About Us
Founded in 1926, Hutt Valley High School has been at the
forefront of secondary education in Lower Hutt for 90 years. We
are proud to be the guardians of this spirit of achievement and
our aim today is to develop it even further within the digital age.
We provide a quality state education that ensures that every one
of our students has the best possible chance to develop their
talent and to achieve success in a way that provides them with a
purposeful and rewarding future life.
In its Strategic Plan for the current period 2015 to 2018,
the school is focused on heart, body and mind as three
core elements of its activity. These elements summarise the
aspiration to produce healthy, active, happy and engaged young
people who participate in the vast array of activities offered in
the school, and who enjoy tremendous success academically
while serving others both in their school and wider society.
Outstanding former students of the school are to be found
in all walks of life and in almost every professional, cultural
and sporting field. Just as important to us is the continued
success as human beings that our students achieve by means
of contributing to the good citizenship that allows societies to
flourish. To that end, our students plan and produce a variety
of fund-raising and sponsorship activities, as well as a series of
special events that are aimed at assisting others. The service
ethos is very much to the forefront of this school’s vision of
what good citizenship is about, and is embedded in our senior
student roles in the form of Service Captains and Junior School
Captains, whose roles are to mobilise our capacity to assist
those around us both within and outside the school.
Our school reflects the richness and diversity of modern New
Zealand and in this large community there is ample opportunity
for all students to find like minds and so develop the lasting
friendships which contribute to student happiness and wellbeing. Our diversity is our greatest strength.
excellence. The pursuit of academic excellence is celebrated in
school assemblies and awards, and we are delighted to see the
school’s continued success in local and national scholarships
and awards. While a great deal of effort goes into that top end of
the academic profile, we also have the capacity and structures
to offer a wide range of support programmes for those who
require additional help to reach their goals.
We take pride in the range of sporting and cultural opportunities
offered to our students, with many nationally ranked successes
- and wider international representation - confirming the school’s
strength.
Twenty five students represented New Zealand in sport last
year. The steady growth in student participation in team sports
representing the school has been a feature of recent years, and
well over 900 students participate in regular inter-school sport.
Our strengths in Music, Drama, Dance, Film and the Arts are also
significant draw-cards for many new students.
Ross Sinclair
Principal
We expect and demand high standards of endeavour and
achievement, reinforcing this with thorough programmes of
health education covering the skills of social responsibility, selfdiscipline and self-reliance that students need as they progress
towards adult life. Our goal is to produce creative, well-qualified,
confident and engaged students who understand the rights and
responsibilities of good citizenship in a modern society. When
we do that, we help to create young adults of whom we and their
parents can be proud; students who live up to our school vision
to “be the best you can be”.

Student Leadership
We value leadership and active participation in the life of the school. Our students have many
opportunities to be involved in a diverse range of activities; active participation, support for the efforts
of others, service to the school community and leadership are encouraged and acknowledged. A
formal leadership development programme runs from Year 11 through to Year 13.
Student Leaders
Madison hemson
Head Girl
I can’t believe it’s my last year at Hutt Valley High School. It feels like
just yesterday I was walking through the gates on my first day of Year
9. Before you know it, your college days are over and there’s no replay
or no rewind, so this year I urge all students to dive at every opportunity,
be brave and take risks. Hutt Valley High School is a big school which
means big opportunities and a huge range of experiences!
Here at Hutt Valley High we offer a wide range of subjects, groups
and sports that you most likely wouldn’t be offered at any other high
school. I myself can certainly say I’ve had a journey over the last four
years, from trying out Spanish and Food Tech in my junior years to
finding myself taking sciences and maths in Year 11, 12 and 13 just
shows how much we offer and how much you can learn and change
over the years you spend here at HVHS. Believe it or not I took part in
the Wellington U18 Lawn Bowls team last year, all because I decided to
give a new sport a go just for fun with a few of my friends. So I urge you
to get out there and don’t be afraid to try new things, you never know
where it could lead.
As well as having a huge range of opportunities to get involved in here
at Hutt Valley High, we also have a very supportive staff and senior
leadership team who help provide a friendly and warm environment to
learn in. I can definitely say with huge confidence that the five years
you spend at high school will be the best ever! We are already one term
down in 2016, so let’s make this year the best one and smash it out of
the park!

The Head Boy and Girl, their Deputies and the Sports, Cultural, Service and Junior School Captains
represent the school both within school and to the community. One of their main roles is to motivate
the student body, encourage participation in events and organise activities that engage students
from all year levels.
This year’s leaders are:

Student Council
Each year level has its own student council. Delegates then form the wider School Council. Their task
is to promote school activities, including welfare and fundraising for community causes.
Liaison
Liaison students are attached to each Year 9 mentor class, the LSU and international students to
support the important transition to secondary school.
The first day of Term 1 is a “Year 9 Only” day, which is a wonderful opportunity for new entrants to
the school to find their way around, and for the liaison students to assist with orientation. Liaison
students apply for the role, and once accepted undergo leadership training.
Peer Tutoring
Year 13 Students volunteer to work with other students after school to assist them
with class work.
Student Centre
The Student Centre is a very popular venue at interval and lunchtime, and is used
by all levels up to Year 12. It is valued as an excellent amenity for students. Year
13 students have their own common room.
Interest Groups
The following clubs and groups are currently running within the school: Anime
Club, Bake Club, Board Games Club, Book Clubs, Card Games Club, Debating,
Fashion Club, Greenfingers Horticultural Club, New Kiwi Club, Queer Straight
Alliance, Release, Robotics Club and Scribblers Writing Club.
Service Opportunities
Duke of Edinburgh, Emergency Support Crew, Relay for Life, Science Technicians,
Service Council, Student Librarians, World Challenge, World Vision Committee and
Year Level Councils.
Restorative Practices
At Hutt Valley High School, a range of staff are trained in conducting restorative
meetings to address a range of situations; this includes mediation, classroom
conferencing and restorative meetings. Some senior students are also trained as
student mediators.
Alexander calder
Head Boy
I find myself extremely privileged and honoured to be leading our school this year. We are a
community of talented young people progressively growing with respect to numbers and with
respect to awards and achievements. With large numbers, comes great responsibilities but also
great opportunities able to be experienced through many sporting, academic, cultural & extracurricular activities that aren’t offered at your average high school.
My interests lie within the boundaries of science and mathematics but I also avidly love the
game of Tennis. Although these interests have always been inside of me, I am able to say that
the teachers at Hutt Valley High have taught, mentored and challenged me to think outside
these boundaries to further develop my knowledge in said areas.
I am now one term into my journey as Hutt Valley High 2016 Head Boy and as much as I am
looking forward to what the rest of this year holds, I cannot stop but think that it is my last few
terms left of my school life. As Head Boy I am challenged with coordinating full school events,
delegating jobs within the Student Leadership Team, responsibly and willingly taking action
wherever I can to better the school and most importantly making sure that the students inside
the school body are gaining more than they could have asked for from a high school experience.
HVHS has an abundance of well-rounded students excelling in their areas of interest. They
are led by an amazing group of student leaders with copious amounts of knowledge, support,
encouragement and spirit to share around with anyone that may be facing problems inside
or outside of school. Our staff, senior leadership team and senior students maintain a fun
environment to learn in and act as compelling role models for young students to look up to.
I cannot express how important education is to a person, so, as I and the student leadership
team strive to maintain, progress and better the student life at HVHS, we welcome you to Hutt
Valley High. You will most definitely enjoy it.

Student Support
Guidance and Counselling Department
In addition to the pastoral advice given by deans, two part-time and two full-time guidance counsellors
work with students on a confidential basis. The Counsellors can also provide information about, and help
make, referrals to outside agencies when appropriate. Caregivers and parents may contact the guidance
staff at any time, if they have concerns about their son or daughter.
The Guidance and Counselling Department also implements a range of proactive and supportive
programmes for individual and personal development.
They include:
• STUDENT MEDIATION: a programme led by senior students to offer assistance to junior students who
may be having relationship problems and conflicts.
• LIFE SKILLS: a variety of programmes are offered involving topics such as resilience, assertiveness,
managing anger and relationships. These can be as part of a group or as an individual.
• PURPOSE-DESIGNED programmes using external agencies.
We also liaise with external agencies as needed.
Further information about the Guidance Department can be found on the HVHS website.
Youth Workers
We also have four part-time youth workers on staff at Hutt Valley High School this year. They are involved
in mentoring, group work, running programmes, leadership training and breakfast club.

Our Facilities
Our size is our strength, and gives us the flexibility to offer a
wide range of option subjects and extra-curricular activities.
This is reflected in our facilities which are extensive.
Woburn Road campus
The Woburn Road campus consists of a variety of buildings
spanning 50 years. In the last ten years a new library and
administration block, Learning Support Unit, Physical
Education gymnasium and Art block have been completed.
The old library has become a student centre, to complement
the Year 13 common room/pavilion. There are specialist
Dance and Drama rooms, as well as six computer rooms.
There is a new graphics area with computer facilities and the
school has a laser cutter for use in technology work.
FACILITIES
Our facilities include the following:
• Library and information centre
• Six computer suites and portable class sets of
chromebooks and tablets
• Photographic dark room
• Three gymnasiums
• Marae
• Learning Support Unit
• Year 13 common room
• Student Centre
• Recording studio
• Science laboratories
Community Involvement
The provision of additional resources for the school has
been helped by an active Parents Association. The joint
Community/School Gymnasium enables a large number of
people to use the school, and the proximity of community
facilities means that students can easily go outside
the school for work experience, Art Gallery, Library and
Polytechnic visits.
• Careers library
• Canteen
• Medical facilities
• Modern Art block with dedicated computer
design facilities
• Modern Dance and Drama facilities
• Horticultural Unit
• Data projectors in all classrooms

Studying with us in Years 9 & 10
Learning at HVHS
Awhina Whanau
All Year 9 and 10 students will study within a ‘Learning
Hub’ framework. Students will join a small mentor group
where their learning and academic care is closely monitored
and guided by the mentor teacher. They will study English,
Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Social Studies
as a form class.
The Awhina Whanau provides contact and engagement
with a university setting to our Year 9-13 Maori and Pacifika
students, with the intention of opening up pathways to
further education in the area of Science. Students meet their
university mentors on a regular basis both here at HVHS and
at Victoria University.

Learning Support
Gifted and Talented
The school offers a wide range of support for those who
have recognised learning difficulties, or who are diagnosed as
being in need of extra assistance. Reading teachers give
one-on-one teaching, with teacher aides being assigned
to some students and classes to provide in-class support.
We are able to access additional support from the RTLB
(Resource Teacher, Learning and Behaviour), and GSE (Group
Special Education). Literacy and Numeracy support options
are offered in Years 9 and 10, often replacing a foreign
language. Special Assessment conditions may be provided
for tests and exams.
Students may receive support from the David Kaye
Scholarship fund to participate in activities outside of
school. Many of our gifted and talented students, seniors
and juniors, choose to enter the many competitions offered
in curriculum areas such as the Australian Maths, Science
and English competitions, Nga Manu Korero, and other
national competitions in fields such as Music, Language and
Commerce.
Starting Hutt Valley High School was the biggest
step of my education to date. Taking that step
was hard and scary, but the Deans, teachers and
students did everything that they could to make
the transition as smooth as possible. I was very
nervous on my first day along with everybody else.
I had so many questions that I wanted answers to.
Fortunately, after our Year 9 Assembly I felt more at
ease and confident about starting high school.
Inquiry Extension Programme
The first day in our new Mentor Class was mainly
about getting to know our classmates and learning
about where to go around the school. The teachers
gave us a map of where to go and a timetable with
all of our classes on it. We had two great Liaison
Students who showed us around the school, helped
us to get to know each other and answered all of
our questions. All in all, the first day was excellent
and gave me confidence to be myself and sign up
for extra-curricular activities.
Learning Support Unit for
Students with Special Needs
The Learning Support Unit caters for students who are ORRS
funded at a high or very high needs level. It offers an adapted
educational programme developed to meet the needs of each
individual student. In addition to general curriculum subjects,
students study the SPEC life skills modules. Senior students
have the opportunity to study NZQA Supported Learning
Units and to complete a comprehensive transition to work or
community programme.
At Year 9 we offer an Inquiry Extension Programme. This is
open to all Year 9 students, has a selection process and is
new for 2017.
I highly recommend that when you come to Hutt
Valley High School, you immerse yourself in the
rich culture and community of the school. Make the
most of every opportunity and get involved.

Gaining Qualifications Years 11, 12 and 13
Qualifications
Year 12
The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)
is the main qualification for all senior secondary school
students. In Years 11, 12 and 13 students are aiming to
obtain sufficient credits to be awarded certificates at Levels 1,
2 and 3. Students are able to get the NCEA from a wide range
of studies, within and beyond the school curriculum.
All students take English and four other subjects from the
Year 11 and 12 lists plus a study line. Students may apply to
study six subjects based on a strong Level 1 performance.
How are students assessed?
In most subjects there is a mix of internal and external
assessment using Achievement Standards and/or Unit
Standards. A mix of internal and external assessments
ensures that all students have an opportunity to demonstrate
their abilities. External assessments include written
examinations and other assessments such as portfolios of
student work.
Year 11
It is important at this level to keep future options as wide
open as possible and students at Year 11 are encouraged to
take a broad range of subjects. All students take six subjects,
and these will be assessed against Achievement Standards
or Unit Standards. English, a Mathematics subject, and a
Science subject are compulsory.
Alternative Pathways
Gateway is a Year 12 and 13 programme offered to students
wishing to combine school and workplace study. Students
choose their careers and work towards gaining relevant
qualifications. Students can study at all levels of NCEA using
an individual programme. Students must take one line of
Gateway.
Year 13
All Year 13 students will take five (occasionally six) subjects,
chosen from the Year 11, 12 and 13 columns of the flow
chart. There are no compulsory subjects at this level. Entry
to Year 13 subjects is not automatic. Students are normally
required to first gain credits at Level 2 before continuing with
a subject at Level 3.
Academic Focus
High performing students are encouraged to enter
Scholarship and are given extra assistance in preparation for
this exam. Where student numbers allow, streamed classes
are created.

Sera Rawson

Arriving at HVHS was a bit of a shock for me; the number of pupils at my
primary school was less than the number of teachers here! Despite this, I
was much more excited than I was nervous, I could not wait to take part in
every opportunity presented to me.
The two areas that I was most excited about at my brand new school
were music and academic opportunities. The range, not only of subjects,
but also of tutorials, extension programs and support systems, has been
extremely beneficial from day one. The guidance even enabled me to gain
Scholarship English in Year 12 last year.
The seemingly endless range of extracurricular activities has also been
something I have relished in my time here. I came to the school already
having a fairly broad musical background, and the school enhanced this by
building on both my musical knowledge and my confidence in performing. I
discovered new music that I had never considered previously - not because
my musical background was insufficient, but rather because the school
music program was so extensive that it introduced me to completely new
ideas. The music teachers, like other teachers in the school, have shown
their belief in me and are always encouraging me, as the school motto says,
to push myself “to the highest.”
By taking all the opportunities that I can, I have really developed as a
person, and without each and every one of them I could be a very different
person today. Although it may sound cliched, get involved, take part, and
seize every opportunity you get, your future self will thank you for it.

provide the hands on assistance throughout all sport is a continual focus of the school.
The Hutt Valley High School Sports Club meet throughout the year with a view of the strategic direction of sport at HVHS
and the major code ‘steering’ committees oversee/direct the processes within their code.
Our two senior sports captains are represented on the HVHS Sports Club and also chair the student sports committee.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES:
Coaching
Many of our senior students enjoy the experience of
coaching junior teams in their respective codes. Some
NCEA credits are available – some do it for the passion
and enjoyment of sharing their knowledge/skills with
others.
Officiating
Officiating is a vital part of sport and some officiating
courses are available across various codes and are
funded by the school where the student uses that
qualification to officiate HVHS teams/sport.
Intermediate School Mentoring
Coaching and officiating at various Intermediate school
events throughout the year is also offered to senior
students through Senior PE courses. This is a wonderfully
positive experience to develop those mentoring skills for
our students.

Sports Captain
When I look back over the last four years of High School, I think highly of all the
sporting successes and experiences myself and the school have had.
Hutt Valley High School recommends and pushes the involvement of students in
sport. Although there is a high level of competitiveness and successes, we also
acknowledge the amount of social teams. Hutt Valley High just want people involved,
whether that’s playing in the First XI Football team or a social Lawn Bowls team,
if a student is participating, that is all we can ask for and it is great to see. The
involvement of students playing sports is growing!
Hutt Valley High School offer over 30 sports, and a very wide range, from Rugby, to the
often unheard of, Ultimate Frisbee. There will always be something to float your boat!
Myself being so involved in sport over the last four years, has been very exciting. I
have learnt a lot, from leadership skills, how to encourage and how at the end of the
day, you have to be having fun. For the last two years I have Captained the First XI
Girls Football team, and being involved in the squad since Year 9, I have seen myself
grow, not only as a player but as a person. The countless unreal experiences, and the
annoying but important speed bumps and letdowns, brought me and my teammates
together, and we were taught to drive and work hard for success as a team. I will now
have friends for life because of it.
Anyone will gain life skills from being involved or participating in any kind of sport. All
I can say is that the experiences and opportunities every student is provided with, is
something you must grab. My time at Hutt Valley High has been an absolute amazing
ride, majorly because of my involvements in Sport.
I urge that you get involved at Hutt Valley High, it just makes it that little bit more
exciting!

Birgitte
from Norway
Going on an International experience is the best decision I’ve
made so far. Leaving my country, friends and family for a year
has given me the opportunity to develop; push limits and make
friends and memories for a lifetime.
Travelling from the cold and small country, Norway, all the
way to the other side of the earth was quite a transition and
very overwhelming. You build up all these expectations on
how you think this adventure will turn out, and let me tell you,
it’ll be amazing. Hutt Valley High has had several generations
of international students and visitors, and knows exactly
how to make sure you’ll have an unforgettable experience.
Professional teams of teachers and deans have the experience
and knowledge to deal with new, nervous and perhaps scared
students. You will be taken good care of, and they all will make
sure you have the time of your life.
With the diversity of students at the school, you’ll soon find
yourself good friends to enjoy this experience with. The students
are great, very accommodating, helpful and supportive. I’ve met
some amazing people who have played a very important role
during my stay. The people at this school, teachers, deans or
students, know how to put a smile on your face.
Hutt Valley High has offered me experiences, memories,
opportunities and challenges, but most of all, an amazing
adventure. With the variety of subjects offered at the school,
you’ll find something that suits you, both academically and with
your interests. It’ll be difficult to leave this school and beautiful
country I now proudly call mine.
Thank you for an amazing stay and for giving me memories for
a lifetime.
