Spring 2010 - Kansas Quilters Organization
Kansas Quilters Organization
NEWSLETTER
Vol. 26, No. 2 • Spring 2010
NOTES FROM Kathy
In January, we began a new year for the Kansas Quilters
Organization, the Kansas state-wide quilters guild. Your board met
to work out details for the coming year. We certainly hope to see
you all at the spring meeting, June 4 and 5, in Lawrence, Kansas.
Lawrence is the quintessential college town with lots of restaurants
and great downtown shopping. And while you're downtown, you
won't want to miss Sarah's for quilt fabric, The Stitching Post for
more quilt fabric and The Yarn Barn for all your knitting needs.
Lawrence is replete with history and quilt tradition.
A wonderful weekend is being planned which will include
workshops by some of the most talented quilt artists in the state.
Come and take classes in your favorite medium or try something
new. You will be able to choose from Russian Punch Needle, Fine
Hand Quilting, Machine Piecing and Wool Appliqué. Our guest
national teacher, Terry Clothier Thompson, will inspire you, too,
with her very popular Fabric Camp! On Saturday, Terry will offer
two lectures that are sure to inspire and enlighten.
In this newsletter you'll find all the information about the meeting,
registration and location. I've been to the hotel and while there are
no elevators, there is easy access to two levels from the parking lots.
Some of the classes will be on the same level as rooms. There will
be people to help with getting supplies to the classes, so I really think
everyone will be pleasantly surprised! We look forward to seeing
you in Lawrence!
Membership in KQO is a benefit to all so I hope you will help us
grow! Do you know someone who used to be a member? Please
encourage them to rejoin and come to the meeting in June. How
about inviting someone you know who is new to KQO? We'd love
to see our numbers grow. The more the merrier!

2009 Spring Meeting
Come and join the fun in Lawrence, or as a former co-worker would say
Athens on the Kaw. We will be offering 5 classes on Friday. Terry
Thompson will be teaching a class based on her 3 day class called Fabricamp.
Students will need to bring old quilts, tops, and blocks to add to their learning experience.
Jeanne Poore will teach a class on Fine Hand Quilting. Jeanne will have a kit available for
$15. Natalie Hutchison will offer a class on Russian Punch Needle Embroidery. If you
cannot find a needle in your area, contact Natalie and she will get one for you. She will
also have some kits available if you cannot find one. Tony Munoz will be teaching twisted
Bargello. Please note that you need to use complimentary colors and the quilt top can
probably be completed in class if the strips are cut and sewn together before class. Leave it
to a retired schoolteacher to give you homework before the class starts. Elaine Boese will
bring us wool appliqué with a choice of two projects. Kits will be available but Elaine will
need advanced notice of your project choice to make sure she has the right kit for each
student.
There are several quilt shops in the Lawrence area and of course enjoy shop hoping your
way to Lawrence. I recently visited the shop on the east side of Manhattan. They have a
purple Singer Featherweight in their display case. I hope to see many of you in June.
When doing hand appliqué and traveling, simply
place your bobbins with the color threads needed and
place them in a medicine bottle. Drill tiny holes
through the top of bottle and pull up your thread
colors. They will stay neat and easy to use! One
medicine bottle holds approximately 7 bobbins of
color. Nancy in Florida

Featured Quilt Artist
Terry Clothier Thompson
Our regional/national teacher in Lawrence will be Terry
Clothier Thompson. Please visit her website
www.terrythompson.com. Terry currently lives in
Lawrence. When Terry was a little girl, she loved to play
at her grandparent‟s farm in Peace Creek, Kansas. She
learned about the simple pleasures of farm life, and the
trials and tribulations of a Kansas homestead...and she
learned how to sew. Terry is a quilt artist, pattern
designer, writer and historian. She served as one of the
principal documenters for the Kansas Quilt Project and
her chapter on conversation prints is included in the book
from that project. According to her website, the goal of her
classes goes beyond teaching “how to" techniques.
Students will also gain a deeper understanding of the history behind their heritage
quilts, which makes the “making” process so much
more meaningful.
On Friday Terry will offer a class based on Fabricamp.
Students are to bring quilts, quilt tops, or blocks from
the 19th century and 20th century up to the 1930‟s.
Terry will also bring items from her collection. The
students will learn about techniques used to make the
quilt or top, and clues to dating the fabrics used in the
quilt
Saturday morning her lecture will be on Red and
Green Appliqué quilts and in the afternoon the lecture
will explore Pioneer Quilts and Pioneer Stories. Terry
will bring quilts for her lectures as well as slides.

Hand Quilting Class by Jeanne Poore
Jeanne has been a KQO member for 20+ years. She is an international
quilt instructor, lecturer, fabric designer for Marcus Brothers Textiles,
pattern designer and author. She also judges quilt shows. Being an
active member is numerous quilting organizations and part time
employee of Prairie Point Quilt Shop keeps her busy. She has designed
the in house block-of- the- month pattern series for the shop starting the
8th year this September. She enjoys redrafting and making old fashion
traditional patterns using lots of fabric—the more the better. Best of all
she really enjoys sharing her quilts and instructing quilt making.
Class Description:
Hand quilting – Techniques, Tools, Tips, Tricks, and Success
Topics are marking tools, the proper types of batting, basting small and large quilts, needles,
thread types, thimbles, hoop sizes, and improving your quilting stitches. There will be time for
students to practice what they have learned while quilting on their class project. Students are
encouraged to bring quilt tops for suggestions on how to quilt them and what designs to use to
compliment the top.
Supply List:
1. One yard of cotton fabric for backing and binding.
2. Miniature Whole Cloth Quilt Top – Pre-marked fabric
squares by The Stencil Company.
3. Batting – Hobbs Thermore – 20” square
4. Hand quilting thread. I recommend the color to match the
quilt top (Kit color is natural). However if you want your
stitches to show, you may choose colored thread.
5. Quilt basting needles.
6. #10 quilting between needles.
7. A 10” quilting hoop.
8. Utility scissors for cutting batting.
9. Small scissors for cutting thread.
10.A thimble with good denting dimples to fit the middles finger of your writing hand.
11.Blue painters tape (I will have a roll to share).
12.Paper and pencil for note taking.
Note: Because I do not know what the lighting will be in the classroom, I suggest you may
wish to bring a small light.
I will have Kits available containing the preprinted top, batting and backing for the
design shown for $15. It is the natural (off white) color.

Russian Needle Punch by Natalie Hutchison
Natalie J. Hutchison lives in Olathe, KS with her husband
Rick. They have a 17-year old daughter, Rachel. Although
Natalie has been around quilting and quilters her entire
life, she didn’t start quilting seriously until 2003. Some of
her fondest memories are of quilting on the patio with her
Great Grandmother’s church group. And a prized
possession is a small doll’s quilt made by another Great
Grandmother.
Natalie travels regularly with her mother, Jeanne Poore,
helping with classes and lectures.
This centuries old needle art creates
stunningly beautiful pieces with a richness of
texture and color and can be created in only a
few hours with relatively few supplies. Small to
large pieces can be used for all types of
decorative items: pillows, basket lids, button
covers, purses, framed art, tote bags. The list is
endless
Punch needle is a wonderful take along
project that requires very few supplies and is
so easy to learn. It is one easy stitch. Come
join me and punch your way to fun.
Supplies needed:
Small „sharp‟ scissors
6 inch embroidery hoop – interlocking lip
Punch Needle – I used the Cameo brand because it is very comfortable, but any
brand that uses 3 strands of flow will work
Pre-printed Pattern or Kit – most needle craft stores, quilt shops and craft stores carry
small kits that have pre-stamped weavers cloth
Embroidery Floss – usually one skein per color is enough for small projects. However,
you may want two for your background color. Don‟t worry about the number on the
skeins. Pick the colors you like for the project you are working. I use DMC that I
purchase at Joann‟s.
If you have any questions or need further information, please give me a call
913-829-6322 or email [email protected]
If you have trouble finding a needle or kit, please let me know at least a week before
the class so I can bring one with me.

1981. He is a charter member of the Quilters' Guild of Parsons‖ , a
charter member and past president of KQO, the current president and

Wool Basket or Bouquet by Elaine Boese
I have been hooked on quilting since 1988 when I attended a guild meeting in Emporia,
KS. I love all forms and aspects of quilting, but recently have spent more time doing
handwork than sitting in front of my machine. I am encouraged, inspired and challenged
in my quilt making by the quilters that I have
come in contact with as they have made me
grow in areas I wouldn’t have without them. I
call Marysville, KS my home now along with
my husband Rick, where I work as a case
manager at a mental health agency. I am
excited to share and learn about quilting with
others who also love quilts and quilt making
by lecturing and teaching quilt classes.
The wool project is an adaptation of a design
by Eveline Folind and appeared in the KC
Star. You can choose to either make an
elongated basket with flowers (13x20) or a
framed bouquet (15x18). Students will enjoy a
relaxing day of hand sewing, learning tips and
techniques in the use of wool and ways to
improve their handwork and decorative stitches.
