Lots of music news happening this month. Our music
scene is starting to show signs of new life! We’re
noticing quite a bit more music coverage in the
mainstream press and lots of grassroots efforts are
surfacing via social networks like Facebook.
105.9 The X has always been a very strong
supporter of the local scene and offers up a nightly
“Pick of the Litter” at 9pm featuring a local band, and
they give locals an hour every Sunday night. They
offer bands the opportunity to expand their reach

Pittsburgh scene made many
unwelcome changes take place,
including the end of Dead Fuzzy.
Scarfone, perhaps out of frustration,
needed time to think and regroup. He
had, as so many talented players do,
burnt out.
Scarfone has since come roaring back
with his new band, ZERO FAME. His
fellow bandmates, Kevin BelonziVocals, John Picard- Guitar, Justin
Walker- Drums, are all his junior, but you
won't notice that at their shows. You see,
they benefit from his experience, while
their youth supercharges Scarfone. The
result is a lot of fun for the audience and
a bar that sells a lot of beer.

They also play a wide enough variety of
popular rock to keep their audiences
engaged. Scarfone makes no apologies
when it comes to playing covers.
Tony Scarfone's sigh is almost audible as he hits the
send button on his last Facebook post, minutes before
heading out to this evenings gig at RPM's, in Bridgeville,
literally promoting the show right up to the last minute.
Even though he knows, the odds are really good there will
be a packed house, with a growing number of ZERO
FAME fans there, he still promotes the gig like the results
of this one show mean life or death for the band.
Like many musicians, Tony Scarfone has a demanding
life that has nothing to do with playing gigs to screaming
fans. A home, a beautiful daughter, an equally beautiful
wife (who is, by the way, a gem in the world of band wives)
and the obligatory job to survive, haven't deterred him
from making music. They only serve to fuel the fire inside
him.
The 'sigh' is the good kind of sigh. The one Clark Kent
would let out right before turning into Superman. Except
with Tony Scarfone, it's more like turning into a rock n roll
Terminator. But, the good one, like Arnold in T2.
He stalks the stage, and would almost be menacing, if he
wasn't obviously having so much fucking fun! His playing
is the kind of rock solid, full of feel playing one would
expect to find in a veteran of several of Pittsburgh's more
popular bands. He's also a great singer and can do the
frontman thing with ease.
"I don't know man, I make money
playing other peoples stuff" said
Scarfone when asked about covers
prejudice. "When we play a show, it's
usually packed full of people wanting to
hear stuff they can sing along with. I can
name maybe 3 bands in Pittsburgh that
have enough moxy to their (original)
music to make that happen. I guess it
depends on what you are trying to
Scarfone first gained attention in the early '90s with
Trauma, a western Pittsburgh suburbs cover band that
was known for bringing the party. Of more note, at a time
when most Pittsburgh bands were still trying to be the
next Bon Jovi or ACDC, Scarfone and Trauma were
covering bands like Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and
Soundgarden. The members were asked more than once
if they had written Soundgarden's "Outshined" by locals
weaned on a rock station that didn't know albums were
recorded after 1986, and consequently, hadn't found the
new sounds of the new decade.
Scarfone has brought his put on a good show
and entertain the audience philosophy to Zero
Fame, and the results are more fans and more
gigs.
After Trauma disbanded, Scarfone and Trauma
members Gabe Ceyrolles (vocals, guitar) and Paul
Kirstein (drums) formed the nucleus of Dead Fuzzy. The
band was instantly popular and even today, years after
they broke up, still gets airplay on 105.9 The X every now
and then. They were that good. But once again,
changing musical climates and the rapidly shrinking

his head, and is as hard on his own music as
anyone. He wants it to be good. He doesn't
want to spit out songs just to fill a set. "I've
never been one to cram my crappy music
down peoples throats" said Scarfone. "I say, if
it's good, play it. If it sucks, shelve it."

He sees covers as just another means of
reaching more fans, who will also hear the
band's original music in the course of the night.
And as the band has grown together, they've
started to write their own stuff and add it to the
mix. "We broke out our second original last
night" says Scarfone of the RPMs show. "It
went over well for no one knowing it" says
Scarfone with a touch of pride. "As long as it
continues to gain popularity, we'll keep it in the
set."
Suburbs vs. City.
It can be difficult for a band to reach a large
number of fans in Pittsburgh because of that
factor, but Scarfone is aware of it and sees a
blend of the two worlds as the only practical
solution to building a truly solid fan base. "This
town is funny-- places downtown won't book
you if you play covers, and the surrounding
areas won't book you if you play originals."
says Scarfone. "We currently have three
originals with more on the way of course...our
setlist consists of stuff like 3 Doors Down, Foo
Fighters, Johnny Cash. We also do some
harder edged stuff like Tool, and Godsmack."
