I’ll
admit before my day’s work in the commentary box is done on Saturday afternoon, my eyes will go skywards.
It is an appropriate gesture by Ascot and Dubai Duty Free to have the Silver Saddle today named in
Alistair’s honour, and it is wonderful we can welcome his family to the place he called ‘home’ for so many
happy years. Jill (his sister) and Nim will present the trophy. But how we all wish it wasn’t like this.

REMEMBERING SHERGAR
Shergar’s name is etched in racing folklore as much for his headline-grabbing demise as for his
exceptional performances on the racecourse, the most scintillating of those being his record-breaking
victory in the 1981 Derby.
Famously kidnapped by the IRA following his retirement to stud in Ireland, the Aga Khan’s colt was one
of the finest Derby winners of the 20th century and without argument the best racehorse of his
generation with a lofty Timeform rating of 140.
Trained by Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year-old
before finishing second to the more experienced Beldale Flutter on his only other outing in what is now
the Racing Post Trophy.
Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 European Free Handicap, Shergar commenced
his Classic season as a 33/1 ante-post chance for the Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length
victory in Sandown’s Classic Trial was followed by a 12-length demolition in the Chester Vase.
Shergar lined up as the 10/11 favourite for Derby glory at Epsom Downs. He did not disappoint his
supporters as he once again accelerated away from rivals to register a stunning 10-length success the widest winning margin in the long history of the premier Classic.
With the Epsom Classic in the bag, Shergar went to the Curragh and added the Irish Derby by four
lengths before routing his elders by the same distance in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance
contest, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an
unexpected twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. The extended mile and
three quarters of the world’s oldest Classic proved beyond Shergar’s stamina reserves and he could
finish no better than fourth.
That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. Valued at £10 million, the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s
Ballymany Stud in Ireland but on February 8, 1983, hooded gunmen seized the stallion. A £2-million
ransom was demanded and refused. Shergar’s fate remains a mystery.

A GLOBAL LEADER IN AIRPORT RETAILING
Dubai Duty Free opened for business in December, 1983 and over the past three decades has grown
to become one of the largest airport retailers in the world, with sales of $1.917 billion in 2014, an
increase of 7.36 per cent on the previous year.
Its founding principle of providing travellers with a first-class retail experience in a shopper-friendly
environment and a diverse range of high quality, limited edition products holds just as true today.
In 2014 Dubai Duty Free, which employs 6,000 people, recorded almost 27 million sales’ transactions,
an average of 73,960 per day, across Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International in Dubai
World Central.
Perfume is still the best-selling category, with sales of $314 million contributing 17 per cent of the
operation's total sales. Liquor sales amount to $286 million, followed by gold at £163.6 million,
cigarettes and tobacco $160 million and confectionery $147.7 million.
“This is a dynamic part of the world in terms of airport retail and the continued investment in airport
infrastructure reflects that,” says Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Duty Free's Executive Vice Chairman.
“Our expansion plans continue in line with the development at Dubai International where the retail
operation will reach 33,000 square metres with the opening of Concourse D this year. Meanwhile, our
operation at Al Maktoum International of 2,500 square metres will grow in line with the massive
development plans of Dubai World Central.”
In addition to the retail division, Dubai Duty Free operates a Leisure Division which includes the Irish
Village, the Century Village, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium - home to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis
Championships and venue for the Dubai Duty Free Darts Masters - and the five star 292-room Jumeirah
Creekside Hotel.
Last year Dubai Duty Free added 37 awards to its already impressive collection of local, regional and
international accolades, including the travel retail industry's top prize - the prestigious Frontier Award
for Airport Retailer of the Year in a single location.
Horses and horse racing are intrinsically linked to Arabian heritage, and Dubai Duty Free continues to
promote the sport both at home and abroad with high-profile events at Ascot, where it is Official
Sponsor, the Curragh and Newbury.
Dubai Duty Free's international sporting story continued with the organisation's inaugural sponsorship
of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, hosted by the Rory Foundation, at the Royal County Down Golf
Club in May, this year.
