Bangladesh manufactures 2-3% of world leather
production
>50 manufacturers are involved in producing items
like footwear, hand bags, travelling kits, suitcases,
fashion accessories, wallets etc.
Export takes place to more than 50 countries and
total export of leather goods was around US$ 385
millions in 2008/2009. In July-December 2010 an
export increase of 30% was reported compared to
the same period the year before
Large domestic supply of quality raw materials is
among the driving forces
A strong trend of moving production from China
and Taiwan to Bangladesh is seen. At least 7 new
footwear factories are currently under construction
By 2013 the footwear industry alone is expected to
be a billion US$ industry (US$ 205m in 2009/2010)

Under the GSP Bangladesh has for years been excepted
from paying import duty when exporting to the EU and US
markets
Until 1st January 2011 a product needed to have 60% value
added in Bangladesh to become valid under the GSP rules.
From 1st January 2011 and onwards a product only needs to
have 30% value added in Bangladesh to become valid under
the GSP rules
The change is expected to have significant impact on export
from Bangladesh. For almost any kind of production a
company can now setup an assembly plant in Bangladesh
(and import all raw-materials) and obtain duty free access to
the EU-market
Compared to countries like China, Vietnam, India etc. the
duty free access reduce import costs with 9 to 12%
