Square Beats is a music feast of many music genres, ideologies and
realms of the globe. The main theme is unity in music through
diversity of cultures. Featuring performers from different parts of the
world: Ghana, Ethiopia, Andes region of South America, Bolivia, Peru
and Ecuador…this music concert is like the heart beat to the City
Square that takes you on a roller coaster ride through the imagination
and beyond.
Inka Marka Sat, 7 Aug @ 1- 3 pm
Inka Marka’s energetic performances include traditional and
contemporary music from the Andes region of South America, Bolivia,
Peru, and Ecuador. The music has its own flavour, combining both
traditional folkloric and contemporary styles of music, a mix that
makes them different from other Andean bands. Inka Marka combine
the haunting melodies of the Pan flute and Quena with the rich string
sounds of the Guitar, Charango and Violin, while their song repertoire
includes ethereal and mystical melodies of the Inka nation, of times
past and almost forgotten.
The Ethiopian Circus Band Sat, 4 Sep @ 1- 3 pm
The Ethiopian Circus is one of the most amazing and unique Circus
groups in Australia. The group was originally established in Ethiopia
and very soon achieved world wide fame. This unique group
combines Circus acrobatics and performance tricks with exciting
African dance and Ethiopian music in brilliant full colour costume.
Their exciting performance is guaranteed to warm the heart and move
the feet.

Janette Hoe
A Malaysian-born Chinese, Janette Hoe’s active involvement in dance began
in 1995 as a dancer with Taro Dance Theatre, a pioneering butoh company
in Kuala Lumpur. For 5 years, Taro provided a learning platform for her
development in improvisation, physical theatre, choreography and artistic
direction. Apart from being company dancer, choreographer and co artistic
director in productions for dance festivals, gallery openings and corporate
events, Janette also collaborated with many other dance companies and
independent dancers.
Janette now is busy collaborating with Tomoko Yamasaki at Drag King
Nights, and performing with artists from different disciplines including Tony
Yap and Yumi Umiumare. She has performed in the Melbourne Fringe
Festival, Brunswick Festival, Beyond Butoh Festival (2002 & 2003), Moomba
Waterfest and the Autumn Equinox Harvest Festival held at CERES.
Janette is also a graphic designer and has strong visual aesthetics. Her
choreographic vision is heavily influenced by butoh. Janette’s performances
are often captivating and at times visually provocative, as they are
presented in a montage of fashion, fused with theatre and movement. She
is currently immersed in inter-cultural themes and issues of identity.

This mini festival (Beyond Butoh) provides the opportunity to investigate,
explore and stretch the limits of what we understand as the intrinsic
meaning in Butoh. The long term vision for this series is a grander scale
festival encompassing all idiosyncratic interpretation of Butoh in performance
from local and international artists. We plan to invite international guests
each year to stimulate the artistic vision in the local community. We aim to
develop this festival as an annual event in Melbourne.
Program A - (22-25 Sept) Hong Kong dancers, Victor Ma and Mandy Yim
will perform “Invisible Contact” in a double bill with Tony Yap and Yumi
Umiunmare in their internationally acclaimed work "How could you even
begin to understand? #30-33" with the aim of contrasting "Asian bodies"
between two countries.
Program B - (15-18 Sept) 16 local Butoh performers perform “The Night
within the Day”, directed and choreographed by Tony Yap & Yumi
Umiumare. This is a performance of movement, sound and sight in a
dreamlike landscape. A landscape of an urban hallucination in motion.

The Victorian Writers’ Centre
Vicki Tsaconas
Vicky Tsaconas writes primarily poetry, but also essays and critical
reviews. Her poems have been published in Hobo Poetry Magazine
and Antipodes. This year, her work will be published in a Collective
Effort Press collection and an Owl Publishing anthology. In 1996
she won second prize in the Poetry Section of the Greek Australian
Cultural League Literary Competition and in 2003 one of her
poems was Highly Commended in the Daffodil Day Arts Awards.
Vicky was one of the founding members of DIFWNIES (Difonies)
Journal of Greek Australian Thought, to which she also contributed
a number of essays. Her essays have been published both in
Australia and overseas in journals such as LIKE Art Magazine,
ARTI, O LogoV and Senses of Cinema and her reviews in ARTI,
BEAT, Senses of Cinema and Prattle.

Celebration of Peace and New Beginings

Experience centuries of art and the cultural treasures of one of the most sophisticated,
complex and misunderstood cultures in Europe. The Bosnian community has come
together for the first time to share this unique culture with the wider Australian audience.
This night is a spectacular a celebration of Bosnian culture showcasing performances by
local community talent including classical and folk musicians, a community choir, folk
dancers, spoken word/poetry, visual arts and theatre. The night’s program is a cultural
blend of traditional and contemporary themes traveling through time and different regions

The Moreland Turkish Association will be hosting a Turkish Wedding on
10 Oct @ The Plenty Rangers Arts & Convention Centre, Ferrers Blvd South
Morang. 1pm – 5pm
This project is proudly supported by Multicultural Arts Victoria
Performers include: Bosnian Vocal Ensemble ‘Sevdalinka’ – a Cappella and four part
harmonies performing traditional Bosnian songs; Jasna Dolic – soprano, performing
traditional and contemporary classical Bosnian music; Ivica Knezevic and Damir
Kalajdic – performing pop and contemporary Bosnian music; Jasmian Dolic – accordion
and Kadir Dulovic – Saz, performing traditional centuries old Bosnian music and songs;
Saidin Mido Salkic and Fatima Deovic – poetry and spoken word performance; Bosnian
folk dance group – Deer Park – traditional folk dances; Amela Usanovic – Belly
dancing; Virtual Visual Arts Show – showcasing professional artists, great community
talent and cultural/museum artifacts
The “Anatolian Weddings” ceremony, is an event celebrating Turkish culture
and traditions with members of the broader Australian community. The
traditional Turkish Wedding ceremony will be displayed through a theatrical
format making it unique and memorable experience. Refreshments and finger
foods will be served.

The audience will be “Guests” at the wedding. Invitations will be sent to guests
to attend the wedding ceremony. Guests will be asked to bring a symbolic
ceremonial gift. A small entry fee will be charged for the wedding. This project
is not for profit. All gifts and moneys collected from the wedding ceremony will
be donated to The Royal Children’s Hospital – Cancer Ward. For this reason
guests will be asked to select “Gifts” that will be suitable for children.

The last few months have been extremely busy but
rewarding for Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV). I would like
to thank all the staff and volunteers at MAV who have been
just amazing and have worked tirelessly to present some
fantastic events in Melbourne.
There was the very successful Global Voice concert at the
Iwaki auditorium, which was a full house and broadcast on
Music Deli, ABC Radio National and the well attended and
strongly supported Refugee Festival, held on World
Refugee day plus the high quality Square Beats music
series at Federation Square. Congratulations and special
thanks to Anita Larkin who coordinated the Refugee
Festival. MAV also facilitated two funding workshops in
partnership with the Melbourne City Council for our artists
and communities to strengthen diversity in the arts in the
City of Melbourne.
MAV recently toured talented Sufi musicians, the Rona
Ensemble, to Adelaide for KULTOUR. Rona are soon to
head to Brisbane and then Tasmania in the coming
months, after their three exquisite performances in
Adelaide, at the Iwaki and Footscray Community Arts
Centre in Melbourne.
KULTOUR is an extremely important initiative of the
Australia Council. Normal touring circuits and mainstream
presenters and producers will not take risks with new and
emerging or "unknown" artists and products, for what they
consider ‘untried’ work, outside their perceptions of
‘mainstream’ public tastes. They question whether there
will be an audience for the work. MAV believes that
presenting quality diverse "unknown" work will assist in
developing new audiences and that there is a large
untapped audience for multicultural arts.
The issues have been constantly raised by our artists, and
it is clear that they themselves do not have the resources
and can not be left to address the issues alone. The
problem was highlighted through the need to establish SBS
and 3KND to give the artists a voice for their music and
arts practice. In fact, indigenous and multicultural music
and arts have been considered more of a novelty, more
exotic and unknown. One of the problems we are
addressing is the lack of performance experience our
artists have in a real sense and the lack of representation,
a catch 22.
We thank the Australia Council and KULTOUR for bringing
exceptional multicultural arts to all corners of Australia and
to developing new audiences and to ensuring that diversity
in the arts is a priority.
Another significant out come of KULTOUR is that the
national multicultural touring network has implemented a
strategic plan which has identified the need to have a
national support worker for the network to assist in the
development of the national network and touring

opportunities. The KULTOUR position is
to be based at Multicultural Arts
Victoria and is to be part time, three
days a week. The position will be
advertised locally and nationally. It is
an exciting development that will be a
key to the growth of KULTOUR.
MAV is currently working in partnership with three
communities on cultural development projects. Cultural
programs are a valuable way of exploring identity and
developing a language of exchange that can be used to
foster diversity and harmony within and between cultures.
In September we will all be able to experience the
sophisticated Bosnian culture to mark the International Day
of Peace "Celebration of Peace and New Beginnings" a
multi-art form event to be held at the Trades Hall in
Carlton. In October we experience rich Turkish culture
through the presentation of an "Anatolian Wedding" in
Thomastown. Then in Heidelberg there will be a series of
Somali cultural workshops within the Somali community.
We have seen glimpses of the Somali culture at Black
Harmony and the Refugee Festival, so it will be a timely
project to ensure the development of traditional arts and
culture in the community. It is fantastic to see all three
communities coming together to share and express their
culture within their community and also with the wider
community. Promoting creativity through community
celebrations is one of the most positive ways of
maintaining cultural vitality and for enhancing the well
being of the community.
MAV is keen to stimulate more activity in this area. MAV
will bring together the VMC, Arts Vic, Vic Health and the
City of Yarra in a funding information session for our new
and under represented artists and communities to work
towards successfully gaining funding for their own
community celebration. This session will be on July 30th at
6.00pm at the Fitzroy Library. MAV is confident this will
lead to more vibrant arts activity that we can all benefit
from.
The MAV Board of Management is also making steps to
review our Constitution so we can receive Deductible Gift
Recipient status and to be on the Register of Cultural
Organisations, so if you have an interest in this area,
please let us know. We will be convening a meeting of all
interested members later this year … as I said it has
been busy at Multicultural Arts Victoria. We thank you for
your support …look forward to seeing you all at Inka
Marka (August) and at the Ethiopian Circus band
(September), at Federation Square.
