County told it owes $85,000, not sure why
DREW TAYLOR
Managing Editor
In over 10 years on the
Geneva County Commission or
as Chairman, Fred Hamic said
he had never even heard about a
large outstanding bill, but that bill
is something the Geneva County
Commission would have to deal
with.
At the beginning of Monday’s
county commission meeting,
Hamic read aloud from a letter
from the office of Attorney Bill
Baxley of Montgomery, detailing
how Geneva County owed his office over $85,000 in legal bills for
unspecified service. According to
Hamic and County Attorney Phil
Eldridge, the service may have
something to do with a redistricting issue between 1994 and 1995.
However, it is possible that the
issue may go as far back as the mid
1980s.
“What we have is a blank request to pay without explaining
anything,” Commissioner Joe
Howell said.
The commission ultimately
followed Eldridge’s counsel to re-

view past minutes to see why the
commission had enlisted Baxley’s
services, and in addition to interview former Probate Judge and
Commission Chairman Harold B.
Wise, who served during that time.
In other business, Roger Wise
with the Geneva County Volunteer
Firefighters Association signed a
resolution that gave the lease of the
Eunola Town Hall to the group.
“I promise you that we will take
really good care of it,” Wise said.
In addition, Hamic told the commission he had recently met with a
realty agency in regard to potential
land to build a new county jail.
Although he didn’t elaborate on a
specific location, Hamic said the
agency had made a deal for a threeacre plot, totaling over $300,000.
The commission didn’t take any
action, but decided to discuss the
matter at a later time when more
concrete possibilities were available.
County Engineer Justin Barfield
requested that the commission provide his department with two offsite lavatory facilities in Samson
and Slocomb. Barfield said that
after gathering several estimates,

he had found an offer of $80 a
month for both facilities. However,
Commissioner Johnny Windham
suggested that in Samson, the only
necessary thing would be to hook
up to the city sewage line, which
would only cost the department
$24 per month for one facility. The
commission decided to table the
request for a later meeting.
In his departmental report,
Sheriff Greg Ward elaborated on
how the Sheriff’s Office is hurting
due to the fuel budget that is being
affected by rising prices for gasoline.
“Looking at it, we’re far ahead
than we were last year,” Ward said.
Ward said the department’s main
fuel usage goes toward inmate
transports, which ran as high as 200
gallons of gas in March.
“It’s cutting in on us pretty
heavy,” he said. “There’s just a lot
of things that need to be done. With
the way it’s going, we’re not going
to make the gas budget.”
Ward also informed the commission that he was looking into installing new software to replace the

In last week’s Samson City
Council meeting, the issue of
amending the city’s alcohol tax
was discussed and was tabled for
another meeting after no decision
being made on the matter.
Council was unable to come to a
decision on whether to amend the
city’s alcohol tax from 10 percent
to 2 percent. In a special meeting
held a few days prior, the council
had agreed that an amendment to
the tax would be needed in order
for local businesses that serve alcohol to still be competitive against
the Geneva ABC store and package
stores located across state lines.
“In my opinion, it’s a matter of
the state being in direct competition
with local business,” Mayor Clay
King said.
Making his case to the council
on why the amendment would not
help local business, Four Aces
Owner Fred Smith addressed how
a tax on something that hasn’t even
been sold yet is a tariff and doesn’t
help his business compete the best
it can.
“There are just some things I
can’t force to sell,” Smith said.
According to City Clerk Hazel
McGowan, Samson has collected
over $2,150 in tax since initiating
the ordinance. On this note, the
council agreed that it would continue to look further into the matter,
deciphering what would be the best
course of action in amending the
ordinance.
In other business, the council
approved a measure to declare one
of the police department vehicles
to be “no longer needed for public
use.” The vehicle has reportedly
needed extensive repairs in the past
and is beyond repair currently. The
council also approved the expenditure report for March.
“Coming under budget is something to be proud of,” King said.
The next council meeting will be
held Tuesday, May 2, at 5:30 p.m.

Troy Athletic Director
Steve Dennis spoke last week
ti the Geneva Rotary Club
about what is going on at the
university.
Dennis, who has been with
Troy since 2005, first addressed the university’s relationship to Geneva, which he
said has been a very good one
over the years.
“You are all so lucky to
have a university of that
caliber so close to home,” he
said.
Dennis said the university
is preparing for its 125th anniversary in 2012, as well

year in terms of how to be a
better institution.
“We are not limited to just
southeast Alabama anymore,
but to the rest of the world,”
he said, detailing how Troy
now has students from all
parts of the world, including Beijing, Hanoi and Troy,
Greece. “What we’re trying
to do now is train the generation for the world.”
Dennis said Troy is finally
starting to receive national
attention for its dedication
to education, being listed in
Forbes and U.S. News and
World Report as one of the
best regional universities in
the Southeast. Dennis also
praised the university for its
dedication to military services.

Anita Motley with the Geneva County School System
gave the presentation to the
Geneva Lion’s Club Monday
afternoon.
Motley, who works as
nutritional director for the
county schools, said that in
the last year, the system has
been taking major strides toward healthier foods served
in the cafeterias. Specifically,
the system was able to apply
for and was awarded a grant
through the USDA Fruit and
Vegetable program, which
was given to Geneva County
Elementary School.
“What the program tries to
do is teach nutrition education to children for healthier
eating,” Motley said.
As part of the grant, Geneva County Elementary was
able to take part in creating
their own garden, growing
fruits and vegetables as varied
as strawberries, cabbage, carrots, broccoli and tomatoes.
Last week, many students
were able to see the fruits of
their labor by digging up carrots they had planted late last
year, washing them off and
then enjoying them for a nice,
healthy lunch.
Motley said her department has tried to be creative
when it comes to getting students to try new foods. One
example of this creativity

was to hand out trays to various classrooms with fruits the
children would like, as well
as other fruits and vegetables
they might not have had before, such as jicama.
The school has also held
programs about the five major food groups—which include dairy, meat, vegetables,
fruit and bread—as well as
holding discussions on why it
is important to eat healthy.
Motley said she is applying for the same grant to go to
Slocomb Elementary School.
The next Lion’s Club meeting will be held Monday, May
9, at noon at Carol’s Seafood
and Steak.

Dennis said that with all
the exemplary coaches on
staff with Troy, his job is a
little different than one would
originally think.
“What my job does is to
give these coaches the tools
they need to be successful,”
he said.
Dennis also said that with
many facets of the athletic
department experiencing success, Troy would be seeking
more bowl affiliations with

Layoffs announced for city school system
The Geneva City Board of
Education met last week, discussing potential layoffs within
the system as well as a hike in
the price of lunches.
Superintendent Ricky Bennett updated the board on the
status of Alabama education,
saying it is still unclear where
the system stands in terms of
funding amounts. He also informed the board on the proposed measure in the Alabama
Legislature that would increase
benefit costs for retiring teacher 2.5 percent.
In addition, Bennett commented on how the divisor for
grades on a statewide level has
now increased by .45 students,
which could cost an estimated
1120 teachers to be laid off.
With Bennett’s recommendation, the board terminated
17 non-tenured personnel until
funding matters could be han-
dled properly. Typically, many
in this scenario would be hired
back before the beginning of
the school year, but with the
state education budget in critical condition, these numbers
could change.
The board also voted to raise
lunch prices for the upcoming
2011-12 school year, increasing from $1.25 to $1.50, with
teachers and visitors being
charged $2 and $2.50 respectively. According to board records, this is the first increase
in lunch prices since 1999 and
were reportedly the lowest
prices in the state when nestled
at the $1.25 mark. Despite
this increase, there will be no
change to the price of breakfast. The school calendar for
2011-12 was approved. Four
dates were confirmed in the
process:
•Aug.2- First Day for Teach-
ers
•Aug. 8- First Day of
School
•March 26-30- Spring
Break
•May 25- Last Day of
School
dated program his office currently utilizes, giving an example of how pistol permits
are still done on the old system. In order to fund the purchase, Ward said he would
take money out of the pistol
permit fund to provide for the
new software.
Barfield said he had just
sent out packets to several
state politicians, such as State
Rep. Donnie Chesteen and
U.S. Rep. Martha Robey, that
detailed the struggle his office
had been having with FEMA
in terms of sitting down and
discussing how to properly
fund several bridge projects
in light of the December 2009
floods. He said his department
would be installing five cross
drains around the county, specifically near Windsor Road,
Pates Road, Sammons Road,
Trailer Road and Container
Road.
Hamic discussed the ongoing case former employee
Donna Jones has against the
county commission, saying how 10-12 charges had
already been dismissed in
connection with District Attorney Kirke Adams, former
Assistant District Attorney
Stephen Smith, Sheriff Greg
Ward and former Commissioner Ray Minshew. Specifically, Hamic pointed to how
the main charges in the case
are how the commission allegedly violated Jones’ right
to due process and the First
Amendment.
“When this is over, I’m going to have a lot of comments
on this, but I can’t now,”
Hamic said.
The next commission
meeting will be Monday, May
9, at 9:30 a.m.

Protect ‘Mother Earth’
T
Ryan versus Obama
T
MICHAEL REAGAN
here is a struggle now being waged in Washington, the outcome of which will determine
whether the nation’s economy will grow or
continue to falter.
The main combatants are President Barack Obama and a thoughtful member of Congress from the
nation’s heartland, Rep. Paul Ryan,
R-Wis.
One of them, the president, represents the theory that government
needs to regulate every facet of the economy. The
other, Rep. Ryan, champions the economic freedom that has made the United States the wealthiest
and most free nation on the face of the earth.
Ryan, who chairs the powerful House Budget Committee, has outlined a program he calls
a “Roadmap for America’s Future.” It leads to
economic freedom, warning that “Washington’s
leaders have taken an already unsustainable budget outlook and made it far worse” by exploiting
“Americans’ genuine economic anxieties to justify
an unrelenting and wide-ranging expansion of government.”
Their agenda, he warns, “has included, among
other things, a failed, debt-financed economic
‘stimulus’; an attempt to control the Nation’s energy sector; increasing domination of housing and
financial markets; the use of taxpayer dollars to
seize part ownership of two nearly bankrupt auto
makers; and, of course, the planned takeover of
Americans’ health care, already heavily burdened,
manipulated, and distorted by government spending and regulation. This domineering government
brings taxes, rules, and mandates; generates excessive levels of spending, deficits, and debt; leads to
economic stagnation and declining standards of
living; and fosters a culture in which self-reliance
is a vice and dependency a virtue -- and as a result,
the entire country weakens from within.”
For his part, President Obama sees government
regulation of almost all facets of the economy as a
vital tool, appointing so-called “czars” to oversee
large segments of the supposedly free U.S. economy.
This struggle will determine whether our economy, once a beacon of freedom, will continue to be
mismanaged by unelected bureaucrats.
As this is written, the economy is in a tailspin.
Echoing Ryan, respected fiscal monitor Standard &
Poor’s warned: “The continued failure to come up
with a credible medium-term fiscal reform program
would increase borrowing costs for all segments
of US society, thereby undermining investment,
employment and growth. It would also curtail foreigners’ appetite to add to their already substantial
holdings of US assets. And it would weaken the
dollar.”
Ryan’s website describes key points of the roadmap::
• Medical Care: “It provides universal access to
affordable health coverage, not by expanding government, but by reinforcing the role of consumers
-- patients -- in a truly competitive marketplace. In
conjunction with this, the plan takes on the necessary task of restructuring the government’s medical
entitlements, making them sustainable for the long
term.”
• Social Security: “It saves and strengthens
Social Security, making the program sustainable
for the long run, and helping expand investments
needed for economic growth.”
• Taxes: “It offers an alternative to today’s needlessly complex and inefficient tax code, providing
the option of a simplified mechanism that better
promotes and rewards work, saving, and investment.”
• Jobs: “It helps the Nation’s workforce prepare
for success in the global economy by transforming 49 job training programs, scattered across eight
agencies, into a flexible, dynamic program focused
on results, and accompanied by clear measures of
transparency and accountability. The plan requires
the development of performance measures, and
gives each State the option to consolidate funding into one program, if such an approach can be
shown to improve outcomes and achieve job training goals.”
Clearly, Rep. Ryan’s roadmap points the way to
a robust economy free of government meddling,
while Barack Obama’s way guarantees a dreary
economy managed by power-crazed Washington
bureaucrats.

SUSAN STAMPER BROWN
he United Nations’ (UN) current plan to discuss a treaty proposal granting more rights to “mother earth” than humans is
nothing more than an elaborate attempt to re-market the climate change program in a neatly wrapped package
called “environmental justice.”
The UN proposal, drafted by Bolivian socialist
president Evo Morales (the same guy who claims
that eating chicken causes male baldness and homosexuality), is similar to a new Bolivian law which
elevates trees, animals, insects and “living things”
to the same level as humans. Raised to this new
level, mother earth and her “living things” would
be assigned an authorized representative to hear
complaints brought on their behalf and would have the right to seek
financial compensation for damages.
All bug-stomping humans beware: Morales’ proposal does not stop
at financial compensation but goes a step further to execute judgment
upon the guilty by organizing a “tribunal for climate justice.”
During an interview at the 2009 Climate Change Summit, Morales
said his plan to save the planet included ending luxury and consumerism, while destroying capitalism and forcing rich nations to settle
their “climate debt” to the poor. Morales said capitalism is “the worst
enemy of humanity.
It may be just me, but does it seem that the human race has gone
stark raving mad that some would think it is reasonable to ascribe human rights to grass and bugs? One can only hope that someone will
also provide delegates with a clean sandbox to play in during recess,
provided someone is there to monitor the rights of the sand fleas. It
is tempting to dismiss this plan by Morales as ridiculous as the UN
naming Iran to a women’s rights panel last month, but it seems Morales has ready and willing partners in the U.S. administration.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson spoke last week at the Power Shift 2011 conference assuring an
audience of young, impressionable minds that the EPA has “restored
science to its rightful place as the backbone of everything the Environmental Protection Administration does, and that includes the science of climate change. We are using that science to take action on
climate change.”
Layman terms: Cap-and-Trade legislation based on junk science
failed, so the Obama Administration used the EPA to go through the
back door. No wonder some prefer the EPA to be defunded.
Highlighting her list of accomplishments, Jackson revealed her
crème de la crème was expanding “the conversation on environmental justice” - that “unfinished business” - in “low and minority neighborhoods.” Jackson reassured the activists that Obama needed them
to stay focused on promoting their beliefs that “there is no difference
and choice to be made between a healthy economy and a clean and
healthy environment.”
Van Jones, the past Obama White House “Green Czar” who resigned in 2009 after his “green socialism/environmental bias” leanings surfaced, also spoke. During the conference, Jones placed an
Atlas-sized burden on the shoulders of these easily influenced kids
when he told them that “the entire planet, the children of all species
are banking on you.” Jones assured the audience that although he
loves “rich people,” he intends to cash in on their money to fund the
green movement cause.
In a Jan. 30, 2005 Miami Herald editorial, former Greenpeace cofounder and president, Dr. Patrick Moore said he left his own organization because “much of the environmental movement, made a sharp
turn to the political left and began adopting extreme agendas that
abandoned science and logic in favor of emotion and sensationalism.” It’s only gotten worse. The once wholesome and worthwhile
goal to protect the planet was hijacked and turned into a pseudo religion - by some who care more about transferring America’s wealth
than they do the environment.

Geneva native, pastor, helping with tsunami fundraising
Brayden Wilson Johnson
Brayden Wilson Johnson was born Jan. 17, 2011, weighing
7 lbs. 9 ozs. to Jamie and Tori Johnson of Geneva. Brayden is
the grandson of Huie and Alicia Brown of New Hope, Fla. and
Jimmy Lee and Lisa Johnson of Elba. He is the great-grandson of Wilson and Ruth Brown, Florence Hughes and the late
Ronnie Hughes, all of New Hope. He is the grandson of Elaine
Royer, the late Johnny Driggers, Fred Johnson and the late
JoAnn Johnson, all of Elba. He is the great-great-grandson of
Mozelle Watson and Melonee Brown.
A Geneva native that pastors a Japanese United Methodist Church in California
is helping
raise funds
for earthquake and
tsunami
relief in Japan.
The Rev.
Dr. Anna
C r e w s
C a m p house, the
d a u g h t e r Anna Crews
of J.D. and Camphouse
Paula Crews
of Geneva, pastors Christ
United Methodist Church in
Santa Maria, California just
north of Santa Barbara. The
church is working with the
Santa Maria Japanese Community Center to provide
relief for tsunami victims,
and is participating in major
fund-raiser at the Town Central Mall in Santa Maria on
May 15.
Camphouse said that when
word came of the earthquake
and tsunami she called a
prayer meeting. After that
members began developing
ideas for fund-raising and
soon the congregation found
many others in the community that were also eager to
help.
Camphouse said the fundraiser has the support of a
variety of different religious
faiths, the mayor, the Chamber of Commerce and many
others. Inquiries have been
sent to Japanese celebrities asking for them to be
involved, including helping
with auction items.
“People from all over
are participating,” Camphouse said. “It’s a chance to
do something for someone
else.”
The Japanese background
of the congregation is, of
course, a major incentive for
their involvement, Camphouse noted. Like Geneva,
“everybody knows each other,” and the tight-knit community easily came together
to help relatives and friends
in Japan.
“They are so polite and
provide great hospitality,”
Camphouse noted. “They are
as sweet as they can be.”
There are members of the
congregation that were forcibly interned during World
War II, and Camphouse
praised the members for their
forgiving spirit about that
tragic incident in American
history.
“They learned forgiveness,” she said. “They let it
go. They haven’t forgotten
it but they moved through
it.” There is even one member that survived the atomic
bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
Crews was involved in
mission work in Japan before
becoming pastor of Christ
UMC. Her husband, David, also pastors a Methodist
church in the area. For more

Wise helps Wigs for Kids for the fourth time
DREW TAYLOR
Managing Editor
It can be argued that when
a child loses their hair as a
result of rigorous chemotherapy sessions and medication,
a part of who they are is lost
as well.
However, many people,
such as 14-year old Anita
Wise from Geneva, volunteer
both their time and their locks
to those in need. For Wise,
cutting her hair has been a
longtime way to show her
support for cancer patients.
“I feel good when I do it
because I’m giving to other
people,” Wise said. “I just
like helping people,”
Last week, Wise donated
her hair for the fourth straight
year to Wigs for Kids, an organization based out of Ohio
devoted to creating hairpieces
for children. For the last four
years, she has had her hair
cut at Classy Cuts in Geneva,
which is a partner with Wigs
for Kids.
Wise was informed about
the organization through a
teacher at her school and was
more than happy to donate her
long brown hair to charity.
Because of her good will,
her own service has affected
those close to her, including
her own family.
“I’m very proud of her,”
mother Pattie Wise said. “She

In addition, Classy Cuts
owner Denise Gomez said she
is also proud of Wise, saying
she doesn’t charge for the cut
because of who it would be
benefitting the most.
“I’m proud of her because
she keeps coming,” Gomez
said. There are over 40 locations in Alabama and Florida

The Miss Fadette queens helped the Fadette Volunteer Fire Department as they gave a
$500 check to the department. The funds donated by the pageant will go toward providing supplemental two-way radio batteries for all members of the FVFD. The key to
incident mitigation begins with communications between responders and other agencies
and without extra two-way radio batteries during times on extended operations such as
severe weather or large scale long duration fires firefighters would lose the ability to communicate between responders which is a serious safety issue. A portion of the funds will
also go toward the purchase of three structural firefighting helmets to provide adequate
protection to the volunteers who serve the community.

Lohman-Greene engagement
On Saturday evening, Dec. 18, 2010, Danny Jack Danley
and Shelby Jean (Jeannie) Marlow were united in holy matrimony at Gateway Christian Church in Sevierville, Tenn.
One week before Christmas, such a magical time for a
special occasion, the couple was surrounded by family and
close friends during an intimate ceremony. The church was
simply decorated with Christmas poinsettas, white roses and
white candles. To honor her mother and father, who have
both passed away, Shelby placed two white roses on the front
pew in their memory. The bride was escorted down the aisle
by her father-in-law, Jacky Danley. A casual reception followed at the Apple Barn Restaurant in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Danny and Shelby were high school swee-hearts. The couple
were reunited at Shelby’s 20-year class reunion in October
2009 in Geneva. Danny proposed to Shelby on July 2, 2010,
in the same place where his mother and father were married
nearly 42 years ago.
Danny is the son of Jacky and Susan Danley of Samson.
Shelby is the daughter of the late A.G. Marlow of Black and
the late Norma Marlow of Geneva. Danny is employed by Reliable Metal Prodcuts in Geneva.

cooperatives play in it.
Participants will attend
special sessions on leadership, citizenship and career
opportunities, as well as enjoy
recreational activities, such as
swimming and canoeing.
WEC is accepting applications to send several

The Geneva County Bulldogs took care of business
on the first night of the playoffs, sweeping Fruitdale 5-3
and 14-8 in the best two-outof-three series to advance to
the second round of the state
baseball playoffs. Jack Riley
went the distance for the win
in Game 1 as the Bulldogs
took a 5-0 lead and held off
the visiting Pirates. “I went
out there to throw strikes

said. “With a team that can

Coach Ben McNeal
praised Riley’s completegame performance.
“We made a couple of errors, and if you take the errors out of the mix Fruitdale

Bubba Pollard kicked off
South Alabama Speedway’s
2011 Viper Series with another win, but things were a
little different in Victory Lane
this time.
Instead of the familiar red
No. 18, Pollard’s car carried
camouflage on the sides, with
a bright orange “08” on the
doors. It was a tribute to Beau
Slocomb, a fellow racer and
good friend who recently lost
his battle with cancer.
Pollard set fast time in
qualifying with a time of
15.516. Inversion put Brandon Odom on the pole with
Sam Smith on the outside.
Pollard lined up fifth on the
starting grid. Odom grabbed
the early lead and led the first
five laps. On the sixth circuit,
Mike Garvey moved inside of
Odom to take the point. Pollard had settled in the third
position.
Garvey led at the crossed
flags, followed by Odom,
Pollard, Korey Ruble, and
Will Mack. With 25 laps to
go, Garvey led Pollard, Ruble, Odom, and Mack.
Pollard erased Garvey’s
lead and went to work on the
leader. The veteran driver
never gave Pollard the inside,
so on lap 77, Pollard went to
the outside.
They raced side by side
for a lap, but Pollard was
too strong on the outside and
gained the spot. Once out
front, Pollard eased away
from Garvey to take the win
by 1.364 seconds. Odom was
third. Smith followed Odom
past Ruble for fourth.
The Street Stock class ran
its Rattler Feature originally
scheduled for March 5. Chris
Salter led all 25 laps, but
Johnny Otto made sure he
earned it. Slater grabbed the
lead from the outside pole,
followed by Billy Maxie and
Otto. Otto got past Maxie on
lap three, and spent the rest
of the race chasing the leader.
Otto got a break with a caution with five laps to go. Otto
was able to stay on Salter’s
bumper for a couple of laps,
but Salter led Otto to the
checkers by two car lengths.
Darrell Cawley finished
third. Lance Blacker finished
fourth. Pebo Windham was
fifth.
In the Coyote Feature, Lee
Rogers led flag to flag. Rogers went from fifth to first on
the first lap to grab the lead.
Rusty Locklar challenged
Rogers all race, but Rogers
beat him to the checkers. Gordon Reese followed in third
with Dylan Wolfe fourth, and
Cameron Grissett fifth.
Greg Adams took the lead
on lap four and went on to
win the CupLite Feature. Jack
Whittle led the first three circuits before Adams took over.
Adams built a four-car length
lead during the race, but as
the laps ran down, Whittle cut
the lead.
Whittle caught Adams on
the final circuit and dove to
the inside as they exited turn
four headed to the checkers.
Whittle came up about half a
car length short as the checkers flew.
Karl Williams was third,
followed by Larry Crutchfield
and Carroll Williams.
Eddy Hinson came from
the fifth starting spot to win
the Mini Sportsman Feature.
Donnie Howell grabbed the
early lead from the pole and
led the first five laps before
Hinson took the point. Howell was second with Joshua
Sibley third. Jeremy Geddings and Dale McLendon
rounded out the top five.
South Alabama Speedway
will reopen May 7.

Worm Fiddlin’ a popular annual event at Festival on the Rivers
The question has been asked many
times over the years...how does one
fiddle for worms?
As my granny showed us many
years ago when we ran out of fish bait
while fishing it’s really quite simple.
You find a shaded damp area of
ground then find a stob/large stick
or pipe, whatever is handy, and drive
it into the ground. Then find another
similar item and rub it over the one
in the ground, making the ground vibrate. This brings the worms to the
top of the ground so you can pick
them up and use them for fish bait.
If you cannot get any worms at the
chosen spot, just move on to another
spot and try the same thing. Worm
fiddlin was once upon a time simply
called snoring for worms. If you can
do this, you eliminate having to go to
the store to purchase worms to continue your fishing trip.

Jeff Bates is the headliner at Festival on the Rivers
Jeff Bates was given up for adoption as a baby. He later met his birth
mother, though his natural father remains a complete mystery. Mississippi sharecropper Ed Bates and his
wife Barbara adopted him.
Barbara, the daughter of a Pentecostal preacher, raised the baby on
gospel songs. Eight brothers and sisters came along, and Ed and Barbara
also took in two cousins. Bates’ father became a bulldozer operator in
the Columbia, Miss. area.
By his teens, Bates was a selfdescribed “geek.” Poor and shy, he
had few friends and was constantly
picked on by bullies. When he fought
back at age 14, he was suspended
from school.
The family was so backwoods that
at the age of 17 Bates had never been
outside of Marion County, Miss.
Hungry to see the world, he joined
the National Guard. After that, he
took a job on an oil rig.
One night, a friend urged him to
get on stage at the Colonial Steak
House in Columbia, Miss. He sang
Elvis’ “Suspicious Minds,” George
a waitress at the club. That stormy
union lasted only a few years. After
the breakup, he moved to Seminary,
Miss., and became a carpenter for a
time, continuing to sing on the side.
Later on he became a welder, but
music continued to be his first love.
Wanting to pursue his music more
seriously, he moved to Little Rock,
Ark. It was there that he met and later
married his first manager and in 1993
he formed his own band, Southern
Storm. Bates blossomed quickly once
he began writing with Music City’s
tunesmiths. His wife-manager, however, told him he’d be better off back
in Arkansas so he moved back.
As his marriage began to unravel,
Bates commuted back to Nashville to

But by then Bates had gotten
caught up in using drugs. He had
even sold all of his musical equipment to fund his drug habit.
When that money ran out, he hit
rock bottom, and the police eventually found thousands of dollars worth
of stolen musical equipment at his
home. He was sent to jail.
During his time behind bars, he
decided to ask everyone for forgiveness and turn his life around. The next
day, he found out that Gene Watson
had recorded two of his songs and
that Tracy Lawrence had recorded a
song Bates wrote with Kenny Beard,
called “What a Memory.”
Bates worked pouring concrete
building foundations for houses by
day and created new music by night.
He got his songwriting contract back.
In time, some of his tapes made their
way to RCA.
On January 29, 2002, he sang in

label signed him and released his debut single “The Love Song” in 2003.
Rainbow Man arrived in later that

own band Ten Mile Drive. Joe began
working on a solo career and kept
ties to Shay, working with him on
occasional projects.
A few years passed, Shay’s band
had come to an end and after a brief
solo run, he and Joe began discussing
the idea of putting together a duo.
Watson & Nash set out to create
fe!
Sa
Be
a unique sound for themselves by
incorporating tight Everly Brothers
style harmonies with a contemporary
country production.
Influenced by duos such as Brooks
& Dunn, Montgomery Gentry and
Americana/rock artists such as Tom
Petty and John Mellencamp, Watson & Nash set forth writing and recording their freshman project, Mile
Markers.
Notable songs from the album
include, ‘Bring It On’, which was
picked up by Fox Sports for usage
and Tough People Do, a song that
sets an encouraging tone for the
overall album ‘feel’.
After a couple years touring the
country and performing, the duo are
back in the studio, writing and recording songs for their anticipated
2011 release.

River Festival 2011, 11
Shane Owens is featured at Festival on the Rivers
Samson’s Shane Owens is one of
the area’s most popular performers
and returns once again to the 36th annual Festival on the Rivers.
At the age of five, Shane Owens’
parents gave him
a set of drums, and
at age six he started singing in the
church choir. The
choir had members of all ages,
but the youngsters
powerful
voice
drew most of the
attention, especially on his fa- Shane Owens
vorite hymns, like
I’ll Fly Away.
While Owens was still quite young,
his father, who was also a singer, and
his mother separated. Owens and his
older twin sister, who were born exactly one minute apart, stayed with
his mother, who never missed the Saturday night broadcast of The Grand
Ole Opry out of Nashville.
Country music was always play-
ing in the Owens household. Artists
like Don Williams, Keith Whitley
and Ricky Skaggs were often heard,
while George Jones and Vern Gosdin became particularly influential in
Owens’ work.
During high school, sports and
other school activities took up most
of his time, but after graduation in
1990, Owens found a guitar teacher,
the highly acclaimed Shelly Commander, and put his focus back on
music. Commander immediately recognized Owens’ talent and put him to
work playing in Commander’s band
on the weekends.
The band line-up changed three
of four times, but Owens always remained a member.
He won the Jimmy Dean Country Showdown State Competition in
Alabama two years in a row in 1995
and 1996 and made it as far as the national semi-finals. He first went out
on his own in 1996, when he and his
backup band played the Civic Center
in Ozark, Alabama with Conferderate
Railroad.

Not long after, Owens married. He
and Lisa are now the proud parents
of two boys, ages five and ten and he
still calls Alabama his home.
Owens never stopped performing. He has shared the stage with
many of Country’s top artists, including Hank Williams Jr., Lori Morgan,
George Jones, Merle Haggard, Kenny
Chesney, Pam Tillis, Ronnie Milsap,
Billy Dean, Keith Urban, Exile and
dozens of others, while touring all
over the South.
The tracks on Owens’ Rust Records
CD are the best he has done thus far.
He wrote seven of the 13 tunes himself, while the remaining tracks were
written by his various music industry
friends.
Shane Owens shows his strong
community spirit by performing at
events like the opening of the new
Health Department in March.
