The history of a very special family owned company: Gassan Diamonds
Gassan Diamonds is founded in October of 1946 by Mr. Samuel Gassan, and is located
the uilenburgerstraat in Amsterdam. The company’s activities included: diamond polishing, importing and exporting of rough and polished diamonds, and diamond jewelry,
both on a wholesale and retail level.
Gassan realizes the vital importance to the tourist aspect to the diamond industry. For
this reason the company introduced the Gassan Group. All the subsidiary companies of
Gassan are joined in this group. International attention for Amsterdam, City of Diamonds,
will attract more people to our factory and shops. The subsidiary companies of the Gassan Group are: Gassan Diamonds, Gassan Dam Square, Gassan Plaza and Gassan
Schiphol.
The company still concentrates primarily on diamond cutting, wholesaling and retailing
in set diamonds, loose polished diamonds, gold jewelry and watches. Gassan Diamonds
has a unique position within the diamond industry by introducing a new cut, the Gassan
121. Every year more than 400.000 tourists visit the historical diamond factory. During a
free guided tour multilingual staff explains the various stages of diamond polishing. They

Business purpose of the trade mission:
Networking, gaining experiences through networking. To get a better understanding of
the opportunities in the US.
A "standard" tour consist of a complimentary tour in a wide variety of languages, including Chinese and Japanese. A clear explanation by well trained staff as to where diamonds are found, how they are classified and polished is given to every individual group.
China has been an important market for Gassan for the travel industry: the company
works with most large tour operators offering tours at the Gassan diamond factory in
Amsterdam. For this purpose, and to provide after-sales service to foreign customers,
Gassan works with local representations in various countries, including in China. Therefore, contacts in the tour operator industry are vary valuable to us.
Gassan has recently started looking at opportunities to expand on the Chinese market
with sales of their diamonds and jewelry via retail and high-end department stores. The
company was in contact with Chow Tai Fook last year in Shanghai but this hasn’t led to
any collaboration yet. A company like Chow Tai Fook would open doors for us.

Jan van Bodegom is surgeon and founder of the Alexander Monro Hospital. This is
the first breast cancer specialist hospital in the Netherlands. Nearly 75 people are
employed and the hospital has over 1300 patients since the opening. Initiator of this
hospital is surgeon Jan van Bodegom. He worked for six years to get this hospital from
the ground.
Business interests:
Visiting renowned cancer centers in New York and meeting surgeons and owners. A
meeting with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is high on Jan’s wishlist.
A few numbers:
- Since opening the hospital has grown from 40 to 75 staff
- Since opening 1300 patients seen (now about 35-40 new patients per week, of which
about 10 new diagnoses of breast cancer). Numbers are still rising. We performed 295
operations.
- We analyzed more than 100 patients who were diagnosed elsewhere and came to
us for treatment: At 5% we applied to the diagnosis and in another 20 we have more
treatment plan tailored to the patients.
- Our waiting times: Access> 95% same day and> 90% same day or next morning
diagnosis
- Waiting for research Mammography (breast pictures), breast MRI: no (direct to visit).
Results 100% within 3 minutes (waiting MRI elsewhere quickly weeks).
- Complications: infection and subsequent bleeding etc: below national average (<4%)
- Almost all operations were performed by a surgeon with a plastic surgeon (breastsaving oncoplastisch). This means that a surgeon and a plastic surgeon together make
a size plan for all patients in order to carry out in tissue removal (in whole or in part), a
direct operation to minimize cosmetic influence or improve even.
- Breast Reconstructions with mastectomy: 80% immediately upon first operation! (This
is in the Netherlands 20% and then also a 2nd operation after about a year).
- Chemotherapy: more than 75 patients.
- The assessment of patients in care card: 9.8 average at now 74 reviews

Judith was born in 1968 in the Netherlands, is known for her beautiful sculptures in
bronze and aluminium, mostly expressed in female forms and postures. She uses
stone or wood to start her creative process. ‘This ’ as she explains, ‘helps me to give
the emotion strength, because it resembles the resistance I encounter in real life’. After
it is translated in bronze or aluminium it will have the strong and almost abstract radiance she wants to accomplish. Judith had exhibitions with her work in the Netherlands,
Europe, South Korea, China and the United States.

Galleries with contemporary art, such as; L&M Arts Gallery and Luhring Augustine Gallery.
Meeting the right gallery for my products in the United States and leads to invite.

ideal starting point in thinking of forms and postures. Inspired by all things she encounters in life. Women as a starting point. You can call it “self-portraits’ because she works
alone with all here experiences in her atelier. The finishing of her work is mostly in
bronze or aluminium. To put woman’s features in aluminium was at the time very new
and could be considered as here founding’s.
