Prohibition
T
he dark chapter of US history known
as “Prohibition” famously gave birth
to bootlegging and rum running, but
it also was crucial in the establishment of
a now-glorified craft: micro brewing and
distilling.
The following poem, first published by the
Cincinnati Enquirer illustrates this point
quite humorously:
“Old Ben”
Each night, for more than 40 years,
He drank a couple of good beers.
He never would exceed that number,
He said that beer promoted slumber;
It was a tonic, so he said,
And to him it was liquid bread.
He said that whisky poisoned men,
He was against it, was Old Ben.
So he went out and voted dry,
To kill the bourbon and the rye.
He killed the whisky, but, oh, dear!
He also found he’d killed his beer.
He needed beer, and he was sad,
As we travel around the world offering our
consulting services and teaching our Rum
University Courses, we often see splashes
of this “Bill McCoy Spirit” among the people
we talk to: bartenders who want to learn
more so they can provide better service
to their clients, craft distillers who want to
produce better rums so consumers have a
higher appreciation for rum and consumers
who want to better understand the difference
between low and high quality distillates.
Now in a cell we hear him groan –
While prohibition has certainly exhaled its
last breath, its effects continue to this day,
from speakeasies to micro distilleries, all
happy to pursue their passions without fear
of sharing Old Ben’s fate in a cell!
For Old Ben tried to make his own.

In this issue of “Got Rum?” we honor the
memory of Bill McCoy, a renowned rum
runner during this challenging phase of
America’s history. We honor him not because
of his disregard for the law, but because
of his passion for distilled spirits and his
understanding and appreciation for quality.
Ultimately it was this quality-driven attitude
of his that fueled the meaning behind the
now famous “The Real McCoy” expression.

Mt. Gay Black Barrel
T
his year witnessed the release of
several new r ums to the mar ket plac e.
M ount G ay Blac k Bar rel is a small batc h
r um that is blended using double distilled pot
still r um and single distilled c olumn still r um.
It is aged for an unspec if ied amount of time in
heavily c har red used Bour bon bar rels, then
blended to 8 6 proof using Bar bados c oral
f iltered spr ing water.
A p p ea r anc e
The t all bot tle has a long nec k that desc ends
into a f lask shaped bot tle. This is a var iant
f rom the st andard M ount G ay bot tle designs
and I found I liked it. The long nec k made it
easy to handle and it popped of f the shelf in
the store and behind the bar. The wood and
c or k c ap is sealed with a long sec ur it y str ip.
The f ront label is also a depar ture f rom other
M ount G ay designs. O ne thing I liked is eac h
bot tle is individually numbered; mine is A Z
3 9740. The bac k label shares the histor y of
the c ompany and basic det ails about the r um
in tiny, wor th - the - read sc r ipt.
The r um is muc h lighter than I expec ted when
you c ompare it to M ount G ay XO or 1703,
maint aining a pure amber hue in the bot tle
and glass. W hen I gave it a light swir l, thin
bands appeared with fast moving legs that
dissipated quic k ly.
A ll of these fac tor s mar r ied with the lac k of
an age st atement makes me believe we are
dealing with a fair ly immature blend of r ums
for this produc t.
A ro ma
The aroma has a pleasant vanilla note,
followed by roasted almond, and f inishes with
light spicy c har red oak notes.
Palat e
I found the entr y interesting. Right up f ront
the t annins f rom the c har red oak light up the
mouth. A s they set tled to for m the base note,
I disc overed a lush vanilla, roasted almond,
c aramel, followed by a hint of banana and
dr ied f r uit. The f r uit notes c ar r y into the
f inish, mingling with the c har for a toast y,
slightly ac idic f inish.
Revi ew
In my opinion, M ount G ay Blac k Bar rel is a
bold depar ture f rom the nor mal f lavor s that
I have exper ienc ed f rom the M ount G ay line.
This r um has the signature banana note that
is present in all M ount G ay produc ts, but has
the oak y t annin r ic h prof ile one might f ind
in a W hisk y or Bour bon. W hen using it in a
c oc k t ail, think about how the c har notes will
play with the other c omponents of your dr ink.
I found going the route of a M anhat t an var iant
or Rum Sour was the best way to wor k with it.

I found the c har note c reated a pleasant smok y
var iant of a Cuba Libre, but did not enjoy it as
muc h in a Classic Daiquir i as it did not blend
well with the sweetness of the dr ink. The
tr ic k y c omplexit y of the r um is par t of the f un
and wor th the c hallenge. W hile c ompar isons
with M ount G ay Blac k, whic h was br ief ly on
the mar ket, are inevit able, Blac k Bar rel has
long ter m st abilit y that the gimmic k of the
“ Blac k ” label c ould not provide.
I look for ward to seeing what the c ompany
releases nex t as it c ontinues to diver sif y its
line.
