A friend of mine moved in May. She loves her new home and it is perfect for
her current lifestyle. Her change reminded me of what a huge task moving
turns into. It forces us to evaluate our "stuff". What do we hang on to and
what do we donate to a worthy cause? The decisions are never easy! Either
you spent money for the item or it holds sentimental value. What is a positive
side to moving? Everything is in a fresh spot and there are no cobwebs in the
corners. It gives you renewed interest in your home.
Maybe you want to make a quilt or table runner for
the new space. Maybe you just don't care for the
color of your sofa in its new environment and you
would like something new.
My thoughts turned to my quilting life. I face similar
difficulties with my stash. Where do I put all the fabric? How can I utilize a fabric from several years ago that no longer suits my
tastes or is difficult to match to the fabric lines out today? Oh, the decisions! I
think there is a positive side to this dilemma as well. A quilt could be made
and given to a child in need. The fabric could be used for a Country Store
item that would end up in someone else's home. It could be used in the Create-a-Block projects. It could be dropped on the "Free-Bee" table.
What is the Country Store? What is Create-a-Block? And what in the world is a
Free-Bee table? As new members and guests, you may hear terms that you
are unfamiliar with. If that happens, please ask someone what it is. Pop your
hand up and ask me or ask the person sitting next to you. Now, I will explain
the three terms: Country Store is a once a year fund raiser for the guild. We
make projects all year long to create inventory for the store. The store takes
place during our three day quilt show in April. It takes volume and cleaver ideas to make it work. Members work independently or as a group on the third
Tuesday of each month. The third Tuesday meeting is located at the Arts Center at 10:00 am. There are also third Thursday meeting that take place at the
same location at 6:00 pm (dates to be announced). Moving on to Create-a(continued on page 3)

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
(continued from front page)
Block: members and visitors make 12" blocks to
assemble into quilt tops that are donated to either children or vets. It is a fun and popular
booth at the quilt show and the antique fair.
Create-a-Block is an on-going project. Kits are
available if you are interested in putting a top
together. You may do the quilting or turn it in
as a top for someone else to finish. And lastly,
the Free-Bee table is located in the Arts Center
kitchen on the center island during our regular
meetings. You may bring gently used quilting
supplies, books, magazines or fabric to share
with others. One of our members has completed several darling tote bags using fabric finds
from the free-bee table!!! Try saying that fast!
Another member has almost completed her
scrappy quilt from the free-bee table. Check the
free-bee table out at every meeting because it
is constantly changing and you never know
what you will find!
I would like to welcome our returning members, new members and guests. All skill levels
are welcome and create the fabric our organization. A new member's tea has been scheduled for the third Tuesday in October. It is designed to assist new members in finding out
the terminology we use in guild and show you
where our library is located. Our guild has
grown dramatically in the last two years so get
cozy with your neighbor, introduce yourself and
enjoy becoming active in our group.

Happy Quilting

UVQG Helps Cancer
Survivors:
A volunteer from the Cancer Center saw the
UVQG raffle quilt on display at the Douglas
County Fair. As she admired the quilt and purchased her tickets, she asked if the guild would
like to donate a quilt to the Cancer Center. The
quilt would be hung in the Cancer Center's lobby for several weeks. Then it would travel to
Seven Feathers for several weeks of display. On
October 29th cancer survivors are acknowledged at a special luncheon. The winning ticket
will be drawn at that time.
When I spoke with the volunteer, I told her I
would bring her proposal up at our September
meeting. I thought that was really cutting the
time short. I decided I would contact Nancy
Jarvis to see if she had some pink fabric she
would like to donate to this worthy cause. She
said she had the fabric and I could come over
any time. I pulled my pink fabrics and went
right over to Nancy's studio. We began to play
with stacks of fabric, and Nancy asked what
pattern would be used. I told her I hadn't had
time to think about it, but I thought paper piecing would be the best. Then to my surprise,
Nancy pulled out a 72" X 94" pink, teal and lavender quilt. She said, "Would this work? You
can have it and it will be out of my sewing
space."
I love the generosity of quilters! Thanks for
making my day, Nancy! On October 29th you
will get to make someone else's day too! Nancy
wanted the quilt to be a donation from the
guild so I made a label that reads:
Stitch with love and prayers

DUES:
Annual Dues of $20 are
now payable. Please turn
in to the Membership
Chair, Jeanette Vincent.
These are due at the September meeting. If not
paid by the October meeting, you will be excluded
from the roster and the
newsletter.
ONGOING PROJECTS
Remember, if you just want a
small project to work on throughout the year, you can always sew
up a ditty bag or a Christmas
stocking. Then when next November/December comes around, we
will be prepared. It is never too
early to start. Also, once again, let
us see how many Charity Quilts
we can “flood” Karen with at the
September meeting.
WORKSHOPS:
If you have any questions about
workshops: the cost, which ones
are being offered, when they are,
what are the requirements, etc.
There are some great ones scheduled, so don’t miss this opportunity.

SEPTEMBER PROGRAM-EVENING AND DAY
There is no formal program for the September meeting as this is the
first meeting of the Guild year. There is generally a lot of business
items to deal with so no formal program is scheduled.
D.V.D. FOR 2012 QUILT SHOW
I have been contacted again by Jeff regarding our wishes for making
another D.V.D. of our 2012 show. Please consider it, and I will take a
survey at the September meeting to see if there enough interest in doing
it again. Last year was a “pilot program” for us and it is our decision
whether we do it again.
So, be prepared to let me know whether this is something that you are
interested in or not. Thanks,
Nancy Jarvis

HAPPENINGS OF THE GUILD
BUS TRIP
Saturday, September 24, 2011
to NW Quilt Expo and Fabric
Depoe
Cost is $30 members
$35 other guild members
$40 non members
Bus Trip:
UVQG members and nonmember guests have the opportunity to ride in a comfortable touring bus to the
Northwest Quilt Expo and
Fabric Depot in Portland.
We have done this field trip
several times and it always
proves to be a winner. The
bus has comfortable seating
and is complete with restroom and storage for purchases, jackets, etc. Riders
may bring food and beverages on the bus. There will
be no lunch stop so a sack
lunch would be appropriate.
Here are the details: there
will be two pick-up points,
Kmart parking lot in Roseburg at 6:45 am and leave
at 7 am sharp. There will
also be a stop in Sutherlin at
the old Ray's Market parking lot .We will not wait as
we are on a tight schedule,
so be prompt. We will arrive
at the show and have plenty
of time to view the quilts,
the dolls, the wearable arts,
and shop the vendor mall.
Be prepared for inspiration
overload!
We will depart the NW Quilting Expo at 1:15 pm to go to
Fabric Depot. We will receive
a discount coupon as we exit
the bus. A name tag will be
given to you so the checkers
know you are in our group.
This fabric store is like Costco
for quilters. They have tons
of fabric, tools, books, and
anything else you could
dream of. We will leave Fabric Depot at 3:45 pm and
drop the Sutherlin folks at
Rays Market about 7:00 pm.
The Roseburg group will arrive at Kmart about 7:10 pm.
Tickets for the Expo can be
purchased at the door or in
advance on line at:
www.nwquiltingexpo.com.
The tickets are $9.50 for a
one day admission.
Close -Ups,
One day
class - for Beginner to Intermediate quilters. Workshop
by Janet Fogg. Janet is an
award winning quilter who is
the Grand Prize Winner of the
JoAnn Fabric and
Craft stores "Quilt your Colors" quilt contest, 2010. The
workshop will be on October
5, 2011, 9am to 4pm, at the
Sleep Inn, 2855 NW Edebower.
Janet says sometimes images are more interesting or abstract when shown only partially or cropped. In this
workshop we will practice
cropping photo prints to
achieve the desired effect for a
small quilt design. By cropping,
tracing and projecting the selected image onto our design surface, we transform a photo into a
quilt pattern. Various methods of
image construction will be covered in class including curved
machine piecing and machine
topstitched applique. Quilt designs will not exceed 30 inches
on any side.
The cost for this workshop is $35
for members, $40 for members of
other guilds, $45 for non members. Class limit is 20 students.
PLANNING AHEAD
There are some really great workshops scheduled for this coming
year. My goal was to have a variety of classes, with something for
everyone. There is so much to
learn! I just love to learn more
ways to do quilting and hope you
do too.
Several of the members have already contacted me about Marsha
McCloskey's Radiant Feathered
Star class in March. It is not to early to sign up for that one.
Did you realize we have JANET

These photos are of the 2012 Raffle
Quilt. The picture to the left is a portion of the center also the beautiful
quilting that comes through when
viewed from the back. Thank you to
Cheryl Malkowski for allowing us to
use your pattern for a portion of this
quilt and for the quilting.. You are a
great friend of our Guild.
The picture at the bottom is of a close
up of the center of the quilt and as you
can see in this picture, the quilting is a
great asset to the quilt.
Tickets were sold at the debut of this
Quilt at the Douglas County Fair. We
will also be selling tickets at the Northwest Quilt Expo in Portland on September 22, 23 & 24, 2011.
Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.
Every member should try to sell at least
2 books, if not more, on this beauty.
Remember that the raffle quilt is our
main fund raiser every year. The proceeds from this help fund the Guild expenses for the year.
Thank you to Teri Gregg
for your wonderful photography so that we had some
pictures of this
“masterpiece”.
If you will be traveling, visiting with relatives, attending meetings of other organizations, or just in your daily travels, be sure to show
pictures of this quilt and
ask if they would like to
purchase a ticket or two.
This one will be selling itself.

2012 RAFFLE QUILT
Our 2012 Raffle Quilt is such a wonderful visual beauty that I thought that for this edition, it deserved a
whole page of it’s own.
I am sure that we will not have any difficulty in selling tickets on this creation. Thank you to Doris Koozer
and the rest of the committee for all the work that you have done on this one of a kind creation.

STRIP FABRIC
This year the membership decided that they
would like to bring in 2 1/2” strips of fabric rather than the charm squares or fat quarters.
You may take part in the drawing to win all the
strips by putting your name in the basket on the
welcome table. For each strip that you bring,
enter you name. i.e. If you bring in 3 strips
then your name goes in the basket three times.
There are many books and patterns that now
feature 2 1/2” strips (jelly rolls).
The following batiks is a partial listing of what
has been selected for each month this year.
September - Royal Red Batiks (strips)
October— Bold Blue Batiks
November- Sunny Yellow Batiks
The complete listing is in your membership
folder and a reminder will go in the newsletter
each month on the theme fabric/color.
What a great way to build up your Batik fabric
stash.
QUILT SHOW

winners of the guild’s 2012 judged show. Funding for the
awards comes from First Pacific Advisors, LLC, of Los

to all quilters, not just those living in the guild’s area.

TIPS:
When hooping fabric, it is very tempting to tug and
pull on the fabric to get it taut in the hoop. Be careful
not to pull too much, or you’ll stretch and distort the
fabric. Then you will have a puckered design and
would probably have to redo the whole thing.

Linda Ballard
Mark your calendars now as you won’t want to
miss any of these exciting events.
LUNCH BUNCH
Following the day meetings, there is a group of the
UVQG members that continue the fun by having
lunch together at Sandy’s Place , which is located on
the corner of Garden Valley Blvd and Kline Street.
Any and all are welcome to join in.
The menu for Sandy’s Place is in the membership

Dear Fellow Quilters,
Below is the description of an exciting class designed
specifically to accompany the Benton County Historical
Museum’s exhibit of New York Beauty quilts that runs
August 5 – October 1. I hope you will share this information with your guild members through your newsletter and other means. Attached is a flyer about the exhibition and workshop suitable for posting and distribution. I hope to see you there!
Thank you,
Eilene Cross
The New York Beauty quilt pattern, known by a variety
of names for over 150 years, is a bold and graphic design. Eilene Cross is teaching a workshop to accompany
the Benton County Historical Museum exhibition of
New York Beauty quilts that will help you master the
techniques needed to create one of these challenging
quilts.
Based on a Mountain Mist batting company pattern from
the 1930s, this complex quilt pattern challenges the maker by bringing together precision point-matching and
curved piecing techniques.
In this class you will learn the skills necessary to use paper piecing techniques to execute and assure really sharp
points. We will practice several techniques for handling
curved piecing including the revolutionary No Pinning
method as well as more traditional methods. You will
also learn how to do traditional Hand Piecing to triumph
over tricky set-in and Y seaming.
This will be a full-day class. Class size is limited. Contact the Museum for details and a list of required materials: 541-929-6230

COUNTRY STORE ITEMS
It is never too early to begin or finish your
items for the Country Store. Remember that
the Raffle Quilt and the Country Store sales are
where we obtain the funding for our budget
and the proceeds also enable us to do all that
we do: Charity Quilts, Patriotic Quilts, workshops, programs, etc. So if you have a great
idea for a project, contact Sue Westbrook. If
you just want to work on items of your own,
that is great also. All items are appreciated!

JO-ANN FABRICS VIP
DISCOUNT CARD
(continued from page 5)
FOGG doing a workshop in October? She will help you create a 30" quilt from
a photograph. It will be a one of a kind, your
own creation. Her work is amazing so check
her out.
Then in November Cheryl Malkowski will be
teaching a workshop on quilted postcards.
This class is a 4 hour class on a Saturday, to
make it easier for our working members to
attend. These fun small projects go together
quickly and would be great gifts or small wall
hangings. Come have some fun with Cheryl.
This year we will be sending out the workshop flyers by email but don't wait to sign up.
The prices are really low thanks to the hard
work we all do throughout the year fundraising. If you get into any of these workshops
anywhere else, they will be at least twice our
price. You can sign up at our meetings or just
send me your check.
I hope you are as excited about these opportunities as I am.

Jo-Ann Fabrics has discount cards that allows us to
save 10% on our purchases. Discount cards are not

enroll. Check the circle marked “VIP Discount Card”
and type in Umpqua Valley Quilters Guild in the
“organization name box”. You will then fill in your
name and address in the spaces provided, then click
“enroll now” at the lower part of the page. You will
receive your card in the mail. Then take this card to
Jo-Ann Fabrics, and show your UVQG membership
card and Photo ID in order to activate your Discount

spend! If anyone has a discount card, it more than
likely expires on August 31, so you will need to obtain a new one in order to get a discount after
September 1.

information as soon as possible to make sure that it is included in the next issue.
Whenever you find something that you have felt was of interest to you in regards to quilting, be sure to send
the information on to me if you felt that it was worth sharing. I am happy to include these items in the
monthly newsletter. We all run across different things that we think are great ideas and I am sure that others
would appreciate your sharing
If you are interested in any of the many workshops that are sponsored by the Guild, please contact Shirley
Pyle. Shirley will be happy to let you know all of the upcoming events and the availability of each.
Thank you to Country Lady Quilt Shop for continuing to quilt many of the charity quilts.
Thank you to Sandy Cook for the photo of Teri W. quilt and to Debi B for the photo of Linda G. quilt.
Thank you to Teri G. for the pictures of the Raffle Quilt
Be sure to let me know if your e-mail address changes. As I e-mail the monthly newsletter as a PDF attachment each month, if your e-mail address changes and you forget to inform me of the new address, then you
would not receive the latest edition. I try to have the newsletter out by the 1st of each month. So if you
have not received, you latest edition by that date, be sure to let me know. So that I can try to figure out what
has gone wrong. Also, if your mailing address or phone number changes, Nancy Murphy would also appreciate knowing. She tries to keep an accurate, updated of the roster at all times .
EVENTS POLICY








Registration for a Guild event is done on a first-come, first-served basis until the event is full.
Payment is required at the time of registration
Once you are registered for an event, no refund will be given.
If an event is full you may choose to be added to the “wait list” or have your payment mailed
back to you.
The Event Coordinator will set the date by which checks need to be received.
If for some reason you cannot attend an event, contact the event coordinator as soon as possible. If there is a waiting list, you may be able to “sell” your spot at the event to the first available
person on the list. If the event coordinator informs you that there is no waiting list you may find
someone to take your space. (Be aware that there may be a higher fee for non-guild members.)
The event coordinator MUST be notified of all changes.
This policy covers all guild-sponsored events, including, but not limited to, classes, lectures, and
trips.
It is also the Board’s interpretation that a member is a member when their dues are paid for the
current membership year.
