“WITH LOVE” VALENTINE CAKE TUTORIAL Supplies Fondant - White Gumpaste – Red, Dark Pink, Carmel Brown Petal Dust – Chocolate Brown Disco Dust – Ruby Red Gel Colors - Ivory, Chocolate Brown Candy Melts Round Tip #12 Brushes Rular X-Acto Knife Wood Grain Mat Heart Shape Cutters – 2 sizes Extruder Gumglue Roling Pin Herb Mincer Alphabet Letter cutter set Cookie Sticks Recipes Gum Glue Recipe Ingredients 1/4 cup Hot Water 1/4 tsp Tylose Powder Directions Add the hot water the container you are storing gum glue and sprinkle the Tylose powder onto the water. Do not mix cover the container and l et it rest over night in the refrigerator. Your Gum Glue will be ready to you the following day! 1|Page Instructions Step 1 Cover a 8” high 7” diameter double barrel cake with White Satin Ice fondant. Step 2 To make the Woodgrain panels, roll out a white fondant to a 1/8” thickness and then place the woodgrain mat over the fondant and roll it with a rolling pin to get the woodgrain markings on the fondant. Step 3 Cut 2” x 8” strips from the rollout fondant. For this cake you would need approx 10 strips/planks. Step 4 Mix Americolor Ivory with Chocolate Brown Gel Color and add a some water to dilute the mixture. Using a Fine tip brush, paint the lines on the woodgrain pattern. 2|Page Step 5A Let the painted lines dry for few minutes. Step 5B Using Chocolate petal dust, add some shading on the top and bottom edges of the woodgrain plank and in random areas of the plank. Step 6A Apply some pipping gell on the cake and attach the planks vertically as shown in step 6B. Step 6B 3|Page Step 7 Roll out a Red gumpaste into a #2 thickness in a pasta machine or to a 1/8” thickness using a rolling pin and make a smaller and a larger heart shaped cut out. On the larger heart, using a #12 round tip, cut out a circle on the top right corner of the heart and let the hearts dry overnight. Step 8 On the smaller heart, apply some gumglue and sprinkle some Ruby Red disco dust. Step 9 Roll a Red gumpaste to 1/8” tickness and using the heart shape template that’s provided cut out a heart and let it dry overnight. Step 10 Roll a Red gumpaste into a # 4 thickness in the pasta machine or to 1/16” thickness using a rolling pin. Then, use a herb mincer to cut out 1/4“ wide strips. Step 11 Take one of the strips and roll 1/2 of it into a tight coil as shown. 4|Page Step 12A Apply some gumglue to one side of the heart that you made in step 9. Step 12B Take the coil that you made in step 11 and place it on one side of the heart as shown making sure that the beginning of the coil is secured well with gumglue. Step 12C Make another coil and attach it to the other half of the heart and trim off the edges. Step 13A Make two more coils and attach them into a shape of a smaller heart as shown in step 13A and 13B. Step 13B 5|Page Step 14 Fill the heart by adding more coils to the heart. Step 15 Roll out a Dark Pink gumpaste into #4 thickness in a pasta machine or to a 1/16” thickness using a rolling pin. Then, cut out 1/4“ strips using a herb mincer. Step 16A Take the strips and roll them into tight coils as shown and secure the end of the coil by adding some gumglue. Step 16B Make a few more of these coils in different sizes. Step 16C Attache the coils to the heart topper on places where there is room and let the topper dry overnight. 6|Page Step 17A Roll out the Red gumpaste to 1/16th thickness and by using a alphabet letter cutout, cut out the letters “Love” and let it dry overnight. Step 17B Apply some gumglue to the letters and sprinkle Ruby Red disco dust on it. Step 18A To make the heart tag, take the two hearts that was made in step 7 and use candy melts to attach them together. Step 18B The smaller heart needs to be on top of the larger heart as shown. Step 19 Using candy melts attach a cookie stick to the back of the heart topper that you made in step 16C and let it dry for an hour. 7|Page Step 20A To make the String, color the gumpaste in a Carmel color. Using an extruder with the disc shown make two long strings that is long enough to go around the cake. You will need to make more of these strings later. Step 20B Take the string and twist both ends in the opposite direction to get a string/rope effect. Step 21A Follow the above steps to make another string and cut two 4 inch lenghts to make the loops for the bow. Apply some gumglue to attach the two ends together. Step 21B Crumple a tissue and then place the two loops on top to have some movement on the loops when dried and let it dry overnight. Step 22A Using candy melts start to attach the first string to the cake. Place the string 2/3rds of the way down from the top of the cake making sure it is attached diagonaly around the cake. 8|Page Step 22B Before attaching the other end of the string, attache the heart tag to the end of the string using candy melts. Step 22C Attach the other end of the string by making sure to pass it through the hole of the heart tag. Step 23 Attach the second string diagonally onto the cake. Step 24 To make the tails ends of the bow, cut two 2” - 3” length strings and attach them to where the two ropes crosses each other. Step 25A Using candy melts, attach the two loops of the string as shown in Step 25A and 25B. 9|Page Step 25B Step 26 Use two 3/4” length strings and attach them to the center of the bow to make the knot of the bow. Step 27 Attach the letters “Love” to the cake using candy melts. Step 28 Finally, attach the Heart Topper to the top center of the cake by inserting the cookie stick into the cake.
