Peace Lutheran Church 240 West 9th Avenue, Oshkosh, WI 54902 (920) 231-4730 E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.peaceoshkosh.com PRINTS OF PEACE NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2016 Published Monthly—Issue 201601 OFFICE HOURS 8:00 AM—1:00 PM Monday—Friday WORSHIP SCHEDULE Sunday Traditional Worship at 8:00 a.m. Sunday Praise Worship at 10:30 a.m. Monday Casual Worship at 5:30 p.m. Wishing you a holy and a blessed Epiphany! RAMBLINGS OF A PASTOR three ways: 60% to charitable programs in our community, synod and throughout the world, 25% to support new programs and opportunities within our congregation, and 15% for college scholarships. ‘THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING’ In 1986, a group of faithful Peace Lutheran parishioners pooled together both a vision and some financial gifts to lay the foundation for what would become both a blessing and gift to the Oshkosh community. The Peace Lutheran Mission Endowment Fund took foresight on the part of its founding contributors and continues to be guided by a committee that possesses both hearts for the mission of the Endowment Fund and for those who are awarded grants. The Endowment is truly a blessing for Peace Lutheran Church and we need to realize what a big deal it is to have one as healthy and as large as we do. We also must remember that it got to where it is today, which is over a million dollars, because of the gracious gifts of many (58 different estates, and many memorials and gifts). I find this as a wonderful way to continue a legacy, to support a vision, and to make a difference in the world. If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, the Endowment team is available for any questions you might have, and if you are feeling a tug on your heart to give a financial gift to the Endowment Fund, please remember that you may include the Endowment in your will, memorial gifts may be given to the Endowment, and you may always make a gift to the Fund at anytime in the form of cash, stock, or real estate. If you didn't know, the Endowment Fund began awarding grants to the greater community back in 1993 and has been every year since. The way the Endowment Fund works is that the principle amount of any gift to the Endowment Fund remains in the fund. Only the earnings from investment of these funds are distributed, which means, the bigger the fund - the more interest there is to serve our mission and to make an impact in the world. Peace Lutheran Church is truly blessed to have such a wonderful gift as the Endowment Fund. Would you consider helping to keep the endowment fund as the "gift that keeps giving" and to strengthen how much of an impact we can make each year? Since the Fund first began giving grants - $933,375 has been given, with the most recent gifts in 2014 and 2015 of $57,000 and $62,500 respectively. That makes a huge impact in our Community of Oshkosh and for our ministry partners, local and abroad! The money is granted in these Peace, Pastor John FAITH FORMATION projectFAITH:GENERATIONS LENT is coming. And speaking of the Christmas season, I just wanted to touch base about the winner of the Chili Cook-Off that was held on December 9th. Along with the Chili Cook-off we had a basket raffle provided by a number of different teams from the church. It was a very good turnout and enjoyed by many. There were many delicious pots of chili, but the winner over all was Joe Friday with his White Chicken Chili. Congratulations, Joe, everyone wants your recipe! I would like to welcome George Sawall to the staff at PLC. George is our new maintenance person and is also a member of the Property Team. George decided to take the position after doing a short interim. He is very knowledgeable about many things around the building and is doing a great job. Thanks, George, we are glad to have you here! Here is an invitation and a reminder, to attend the upcoming annual meeting which will be held on Sunday, January 31st at 9:15 am. If you attend the 8:00 o'clock service, please plan on sticking around for the meeting and if you attend the 10:30 service, please plan on coming early. We will be presenting the Budget for 2016, along with a ballot, voting in new people in various areas of the church and such. So please plan on being a part of the annual meeting. The service featured traditional Christmas carols sung by the entire Sunday School ensemble as well as special music by smaller groups. The program also included a three-act video presentation, entitled A Light in the Forest, which tells the story of a family searching for the perfect tree and wind up finding an important Christmas message. The video included commercials dealing with aspects of the Christmas Spirit delivered by angels, shepherds and an innkeeper. All told, more than two dozen of our Sunday Schoolers appeared on-screen or had significant parts in producing the video. All our Sunday School families will get a DVD copy of the video program in January. Sunday School will resume on January 10. The Sunday School Ensemble sings Away in a Manger. 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL Joseph expressing his gratitude to an innkeeper in Bethlehem. Big Al, the owner of Wautoma’s most famous Christmas tree farm. Mary gives the Bethlehem Inn a “one-star” rating. In the hills near Bethlehem, shepherds tell of seeing a host of angels. The Grizwald family, ready to begin their annual search for the perfect tree. A host of angels describe their role in the coming of the Messiah. 8 PEACE PRESCHOOL GREETINGS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF PEACE CHRISTIAN PRESCHOOL, search for!) gingerbread boys, the 3K children had a celebration for Baby Jesus, and the 4K children enjoyed a day in their PJs with cookies and hot chocolate and a ride on the Polar Express. We will be missing Ms. Dara for the first couple of weeks of January. She will be in Guyana, Africa. She will be greatly missed but this is an extremely amazing opportunity for her so we’re also very excited for her. This will help us prepare for our transition for next year as Ms. Dara will be moving on to the next stage of her life and start her pastoral internship. It’s a new year! This is the time that we all make resolutions for how much better we will become in 2016. For the benefit of our great church newsletter editor, one of my resolutions is to get my newsletter submissions in on time--maybe even early! Honestly though, I would love to become one of those people who have the habit of being not just on time, but early. Unfortunately, my grandpa nicknamed me “the caboose” at the age of five when I was always the last grandchild to the bus stop, and the habit hasn’t ended now that I’m one week away from turning 40 years old. We have one need that we are hoping members of the church might help us with. While all of our children are capable, not all of them remember to come to school with mittens. We try to keep a supply of gloves and mittens at the preschool but our supply is not adequate. What the teachers REALLY want are LITTLE MITTENS. These are easier for the children to put on themselves. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help. December finished with a lot of busy activities in the preschool. Our preschool concert was well attended again this year. I wish we had a way to count the number of people who attend. We have 61 children enrolled and each child brings an entourage of 4-8 family members with them on the evening of the concert. We fill the pews in the sanctuary and flood up to the pews in the balcony. We have great volunteers from the Church community who help for the evening with our bake sale, playing the music, and taking photos. This year our bake sale proceeds of $195 were contributed to Luther the Cow’s fund-raising drive. We hope our contribution helped reach the goal needed to purchase a water purification system for a third world community. Wishing you all a great new year. Heather Miller, Center Director Peace Christian Preschool The classrooms were definitely busy as well. All the children made keepsake gifts for their families; the 4K children made (and then had to 9 10 11 8:00 AM Traditional Worship 9:15 AM ANNUAL MEETING 9:15 AM Sunday School 10:30 AM Praise Worship FIRST COMMUNION SUNDAY (both worship services) 31 5:30 PM Casual Worship 25 24 8:00 AM Traditional Worship 9:15 AM Sunday School 9:15 AM First Communion Session 10:30 AM Praise Worship 10:20 AM Fire Drill 12:55 PM Fire Drill 5:30 PM Casual Worship 18 17 8:00 AM Traditional Worship 9:15 AM Sunday School 9:15 AM First Communion Session 10:30 AM Praise Worship 7:00 PM Adult Men's Study Group at Duwell’s Home 5:30 PM Casual Worship 6:15 PM Mutual Ministry 11 5:30 PM Casual Worship 4 Monday 8:00 AM Traditional Worship 9:15 AM -Sunday School 9:15 AM First Communion Session 10:30 AM Praise Worship 10 FOOD PANTRY SUNDAY 8:00 AM Traditional Worship NO SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY 9:15 AM Leader Ship Team Meeting 10:30 AM Praise Worship 3 Sunday 7:00 PM Barbershopper's Rehearsal 26 9:00 AM 3K Only Fire Drill 10:00 AM Staff Meeting 7:00 PM Barbershopper's Rehearsal 19 8:30 AM 4K Craft Day 6:00 PM Leadership Team Meeting 7:00 PM Barbershopper's Rehearsal 12 10:00 AM Staff Meeting 5:30 PM Spirit Team Meeting 7:00 PM Barbershopper's Rehearsal 5 Tuesday 6:00 PM Bell Choir 6:30 PM Chancel Choir 6:30 PM projectFAITH: Class 27 5:00 PM Mission Team 6:00 PM Bell Choir 6:30 PM Chancel Choir 6:30 PM projectFAITH: Class 20 11:30 AM Lunch Bunch at Friar Tuck’s 5:30 PM Stewardship Team Meeting 6:00 PM Bell Choir 6:30 PM Chancel Choir 6:30 PM projectFAITH: Class 13 6:00 PM Bell Choir 6:30 PM Chancel Choir 6:30 PM projectFAITH: Class 6 Wednesday 6:00 PM Pickle Ball 28 4K Conference Day 9:00 AM VPs Quilting 11:30 AM VPs Bible Study 12:00 PM VPs Potluck 4:30 PM Worship Team 6:00 PM Pickle Ball 21 6:00 PM Pickle Ball 14 9:00 AM VPs Quilting 11:30 AM VPs Bible Study 12:00 PM VPs Potluck 12:30 PM PEP Meeting 6:00 PM Pickle Ball 7 Thursday 29 22 15 9:00 AM Head Start Conference 8 NEW YEARS DAY (Office Closed) No Public School 1 Friday 30 23 16 9 2 Saturday T HOSE S ERVING U S I N JANUARY 2 01 6 8:00 AM Acolytes—Andy “Mo” Moscinski 268-8170 or 231-4730 Jan 3 Lauren Case Jan 10 Alyssa Nelson Jan 17 Jack Kese Jan 24 Ryan Kangas Jan 31 10:30 AM Hannah Sherman Jack Kese Maleigha Jack Kese Altar Guild—Joyce Nikolaus 233-2612 Jan 3 Samantha Hall Jan 10 Signe Nelson Jan 17 Joyce Nikolaus Jan 24 Sally Buck Jan 31 Joyce Christianson Jessica Felker David Nelson Andy Janke Cori Stromberg Jessica Felker Assisting Ministers Jan 3 Heather Kangas Jan 10 Lucinda Porter Jan 17 Ryan Kangas Jan 24 Heather Kangas Jan 31 Lauren Case Penny Angell Cori Stromberg Donna Johnson Rev.
