Newsletter Fall 2008 - Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago
Newsletter Fall 2008 www.irishfellowshipchicago.com Great Moments in IFC Histor y The year was 1910, and the United States was beginning to emerge as world leader. Over in Belfast, construction had begun on the largest and most luxurious ocean-liner the world had ever seen: the Titanic. And here in Chicago, on an unusually warm March day, President William Howard Taft spoke as the guest of honor at the 9th Annual IFC St. Patrick’s Day Dinner. To accommodate the President’s notorious gir th (historians estimate he weighed more than 300 pounds), the IFC had a special, throne-like chair constructed. According to repor ts, the chair held up admirably throughout the dinner.
