PolArt is the largest festival of its kind outside of Poland, and is a fantastic celebration of Polish culture and heritage. It’s a privilege to have Melbourne chosen to host the Festival, which is held once every three years. Victoria’s Polish community forms part of our strong multiculturalism, and events such as these make our state a better place to live and visit. I would like to thank the organisers for their dedication and hard work, which has made this Festival possible. I encourage everyone to come along to PolArt 2015, and experience Polish dance, music, theatre, film, visual arts and literature. The Hon. Daniel Andrews MP PREMIER OF VICTORIA 3 For 40 years, PolArt festivals have been celebrating Polish culture and heritage through dance, music, theatre, film, visual arts and literature. Held every three years in a capital city around Australia, PolArt is the pre-eminent national Polish Arts Festival and is the largest of its kind outside of Poland. The festival serves as a springboard to unite Polish and Australian communities across Australia with first, second and now third generation Polish youth, being the main participants of the festival. In this way, the festival has helped promote and contribute to the multi-ethnic character of Australia and in 2015 from 27 December to 3 January, it is Melbourne’s turn to play host. For 40 years, PolArt festivals have been celebrating and showcasing Polish culture and heritage through dance, song, theatre, film, visual arts, literature and community events. Melbourne, the cultural melting pot, is the perfect backdrop for the Polish Australian community’s largest national event. PolArt attracts participants and audience from around Australia, New Zealand and Poland. Its uniqueness brings together the entire Polish community across Australia. This, along with the extraordinary range of artistic events presented, and its ability to unify and appeal across generations, is what makes PolArt a truly remarkable festival and a must see event. I am proud to be associated with an event that promotes the arts, engages the community and builds lasting goodwill and friendships across the country. I invite you to join us for a distinctive cultural experience that is all about love, blood and passion. Jan Szuba PRESIDENT, POLART 2015 MELBOURNE INC 4 www.polart2015.com.au I am absolutely delighted to be a Festival Ambassador of PolArt 2015 which will be hosted by the beautiful city of Melbourne. Being the biggest and the most vibrant celebration of Polishness in the Southern Hemisphere, PolArt is a special event for all Poles living in Australia. It brings the youngest and oldest migrants together from across Australia to celebrate Polish arts, tradition and heritage. I am particularly pleased that the cultural program of PolArt will also feature internationally acclaimed artists from Poland. If you would like to spend great time with your family and friends please feel invited to this outstanding event! Pawel Milewski AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND AMBASSADOR, POLART 2015 It is amazing to think that this December, Melbourne will host one of the largest Polish cultural events outside Poland. I am pleased that I can take part as Ambassador. It is not very easy to forget about my Polish heritage, when each day my last name is a constant reminder. It has been an interesting journey discovering more and more about the culture and history that has had an impact on my life. I was given an amazing opportunity through the making of “Who do you think you are?” and more recently my book “Reckoning” to learn about how my history influenced who I am. No matter how much Polish blood you have inside you, it is something to be very proud of and I know PolArt 2015 Melbourne will give you the opportunity to get in touch with some of your and my cultural heritage. For those of you who are not of Polish origin, I invite you to take part because you know if it is Polish, you are in for a bloody good time. Magda Szubanski Powitanie! In 1904, Polish pianist and composer, Ignacy Jan Paderewski took to the Melbourne Town Hall stage, for his first piano recital in Australia. Now, 111 years later, excerpts of this original piece will be mirrored for the first time on the same stage by highly acclaimed and talented pianists, including Konrad Olszewski, Rafael Luszczewski and Alan Kogosowski. The Paderewski Concerto is exquisitely unique, but has rarely been recorded or mastered. This event, at the prestigious Melbourne Town Hall, will be a recording of Paderewski’s works for the first time in Australia. Anna Miernik, a soloist and chamber musician, who is an outstanding Polish artist, will debut with a premiere piece of work, The Rondo a la Krakowiak, never before heard with a symphony orchestra in Australia. The concert will also feature the works of Melbourne based composer Harry Sdraulig, which will be showcased and performed by the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra and expertly conducted by Mark Sheill. Sdraulig, of Polish descent, is a solo chamber and orchestral music composer. The Paderewski Concert promises to be a unique event — featuring rarely played, complicated and intense pieces of classical music that have never before been heard in Australia. She has sold one million records in Poland alone and has won every prominent Polish music award possible. Her musical endeavors include collaborations with outstanding local and international artists including Pat Metheny, Bobby McFerrin, Ivan Lins, Youssou N’Dour, Makoto Ozone and Richard Bona. The Andrzej Jagodzinski Trio – Andrzej Jagodzinski, Adam Cegielski and Czesław Bartkowski – has won acclaim all over the world and is now celebrating 20 years of their music-making. Slavic touch from the heart of Europe AMJ admits it was traditional Polish music (her parents were part of a legendary Polish folk ensemble) combined with her “classical upbringing” (as a pianist she graduated from F.Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw) that has left the biggest imprint on her musical consciousness. Inspired by the works of Chopin, Moniuszko, Szymanowski and even of renaissance Wenceslas from Szamotuły, AMJ collides modal nostalgia with feisty Polish dance rhythms — triggering jazz improvisation and giving listeners a chance of discovering universal space of eclectic sound, beyond time and borders. One of Poland’s leading jazz pianists interprets the music of the country’s greatest composer ... The first Andrzej Jagodzinski album of jazzed-up Chopin, recorded in 1993, was showered with awards. Their latest, original recording came to life to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary performance. “Andrzej Jagodzinski – Piano Concerto in G Minor” - a composition for a jazz trio and a symphony orchestra was recorded with the renowned Warsaw Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Wojciech Zielinski. “If Chopin really was a composer for the right hand only, as Wagner grouchily complained, then perhaps Andrzej Jagodzinski has provided a missing accompaniment ...” Brian Morton – Jazz on CD TUE, 29 DEC 2015 • 8:00PM Ruby’s Music Room • $60 WED, 30 DEC 2015 • 8:00PM Ruby’s Music Room • $45 FRI, 1 JAN 2016 • 7:00PM Fairfax Studio • $45* See inside front cover for booking details FRI, 1 JAN 2016 • 8:00PM Ruby’s Music Room • $25 See inside front cover for booking details * Booking fees may apply. 13 FEATURE EVENT Folkloric Gala @ Hamer Hall ... it’s our passion Through colour, vibrancy and movement, the Folkloric Gala Dance Concert will bring PolArt 2015 Melbourne to a close, by taking you on a visual and musical journey across Poland. The performances will include a mix of amateur theatre group plays, as well as plays from more sophisticated, professional Polish actors and directors, which will undoubtedly not only create interest in the Polish community, but also the greater Australian audience. 28 December 2015 will be a day dedicated to plays performed in English, and will provide the perfect opportunity for the broader Australian public to experience the theatrical element of PolArt. Another first at this year’s festival will be an evening named “Two Theatres”, during which two different theatre groups will perform single-act comedies. Plays will range in genre from stomach-aching comedies, to philosophical works, that capture the mind, and include dramas, that will leave the audience wanting more. ALL PERFORMANCES ARE HELD AT: Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne 100 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne See inside front cover for booking details 27 THEATRE Photographer: Tom Koprowski WIELEBNI Written by Sławomir Mrozek Set in the US province of New Anglia, a local parish committee eagerly await the arrival of a new priest. However, as a result of a bureaucratic mix up, two candidates arrive: Reverend Gloria Burton and Reverend Richard Bloom, who is of Jewish decent. An urgent committee meeting is called to sort out the mess, and decide who will become the new priest – a woman or a Jew – neither of which the town has ever seen. In this absurd comedy, Mrozek parodies how homo sapiens, as a species, put on their own cultural masks, corsets and shackles. SCENA 98 is a Perth-based theatre group. Established in 1988, with the aim to develop public speaking and performance skills, resulting in greater confidence to tackle life’s challenges. The main character, an army major is the host of the house. The play commences when his colleagues and his sisters arrive with the plan of a marriage arrangement between Zosia one of the young daughters of the older sister and the elderly Major. His sister, Orgonowa has a major role in this innocent intrigue and tries to convince the Major about the benefits of this peculiar arrangement. In the end, not only the Major falls for it, but other hussars accept the idea of getting married and being in love. Damy i Huzary (Dames and Hussars) is one of the favourite comedies frequently played in Polish Theatres. The actors and spectators simply love “Dames and Hussars”. THEATRE FANTAZJA of Sydney, was formed in 2002 as a non-profit organisation. It is difficult to label the group as amateur theatre, since many of its actors have formal drama training. Nine morals and customs are presented in this production, a synthesised version of Kitowicz’s original script: religion, religious society, Christmas nativity, child rearing, playing games at home, foods and beverages, drinking and drunkards, famous drunkards and finally ‘Smingus Dyngus’. Some morals and customs are now considered absurd, while others we still uphold in contemporary Polish culture. Directors: Tomasz Bujakowski Maryla Kuzmicka Performed by SCENA 98 in Polish. It is his job to safeguard them, fertile them and keep them safe. One night a fox arrives. He plays a beautiful, romantic serenade – music for lovers. The hens are enticed, attracted and enthralled by the fox. The rooster is trying to convince his three hens they should stay away from the gentle and beguiling charms of the fox but of course … Written in 1976, Mrozek portrays the world around him, but like in the fairy tales of La Fontaine, animal characters have human traits — a laugh about our imperfections. This is a show worth seeing. Director: Marta Kiec-Gubala Performed by THEATRE FANTAZJA in Polish. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Jeremiah, in his dreams and ambitions is a prophet and saviour. He is the supreme dictator. However, some or perhaps all this character says could be the product of fantasy and imagination. Creator of his own political, social, military and religious system, Jeremiah’s international ‘totalitarian democracy’ has crumbled and he is in hiding. He patiently awaits his executioners as the entire planet floods. “Jeremiahs Tuesday” is a postmodern, poetic, black grotesque monodrama, that explores dictatorship with metaphysical satire. “Jeremiahs Tuesday” has received amazing reviews at this year’s international Solo Theatre Festival in New York. In 2012, Steven Kennedy began his cooperation with Mrowinski with the play “Jeremiahs Tuesday”. This play inspired the creation of THE BLACK STAMP THEATRE CO. Director: Stefan Mrowinski Performed by THE BLACK STAMP THEATRE CO in English, featuring Stephen Kennedy. MON, 28 DEC 2015 • 6:00PM Duration: 60 mins $30/$25* (conc) — in conjunction with “Springer”. SPRINGER Written by Stefan Mrowinski This monodrama — featuring Kristof (Krzysztof) Kaczmarek — arose from an adaption of a short story of the same title. With a narrative centering around sport, Springer is the story of an ambitious sportsman, betrayal and loneliness in the face of a ferociously consumerist world, where emotions can easily become an unforgivable liability. The writing brutally highlights the paradox of a simple man, whose fierceness and strength underlay his success, yet who was indefensible to all that was morally vacuous around him. EXIT THEATRE INC. promotes innovative complex plays focusing on human relationships, absurd situations, beliefs and the pursuit of the meaning of life, with the aim to build a strong network of artistic people who are able to provide a dynamic and stimulating theatrical contribution, culminating in high quality performances. Director: Greg Carroll Performed by EXIT THEATRE INC in English. MON, 28 DEC 2015 • 6:00PM Duration: 50 mins $30/$25* (conc) — in conjunction with “Jeremiahs Tuesday”. * Booking fees may apply. 31 VISUAL ARTS Jarek Wojcik, Double Entendre, 2014. Since its inception, PolArt has celebrated New Year’s Day, with a holy mass, for participants, as well as the greater Polish community, in the city’s main cathedral, presided over by the Catholic Bishop of the host city. Melbourne will continue with this tradition, and St Patrick’s Cathedral, one of the most popular and iconic buildings in the Melbourne CBD, will be the venue to celebrate the first day, and new year, that will be 2016. The Cathedral will be filled with the beautiful Polish tradition of singing Christmas Carols. PolArt resonates with everyone in a very individual way. For some, it is a link to the country and heritage of their ancestors. For others, it preserves and celebrates their customs and traditions. Although Melbourne was home for Zofia Jaskewycz (nee Rospond), her heart remained in her beloved homeland - Poland. Born on 10 April 1934 in Wieliczka, Poland, Zofia Rospond near Krakow, into the patriotic Rospond family, Zofia migrated to Australia after completing university and in 1959 married the talented chemist Dr Taras Jaskewycz. They settled in Melbourne, but had no children. After battling a long illness, Dr Jaskewycz passed away in August 2013, and Zofia exactly one year later, on 17 August 2014. Zofia had an incredibly artistic soul, and although she called Australia home, everything Polish was always cherished by her. She continuously supported any cultural, religious and patriotic initiatives, and was often engrossed in Polish books, films, concerts, visual arts, anything that would link her to her Polish upbringing. She was concerned about the future of the Polish culture in Australia, what generations in years to come would know of the beautiful nation, and so her passion and joy lay in PolArt. Zofia truly believed that through this festival, Poland’s magnificent artistic culture could live on. She believed in it so much that, when she realised that her illness was serious, Zofia decided to bequeath her home to up keep the Polish culture and arts through PolArt festivals in Australia. To this end, Zofia established the Rospond Foundation. This generous and heartfelt gift by Zofia through the Rospond Foundation, will cement the Polish culture for generations to come in Australia. It will ensure that our children, and our children’s children will have the opportunity to experience, uphold and maintain the unique, colourful and proud Polish culture through PolArt festivals for years to come. 35 13th National Polish Arts Festival - Calendar of Events EVENT VENUE 27.12 28.12 29.12 30.12 31.12 01.01 02.01 03.01 POLART @ POLISH FESTIVAL The Polish Festival @ Federation Square welcomes PolArt to Federation Square Purchase tickets and find out all there is to know about PolArt 2015 Melbourne on 15 NOVEMBER 2015 at 10:00am.
