erable time, and provides the insurance company with accurate documentation. The machine
communicates with its computer via Bluetooth.
The car sits on a Celette bench that is very precise. Vehicles that are out of spec are brought to
factory tolerances on the bench, using various
jigs that attach to the bench. Another advantage
of the bench is that it can be moved to another
part of the shop, such as the paint shop, and still
retain the accuracy of the setup. All German cars
use this system, as well as some Japanese cars.
High-end American cars will be next to benefit
from this excellent system. Both the measuring
tool and the laser guided jig offer printouts, benefiting the operator, as well as providing documentation for the insurance company.

We moved to the Paint Protection department,
where there was a demonstration of the Clear
Bra. Gilbert mentioned that there is a new product on the market that is far superior to the previously used material. He discussed vehicle
wraps, which come in a variety of material that
can dramatically change the appearance of your
car, such as carbon fiber and stainless steel.

GILSON TECH SESSION
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
By Bob McLaughlin
By Craig Kugler, President, Sierra Nevada Region
Member Gilbert Dayao always puts on impressive
Tech Sessions for the Sierra Nevada Region and
Saturday, June 2, was no exception. Gilbert and
his team of specialists took us through all aspects
of the business before feeding us a great lunch.
As background, Gilbert purchases the latest
equipment that ensures quality and efficiency for
his shop, along with ultimate customer satisfaction. He also invests in employee training to ensure that his techs can properly operate that
equipment. The equipment and the training were
on full display for this tech session.
ting the car up in a sweet spot. That means tuning for optimum performance. That way the car
performs best in Reno, but will work effectively at
Tahoe and the Bay Area. Transmission modules
are tuned to match engine enhancements. Shifting is programmed to work most effectively on
the long grades to Tahoe and when torque is
applied during spirited driving.
The body and frame shop gave us an opportunity to actually use the latest and greatest welding machine. The technology involved in this machine is simply amazing. The computer in the
welder stores data about every car: the type of
metals used, thickness of the metal and where
welds are placed. The machine is fully automatic, meaning that the operator touches the
welder to the metal, and the computer senses
the kind of metal, the thickness, and then applies
the correct settings to make the weld factory perfect. Lead Tech James Crosthwaite led the discussion and then let SNR members actually do
the welding (hold the welder and the machine did
the welding). James is going to Germany to be
internationally certified on welding aluminum.
We first visited the Performance Shop, where
Kim Messer, Service Manager, spoke about the
many levels of modification and tuning as well as
general maintenance work for all cars that can
be done there. Kim explained that modifying and
tuning is not a bolt-on operation. Evaluation and
testing is done to ensure that the changes make
a positive difference for the customer. Modifying
also includes chassis tuning. The goal is to have
engine modifications work effectively with the
chassis and transmission. Kim talked about set-
After trying our welding skills, the group moved
to the Collision Repair Facility, where Preston
Rassmussen led a discussion on the Celette
measuring machine. The Celette operation is in
two parts: the NAJA measuring tool, and the Celette bench using the SVENNE system. Preston
explained that the NAJA tool has the capability to
very accurately measure the dimensions of the
car they are working on. That way the tech can
immediately tell what part of the car is out of
alignment. This quickly provides the tech with
exact information about where the car varies
from manufacturer specifications, saves consid-

We’re starting the second half of
2012 with a bang! Porsche Parade
is upon us and we have a nice contingent going. Hopefully the recent
near-100-degree weather will
abate for a few days while we’re
there. No matter the weather, it’s
sure to be a great time. Zone 7 will have more
than 70 cars going from what I hear (that’s 10%
of the registered total). With 15 cars Sierra
Nevada is a very big part of that total. Nice!
The club had three events in June and all were
well attended. The Gilson Tech session, even
with limited advance notice, had 25 members
attend. Gilbert as always was the perfect host
and we all learned something new (think
“welding”). The Mystery Wine Tour hosted by
John and Alice Strom had 26 members and a
wait list. The small wineries we visited were delightful but truly limited the number that could join
us as in two places we barely had enough room
for the cars in our group. Great job, John and
Alice, especially on the joint dinner with Shasta
Region. Combined we had 45 PCA members in
attendance! What Porsche camaraderie!
If you’re registered and are looking for someone
to travel with, contact Curtis Fong who’s leading
the Tour of Nevada and Parade Caravan which
is leaving Saturday, July 7th. Check out the details on page 10 or on the snr-pca.org website.
I understand we have seven cars signed up for
this caravan but more are welcome.
The biggest tour of the year was our Big Springs
Gardens Drive & Dine hosted by Merlin and Ann
Simons. Forty-eight members and more than 20
cars went on an excursion through several high
Sierra passes in June. That almost always
means unsettled weather but our group persevered and had a great day. Unfortunately I didn’t
make this event (Autocross conflict) but my
thanks to Merlin and Ann for their leadership on
this great event.
For the patriotic types or those who just want to enjoy an old-fashioned holiday picnic with great atmosphere and fantastic music, the Pops in the Park
event on July 4th is a great way to spend the day.
After Parade, the next club events roll into
August with a Drivers Ed weekend at Thunderhill
and the Cayenne Four Wheelin’ adventure.
These are different (different is good!!) and fun
events and I hope you take advantage of them.
New friends to meet; old friends to savor;
Porsches to drive. See you at our next event.
Until then, be safe!

eration and Bob does a nice job of bringing us upto-date on Gilbert’s latest and greatest (including
the “magic” welder).
While it was breezy and sunny in the Reno area,
some adverse weather hit our well-subscribed
tour in the mountains causing tops to go up and
wipers to come on. “All’s well that ends well” as
they say and it sounds like everyone had a great
time despite some unsettled conditions.
The Mystery Wine Tour was “magical” (no pun
intended) and Alice Strom reports on a wonderful
weekend event. We were definitely surprised
when the “mystery” location was revealed as we
had never heard of Manton. As always, the drive
was wonderful and Porsche camaraderie was
evident, especially at the joint dinner with some
Shasta Region members Saturday night.
We’re also looking forward to some great
Porsche Parade articles for the August edition.
So, Parade goers, take good notes and let us
know about your experiences.
More fun to come … and keep those articles
coming! For now, sit back, relax and enjoy this
edition of The Circular

kind of a day it was really going to be. After getting about halfway up the grade to Donner Pass
we found out: It started to rain hard. By this time
the other two groups had caught up and, upon
pulling into the rest area, John and Alice were
very busy putting the lid on the Cab.
With some trepidation we continued on, crossed
over onto historic route 40 at Soda Springs and
headed back toward Truckee. Back on Highway
89 we headed for Sierraville and then on to Highway 49, where at last we had the opportunity to
open things up a bit. That is until about 8 miles
from Bassetts where the road was in the process
of being resurfaced. Although the signs said
loose gravel, fortunately, there was very little on
the road and there was no traffic going the other
way to throw gravel onto our cars.

gardens. (Photo by R Chew)
We had 48 members and guests and 25 cars
with us, which is a great turnout for a club event.
We drove on a variety of roads and certainly under varied weather conditions, but I believe that
made for an even more interesting day. After we
returned home, Ann and I were both very content
as we reflected on the day. We hope that all who
participated felt the same way. Thank you to all
who joined us. That makes whatever effort it
takes to make the arrangements worthwhile.
By the time we got to Big Springs Gardens the
sun had once again made its appearance. It was
still cool and the wind was brisk (to say the
least), lowering the temperature by at least 10
degrees. Still there were no complaints …
although some members were standing out of
the tree cover attempting to get some warmth
from the sun. Besides the beautiful gardens with
their magnificent flowers, we all had a chance to
enjoy the fantastic buffet. There were definitely
no member complaints on that front either.

BIG SPRINGS GARDENS
MYSTERY WINE TOUR
By Merlin Simons
By Alice Strom
McDonald’s on the Mt. Rose Highway was the
gathering place for Porsche enthusiasts on June
23. The destination on this day was Big Springs
Gardens, located in the heart of the Tahoe National Forest on CA Highway 49 just west of Bassetts, CA. The weather was cool with broken
cloud cover but the sun was shining through as
we had some enthusiastic conversations going
about the weather. John and Alice Strom, with
demonstrated optimism, were taking the top
down on their Cab. Due to the large number of
cars, we broke the tour up into three groups with
John Strom and Harry Dell being kind enough to
lead two of the groups.
The “mystery” was revealed Saturday, June 9,
as 26 club members gathered at 8 AM at the
Lemmon Valley McDonalds north of Reno. We
were headed to Manton Valley, Calif., to taste
the wines of four newly discovered boutique wineries — newly discovered by John and Alice
Strom, tour hosts. The three-hour drive was
through some of the most spectacular scenery
Northern California has to offer. Beautiful blue
skies, lush green pine trees and snow-capped
Sierra mountains, topped off by both Lassen and
Shasta in their finest majesty.

O’Larey are happy to be in the sun. (Photo by R Chew)
Traffic was relatively heavy on the drive over Mt.
Rose summit so there was little opportunity for
any enthusiastic driving. The large black cloud
that appeared was ominous and a predictor of
what was to come later. However, by the time we
turned onto Tahoe Blvd in Incline Village and
started around the north end of the lake, the sun
was reflecting brightly off the white caps on Lake
Tahoe. At King’s Beach we turned north to head
toward Truckee. It was during this segment of
the drive that the sky became completely overcast and there was some concern as to what

Delgado at Ringtail Winery. (Photo by A Strom)
After a rest stop at the Starbucks/McDonalds in
Susanville we drove west on Highway 36
through the mountains and past Lake Almanor,
sparkling blue in the morning sun. We arrived at
Ringtail Winery for a tasty picnic lunch accompanied by (for many of us) an intriguing Chardonnay Viognier blend. The picnic tables under
shady trees were cool and inviting. Owner
Donna Delgado poured several wines for us to
taste. Their Petit Sirah and Sweet Petit are
medal winners and definitely tempted us. Our
next stop, Shasta Daisy, is located at the top of
the valley with fabulous meadow views and featured a host of hummingbirds dancing at the
feeders right off the tasting bar’s back porch. We
were welcomed by owners Carroll and Lorna
Knedler. Known for their Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc as well as warm welcomes, Shasta
Daisy has, in addition to tasting, a craft filled
shop and a relaxing deck which many members
too advantage during our stay.
After some group photos we headed down the
valley to our next winery, Cedar Crest — the
newest in the valley and owned by Jim and
Corey Livingston, our servers. Their tasting
room/boutique shop was the most modern in the
valley and featured a beautiful wraparound deck
overlooking an exquisite water feature. We appreciated their wines and their ribaldly named
BBQ rubs. Last but not least was the Indian
Peak Vineyard, which featured an outstanding
Cabernet among other favorites. Owners Fred
and Donna Boots made us feel welcome as they
served up their wines and offered homemade
Mexican food snacks. The fresh make-it-yourself

NCRC Drivers Ed Weekend
Northern California Racing Club (NCRC) will be
holding a track day event at Thunderhill in Willows, CA and we have as many “school” spots as
we need. Track-rats can sign up for the more independent sessions. This is a two-event weekend: a drive tour on Friday, August 10th, through
the back roads to get to Williams and then the
track event on Saturday, August 11th. The Drivers Ed event (school) includes five 20-minute sessions plus classroom sessions all for $129
(covered Paddock parking is $5 extra). This is a
great opportunity especially for first timers to get
some high quality instruction.
Cayenne Four Wheelin’
Cayenne owners, are you ready to get some dust,
maybe a little mud and a couple of Nevada pinstripes on your beautiful boulevard babies? Saturday, August 25th, is the day for you! We’ll meet
at the Carson Mall in Carson City (former
Gottschalks lot) at 10 AM. In the tradition of a typical 4X4 run, bring a cooler with your favorite beverage and a picnic lunch to eat on the trail, tailgate style. We will be four-wheeling on some very
easy, but very scenic dirt roads. No special offroad driving skills required and your trusty steeds
will not be subjected to anything approaching their
maximum abilities. Other activities are also
planned (special walking tour and a Basque dinner). Non-Porsche 4X4 are welcome! Contact Ned
Bacon for more information: 775.783.0979.

BIG SPRINGS GARDENS
MYSTERY WINE TOUR
By Merlin Simons
By Alice Strom
McDonald’s on the Mt. Rose Highway was the
gathering place for Porsche enthusiasts on June
23. The destination on this day was Big Springs
Gardens, located in the heart of the Tahoe National Forest on CA Highway 49 just west of Bassetts, CA. The weather was cool with broken
cloud cover but the sun was shining through as
we had some enthusiastic conversations going
about the weather. John and Alice Strom, with
demonstrated optimism, were taking the top
down on their Cab. Due to the large number of
cars, we broke the tour up into three groups with
John Strom and Harry Dell being kind enough to
lead two of the groups.
The “mystery” was revealed Saturday, June 9,
as 26 club members gathered at 8 AM at the
Lemmon Valley McDonalds north of Reno. We
were headed to Manton Valley, Calif., to taste
the wines of four newly discovered boutique wineries — newly discovered by John and Alice
Strom, tour hosts. The three-hour drive was
through some of the most spectacular scenery
Northern California has to offer. Beautiful blue
skies, lush green pine trees and snow-capped
Sierra mountains, topped off by both Lassen and
Shasta in their finest majesty.

The fresh make-it-yourself

eration and Bob does a nice job of bringing us upto-date on Gilbert’s latest and greatest (including
the “magic” welder).

Vic & Karen Shannon and Harry Dell out for a stroll in the

GILSON TECH SESSION
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
By Bob McLaughlin
By Craig Kugler, President, Sierra Nevada Region
Member Gilbert Dayao always puts on impressive
Tech Sessions for the Sierra Nevada Region and
Saturday, June 2, was no exception. Gilbert and
his team of specialists took us through all aspects
of the business before feeding us a great lunch.
As background, Gilbert purchases the latest
equipment that ensures quality and efficiency for
his shop, along with ultimate customer satisfaction. He also invests in employee training to ensure that his techs can properly operate that
equipment. The equipment and the training were
on full display for this tech session.
ting the car up in a sweet spot. That means tuning for optimum performance. That way the car
performs best in Reno, but will work effectively at
Tahoe and the Bay Area. Transmission modules
are tuned to match engine enhancements. Shifting is programmed to work most effectively on
the long grades to Tahoe and when torque is
applied during spirited driving.
The body and frame shop gave us an opportunity to actually use the latest and greatest welding machine. The technology involved in this machine is simply amazing. The computer in the
welder stores data about every car: the type of
metals used, thickness of the metal and where
welds are placed. The machine is fully automatic, meaning that the operator touches the
welder to the metal, and the computer senses
the kind of metal, the thickness, and then applies
the correct settings to make the weld factory perfect. Lead Tech James Crosthwaite led the discussion and then let SNR members actually do
the welding (hold the welder and the machine did
the welding). James is going to Germany to be
internationally certified on welding aluminum.
We first visited the Performance Shop, where
Kim Messer, Service Manager, spoke about the
many levels of modification and tuning as well as
general maintenance work for all cars that can
be done there. Kim explained that modifying and
tuning is not a bolt-on operation. Evaluation and
testing is done to ensure that the changes make
a positive difference for the customer. Modifying
also includes chassis tuning. The goal is to have
engine modifications work effectively with the
chassis and transmission. Kim talked about set-
After trying our welding skills, the group moved
to the Collision Repair Facility, where Preston
Rassmussen led a discussion on the Celette
measuring machine. The Celette operation is in
two parts: the NAJA measuring tool, and the Celette bench using the SVENNE system. Preston
explained that the NAJA tool has the capability to
very accurately measure the dimensions of the
car they are working on. That way the tech can
immediately tell what part of the car is out of
alignment. This quickly provides the tech with
exact information about where the car varies
from manufacturer specifications, saves consid-

We’re starting the second half of
2012 with a bang! Porsche Parade
is upon us and we have a nice contingent going. Hopefully the recent
near-100-degree weather will
abate for a few days while we’re
there. No matter the weather, it’s
sure to be a great time. Zone 7 will have more
than 70 cars going from what I hear (that’s 10%
of the registered total). With 15 cars Sierra
Nevada is a very big part of that total. Nice!
The club had three events in June and all were
well attended. The Gilson Tech session, even
with limited advance notice, had 25 members
attend. Gilbert as always was the perfect host
and we all learned something new (think
“welding”). The Mystery Wine Tour hosted by
John and Alice Strom had 26 members and a
wait list. The small wineries we visited were delightful but truly limited the number that could join
us as in two places we barely had enough room
for the cars in our group. Great job, John and
Alice, especially on the joint dinner with Shasta
Region. Combined we had 45 PCA members in
attendance! What Porsche camaraderie!
If you’re registered and are looking for someone
to travel with, contact Curtis Fong who’s leading
the Tour of Nevada and Parade Caravan which
is leaving Saturday, July 7th. Check out the details on page 10 or on the snr-pca.org website.
I understand we have seven cars signed up for
this caravan but more are welcome.
The biggest tour of the year was our Big Springs
Gardens Drive & Dine hosted by Merlin and Ann
Simons. Forty-eight members and more than 20
cars went on an excursion through several high
Sierra passes in June. That almost always
means unsettled weather but our group persevered and had a great day. Unfortunately I didn’t
make this event (Autocross conflict) but my
thanks to Merlin and Ann for their leadership on
this great event.
For the patriotic types or those who just want to enjoy an old-fashioned holiday picnic with great atmosphere and fantastic music, the Pops in the Park
event on July 4th is a great way to spend the day.
After Parade, the next club events roll into
August with a Drivers Ed weekend at Thunderhill
and the Cayenne Four Wheelin’ adventure.
These are different (different is good!!) and fun
events and I hope you take advantage of them.
New friends to meet; old friends to savor;
Porsches to drive. See you at our next event.
Until then, be safe!

erable time, and provides the insurance company with accurate documentation. The machine
communicates with its computer via Bluetooth.

We moved to the Paint Protection department,

wraps, which come in a variety of material that
can dramatically change the appearance of your
car, such as carbon fiber and stainless steel.
