HealthCare Partners staff! For a complete calendar listing, please refer to pages 4-5.
February:
It’s American Heart Month! Enjoy a light breakfast and learn as we play Healthy Heart
Bingo. Get cooking with the Baking Coach as we make and take home a delicious
heart healthy treat for Valentine’s Day while learning about the health benefits of dark
chocolate! Bring your questions and get answers at our Health and Wellness lecture
featuring Heart Health. Get fit and learn how to improve your balance and prevent falls
with a fitness expert, and indulge in our trip to the Brooklyn Museum for an insider’s
look at the Art of High-Heeled Shoes!
March:
March is National Nutrition Month! Fun, Food, and Facts return with a light breakfast
and Nutritional Bingo. The Baking Coach returns with a hands-on lesson for cooking
and eating healthy on a budget. Our Health & Wellness Series continues with Colorectal
Cancer Awareness. Cornell Coop will stop by to show us how to make celebrations
fun, healthy, and active. Then it’s time for our own celebration with our Open House,
including games, fitness demos, refreshments, and health tips! Then we are back on
the road with a trip to the famous Carnegie Hall and the United Nations for a guided
tour. We’ll finish the month with a Film Festival … sit back and enjoy one or all of these
fabulous films while enjoying some healthy snacks:
• Romeows (Retired Older Men Eating Out Wednesdays):
An award-winning film featuring Brooklyn on a plate; a moveable feast about
friendship, continuity, longevity, and brotherhood.
• Soul Food Junkies:
How the American culinary tradition of soul food began, to the present efforts to
cook healthier versions of these beloved foods while holding on to these traditions
rich with family history.
• Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work:
Follow a year in the life of the trailblazing comic, covering her entire career and her
relentless desire to keep working (and working) with humor. Wickedly funny and
surprisingly moving.

Annual preventive screenings are necessary for prevention
and early detection of disease. Screenings for colon
cancer, breast cancer, glaucoma, and coronary artery
disease among others should be performed each year. At

health and well-being of our members. Together with you
and your Doctor, we work as a team to manage your overall
health to help you reach your wellness goals. We will reach
out to you throughout the year to remind you of the tests
and screenings you will need.

Fall Prevention:
Take the right steps today to maintain independence for tomorrow
Sources: The National Council on Aging, Web MD & The New York Times
As the population lives longer, the number of older adults who fall and suffer
serious, even fatal, injuries is soaring. Every 15 seconds, an older adult goes
to the Emergency Room for a fall-related injury. 2.4 million people over the
age of 65 were treated in emergency rooms for falls in 2012, representing a
50% increase in falls over the previous decade. Researchers say there has also
been a rise in diseases linked to falls, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke,
arthritis, and parkinson’s. In some cases, the medication to treat the disease
can increase the risk of falling.
Stay safe with the following fall prevention tips:
• Find a good balance and exercise program – bring a friend!
• Talk to your Primary Care Physician to assess your risk of falling
• Regularly review your medications with your Primary Care
Physician or Pharmacist. Be mindful of side effects and take
medication only as prescribed
• Get your vision and hearing checked annually and update your
glasses
• Keep your home safe; remove tripping hazards, increase lighting,
and install grab bars in key areas, such as the bathroom
• Talk to your family and friends. Get the support of others to take
simple steps to stay safe
• Take your time ... more accidents occur when you are in a hurry
• Always wear well-fitting shoes (waterproof with a good rubber
tread in winter)
• Consider an emergency response system, particularly if you live
alone

Customer Service with a Smile
“As a Customer Service Representative, my job is to help the members first by
understanding their issue, and then putting together the pieces of the puzzle to resolve
it, follow up if necessary, and most importantly, explain it to the member. People can
be frustrated at times, and a bit of patience along with knowledge and follow up can
go a long way! We speak to about 50-70 members each day, and our goal is to resolve
their issue on the first call if possible. First impressions count!” – Theresa S.

a new opportunity of something we can share as a couple. The events are always exciting and newsworthy for our age
group, and the lectures are very informative. It’s good to get
out and interact with other people while reinforcing a healthy
message. I also enjoy working as an Ambassador.” – Lynette S.
