The weather was perfect, high 50s, clear blue skies and a 5 p.m. start made Field 2 at NAS Whidbey Island an ideal place for football. The difference in the teams was apparent from the start. CNATTU had at least twice as many players and are coming off winning the Captain’s Cup for the best football team on NAS Whidbey Island last year. VAQ-133 just made the seven-man limit, for the first half but only had six in the second as one man had to go to work and they were preparing for a detachment so some men were not able to play. But still they played and receiver Dustin Stacy made both touchdowns for the Wizards on passes in the first quarter. Brandon Dressel also made and interception for VAQ-133 that kept CNATTU out of the end zone. But CNATTU scored three times in the first half plus a 2-point safety. Their quarterback, George Salatka, was poised and his passes were on rope to his receivers. CNATTU receiver David Yopp had two interceptions and receiver Travis Krueger had an interception and two touchdowns. Another touchdown was thrown to Adam Monfre. “We had quite a few players that came back to play this year and we’ve got pretty good chemistry,” said Salatka about CNATTU. The second half saw VAQ-133 begin to slow down as they played both offense and defense. “We were tired in the second half because we didn’t get any breaks,” said VAQ-133 lineman Terry Campbell. CNATTU scored a couple of touchdowns in the second half, one on a run by Salatka then co-captain and quarterback Robert Wright threw a touchdown to Eric Kellogg to make it 36-12 and take their win record to 7-0.
