A Message from the Chair of the Board
Increase Your Business And Take The Challenge.
First I want to say a HUGE
THANK YOU to everyone who
participated in the Doolittle
Raiders 71st Reunion “The
Farewell Tribute” in April. These
great American Heroes trained for
their historic mission right here
at Eglin, and our community is
Mark Hamrick so fortunate to have hosted their
Owner, Vacuum Center final pubic reunion 71 years later.
This event was one that this community has never seen and certainly bigger then any event
the Fort Walton Beach Chamber has ever put together.
This was a great example of the term “team effort” and
it would not have been possible if that was not the case.
Dozens of businesses did not hesitate to step up and commit personnel and resources, including our lead sponsor
Tony Hughes and Beach Community Bank. When we
found out we would be hosting the 71st Reunion, Tony
told us that “Beach Community Bank was all in.” This
took great sponsors, hundred of volunteers, a dedicated
Chamber Staff willing to work long and hard hours, and
the public for so much support and showing these great
men how much this community appreciates our military
heroes, past and present. I am so proud to have been a
part of it and witness the hard work that made the event
so special.
Again THANK YOU ALL!!!!
It seems every where I go someone is asking me about
the Chamber. They want to know how it works, how it can

improve their business, and how they can get involved. I
always tell them how much the Chamber has helped my
business and so many others’, especially during these last
few years of economic downturn. I tell them of members
I know who do 50% of their business with other Chamber
members. Chamber members are very dedicated to doing
business with their fellow Chamber members whenever
possible. Then I tell them about one or two of our 30
committees that would be great for their type of business.
With 1.500 members we are the ninth largest Chamber in
the state, and I think that speaks for itself.
The last thing I tell them―and the point I want to
stress to you if you are not a Chamber member―is we
have a guarantee. We call it the Chamber Challenge. It’s
really very simple. Go to the Chamber web site or come
by the Chamber, fill out your membership app and pay
your dues. Soon after that you will be invited to the New
Member Lunch, which is a one hour orientation about the
benefits of your membership. At that time we will guarantee you that we will do everything we have promised
you or we will refund your membership dues in full at the
end of one year. You have nothing to lose; and if you take
advantage of the many Chamber opportunities available,
your business will benefit. On top of that you will meet
some great people and have a lot of fun.
That’s the Chamber Challenge. Take it today ―you’ll
be glad you did.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact
me or the Chamber staff. As always thank you for your
membership!!

President’s Message
FWB – Friendliest City . . . In the World??
I recently attended the City of Fort
Walton Beach planning retreat, where
the elected officials work with our city
staff to create a game plan for the coming years. I was very encouraged to
have such a forward-thinking council
and staff planning for our city’s future.
Ted Corcoran
One of the topics that was at the top
President/CEO/IOM
of everyone’s list—and an important
one to determine our mission—was:
What is Fort Walton Beach now and what do we want Fort
Walton Beach to become? I have begun informing our City
friends on the Chamber’s 2009 Community Visioning project.
We have the blueprint for this FWB Visioning/Branding process. Thus we will not have to recreate the wheel.
Although I don’t know where we will end up, I do know we
have to be very realistic about our options. What does FWB
have to offer? For example, the 2009 report noted the following as “FWB’s best known landmarks” (in order): Beaches,
Indian Mound, Okaloosa Island, Eglin AFB, Brooks Bridge,
The Landing, “Don’t Know,” Downtown, Uptown Station,
Gulfarium, The Boardwalk, Flag Pole at Uptown Station,
Goofy Golf and Hwy 98! Of course that does not take into
account any municipal boundaries. If we remove those that
are not actually in the City of FWB and its jurisdiction, we
have: Indian Mound, The Landing, Downtown, Uptown, and
Goofy Golf. Needless to say, we are not going to compete
with Orlando—or Destin for that matter-- on the basis of
attractions.
So what will our niche be? The Visioning report highlighted all the “other” great stuff we already know about our
area: beautiful beaches, pro military, family oriented, small
town feel, etc. However with that same bio, there are dozens
of similar towns in Florida, much less the Southeast.
What can we do that makes us stand out—and doesn’t cost
anything?? Free, no government financing, no grants—nothing. We can become the Friendliest City in Okaloosa County/
NW Florida/Florida! When your neighbor walks their dog past
your house, say Hello; when you see someone in the grocery
store, smile. [From a recent email sent to me (you know the
ones with the little puppy wagging its tail): A smile from you
can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don’t like you.]
Train your personnel to respond with “My pleasure”, instead
of “No problem.” Just convince yourself and your staff to
be…….friendlier! Lets’ just start being nicer to….. everyone.
Let’s begin now. How soon until Fort Walton Beach,
Florida is voted one of The Friendliest Cities in the World??
Have a great day!

Our members are going to some pretty glamorous places these days – and they’re
taking some good reading material right along with them.
If you choose to take your Coastlines with you on a trip, take a photo and share it
with us. Send it to [email protected].
On April 29, 2013, Rowena Crissey, Liezele Wtulich, and Gale
Jones, owners of Accounting with CJW, LLC, presented the Fort
Walton Beach Developmental Center with several bags and boxes
of toiletries for the use of the residents. The FWB Developmental
Center is a 63-bed residential facility for intellectually delayed adults.
They also brought a large basket of Liezele’s delicious homemade
brownies. Many thanks to these wonderful ladies!
Desley Parker of Success with Desley took a moment to check on things back home
while she was visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Kentico Teams with Bit-Wizards to create Digital
Marketing University (plus Bit-Wizards logo)
In another
of many firsts,
B i t - Wi z a r d s
launched
its first partner-developed website, Digital Marketing
University (DMU), a free marketing and training program
sponsored by Kentico CMS, designed to provide people
who are new to the marketing profession an opportunity
to learn, engage, and interact with top industry experts.
The Official Publication of the Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce | www.fwbchamber.com | May 2013
Kentico CMS hopes that by providing this resource, marketers will not only be able to take what they’ve learned
and apply it to their careers, but also share any insight or
new ideas with the DMU community.
Working with Thom Robbins, Chief Evangelist of
Kentico CMS, designers and developers from Bit-Wizards
turned the DMU idea into reality. “Choosing Bit-Wizards
enabled Digital Marketing University to leverage the best
of Kentico EMS, Windows Azure and responsive design
using Kentico +,” says Thom. “The Kentico community
of digital agencies and marketing professionals has so
much to offer in terms of education, resources, and networking. Any ‘student’ of Digital Marketing University
will get a big leg up as they begin their journey into the
exciting world of marketing. Bit-Wizards was key to
making that happen.”
The design team at Bit-Wizards for the DMU project was led by Michael Whalen, Director of Web
Development, with logo design by Paul Brinton, and site
development by Lisa Fuller, both of whom are web and
graphic designers.
Kentico+ is immediately available at: http://www.
kentico.com/plus.
The Digital Marketing University site is now live at:

Making Progress on the FWB Dog Park!
Cumulus Broadcasting, the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber
of Commerce, and the City of Fort Walton Beach – with the help of
a lot of friends – are happy to announce that we’ve made significant
progress on fundraising for the planned Fort Walton Beach Dog Park.
We’re at slightly more than $10,000 of the $30,000 needed to begin
construction. Our goal is to cut the ribbon on the park at Dog Daze on
October 12. At this rate, we’ll be able to make that goal – but we need
your help!
Donations of any size may be made at FWBDogPark.com, and
many donors have taken advantage of that option. We’ve also had great
support from the community. Tijuana Flats hosted a special fund-raising Yappy Hour at the restaurant on Eglin Parkway and raised almost
$500 at that event alone. Golden Corral sold hot dog plates at a recent
PAWS event, and raised $600. Thank you for your amazing support!
