Josh Sandin - Head Coach
Fifth Year
Josh Sandin enters his fi h year as a head coach. In four years under Sandin, Iowa Central has amassed a 154-65 overall record and a 65-39 conference record. The Tritons topped the 40-win mark for the third me in four
seasons under Sandin in 2014. Iowa Central has also been a constant in the
NJCAA polls in that me, peaking at No. 3 in 2012.
Since 2011, Iowa Central has had 11 All-American selec ons, 41 All-Region XI selec ons, 57 Academic All-Region XI selec ons, eleven Academic
All-Americans and the team has been named an Academic Team of the
Year by the NJCAA four mes. Iowa Central also set team records in ba ng
average (.375) in 2011 and home runs (59) in 2014.
Sandin recorded his 100th win to begin the 2013 season with a 12-0 win over North Arkansas. He needed
only 126 games to record his 100th victory.
“We have very high expecta ons for our program, both on the field and off,” said Sandin. “Our goal every
year is to make it to the Na onal Tournament and win it and also be an academic team of the year.”
Sandin is in his eighth year with the so ball program as he was an assistant for three seasons before
taking over as head coach in 2010 when Rick Sandquist (259-57
overall record) resigned to become the athle c director at Iowa
Central.
Sandin served as an assistant coach for three seasons and handled the catchers, ou ielders and hi ers. Sandin also served as
the recrui ng coordinator for so ball program. The Iowa Central
alum was a member of the Triton baseball team when he was a
student. He was a part of Sandquist’s final season as a baseball
coach and finished fourth at the NJCAA II World Series in 2002.
Sandin was also a part of the 2003 squad that was Na onal
Runners-up under current baseball coach Rick Pederson.
“Iowa Central has always been a very special place to me ever
since I was a student here,” said Sandin. “To get the chance to
come back and be a part of such a great athle c tradi on is a
dream for me.”
“We are going to con nue to recruit girls who have a passion
and love for the game and want to work to become the best
they can be,” said Sandin. “All of the success that we have had
has been because our girls have bought in and worked hard.”
In addi on to coaching Sandin works as an academic advisor
and contributes content for Iowa Central’s athle c web site.
Sandin lives in Fort Dodge with his wife Chelsea, a special educa on teacher at Webster City HS, and their son Jackston (2).

Coaching Staff
Corinne Frei - Pitching Coach
First Year
Former Iowa Central so ball player Corinne Frei will return to the dugout this season as Iowa Central’s newest pitching coach.
“I am so excited to have Corinne back with the program,” said head coach Josh
Sandin. “She had an excellent career here and I think she will be a great mentor for
our players, especially our pitchers.”
Frei led the Triton pitching staff in 2011 and 2012, helping Iowa Central to a 99-24
overall record in that me. Frei posted a career record of 46-8 with a 1.86 earned
run average. Her 46 wins are ed for the most in a career and she also set a career
record with 51 complete games.
Frei had two excellent seasons at Iowa Central, but was dominant in her sophomore campaign. In 2012 she
set a single-season record for strikeouts with 204 and posted the second most wins (24), complete games
(23), shut outs (7), and earned run average (1.27). Frei was the program’s first Region XI Pitcher of the Year
and was named First Team All-America by the Na onal Fastpitch Coaches Associa on and Second Team AllAmerica by the NJCAA.
“I am so excited to be back at Iowa Central, I had such a great experience as a player here and I can’t wait to
start as a coach,” said Frei. “Iowa Central is like family to me and I am so happy to be back.”
Frei returns to Iowa Central a er two seasons at William Jewell, an NCAA Division II program in Liberty, Mo.
She graduated this spring with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. In addi on to so ball, Frei will work in the
housing department at Iowa Central.
Paul Hunt- Volunteer Assistant
First Year
Paul Hunt joins the Iowa Central so ball program for his first season as an assistant coach. Hunt is no stranger to Fort Dodge so ball as he has been the head
coach at Fort Dodge St. Edmond for the last three seasons.
“Paul has been a great addi on to our program,” said head coach Josh Sandin. “He
asked if he could come to prac ce a couple of mes and he hasn’t le ! He loves the
game and loves coaching and we are happy he is helping out.”
Under Hunt, St. Edmond has made one trip to the Iowa Girls High School Athle c
Union’s 2A State So ball Tournament along with two Regional Finals. In 2013, the
Gaels places sixth overall. They have been a constant force in the state rankings as well, peaking at No. 3 in
2014. Hunt also led the Gaels to a North Central Conference tle in 2014.
Hunt will work with Iowa Central’s ou ielders and catchers in addi on to hi ers. Hunt’s baseball playing
career took him to Dana College and Presenta on College, where he was a three year starter at catcher.

Trtions Eye Postseason Return
The Iowa Central so ball team enters 2015 with the same high expecta ons it always has – a trip to
the NJCAA II Na onal Tournament in Clinton, Miss. This season, hopes are higher than ever with five
returning All-Region XI performers and two bids to the big dance open for the ICCAC. Iowa Central also
opens the season at No. 12 in the preseason poll.
“No doubt we are excited about this year,” said head coach Josh Sandin. “We have some very good
returners at some key posi ons and two teams from our region get to advance. That’s a huge show of
respect for our region, but there are no guarantees. A very good team is s ll going to get le out.”
For the first me ever, Region XI – which is comprised of the ICCAC schools – will send two teams to
the District Championship Round. A er conference play, the top two teams will host mini-regionals with
the winner each advancing to a best-of-three district championship for a trip to Clinton.
“It’s going to be a great thing for our conference,” said Sandin. “We have the best region in the NJCAA.
In the last eight years, the No. 1 seed has only advanced out twice, which shows how deep we are. To
get two bids is awesome, but we s ll need to perform.”
Iowa Central won the Region XI tournament in 2009 as the No. 3 seed and has finished second in the
tournament four mes since 2006.
“It’s a long season and we can’t clinch the bid on February 12. We have to take it one game at a me
and get be er every day un l the tournament starts,” said Sandin.
That build towards the postseason begins Feb. 12 when Iowa Central opens its season in the Irish
Dome in Rosemount, Minn., against Mount Mercy JV at 8:00 a.m.
INFIELD
Iowa Central’s deepest posi on by far will look very similar to last year’s set up. Sophomores Emilee
Dorpinghaus and Taylor Barne return in the middle infield. Dorpinghaus started 54 games at second
base last season and hit .370 with 11 doubles, five home runs and 28 stolen bases. Barne started 52
games at shortstop and hit .359 with 13 doubles and 21 stolen bases. Sandin expects both of the Second Team All-Region XI performers to be at the top of the lineup.
The third member of the sophomore returners is Casey May Huff. Huff, who started 44 games at third
base and designated player last season, will return to third base with plenty of ac on at first base as
well as pitcher. Huff was an Honorable Men on All-Region XI performer last season as she hit six home
runs and had 28 RBI last season. She will be in the middle of the lineup this season.
Sophomore Alexis Hernandez returns a er a redshirt season last year and will move from catcher to
first base.
Five freshmen are also in the mix on the infield. Cali Koeneke, Bailey Hankins, Ashley Jochum, Jess
Kuebler and Kennedy Vincha le will see playing me as well.
“It’s nice to have some experience back on the infield,” said Sandin. “The sophomores have con nued
to improve and the freshmen are pushing as well.”
PITCHING
Iowa Central’s second deepest posi on is in the circle. Sophomores Allie Ingalls, Carmen Rivera and
Bailey Barne return a er combining for a 34-12 record and 310 innings pitched in 2014. Ingalls heads
the rota on as the First Team All-Region XI performer went 22-9 last season with a 3.79 ERA. She was
12-2 in ICCAC play as well. Rivera was thrust into ac on last season and responded with a 9-3 record
and a 5.64 ERA, garnering Second Team All-Region XI honors. Barne also returns a er a 3-0
freshman campaign.
“It’s a lot more comfor ng when you have so much experience back on the infield and in the circle,”
said Sandin. “I feel like this may be the most complete pitching staff we’ve had top to bo om
TRITON SOFTBALL 2K15
since I’ve been here.”
Joining the three returners are Huff and freshman Lexi Korte. Huff, who pitched in high school but did
not last season due to an injury, and Korte will see lots of innings this season a er strong fall campaigns.
“I am comfortable with all five kids. It is going to give us a lot of flexibility and the chance to try some
things out,” said Sandin. “All five will see significant innings this year.”
OUTFIELD
Iowa Central returns two full me ou ielders, Lexie Miller and Josie Heesch, in addi on to Ingalls and
Bailey Barne . However, a er star ng three sophomores in the ou ield last year the ba le has been
wide open this fall. Ingalls saw the most ac on in the ou ield and ba ed .342 with seven doubles and
14 stolen bases. Miller and Heesch saw limited innings last year. Miller hit .364 in 22 at bats but stole 25
bases as a pinch runner. Heesch appeared in 27 games and hit .261.
Joining the fight for playing me will be freshmen Sami Koontz, Reilli Dhabalt, Abby Dobernecker and
Vanessa Banderas, with Korte and Carmen Rivera in the mix as well.
“The ou ield was a constant shuffle this fall,” said Sandin. “We have a lot of kids who can do well, but
it’s going to come down to who performs the best early in the season.”
CATCHER
Four freshmen are in the mix behind the dish for the Tritons. Brooke Mallon, Jamie Haden, Jus ce Rondeau and Kuebler have had their development sped along with the absence of any sophomore catchers.
“This is our youngest posi on by far, but these four have done a good job ge ng up to speed,” said
Sandin. “But these four are more than capable of stepping in and doing very well.”
SCHEDULE
For the second year in a row, Iowa Central will open the season inside as the host of the Iowa Central
Indoor Classic inside the Irish Dome in Rosemount. Iowa Central will play 12 games in the month of February – a record for the program – and 16 indoor games before heading south for its spring trip.
“Spreading the season out was a huge help to us last season,” said Sandin. “To know for sure we are
going to play, and play early, is awesome. Now we don’t have to cram 30 dates in to two months like we
have in the past.”
Iowa Central hosts indoor dates in the Irish Dome in Feb. 12, 13, 19, 20, and March 5, 6. The Tritons
will also play in the Rochester Early Bird Classic on Feb. 27 and Dakota County’s indoor tournament on
March 27-28 for a whopping 20 indoor games.
The Tritons will also migrate south for spring break as it heads to Cocoa Beach, Fla., for the second year
in a row. Iowa Central kicks off a 14-game trip on March 12 against Parkland.
“These first 30 games are huge for us,” said Sandin. “We should get them all in without weather concerns which is a huge mental relief. To get that many games in before conference should give us a great
idea of exactly who we are.”
Iowa Central will receive an immediate test in ICCAC play as it opens on the road at Kirkwood on
Sunday, March 22. The first date won’t be the only test for Iowa Central it is one of three ICCAC teams
ranked in the top 12 of the NCJAA Preseason Poll. DMACC debuted at No. 7 and Kirkwood was No. 9.
Iowa Central’s home opener will be March 25 against NIACC at the newly remodeled Harlan and Hazel
Rogers Complex.
The regular season wraps up on April 19 when Iowa Central hosts Southwestern. The Region XI Tournaments begin on Friday, April 24, with the top two seeds hos ng. The winners will advance to the District
Tournament round on May 1 and the NJCAA II Na onal Tournament will be May 13-16.

The Triton Way
At Iowa Central we feel that we offer a very unique program that does things the right way. We believe that
playing so ball at Iowa Central should be a special and posi ve experience that will remain with you for the
rest of your life.
On offense we are going to be overly aggressive. We want teams to hate to play against us, not because we
are a cheap or dirty team, but because we take extra bases, steal bases, make the right play and cause frustraon to our opponents. By being aggressive, we accomplish our goal. We strive not to be a one-dimensional
offensive team. We will use speed to set up the rest of our offense. We expect our ba ers to work the count,
understand and recognize all offensive situa ons and above all, swing HARD! There are mes when we need a
home run, a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt or even a ground ball to the right side to complete our offensive goal.
We expect each of our players to be able to complete these tasks when called upon.
We as coaches do not believe in calling every pitch, dicta ng every situa on or making every single call. We
want our teams to have an understanding and knowledge of the game that allows them to react during the
game. If you feel a drag bunt may be the best op on, drop it down. If you think you can take an extra base on
a hit to the ou ield, take it. We want to have nine girls on the field all thinking inside the game and reac ng to
every situa on on the field without us forcing them to do so.
Finally, the game of so ball is just that… a game. Games should be fun. We do not hold five-hour prac ces.
Our prac ce mes range from two to two-and-a-half hours. We do not stand around; we are always doing
something to get be er. We explain the reasoning behind why we do the things we do. We teach them because we want all of our girls to understand the nuances of so ball.
We truly believe that a coach has the power to create the passion of playing and also take that passion away.
We think we create. We want an en re team pulling and roo ng for each other. We want a dugout full of players and coaches with a refuse-to-lose a tude, willing to fight the other team for every strike, out and inning
un l the game is over.
