2014 INNOVATIVE Lithuania INNOVATIVE Lithuania A message from President Dalia Grybauskaitė Lithuania has taken a large step forward in developing new technologies and becoming a hub of innovative ideas and talent. Lithuania can be proud of its strong Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector, well developed laser sector, emerging biotechnology and promising cleantech sector. A huge investment has been made by the Lithuanian Government to create 5 integrated science, studies and business centers, so called “high tech Valleys”. These “high tech Valleys” concentrate on finding high level specialists and talented students to carry out world leading research activities in newly established laboratories, with modern infrastructure and equipment. Major innovations and technological events currently take place in Lithuania such as the Vilnius Innovation Forum and the annual LOGIN conference in IT. These events attract well-known innovation leaders and experts, entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises, policy makers and researchers from the EU and abroad. Lithuania has become a hub of innovative ideas and talent. The flourishing of creativity, openness to innovation and experimentation has been addressed to universities and businesses. The entrepreneurial spirit has been highly promoted to established start-up and spinoff companies by fostering new ideas to market. We feel that the globalization of product and service markets is accelerating. Lithuanian companies as well as Europeans face increasing competition not only for sales, but also for technical know-how and skills. Therefore it is important in the long run to foster business investments in R&D and innovations, to bridge the gap between research and market by helping innovative enterprises develop their technological breakthroughs into viable services and products. I believe that we are moving in the right direction to be a successful innovative knowledge based country. The surface of the vibrating water is lit by a preferable color and the photo of the sound is taken. The photograph is made into an artwork, printed, framed and sent to the client along with the certificate of its originality. The picture contains a QR code that enables one to listen to the original visualized sound at anytime. Your personal business Corporate System Investigator Since 2000, Proginta has been providing IT solutions for manufacturing companies and advising the management of production flow. They found a consistent pattern of factors that leads to a company’s success, which is the ability to control three streams: cash flow, product flow and information flow. Generally cash flow is the responsibility of the financial department. As cash flow for any company is required as oxygen is for people, cash flow is strictly regulated by using IT solutions for debt servicing and various financial instruments to finance activities that is monitored by high-level financial professionals. Product or service management flow is as important as blood for a firm. It can circulate quickly or slowly, but as long as it flows, the company remains in existence. This vital flow affects the supply chain, reliability, performance, marketing and sales. Information flow acts as the human nervous system. If a person has some form of nerve damage, a person may not feel hot or cold temperatures, but they continue to live. Since a person can live with these minor nerve damages, it also applies to many businesses with the knowledge that their data is more or less correct. However, this determines 42 By studying these three streams, Proginta has found that in order for businesses to succeed, especially when production schedules are constantly changing, the price for raw material is constantly fluctuating, companies must pay special attention to the management of information flow in a timely, reliable way that keeps them free from errors. Reliable information will allow them to identify the most limiting factors and will allow them to concentrate on their removal. Proginta combines different competences such as software development and ERP deployment by having deep international consulting expertise based on supply chain and production management using the latest TOC and LEAN tools and methodologies. Proginta has been providing Information Flow management services in Ukraine and Europe since 2008. Services include: classic consulting, IT solutions, daily work with data flow and Reports The goal of Proginta services is to arrange a company’s Information Flow in such a way that the company management or Lean, TOC, Six Sigma consultants could easily recognize where to direct their attention to increase efficiency of production flow and the reliability of client services. Proginta developed a special 3tonis solution which helps to breakdown the daily systemic analysis of an entire company. 3tonis systemic analysis will specify production disturbances, their causes and their ratings. The solution is integrated with the production lines and acts as automatic traffic surveillance equipment and software, which allows clients to quickly and easily generate the flow of movement and anomaly reports. The purpose of the analytical reports is to identify negative factors using historical data to agree on needed management solutions that need to be solved, so that management can develop systematic management solutions, by solving the systemic disruption in the flow of production. By Identifying negative factors in real-time. The purpose of real-time analysis is to inform personnel about identified negative factors ASAP. The strategic aim of the enterprise is significant consolidation in the market of people flow counting systems. Despite a relatively short track record in the market, SEMS Technologies has already taken part in various international exhibitions. One of the keystones of this business is a product called SEMSeye – a solution for automatic people flow counting. It consists of a fully embedded standalone device mounted on the ceiling, a data center based on cloud computing and a statistics platform to monitor and browse people flows. SEMSeye enables to register and count visitors in stores, museums, exhibitions or any other institutions being visited by significant numbers of people. Moreover, the device can be installed on moving transport units (cars, taxis, ferries, buses, metros, etc.) to calculate the passengers. The collected data is sent to servers using internet connection (Wi-Fi or wired LAN mode). Clients can monitor the information and access the analytics remotely on the web using computers, mobile phones, tablets or other smart devices. As a 44 source of information regarding visitors’ flows, this intelligent gadget helps to: • Measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, which may consequently be turned into increased income; • Compare the popularity of one object (e.g. store) to another, thus finding the most visited; • Discern the differences between trade seasons, gaining the possibility to precisely forecast future sales; • Find peak hours and determine optimal opening hours; • Adjust shift schedules; • Set the air conditioning and other automated systems to work more economically; • Compare customer visits to weather conditions or any other impacts; • Decrease expenses and allocate resources. Observing the changes in image brightness caused by movement, the SEMSeye device counts people flow with an extremely high 96 % accuracy. If a customer moves through the cross line ordinarily, it will always be counted. The device is light, easy to fasten and install for the end-users and requires no specific IT or engineeringrelated professional skills. If the internet connection is down the device will not lose its accumulated data. The SEMSeye device still will register the data and save it in its internal memory and once the internet connection recovers, the stored data will be immediately transmitted to a server. All collected and processed information is visible to the users in their SEMSeye account, enabling to provide such functional options as expanding the network of owned devices and seeing the data of a particular device. The requirements for SEMSeye are: good illumination in the counting zone, internet connection, electricity and a browser. The SEMSeye is a remarkable choice, enabling businesses to collect important information and increase income by 10-15 %! Creating a service that increases confidence and reliability among business partners Vajare is a young company, established by mature professionals and operates in the field of real estate development. The business is project based, where it is essential to create a cost effective project and implement it with reliable partners. Dilemmas constantly arise in all businesses, such as: how to choose business partners correctly, how to find the right balance between price and risk. Many business management solutions have been developed that deal with pricing, procurement, accounting, etc., however no system exists that enables one to verify or to compare risks related with a partner’s reliability is actually available. Third party guarantees, sureties, insurance only mitigate the problems caused by unreliable partners. Credit ratings are focused on financial obligations. Frequently, this is not sufficient because the criteria important to the customer are not included into the The name Confidensys stems from two words – Confidence and System. It is an information system designed to increase confidence among business partners where human communication, clear information collection and processing technologies are combined together. Confidensys collects information, verifies data, compares it with alternative offers and provides it to the final user in a systemized and easily understandable way. This service allows the Customer to make quick business decisions such as: when to arrange a meeting with a potential partner, when to start negotiations, when to ask for additional information, when to sign an agreement, or when to say good bye to them. This system is also beneficial for information providers. They will be able to save the information they have furnished as a profile. It can also serve as a form of advertisement for the company because it will be possible to find essential information on the company of the greatest interest to potential customers as well as its reliability rating in one place. To ensure legal protection of this system and method, a patent application has been filed at the International Bureau of WIPO and a grant has been received from the Lithuanian Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA). 54 Contact information: E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.confidensys.com 55 Visual & Softworks for Science and Technologies Visual & SOFTWORKS is an advertising agency specialising in the fields of science and technology. Robots usually replace human tasks that are repetitive, physically demanding or dangerous to ones health. Welding is an example of such a task. Robotics - the perfect tool for progress Established in 2008, ATC Baltic‘s main activities include programming, maintenance and sales of welding and palletizing robots for industry. ATC Baltic is the official supplier for the Japanese firm OTC DAIHEN for welding robots and welding equipment. ATC Baltic sells and maintains OTC DAIHEN welding robots, which occupies 90% of the robotic welding market in Asia. ATC Baltic collaborates with worldclass industrial tools manufacturers such as Atlas Copco, Abicor Binzel and ESAB. Projects in the pipeline include working with the Swiss company Güdel, which is recognised for a wide range of mechanical power transmission and rail construction technologies, which allow robots a wide range of movement to acheive certain tasks. ATC Baltic founders Šerlinskas Aurelius and Thomas Kaučikas, beleive that the robot is not a competitor for human hands, but a more perfect tool to acheive tasks quicker and more effectively. One company that invested in robots, found that employees had a constant fear - when will they be laid off? It‘s nothing like that. The man with the robot will acheive more, but at the same time will earn a living. That‘s the essence – it‘s the perfect tool. After all, once upon a time people were scared of mechanical harvesting. Would you like to go back to harvesting by hand? - asked A. Šerlinskas. Another ATC Baltic goal is to introduce robots in other industries. They serve us well in logistics, packaging, food and other light industries. Company executives say that this is inevitable. Robotic time is unstoppable. They will inevitably change our daily lives. Holland safety laws prohibit workers lifting of heavy loads and working on their knees. It is not surprising that these types of work have been taken over by the robots. T. Kaučikas provide specific examples of practice: Business owners who have introduced robots claim that one robot replaces seven welders. The robots perform the work faster and of higher quality than people. Robots do not ask to eat or to increase their salary. We are a company that offers innovative, effective solutions to the manufacturing industry - from tools to robotic systems. One of the newest ATC Baltic projects is to build a mechanical wheel washing system for the Lithuanian Railways. It is unique system since the wheelsets are not only cleaned by a high-pressure stream of water, but also mechanically with rotating brushes. This unique cleaning method, will be useful for wheelsets of train wagons that travel in Eastern where it is not so clean. The project is innovative since the washing process of the axles is fully automated. 80 Contact information: E-mail: [email protected] Web: www.atcbaltic.com 81 Supplying manufacturers with metal fittings for robotics equipment Baltic Innovative Technologies is a modern highprecision CNC machining center which employs 25 highly skilled employees. Tavira offers turnkey solutions, which starts from the sketch right to the completion of the project by performing design, all the general construction work, equipment supply and installation. It is always important to understand the client’s desires and try to fulfil them while maintaining the highest quality of the final product. Tavira employs highly skilled professionals who have acquired their experience through many years of managing swimming pool construction projects. They also attended practical seminars hosted by leading companies of pool equipment production in Europe. Tavira is also a strong player in plastic (polypropylene) swimming pools and various tank production. In the past few years they invested a lot of effort designing swimming pool shapes and training production staff. This helped them to maintain a high quality of their products. They have already sold and installed a lot of polypropylene pools in Lithuania and since 2012, they started to export them to Scandinavia, Latvia and Estonia. They also produce different kinds of tanks and other products from polypropylene that are used for industrial purposes. 86 Dealing with swimming pool owners on a daily basis enables Tavira to understand what is the most important to pool owners - crystal clear water. Everyone knows that there should be clear water in the pool, but they also know that it should be healthy water that is non-irritant for the skin, hair and eyes, allowing peerless comfort when swimming. The water should also not cause risk of allergies and be corrosion and odour free. It is always a big challenge to maintain all these characteristics of swimming pool water, since water quality may not be optimal. It is influenced by bathers and nature itself. To maintain pristine water quality, algae, organic matter, microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi), metalions, phosphates and nitrates must be dealt with. There are a lot of water treatment technologies on the market, but there is none that is able to keep the best water quality with all the properties mentioned above. Some use too much chemical products, other are too much expensive or very difficult to maintain. In 2010, Tavira started collaboration with the ETTD Institute for the development of new technologies for swimming pool water treatment. Currently, together with ETTD, they are developing a new advanced technology that utilises sources of so called cold plasma. This innovative technology allows Tavira to treat water with ultraviolet radiation and the bombardment using different kind of ions created in cold plasma at the temperatures between 4070°C. Such a treatment may be very effective and would enable the elimination of most of the microorganisms, which would allow the water to maintain high oxygen levels. They offer a variety of seminars (informal adult education), English language courses in accordance with the CALLAN method, business consulting and a weight loss school. 108 They would like to introduce people to a new psychotherapeutic technique, called integral neuroprogramming. In 2013, they officially registered psychotherapy as an added direction of this public institution which includes all possible psychotherapeutic treatments. This methodology was developed through a longstanding practice course by professor Sergei Kovalev. By raising the question of what are the goals of psychotherapy, he noticed that patients can be divided into four groups, depending on their needs. 1) Degradation and loss of suspension. Various treatments for - overeating, alcohol, gambling, computer addiction. In this context, this method has not changed. A person trained by a specialist can help a close friend with such an addiction. 2) Internal and external self-organisation, by providing intense application. This is designed to help people who are looking for a better career path or higher remuneration for their efforts. 3) In terms of a meaningful personal existence and relationship with oneself, others and the world. Too many people suffer after a divorce or by experiencing unrequited love. This technique is well suited for people who have experienced a variety of early childhood traumas. It is also suitable for psychologically affected women who have experienced domestic violence. 4) Self- transcedence by existing outside the boundary of reality. This module is very useful for singles , especially for those people who would like to start a family, but still fail. Very often they are prevented because of painful experiences in early childhood. This is a psychotherapeutic work system. This system is able to effectively deal with any psychosomatic problem, from virtually any origin. It is important to understand that this system is quite simple. This therapy works very well and and can be applied in groups. They develop solutions that are designed for energy efficiency and operational cost optimisation and loss reduction. Smart and Green City solutions for utilities uses mobile applications to help organise employees to optimise their work management efficiently. A heat - slope control system allows for the monitoring of technical parameters to be tracked in real-time to capture emergency situations, enabling you to quickly respond to accidents, thereby reducing losses and avoiding emergency heat supply disruptions to consumers. This system also allows users to evaluate their heating needs and will optimise the supply to these customers. Solutions for water supply companies allows for a remote control center of all water extraction and wastewater treatment technologies. This allows users to drastically reduce the cost of maintenance and act as as an early warning to accidents, damage or failure. 134 A significant part of the price of a centralised water supply system includes the price of electricity. They created a grid resource management system, which allows the optimisation in the use of electricity waterworks and sewage treatment plants. A home information system allows residents to control and manage their own consumption of heat, water, electricity. A buildings information system optimises the buildings utility needs, thereby reducing maintenance costs. An analogue system installed in public buildings allows the reduction of heat consumption by 30 percent or more. Another sector that uses Smart and Green City solutions are utilities companies. A garbage collection monitoring and management system centralises the management of garbage collection areas. This allows one to envision the realtime garbage collection process, enables for better planning and optimisation of waste collection routes and to assess the quality of the collection, thereby promptly responding to inquiries or complaints. Smart and Green City solutions have been developed with the latest IT technology which makes these systems more efficient and user-friendly. Lithuania ‘s energy efficiency is currently about 2.5 times lower than the EU average. Unfortunately, only recently has the state been paying attentionto this inefficiency. Currently they are manufacturing products in nine different categories. Greeting cards have more than 100 different variations. The full product range can be seen on their website www.cozywood.com. Trees are traditionally recognised as a symbol of strength and warmth, which emit positive energy. Wooden greeting cards are a new original product that are not only sold in Lithuania but also abroad. Kordis has participated in the international exhibition Paperworld 2013 in Frankfurt (Germany). At this fair, they received a lot of attention due to the materials used and their exclusive designs. Kordis has also established business relationships with companies from Thailand, Finland, Australia, and Japan. They 136 Currently, Kordis has more than 50 outlets in Lithuania selling their products and this number is constantly growing. Over the last six months, the number of outlets has increased by 20 percent. Therefore, some of the strategic directions of the company are to ramp up production capacity, develop exports and increase sales of folded wooden greeting cards. These cards are a unique product across Europe because no one produces thin folded wooden greeting cards. Another important activity of the company is to widely commercialize wooden card innovation so that plastic cards will be changed to wooden cards. Since wood is natural and environmentally friendly, five times less wood is required during the manufacturing of wooden cards compared to paper ones, therefore they use less energy and do not use environmentally harmful chemicals compared to the manufacturing of plastic cards. In addition to producing wooden cards, Kordis has created the first wooden smart cards, a product designed for those who appreciate technology and those who think that wooden cards are not exceptional enough. These greeting cards that are made of natural wood are decoratively embedded with a 2D (or QR) code! Each card is unique, since people can place their greetings, pictures or web address on them. In the future Kordis plans to expand the range of these cards by collaborating with animation and IT companies. Metal adhesion specialists Companies of Amiagus group has developed special coating technologies (Plasma spraying, High velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying) for thin foils that solve the most complicated task – getting good adhesion of the coating to metal strip substrate and at the same time obtaining needed porosity, specific surface area and chemical composition. After spraying the metal strip (with thickness 30 – 50 microns), coated by special layer (with thickness 10 – 15 microns) consisted of hydroxides and metal oxides, undergo mechanical treatment, including corrugation, perforation and rolling up into the catalytic unit (Fig.1). - High specific surface area of the coating compared to others metal based ceramic coatings - usually 70-80 m2/g but can reach up to hundreds of m2/g (Fig.2); These requirements make the process complicated and various methods are proposed for effective solution of this problem. Metal substrate of our catalytic coating is the key figure in the end product, because there are a lot of applications where usual ceramic support is not suitable or not economically effective. Properties of the coated metal support: - Good adhesion of the coating to the metal support. That allows to perform mechanical treatment - cutting, corrugation, twisting, rolling etc. after spraying without peeling of the sprayed layer; - High thermal and electrical conductivity that gives an opportunity to change construction of the reactor to more efficient and heat catalytic block by electric current; - Low weight compared to the most of ceramic substrates used for analogical purposes; Developed technology is the basis for different catalytic applications, such as catalytic units for gas and oil reforming, tars decomposition, exhaust gas refining for chemical plants and cars, etc. This technology permit realize totally new catalytic unit with internal gas ionization (Fig.3), where discharge arise in each longitudinal channel of honeycomb structure, along the contact area of corrugated and flat metal strip. The technology is protected by application for invention according PCT procedure. Fig.2. It is expected that the new technology, with a capacity of 1 MW, will provide interest not only in Lithuania, but also from farmers in the EU and CIS countries. Pioneers of straw combustion technology For the development and implementation of this project, Axis Industries has received 1.16 million LTL support provided by the European Regional Development Fund. Another pillar which will support Lithuania’s aspirations to become energy independent is the next generation of energy straw combustion systems designed by bio energy pioneer and country leader Axis Industries which has 20 years of experience and expertise in this area. A new generation of an energy straw combustion system is being created by the collaboration of 10 companies that fom a team of specialists with help of scientists from the Lithuanian Energy Institute. Axis Industries, which belongs to a leading group of companies in Lithuania that develop effective engineering solutions for the industrial and energy sectors, is currently carrying out the last stages of straw for biofuel boiler model testing and this new work will soon be presented to the Lithuanian and foreign markets. Axis Industries specialists developed a straw burning energy system consisting of: a fuel supply, a combustion chamber with water-cooled grate, a water boiler, flue gas cleaning, a chimney, automation and process control systems. The boiler is designed to burn pellets and round, as well as rectangles straw bales. Straw fuel moisture content compared to wood chips, the most commonly used types of biofuels, is much lower and averages about 10-20 percent. This fuel has an extremely undesirable characteristic, which is a low ash melting temperature. Because of these properties, straw cannot be used in the combustion chamber, which is designed to burn wood chips. Thus, the Axis Industries team has developed a brand new furnace with a water-cooled grate, which, together with the boiler consists of a single module. The combustion by-products leaving the chamber are contaminated waste matter. In order to reduce the environmental impact of the boilers, a multicyclone flue gas cleaning system is used. The boiler control system is supplied by a programmable logic controller (PLC), a graphic operator keypad and anoperator workstation whichare necessary components. Axis Industries is deservedly regarded as the pioneer of bio energy in Lithuania. They have developed and introduced the first boiler fired by wood waste. Axis Industries designs, develops and installs biomass boiler equipment, bio fuel storage, fuel transportation and sorting equipment, furnaces, boilers, smoke and ash disposal equipment automation equipment. Axis Industries installs and implements automated energy systems adapted to straw and other biofuels combustion and heat production, supply boiler equipment commissioning, debugging, maintenance, service, repair and maintenance work. The Axis Industries Group of Companies employs more than 850 employees, including 400 that are certified in a variety of different fields. 144 Contact information: E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.axis.lt 145 Innovative reusable compressible plastic bottle The goal of Eco-friendly bottle is to develop and implement innovative packaging for various products that are practical to use. Their goal is to market packages that can be reused, thereby preserving the earth‘s resources. For example, the manufacture of a one-liter plastic bottle with water, consumes 0.25 liters of oil, 7 liters of water and 104.2 grams of emissions of carbon dioxide (gCO2e). Currently, Eco-friendly bottle plans to market a multiple use compressible UFO bottle, whose primary goal is to encourage consumers to drink less from disposable bottles, thereby reducing plastic bottle waste. 146 The UFO bottle can be compressed by hand and snapped together, which when compressed reduces in size by 9 times, making it practical to carry around everywhere. Various public places are planning to install drinking water machines (micro- aquatic plants) that would allow multiple UFO bottles to be filled. This would be a great opportunity for consumers to take theirr drinking water wherever they go and at the same time conserve water consumption from disposable bottles. The UFO bottle is protected by proprietary laws in many European countries, including Lithuania. At the European Commission organised “World You Like“ competition in september 2013, the UFO bottle was evaluated and received 6 th place. Contact information: E-mail: [email protected] Website: www. ecofriendlybottle.com/efb 147 Up until now it was almost impossible to use lignite of 4000-1000 kcal/kg calorific value and 3550 % moisture content, because of a variety of compositional issues. Currently combustion of such fuels pose no problems on their equipment utilising a bubbling fluidized bed and equipped with LEMOX’s novel control technology. The technological solution that LEMOX is able to provide can reduce the requirements for utilised fuel quality thus enabling consumption for energy generation of materials which would otherwise be considered as pure waste. Also in many cases it reduces the price of constructional materials. All this can result in total savings reaching 20 to 30%. Bubbling fluidized bed investigations started more than a decade ago as a means for the efficient combustion of solid fuel, such as wood and wood waste. It was observed that in reality fuel parameters often do not match the declared and projected ones which leads to a low efficiency combustion process, loss of boiler power and increased cost of equipment operation. One of the major environmental issues is cleaning polluted soils with oil and oil products as well as shale oil. Systems, developed by LEMOX, allow organisation, execution and monitoring of the combustion processes utilising such soil on an industrial scale through bubbling fluidized bed technology. LEMOX has already designed mobile units of 2.0 MW thermal and 0.5 MW electric power for the use in regions affected by ecological disasters or the sites where significant quantities of oil contaminated soils have been accumulated. Among the many advantages of LEMOX’s technology that can be realised: • Utilisation of almost any fuel type with very poor quality parameters. Fuels such as wood waste, peat, straw, oil contaminated soil, manure, sewage sludge and so on can be used as an energy source. Humidity of the fuel can even exceed 70%, while mechanical contamination is almost irrelevant and the calorific value of fuel can even be lower than 800 kcal/kg; In order to solve these problems LEMOX began research activities on fluidized bed solid fuel combustion equipment. The very first such apparatus was made by LEMOX in 2004 and had a capacity of 1.25 MW. It has a continuous spherical bubble cap grate and was suitable for the combustion of different kinds of solid fuel including peat, wood and crop wastes. In a conventional fluidized bed apparatus, sand is heated up to 1100 °C and is lifted by the energy of speeding air flow. Due to the fact that sand must be transported in very large amounts, constituting thousands of tons, many different problems arise, mainly associated with durability issues of different surfaces which results in costly repair and replacement works. After years of continuous research and experimental activities, LEMOX recently developed the fourth generation of equipment which meets all the requirements for physical-chemical organisation and control of the combustion process. Such equipment can be widely used in different industrial sectors and for the generation of energy. LEMOX’s innovations result in minimising and optimising of boiler performance and operation costs. Among other advantages, electricity consumption for generation of energy unit is reduced by up to two times. Innovative solutions for solid fuel combustion 148 • • • • • Capacity of an energy generator may vary in an extremely wide range from 0.3 MW to 60 MW and more. There are no restrictions for the area of the fluidized bed. It can be decreased or increased automatically when there is a need to increase or decrease the capacity of the boiler (operational limits are from 15% to 100 % of nominal capacity); This novel system can be installed in operational fluidized bed boilers without the regard to their capacity and purpose; Intensity of clearing the fluidized bed material and delivering it back into the boiler are set according to the relevant requirements and can be achieved in either automatic or manual mode; Intensity of the combustion process and its fluctuations have no influence on the “boiling” intensity of the fluidized bed since it remains constant at preset levels at all times. In the the road sector, Panevėžio keliai is constantly engaged in design and construction works on the Trans-European transport network (TEN), such as the Via Baltica highway and a number of other European highways such as E67, E28, E77, E85, E262 and E272. Railway infrastructure development projects are among the top priorities for Panevėžio keliai. The company has a solid portfolio of current and completed projects. Railway sector projects consist of building and reconstructing railway tracks, bridges and viaducts on the international Crete transport corridor branches IX, IX-B and IX-D, as well as standard European gauge railway construction for the Rail Baltica project. the “hot on hot” method allows for paving both top and bottom asphalt layers simultaneously. The top layer is laid immediately on the bottom layer which is compressed and heated. The “hot on hot” method eliminates the need for a binding agent – bitumen emulsion. Not only are both asphalt layers glued together, but due to high temperatures they bind into a homogenous layer, which increases the pavement resistance to wearing. The width of laid asphalt pavement using this this method varies from 3 to 7.5 m without the conjunctive seam. Road surface coating reinforced with glass fibre – Glass Road In 2011 the company adopted a new technology road surface coating reinforced with glass fibre. The progression of the new surface coating technology consists of the first binding layer (modified bitumen emulsion), followed by a layer of shredded glass fibre and a second binding layer. The crushed stone layer is laid on top and compressed in the final stage. Design and construction of gabions Gabion is an engineering structure designed to serve as a retaining wall which prevents soil slides, washouts and erosion caused by weather conditions. A system of bound elements composes the peculiar retaining walls that support the outer slope. Panevėžio keliai has received the prestigious Innovation Award in Lithuania in 2011 for the development and application of modern technologies and the Latvian national award in 2013 for impeccable work quality. Asphalt paving technology - “hot on hot” method Panevėžio keliai is the only road construction company in Lithuania that has applied and successfully used this new technology. The main direction of the company is to commercialise new technologies in the field of smart solidstate lighting, UV sensing (partner with Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc., USA) and measurements technologies (official Labsphere Inc., USA partner). Ledigma acts as a manufacturer (OEM also), consultant and R&D partner. Ledigma’s team of lighting professionals work with modern light- emitting diodes (LEDs), which develop and optimise the illumination spectra for certain objects or scenes. Their lighting technology, patented by the University of Vilnius (Lithuanian patent No. 5913, PCT application WO2013009157) allows for the control and management of two very important parameters of illumination, colour temperature and colour saturation (colour gamut area). The flexibility of colour temperature allows getting the illumination from firelight (1800 K), from daylight or even starlight (>10000 K). The colour saturation management enables one to shrink or expand the colour gamut area. In other words, by means of wireless colour parameter control, one can create sunrise, daylight, sunset of starlight atmosphere by pressing a single 154 button on a smartphone or any other device which has web browser and Wifi connectivity. If the naturalness of the illumination is desired, the colour rendering index (CRI) can be maintained at the values of 95 and higher. Ledigma focuses on illumination of art- works, jewellery, textiles and gobelin tapestries. By optimising the colour rendering parameters, the photochemical damage to the sensitive objects is reduced and the colour expressivity increases. Their technology allows for the gamut area of rendered colours to be increased significantly while decreasing the photochemical damage index by up to 30% in comparison to traditional incandescent lamps. The combination of colour rendition control algorithms with the presence of illumination sensors and other intelligent control systems allows one to achieve energy savings as well as the preservation of valle art exhibits. Department of Laser technologies The aim of the laboratory is to develop new technologies of improved optical coatings, to develop new optical components extremely resistant to laser irradiation that have complex spectral characteristics that are increasingly relevant to manufacturers of lasers and their systems. The main direction of the scientific and applied research are the improvement of UV physical characteristics of coatings, optical coatings with the controlled group speed dispersion for femtosecond pulses and the improvement of technologies of evaporation of metal oxide compounds. A new research direction in the laboratory is optical coatings with a specific microstructure (sculptured thin films) intended both for optical elements and the production of various sensors. Three main technologies of optical coating formation are applied in the laboratory: evaporation by the electron beam, magnetron sputtering and ion beam sputtering. Three advanced devices based on these technologies have allowed the development of very precise control of controlled processes. New processes of coating formation based on these technologies are continuously developed and improved. Department of Materials Science and Electrical Engineering Their mission is to develop a scientific and technological base for research & development in materials engineering, electrical engineering and electronics for public and business needs, to apply the new perspective techniques for using strong magnetic electric fields in materials science, biology, biochemistry, environmental and other fields of research and implementation of obtained scientific results. The department seeks to continuously improve their workers’ skills and cultivate young scientists and other researchers.
