OTIS TIMELINE
Otis Timeline
1916: General Harrison Gray Otis, an L.A. Times
publisher, donates his Wilshire Blvd home to L.A. County for the advancement of the Arts. 1918: Otis Art Institute is established, the first independent professional school of art in Southern California. Tuition was $80 per year. Otis Past
1954: The school's academic program is restructured so that BFA and MFA degrees are offered.
1978:
Otis merges with Parsons School of Design in New York and is renamed to Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design.
1991:
Otis becomes independent of Parsons and changes its name to Otis College of Art and Design, a privately funded institution. 1997:
Otis moves to Westchester into a former‐IBM research facility on the newly named Elaine and Bram Goldsmith Campus. Otis Present
2001: The Galef Center for Fine Arts opens with new studio space including the Ben Maltz Gallery. 2009: Otis is accredited for the maximum 10‐year term by NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) and WASC (Western Association of Schools & Colleges). 2010: Otis’ campus continues to expand with new studio facilities opening in the North Building. Otis Future
2015: Plans are to begin construction on a new 91,000 square foot residential and academic building with a 300‐seat capacity auditorium space. Your Pay Pay Checks = semi‐monthly

Hardcopy checks can be picked up at the Cashier’s Window (located in the Ahmanson Bldg 2nd Floor) on pay days. Hours of Operation: Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri (8:30am ‐ 4:45pm); Wednesdays (9:00am ‐ 4:45pm)
NOTE: Paychecks not picked up will be kept at the Cashier’s Window.

What is it & why do I need it?
Your X‐number is a unique identifier which will give you access to post grades, use library resources, browse the College’s O‐Space, and retrieve other Otis‐Community information. Where do I find it?
Your X‐number is printed on the front of your Otis ID Card. How do I get my Otis ID? Otis IDs are taken in the Student Lounge – the room behind the Security Desk on the 1st floor of the Ahmanson Building, Monday – Friday, 9am‐5pm. Parking at Otis
and Carpooling to Otis
Parking is free! But you must display a permit at all times.
For part‐time faculty, parking stickers are available from your Dept Rep. Carpooling = preferential parking 1st floor of the Goldsmith parking structure. Contact the Benefits Manager to see if you qualify for a carpool parking permit.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
What is FERPA?
FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Why do I need to know about FERPA?
As faculty of the College, you are legally and ethically obligated to protect the confidentiality of student education records. All student information must be treated as confidential, including public or directory information. How does FERPA relate to my job?
You are prohibited from sharing student records without written consent from the student or without a business need within Otis. When in doubt …..

Workers Compensation What to do in the event of an accident?
Workers’ Compensation
ALL faculty, staff and student workers are covered by Otis’ workers’ compensation insurance if you are injured while working on the job. What is workers’ compensation? Workers’ compensation is a form of insurance providing wage replacement and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of employment. What if you experience a work‐related injury or illness?
 Complete an online Incident Report at: http://www.otis.edu/forms/faculty‐staff/incident‐report/
 Contact Human Resources so that a report to the workers compensation insurance carrier is made and the claim process can be initiated.  The insurance carrier will send you information regarding treatment. What if you experience or witness an accident or someone is injured? 1) If an injury is severe or life‐threating, call 911.

Part‐time faculty are allotted 24 hours of paid sick time from their hire date.
The sick leave benefit is renewed and reset to 24 hours on an annual basis.

The Otis website includes a Self‐Service platform where final course grades are officially recorded.

Travel & Other
Off‐Campus Activity
Otis encourages student travel when properly planned in accordance with the College Travel Policy .
When assigning or conducting travel with students, please read and follow all Travel Policy guidelines.
Plan ahead and provide students with Assumption of Risk and General Release Agreements for signature; collect and retain all signed Agreements in your department for safekeeping.
Consult your department administration when planning student travel.
Course Credits/Hours
Please follow NASAD and WSCUC guidelines:

Each course credit represents approximately 3 hours’ work, either in or out of class, over a 15 week semester.
•
A 3‐hour studio course with approx. 3 hours’ homework per week typically provides 2 credits. •
Likewise, a 3‐hour LAS class with approximately 6 hours’ homework provides 3 credits.
•
6‐hour studios with approximately 3 hours’ homework per week typically provide 3 credits.

As a member of the Otis Faculty, you are part of the Emergency Response Team:

Students will look to you for a calm, organized response.
Call 911 immediately in the event of an emergency (i.e. a student faints or passes out, seizure, etc.).
Contact the Otis Security desk at (310) 665‐6965 (Goldsmith campus) and your Department Office.
Contact Human Resources at (310) 846‐2597 and file an Incident Report within 24 hours.
Remember that students need your guidance in emergencies.

Shared Governance is conducted through Academic Assembly and Faculty Senate (Part‐time faculty are welcome to attend; Adjunct and Full‐
time faculty are voting members).
Lectures, film screenings, visiting artists, student exhibitions, student affairs events, Integrated Learning Fairs, student sales, shops, labs, and extra‐curricular activities are all open to faculty members.
