Every military base has little subsets of interest groups, and each month those communities turn over as
service members move on to their next stations. From Rugby to Magic the Gathering, service members
find ways to enjoy their time on base. Goodfellow AFB is no different in most respects. We’ve got sports
teams and fantasy card games galore. Goodfellow is also home to a group of auto enthusiasts who are
striving to make a difference for generations of service members yet arrive.
Since the dawn of the automobile, the desire
to wrench and improve them has
driven design and performance
to new heights. The service
members who’ve passed
through GAFB have
embodied this passion
and continually
improved upon the
facilities available to
those who choose
to wrench on their
own rides. Dating
back decades, the
auto hobby shop (AHS) has grown up from unofficial barns where the recycling center
now stands, to the current 12-bay concrete behemoth where it shares a roof with the
Arts & Crafts center.
Over the years, many people have helped bring about change and improvements to the
AHS, especially in its current location. In 2007 the AHS closed for renovations for 2
years, growing from 6 bays to its current 12-bay configuration, emerging as “the premier
AHS in the (entire) USAF!” With every conceivable hand, power and air tool available
the Goodfellow AHS raised the bar exponentially!
On any given Sunday you’ll find a myriad of service members, civilians and their families
getting greasy, everyone from the young to the old, the guys and the gals take advantage
of the AHS. There are dilapidated rust heaps being kept alive with duct tape, bubble
gum, and their owner’s hopes and dreams, restored Ford Falcons, and modern sports
cars bought with signing bonuses. Headlights are replaced, fluids are changed. Some fix
loud exhaust leaks, others install loud aftermarket mufflers. No matter what the task,
Goodfellow’s automotive community brings the tools and camaraderie
together to get the job done.

Why
Run?
&
Sprints are not the biggest factor to get
you faster. All the workouts are meant
for performance improvements to
include faster times. In my opinion,
the key lies in the consistency of your
workouts. Let’s take a look at sprints.
For a 1.5-mile preparation, your sprints
should include 100-meter and 40-yard
sprints.
How To Meet
Your Goals
By ALFREDO PIZANA
Fitness Trainer, Carswell Field House
Running should be fun. However, some may not agree with this
statement. Especially if they feel they have to run every day!
So, why should you run? For military members the answer is
obvious. Military members are required to have a level of fitness in
order to meet or exceed physical standards. But, what happens when
you are no longer in the military and find yourself in a civilian job that
does not require any fitness or appearance standards?
Regardless of your reason for running, your focus
should be on the distance and time goals. For
example: if you are trying to improve your 1.5mile run time, workouts should consist of the
following:
3 Runs per week (at least 2 outdoor
runs)
• One 2-mile run at slow pace for
endurance
• One set of sprints (see below)
• One 2.5- to 3-mile run at slow pace for
endurance
2 to 3 30-minute conditioning/
strengthening workouts
• Keeping muscles healthy helps prevent
injuries
• Improve endurance
40-yard Sprints on Football Field:
• Warm-up by jogging 2 laps
• Sprint for 40 yards and sprint back (up
and back sprints)
• Options between sprints:
*Perform an exercise for 30 seconds
(squats, push-ups, etc.)
*Rest/walk for 30 seconds
• Repeat sprint up to 8 times
• Perform sprints workout 2 (16 sprints) or
3 (21 sprints)
100-meter Sprints on Running Track:
• Warm-up by jogging 2 laps
• Sprint on one side only (do not sprint both
straight-a-ways)
• After the sprint, walk the next 100 meters (first
curve) for recovery
• Jog the next 200 meters
• Start sprinting at same point
• Repeat 4 to 6 times (Max at 8 sprints)
• Keep track of each sprint time; stay consistent
with each sprint
• If you are not “winded” at the end, you can
probably sprint faster
Your endurance runs are also important:
2, 2.5, and 3-mile Runs
• Start slow and finish slow
• Primary purpose is to improve breathing, running stride, conditioning
• Recommend running outdoors; most fitness tests and races are per
performed outdoors
Strengthening/Conditioning Workouts help maintain overall strength:
• 2 or 3 30-minute workouts
• Alternate upper and lower body muscle groups, but may include core on all workouts
• For detailed workouts and advice, stop by Carswell Field House; we’ll set you up for success!
A couple of things that can make runs enjoyable are location an
and other runners. The KOA
campground and the Concho River (Kids Kingdom Park) are runner friendly and include nice
scenery. Running with friends or family can also contribute to some fun runs.
If running distance and goals require a more serious approach (half marathon, marathon,
etc.), stop by my office. We can discuss training options and still find a way to enjoy running.
Remember, you don’t have to run every day. Run to meet your goals and have some fun at the
same time.
