Robert M. Tomlinson of Broadalbin has known working with wood
was his passion since he was a child.
“It started when I was about eight
years old,” Tomlinson, 77, said Aug.
4. “I would make wood cutouts from
drawings like Porky Pig and make
them into lawn ornaments.”
Tomlinson said he always found
drawing easy, and likes to decorate
whatever wood piece he is working
on with a wood burner. He said he
does “a little of everything” in the
way of woodwork – from furniture
to clocks to coat racks and even
grandfather clocks.
Tomlinson said he graduated from
lawn ornaments to knick-knack
shelves and kept trying new things.
“I’d see what someone else did
and then try it myself,” he said.
Drawing, painting and wood burning the wooden pieces he makes set
much of his work apart from other
woodwork in the area. He said he
has even done portraits in wood.
A Korean War veteran, Tomlinson
said he has made more than 1,000
wooden flag holders for families of
deceased veterans.
He said when he returned from the
Korean War, he used the G.I. Bill
education scholarship to go to barber
school. He is “mostly retired” now,
but still cuts hair for a few old
friends and longtime customers.
“When I had my woodwork at the
Eagle Mills Craft Fair, my [barber]
customers would stop by to say hi,”
he said. “They knew about my

crop of woodwork customers.”
He said although he didn’t sell
much at the craft show, he did get a
lot of orders from those who first
learned of his work by seeing it at
the show.
Weekly, Tomlinson gets together
with his old fiend Tom Loucks of
Providence and they share ideas and

The sharing of woodworking
ideas and general cooperation in
what could be a very competitive
hobby is typical, according to Mike
Kratky, 60, of Northville. He said
he is a member of several woodworking organizations, including
the Sacandaga Chapter of the
Northeast Woodworkers Association, where he has been a past president. They meet monthly at the
Mayfield High School on the second Wednesday of the month except July and August.
In July, an Early American sofa
table he made was raffled by the
Northville Rotary Club to support
its charitable work. Kratky said this
was a good example of the community help and interest as well as support the woodworkers’ associations
were part of in contributing to the
local community.
Kratky said he was part of the administration of several woodworking groups and helped found the
Sacandaga Chapter of the NWA.
“We have no secrets,” he said.
“We share everything. I guess it’s
like an addiction. There’s camaraderie, fun and great gratification.”
Kratky said he will be at both the
Washington County Fair and the
New York State Fair showing wood
projects and letting people know
about woodworking associations.
“We do a lot with the public,” he
said.
Samples of his work can be seen
at the Fulton County Chamber of
Commerce & Industry, but he isn’t
worried about getting the word out
about his own woodwork pieces.
“I sell them as fast as I can make
them,” he said.
Current president of the Sacandaga Chapter of the NWA, Ray
Laubenstein, of Mayfield, is a bit
newer to woodwork than either
Tomlinson or Kratky. He said he really got interested in woodwork in
the past five years, since moving to
the area permanently in 1991.
“I’m kind of new at it,” he said. “I

Laubenstein said he owns a 12.5acre property where he cuts green
lumber and air-dry cures the wood
for other local woodworkers to use.
He has learned proper air-drying
through trial and error.
“It has to be outside with tin over
it to dry properly,” he said. “It can’t
be inside, or it will get moldy.”
He said he supplies native pine,
oak, butternut and cherry to local
woodworkers as well as for himself.
He said he likes doing woodwork
projects and likes supplying the
wood for others.
“I enjoy making lumber,”
Laubenstein said. “I have a pile out
back now air drying.”
He said preparing the wood for
carving is as much an art as making
the decorative wood pieces.

Laubenstein at 863-6071 or go to

Put your back pain
behindyo u.
Suffering with back pain is no way to face the day.
Not only does it slow you down, it can affect your
mood, your health, and even your relationships.
Back pain is your body’s warning of strain or injury
to the spine. A chiropractic examination will identify
the root cause, and through chiropractic treatment,
unnecessary pain, even surgery, can be avoided.
New treatment options include the F.D.A. cleared therapies:
• Spinal Decompression relieves pain associated with herniated, bulging or degenerative discs
• Cold Laser reduces or eliminates pain and speeds healing at a cellular level.
Give us a call at 773-2000 for information on the introductory trial offered until July 1st.
Let us help you make this the summer you put your back pain behind you.
