MCC addresses water quality, provides safe drinking water
MCC has taken aggressive steps in light
of the City of Flint water crisis to ensure
that employees, students and visitors to
the campus have safe drinking water while
they are at Mott. Monitoring, testing and
filtering of water has been taking place
throughout the main campus in Flint for
nearly two years now. In addition, sealed
bottled water, water filters and water test
kits have been made available to the entire
Mott campus community. A permanent
water filtration system has been installed
on the Flint campus that ensures the safety
and quality of the drinking water on campus, regardless of the source of the City of
Flint’s water.
Drinking water in the City of Flint was contaminated with lead starting in April 2014 when
the city, while under the control of a state-appointed emergency manager, switched the source
of supply from Lake Huron water supplied by
the City of Detroit to Flint River water. As a
result, lead leached from pipes and fixtures into
the drinking water and tests showed lead levels
spiked in the blood of some Flint children.
Although the city switched back to Detroit water
in October, officials have stated the potential for
harm continues with the tainted water containing dangerous levels of lead. MCC continues
to stand committed to ensuring the health and
safety of the campus and Flint community as it
grapples with the Flint water issue.
Mott vying for prestigious Aspen Award
Mott Community College is among five Michigan community colleges eligible for the 2017 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, a prestigious $1 million national award that recognizes two-year institutions that have
“demonstrated exceptional levels of student success.”
The list includes 150 colleges and MCC is among five institutions from Michigan considered for the Aspen
prize. The Michigan colleges up for the award are: Alpena Community College, Mott Community College, Delta
College, near Bay City; Schoolcraft College, in Livonia; and Wayne County Community College District in Detroit. The prize awarded every two years carries $1 million in funds. The finalists will be announced in Fall 2016.
MCC was named one of the Top Ten by the Aspen Institute in September 2011.
Schools are considered for the prize based upon their performance in four areas: student learning, certificate and
degree completion, employment and earnings, as well as access and success for low-income and minority students.
Nearly half of college students in the U.S. attend community colleges, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Aspen Institute.
Jimmy King received the Outstanding Volunteer
Fundraiser Award from the Association of Fundraising
Professionals (AFP) at their annual awards ceremony held
in November in Freeland, Mich. A member of the FMCC
Board of Directors and a former Mott College Trustee,
he is also an MCC Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.

Education Center. This is a state-of-the-art
fitness center providing MCC staff and
students with a wide range of activities,
including basketball, nutrition, first aid,
weight training, indoor climbing, self-defense, Pilates, social dance and more, via
courses that promote physical fitness and
health enrichment.
You can demonstrate your commitment to
MCC by supporting the Durham Wellness
& Physical Education Center, a valuable asset to the campus community. In addition to

will be enhancing the quality of life for countless individuals who will visit the center for
years to come.

Weight Training Zone This space contains a series of weight machines and free weights
that are used in the courses PEAC144 Weight Training Theory and Practice class and
PEAC101/102 Circuit Training classes. Sponsorship: $50,000
The Exercise Studio is being used for our
(PEAC145) Social Dance class and our
(PEAC147) Pilates Courses. It is an excellent area for these courses and students
appreciate having so much more appropriate
space to participate in. Sponsorship: $25,000
Multi-Purpose Zone A functional fitness
zone designed for courses such as Physical
Conditioning where space is designed for
functional/boot camp/calisthenic types of exercise, this area also serves as the location for
the Self Defense class. Sponsorship: $75,000
Cardio Zone This Cardio exercise space features top-of-the-line elliptical trainers and
treadmills for cardiovascular conditioning. Sponsorship: $25,000
“Smart Classrooms” are technologically enhanced classrooms equipped with a variety of
tools that can enhance the learning environment. Classroom Sponsorships: $20,000
The Training Tower This unique space has a combination of cardio and functional training
equipment and provides additional for current staff and students to use the facility. This
space is available for use at any time and enables members to work out even when there is
a class going on in other areas of the center. Sponsorship: $100,000

CS Mott Statue Project Nears Fundraising Goal
The MCC Alumni Association has partnered with the Back to the Bricks Automotive Pioneers
Statue Project to install a statue memorializing Charles Stewart Mott on the MCC main campus
in Flint. The group is finalizing a fund-raising effort for the statue now. If you’d like to be part of
creating a lasting legacy of C.S. Mott, you can make a donation today. Donations can also be made

MCC Alumni Association connects with alumni in the medical community
Community colleges play a major role in the education of health professionals who provide health care needs to the communities they serve.
And with more than 93% of MCC nursing graduates being employed within six months of graduation, it made perfect sense for the MCC
Alumni Association to connect with this special group of alumni.
For the second year, this outreach effort has included visits to area hospitals to connect with alums at receptions scheduled from 7 to 8:30 am;
11:30 am to 1 pm and 5 to 6:30 p.m. coinciding with the three shifts. MCC faculty, staff, alumni, and even current students participating in
their clinicals or internships, are invited to a reception to meet and greet fellow alums, as well as staff of The Foundation for Mott Community
College. As an added bonus, attendees have an opportunity to meet MCC President Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, who makes a point to visit one
of the shifts at each hospital to meet alumni.
“We recognize that a successful alumni outreach program entails connecting with students, past and present,” said Foundation for MCC President Lennetta Coney. “We want to fully engage alumni by reconnecting with them – wherever they are.”
Every alum attending these receptions is urged to provide their contact information for inclusion in the alumni registry. The names are entered
for a prize drawing. Refreshments are always provided. This event has proven to be largely successful in reaching alumni. A total of 54 attended the reception held at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, held Dec. 9, 2015; 98 attendees were present at Hurley Medical
Center reception on Jan. 15; and 54 attended the event at McLaren Regional Medical Center.
Pam Martin, ‘91 alum, was enrolled in the
1989-1991 nursing program at MCC. She
attended the alumni gathering at Genesys in
December. She is the winner of the Sagano
Japanese Bistro & Steakhouse gift card that
was included in the drawing held there.
