We caught up with drummer Nicole Pyeritz and asked her about the band's first effort. So it's going to be available for download next month? Tyler Kairy It's photo dueby:out digitally mid September and called The Greytone Songs. It was originally a 4 track EP, but we've bumped it up to 5 and the newest edition is actually going to be our first single release. I understand there's a ghost story of some sort attached to the first single? Yes. It's called '13 Bends' and was written about a local area that is said to I had the drum beat for this song for over a year and we were about to give up on it, and then it just clicked. Now it's one of our most favorite songs. Not to mention I never told Jess I had intended for the lyrics originally about ghosts and she comes in to practice one day and tells me, I have lyrics that would fit perfectly with that waltz beat you have. Wow! So you had already thought of it that way, and then Jess just comes up with the same thing. That's some really musical connecting! And a wee bit s c a r y . . . (Laughs) We thought that was kind of eerie, but maybe the inspiration just came from the duck. Duck? (Laughs) We have this duck/goose wallpaper that's lining all of the rooms in a building we practice in. PIANO I've always believed playing a club like Charlie Murdochs is a challenge in terms of the variety of material you must know? MAN Pittsburgh's Original Piano Man Ron Soltis Ron Soltis has been part of the Pittsburgh music scene for a long time, going back to its original rock n roll hey day in the 1980s. He is also the first sing along piano man to grace the stage at Jellyrolls, Pittsburgh's first sing along Piano Bar, which was located in Station Square in the early 1990s. Along the way, he's worked with many outstanding Pittsburgh musicians. He passed the Jellyrolls torch to another extraordinary piano man, Joey Granati, and today is in the house band at Charlie Murdochs with Joey's brother, guitarist David Granati. Having always believed this was one of the toughest ways to play a gig there is- Can you imagine having to be able to play ANY song that's thrown out at you?-- I wanted to find out more about this talented man and good friend. running. Having a live -in sparring partner made the difference. It's important for beginners to persist but especially if they enjoy the little victories. The 'self taught' person never stops learning because there's always something on the horizon, but, it must somehow be fun. The Beatles Let It Be and Hey Jude were songs that I needed to learn how to recreate so they were my starting point. Elton John and Billy Joel were hitting when I was a young teen so my timing was on for the piano classics they wrote in the '70's. I noticed Lennon and How long have you been playing McCartney and Townshend would switch between the piano and guitar so I music? emulated my heroes and learned the guitar on my own. Acoustic first. 8 hours Ron Soltis I took piano lessons for about 3 years a day is fun when you're taking many It from age 9, but I wanted to play stuff I baby steps towards your goal. shouldn't be homework- it should be heard on the radio. discovery. Are you a schooled musician or selfDo you play any other instruments? taught? Ron Soltis My older brother Tony was learning the acoustic guitar and had chords- only books. I figured out how to translate the chords for piano and I was off and Ron Soltis I play piano, guitar, bass and harmonica. Singing too. The voice is my favorite instrument. Ron Soltis We're always in search of the audience's collective G spot. Everyone has at least one genre that gets 'em.There's classic rock and current hits. Any song knowledge is good. The more the merrier. It's all about the connection you make with the crowd. You must keep them engaged and participating. You get them clapping and singing or laughing and it works. Once you lose the crowd's attention it's hard to get it back. So we aims to keep it. What's the most challenging part of a gig like that? Ron Soltis We say we'll play any song you want, and that can be rough, but it can also be the most thrilling and exciting moments on stage. That's where the teamwork comes in. Between 6 guys, one of us knows it. It's risky, but fun, and each night is different. It's really a great gig. You get to work with some seriously talented musicians. I bet that keeps you on your toes..? Ron Soltis Yes everyone has to give their A game and they do.When you have the talents of David Granati on the guitar, you can go anywhere, so we do. A drummer like Ben Tryc is amazing. He lays down the groove better than anyone and then gets up and raps his ass off! John Hasinger is simply incredible. He's our fearless band leader and we are lucky to have him. Sean Roberts and Matt Tichon are world class musicians. Life is good. Any war stories you'd like to share? Ron Soltis We had the Pens Halloween 2011 party one Sunday and they were really fun. Seth Rogan and Craig Robinson rented our balcony for the Zac and Mira rap party, and Craig jammed on Stevie Wonder. Then there are the local stars like Bob Bannergee or Jason Kendall who stop in and blow the roof off. BUSTED? Patrick K. Nightengale Patrick K. CARSON ST. • 412-431-7464 SHOW REVIEW SHOW REVIEW Learn to Play Guitar MHS Showcase at the Mousetrap or advance your playing skills! Our showcase series, which spotlights some of the up-and-coming bands in the Pittsburgh area hit the Mousetrap on Saturday the 27th. It was a fun night of music, food and booze. Warming up the crowd was Mousetrap staple Tony Scarfone of Zero Fame with an acoustic solo set. Tony’s musical growth over the years has been truly impressive, and he delivered on this night with an eclectic mix of material, including his aforementioned take on Adele’s “Someone Like You” (see “Cover This!” from the July issue of MHS.) The crowd ate this one up and it was a perfect set up for the next band, Sun Hound. This female duo has charm and charisma, and singer Jess Joseph really belts it out! The ladies did a very nice set of originals and the kind of soft rock covers they are becoming known for. Drummer Nicole Pyeritz lays down a solid groove and more than holds her own on an instrument generally dominated by the guys. At the same time, the touch of femininity they brought to the proceedings offered a good balance and contrast to the next act up, the always heavy as hell Klaymore. This band of youngsters takes the stage with the kind of confidence and showmanship one normally only expects from much more seasoned musicians, and this gig was no exception. Once again, the kids simply blew doors with a great set of their traditional heavy metal styling. Their original number “Queen of Nightmares” was a real crowd pleaser. These kids always take us back to when we were youngsters head banging to the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Last but not least, Gods and Aliens delivered a strong counterpunch to end the night. After Klaymore’s youthful metallic assault, you really can’t close with anything mellow and these guys did not disappoint, showcasing their experience in the trenches to good advantage. Particularly impressive was the fact that they’ve had some recent line-up changes and were no worse for the wear. In fact, they were if anything a little tighter with single guitarist. It’s always tough to lose a good player and finding a replacement isn’t easy, but guitarist Guy Panza brought his Agame to their creative brand of hard rock / metal. Well done gentlemen! All in all, a fun night of diverse sounds which built up steam as the evening rolled along. Showcases like this remind us of why we do this. No matter how jaded we as critics can become, there’s always a few acts that make you sit up and take notice. It was really a blast to have four of them take the stage in one night. – Jay Belfiore with Vinni Belfiore MUSIC MARKET I am now taking on new private students as well as enrolling for the CCBC group guitar course beginning February 9th. Great set from another local to watch for. Texas Hippie Coalition T! H! C! Need I say more? When it comes to bringing the party, the name says it all. Having known Big Dad Ritch and John Exall since 2009, I can definitely say, T.H.C always bring a high energy explosive show of what they call, ‘Red Dirt Metal’ Opening the show at Alter Bar with “Hands Up”, off their most recent CD, Peace Maker, was the perfect choice to set the tempo for the night. The crowd literally went nuts when the T.H.C outlaws took the stage. This tours sees a couple changes in the THC roster. Returning to the lineup is guitarist Wes Wallace from the Rollins tour. New additions to the band are Gunnar Molton, on drums, and Cord Pool, on guitar. Both bring solid skills, excitement and energy to the show. So put your hands up for the Highway Robbery tour! Happy Hour Saturdays Get a Tropical Southside Smoothie Pittsburgh's Homicide Black opened up with an incredible heavy sound, and the power one would expect from the city’s favorite Black Sabbath Tribute masters. Vocalist Sean Nestor really brings the explosive frontman thing while the band is tight and professional. Eve To Adam An awesome band in their own right, NYC's Eve To Adam stepped-it-up with a new single "Straitjacket Supermodel", hitting radio now. The track is an appetizer for their much-anticipated, upcoming full-length album, "Locked & Loaded" and is just in time for their national summer tour supporting Texas Hippie Coalition.
