Welcome to our second publication of “The Pearl” newsletter! Did you hear me Sorors? Our second publication! God is so amazing and worthy to be praised for the wonderful works and bountiful blessings He continues to bestow upon our interest group. As members of our great sisterhood which is 260,000+ members strong, Madame Supreme Basileus—Soror Carolyn House Stewart and Madame Regional Director—Soror Constance R. Pizarro expects each and every one of us to carry the torch high for Global Leadership Through Timeless Service. My dear Sorors, it is with great pride to see that you are carrying the torch in the spirit of our group’s values: Excellence, Spirituality, and Compassion. Our programs of service continue to be successfully implemented with substance, doors to resources continue to open for us, our relationships amongst each other and with our Sorors in area chapters continue to blossom, and our families are growing and continue to be blessed beyond measure. Read about all of these highlights and more in this publication of “The Pearl”. When our group initially discussed the vision for “The Pearl”, we agreed each publication would be informative, evoke thought, and inspire excellence in each of our members. This has continued to be our focus. During our most recent creative meeting with Soror Annette Griffin, Editor-In-Chief, I asked her to dig deep in her talented mind and identify a topic that is very real for our members today. The goal was to highlight a theme of discussion that we can challenge each Soror to search her heart and reflect upon. It was also at that meeting where Soror Annette shared her personal experience in working with Soror Iyanla Vanzant’s show “Fix My Life”, and how that self intervention resulted successfully due to the love and support shown from Sorors. In Soror Annette’s words, “...it was my life defining sisterhood moment.” The truth? Every Soror has a life defining sisterhood moment! It is that vivid memory and personal experience that has shaped your heart for Alpha Kappa Alpha. I am speaking about those situations however loving, pleasant, unpleasant or otherwise that has affected how you truly see the organization. These defining moments have either grounded you through the years, kept you engaged or disengaged, brought you back to the sisterhood, or kept your love shining bright for Alpha Kappa Alpha. Since we are an interest group of over 80% of reclaimed Sorors, we thought this topic would be valuable. In this special edition of “The Pearl”, you will be blessed with true testimonials from your fellow Charm City Pearls on their personal sisterhood moments. Kindly note, every experience shared does not have the not warm and fuzzy theme—but a real experience for those Sorors and proved to be a milestone in their Alpha Kappa Alpha journey. All stories captured are designed to serve as a point of self reflection and to let Sorors know that many experiences in life are shared not hidden. May each heartfelt testimonial encourage, deliver, and strengthen your foundation in our organization. It’s a New Year Sorors! Let’s commit anew to greater service in East Baltimore City, build upon our sisterhood experiences and create new ones, and look forward towards a bright future. Enjoy!! [sis•ter•hood]: 1. unity and friendship among women 2. a deep bond based on eternal love and respect 3. solidarity and support for a lifetime 4. the foundation of a sorority. In partnership with the Female Intervention Team (FIT) of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, the IVY Prep Academy is designed to enhance the FIT platform by providing adjudicated female youth with mentoring, guidance, and support services. It is based upon five core competencies, 1) mental health, 2) physical health, 3) relationships, 4) education and 5) finance. Since the launch of the IVY Prep Academy, participants and their parents have attended multiple monthly workshops designed to support the development of the five core program competencies. Recent sessions covered topics such as Physical and Mental Health Wellness, Financial Management, Education and goal setting incorporating the use of Vision Maps. At the conclusion of each session healthy snacks were provided to all participants to encourage better eating. Bringing the 2013 operating year to a close, the Program Committee has reviewed the evaluations from each session to incorporate successes and lessons learned for 2014 programs. Well done Soror Ledonnis and the IVY Prep Academy team! CCP! Soror Ledonnis Hernandez IVY Prep Academy Program Chairman The Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) Program is one of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated’s national initiatives led by Madame Supreme Basileus, Soror Carolyn House Stewart. It gave us an opportunity to look back at our great history and look forward to the wonderful legacy that we are creating. The picture that I have chosen is of me and the late Mary Shy Scott, 23rd International President at the Significant South Atlantic Regional Conference. She epitomized “sisterhood at its best.” ~ Soror Kimberly Hankerson, CCP I love this picture. It was from one of my first Boules, Indianapolis 1994. I will always treasure this moment with our 23rd International President, Soror Mary Shy Scott. She was a consummate epitome of sisterly love, grace and leadership.” ~ Soror Tonja Eaton, CCP A dream becoming reality: The Directors of the nonprofit CALE Now! have a passion for service and experiencing the world. This common interest led us to join forces to start an organization with the mission to afford young people who would not otherwise have the means, the opportunity to learn about the world cultures and arts, build leadership skills and a sense of social responsibility, and to travel internationally so that they can create positive change on a global scale. Community work has strengthened our sisterhood bond . ~ Soror Kiahnna Patton, CCP On this day, my 20th AKAversary with my line sisters in 2010, I was reminded of what true sisterhood is about. Through our 20 years of being Alpha Kappa Alpha women, we may not have seen each other a lot due to Sorors moving, getting married, having children, building careers, and/or furthering educational goals. We even we lost one, sadly, to God's Heavenly gates. But on this day I was reminded that we will forever share a bond that no one else can ever share and that we took the Alpha Kappa Alpha journey TOGETHER. Through good and bad we did it TOGETHER. That will be with me forever because it was with them that I started my life in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. ~ Soror Roshonda Contee-Davis, CCP The picture I submitted is of Soror Lundi Carter and I sometime around 1999-2000. Lundi, pictured in the green sweater taught me the meaning of being connected to this sisterhood beyond "destinations" around the plot. We taught together, rode to work together when I did not have a car, and struggled through our Master's degree program together. We shared our struggles with growing into professionals as well as women. We shared hopes, fears, and struggles. More importantly for me, I trusted her with what means the most to me-my daughters! ~ Soror Robin Banks, CCP The Sisterhood Edition of “The Pearl” Newsletter— Issue 2 | PAGE 12 Feature Special Edition After completing my undergraduate studies, I moved to DC for a job opportunity at Claims Administration Corporation in Rockville, MD. I also quickly became a member of the Xi Omega Chapter in Washington, DC. My former graduate chapter, Lambda Omega, always impressed upon my entire undergraduate chapter the importance of service and continued financial obligation to move the sisterhood's targets, themes, and thrusts forward. I will never forget the first time I saw her in person. There she set on the front row of the Xi Omega Center. I could not believe my eyes. I was looking at "LIVING HISTORY". I was in the same room with the author of our History Books. I was in the same room with our 15th Supreme Basileus, Soror Marjorie Holloman Parker!! I remember that I went to my seat and cried like a baby. I could not believe my eyes. My heart was filled with joy, surprise and fear. WOW! I read about this woman of power. I studied her words and took them to heart. After I pulled myself together, I introduced myself. Her kinds eyes met mine and she gently said, “Hello Soror Sam.” I don't remember what happened next. I think I passed out. LOL Throughout the years, she took me under her wing. I truly understood why I wanted to become a member of this great sisterhood. She was a blessing to me. She was a blessing to the world. This picture was taken December 8, 1993 - The First Boyd/Ferebee Tribute Award sponsored by the Xi Omega Chapter. I was blessed to be one of the speakers that Beautiful day. ~ Soror Samantha RDL Richards, CCP A great defining moment! Being able to celebrate being a Soror with my mother and grandmother on a special day like my mother’s graduation. After she had struggled through my father’s illness and death, we were able to celebrate her finishing her doctorate degree. And, oh are we proud of that Soror ~ Soror Renata Sanders, CCP I remember the day I became an AKA. I was so excited as I finally accomplished what had been in my heart for a long time. After the luncheon, I saw some of my co-initiates huddled together outside of the venue. I ventured over to them as it appeared they were discussing something serious. When I arrived at their circle they immediately disbursed, as if I had brought some bad energy. Of course, this hurt my feelings tremendously because in my mind “we are sisters now.” I later found out that those Sorors were a part of a circle that I was not invited into. I was confused as to why I received that reaction. I cannot begin to tell you how hurt I was for years over that experience. I knew there had to be better, and it was not good for me to harbor such hurt. It wasn't until the Centennial Celebration (10 years later) when I decided to be active. I wanted to share the centennial experience with my mother who is also an AKA. The Centennial Boule was my first Boule, and I learned so much about our sisterhood and service. I recommitted myself to the organization at that conference. It was then that I finally realized that my commitment and our purpose was much bigger than a single experience, and it was expressed and shown to me that the sorority needs all of us. My experience in CCP has continued to build upon that momentum. I have learned so much with this group, and embraced more than I could ever imagine. I almost feel like I just became a Soror for the first time. I thank God for healing my heart. I am sure each of us will experience a moment or two of disappointment with a Soror, but it does not stop the show. I have matured greatly from that experience, and I love God for placing me in it. Today, I am a stronger and wiser Soror. Over the years I have learned it is the greater of our sisterhood, service and purpose that truly matters. ~ Soror Sweet Revelation, CCP The Sisterhood Edition of “The Pearl” Newsletter — Issue 2 | PAGE 13 Feature Special Edition I remember the day I left home to start my journey at Norfolk State University. It was a very hard and fearful day being that I was the first in my family to leave home and the first to go to college. Growing up my family did not have much so my mother could only afford to rent a van for a day to carry my things. We journeyed to Norfolk, Virginia and arrived at 4:45PM. If you attended an HBCU, you know there is no chance the administrative office will take time to service you at 4:45PM when the offices close at 5:00PM. My mother and sisters were very upset and were at a lost for what to do. The van was only rented for a day, and my mother couldn't afford a night’s stay at any hotel. My mother suggested that we take a ride around the city and get something to eat. We came across a hair salon close to the campus, and my mother suggested that we stop to view the establishment. For the life of me I didn't understand why my mother wanted to see this hair salon but Pastor Wilmer is a spirit-led woman so I went with the flow. Inside, we met the owner who shared she had a sister who worked at Norfolk State University. She called her sister who then agreed to come down to the salon. A half hour later this beautiful woman walks in with a pink suit and a big pink hat, and her husband who wore a “Bill Cosby sweater” and a Kangol hat. This is the day I met Dr. Bertha T. Escoffery and Dr. Aubrey Escoffery. They offered to take me in for the night, assist me in registering for classes, and to check me into the dorms. I was so surprised that my mother had peace about me going with this couple, but I guess the spirit was continuing to lead her. I couldn't believe this well-to-do couple wanted to spend time with little ‘ol Joan. They even took me to Wal-Mart that evening to purchase things that I did not have to ensure my preparedness for school. Dr. Bertha Escoffery secured a work study assignment for me in her office so I could have money for school (she was the Dean of International Studies). It was during my time working for her that I was exposed to Alpha Kappa Alpha, an organization I knew nothing about. Dr. Escoffery would even have me type her chapter reports. Iota Omega, the chapter she was/is a member of, provided me with multiple scholarships so I could stay in school, assisted me on buying my first suit, and gave me the confidence to be the AKA I am today. Dr. Escoffery, or should I say Soror Escoffery, was my Graduate Advisor. I tell many others my mother taught me a lot of things but I am also grateful for the leadership and confidence Dr. Escoffery and Iota Omega Sorors gifted me at the age of 17 and beyond. Through the years God continued to bless me with other Soror Angels/Mothers/Mentors; and, those Sorors who I have admired and watched from afar who helped to define my lifetime sisterhood moments. There is my co-initiates from the Delta Epsilon Chapter—Norfolk State University, my first course in Sisterhood 101. Soror Doris R. Asbury, Former Mid-Atlantic Regional Director who gave me my first regional leadership appointment and who taught me how to be fierce but classy. The late Soror Linda M. White, 26th Supreme Basileus who gave me my first international appointment and was another mother to me. Soror Erma Barron, Former North Atlantic Regional Director , my trusted moment of truth when I needed it the most. Soror C. Edith Booker, Former North Atlantic Regional Director, a leadership trainer especially on the topic of resilient leadership. Soror Mary Conner, my Soror-mentor and praying mother who makes sure I am always taken care of from day to day. Soror Mattelia B. Grays, 18th Supreme Basileus, the one who puts the “P” in passion and protocol. Soror Eva L. Evans, 24th Supreme Basileus, excellent teacher of sisterly grace. Soror Ayisha Dabre and Soror Michelle Dawson, my best Soror friends forever (enough said). And Soror Norma S. White, 25th Supreme Basileus (whom I believe Soror Linda sent from heaven to me) my voice of reason, Rock Star, and cheerleader who encourages me to blaze new trails. It is because of them that I work so hard for our service and sisterhood. At my highs and my lows they continue to pour into me and they are the queens of the phrase “never give up!” I will always appreciate how they have and continue to bless my life and will forever be grateful for their nurturing love and honest support. They are the epitome of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s beauty and leadership power. ~ Soror Joan Wilmer-Stewart, CCP The Sisterhood Edition of “The Pearl” Newsletter — Issue 2 | PAGE 14 Feature Special Edition You Never Know Your Soror’s Story: by Soror Annette Griffin As Black Women, we manage to exhibit strength at all times. Our marriage could be crumbling but we smile in the midst of the pain. We could have lost a loved one but we still know how to share a laugh. We may have lost our jobs but we still try our best to provide for our families. We have learned how to do it all no matter what is going on in our world. We have also learned how NOT to talk about the stuff that affects us. My mother’s generation was taught to go to the grave with family secrets. Talking about them made you face them and what was the point in that? When my mom, sister and I filmed, “Fix My Broken Mom” in February 2013, we did not know what we were getting into. We knew that my mom had been holding back and did not want to share about her childhood, which was the reason why we wrote to the show. Talking to her was like talking to a brick wall… we got nowhere, fast! But my sister and I longed to have a better relationship with our mother, even if we had to go through pain to experience joy. Through the process, we learned that while our mother allowed us to be physically, mentally, verbally and emotionally abused, she was sexually abused by a close family friend. She learned how not to be a mother because my grandmother was not a mother to her. Pathology! I had no idea that my mom went through something like that. My mom’s confession birthed compassion in my heart. I saw her in a different light. I looked at her through a different lens. My resentment turned into sadness and sympathy. I never would have known her story if we hadn’t gone through this process. Sorors, you never know your Soror’s story. You do not know what their childhood was like. You do not know what it took for them to make it to a meeting. You do not what they have waiting for them once they leave. Our meetings and sisterly relations may be the only time that they laugh and smile. A hug from a Soror may be the only time they feel loved. A thank you from a Soror may be the only time they feel appreciated. A text message checking on them may be the only time they feel like someone thought of them. Before you start to judge a Soror or be upset by her actions, say a prayer and ask God to check you and soften your heart. Ask Him to give you more patience. If you know of a Soror in need, ask God to increase the compassion on your heart so that you can do your part to help her. We help each other for we know there is no other like our Sisterhood! Sorors, let’s do better! Let’s be better! Let’s act better! Let’s exhibit excellence, spirituality and compassion at all time! We are all blessed. Let’s take time to be a better Soror to our Sorors. We are sisters in Christ first. Let our actions always show the love that our Lord and Savior shows to us even when we do not deserve it. My big sister, Kimberly is more than my sister and Soror. She is the only person on this earth who understands me. She was the only person who was there during the roughest part of life. She is my angel and the other half of my heart. ~ Soror Annette Griffin, CCP **************************************************************************************************************************** The Sisterhood Edition of “The Pearl” Newsletter — Issue 2 | PAGE 15 Feature Special Edition This is a picture of my co-initiates (not all pictured) celebrating 1 year of being in the sisterhood - toooo excited! I just want to use this quote. I love these girls and honestly some I couldn't imagine not living without :-) The quote sums us up because we have to work on our bond EVERY DAY.. and "some" of us do. 5-TPO-08 "I don't believe an accident of birth makes people sisters or brothers. It makes them siblings, gives them mutuality of parentage. Sisterhood and brotherhood is a condition people have to work at." ~ Maya Angelou. ~ Soror Jala McClelland, CCP In the summer of 2009, God allowed me to go through a storm that I thought would honestly turn my world upside down. I had decided to close a private practice that I had dreamed of starting. It was a difficult time for many reasons. It produced fear, doubt, and many, many, feelings of defeat. Soror Joan Wilmer-Stewart, a Soror with a huge heart, would oftentimes call to offer words of support, encouragement, motivation, and simply put......sisterly love. One day, I was feeling quite low and Soror Joan called requesting I meet her for an afternoon outing. Not feeling my best, I expectedly declined. She insisted I change my mind because of the emotional place I was in at that very moment. I continued to respectfully decline. She became so adamant that her next message was "Either you come willingly or I will be there to pick you up shortly". I gave in and said yes!! I was summoned to a salon for a manicure and pedicure. When I got there, in addition to Soror Joan there was another Soror there. I didn't think anything of it. Well, about 10 minutes later, another Soror appeared and then another and then in comes a member of Delta Sigma Theta. Then, Soror Joan's phone started ringing but the calls were for me. On the other end were mutual friends offering uplifting words and laughter who informed me they couldn't "make it", but wanted to let me know they were in my corner. All of this was arranged by Soror Joan for the mere purpose of supporting her fellow Soror who was at a low point. I went home that evening in total amazement and with extreme validation that I joined the right Sorority; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated!! We sing........."we help each other", but Soror Joan demonstrated that for me to the nth degree. I often share this story when I speak about the sisterliness of AKA because it has been forever etched in my heart and spirit. As a result of her loving outreach, I was able to remain hopeful and gain confidence daily. It sure helps when you know someone has your back!! Thank you Soror Joan Wilmer-Stewart for demonstrating the love of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. ~ Soror Roshonda Contee-Davis, CCP The Sisterhood Edition of “The Pearl” Newsletter — Issue 2 | PAGE 16 Feature Special Edition The Vine of Sisterhood: by Soror Jala McClelland I started thinking about what those three points on the ivy meant to all of us as Sorors and why founder Soror Ethel Hedgeman Lyle chose it. Of course what do we know of the ivy leaf is that it’s an “ornamental” plant and it makes things look “pretty”. The most common thing that we know of the ivy is that it clings together and attaches itself to surfaces. It’s also a very strong plant, can withstand the harshest of winters, doesn’t need much sunlight to grow and can live to a considerable age. Our Sisterhood, demands us to cling to each other, we have withstood the harshest of storms and yet even in absence of light, the sisterhood amongst each has continued to grow. We are doing this all while still continuing to be “pretty”. Yes the ivy leaf will fool you if you aren’t on your toes. It’s definitely not just a pretty plant to look at because there is a dark side to the ivy. It’s considered an “invasive” plant. If left unchecked, it can be an aggressive invader and will threaten vegetation levels, it will block sunlight from reaching other plants. The vines will climb up tree trunks, and cover trunks and branches and can literally strangle a tree to death within years. The weight of the vines can make infested trees weak and susceptible to blow over during storms. Sorors, let’s not allow our own personal agendas, attitudes, and other negative behavior, allow the “dark side” of the ivy to penetrate our sisterhood. Let’s all be the “ivies” we were called, challenged and were meant to be. Let’s not forget the three points of the ivy we vowed to uphold. Remembering the badge we wear closest to our hearts...... Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of anyone else.. it was just something on my heart. The Sisterhood Edition of “The Pearl” Newsletter — Issue 2 | PAGE 17 Feature Special Edition In search of that moment: by Soror Candace Y.A. Montague (guest writer) I wish I could say that I have had a single defining lifetime sisterhood moment but it hasn’t occurred just yet. That’s not a dig against my chapter, co-initiates, or the women who brought me into the sisterhood. I just cannot narrow it down to one experience. Alpha Kappa Alpha has introduced me to some amazing Black women. These sorors are so wonderful that I can honestly say that if we weren’t sorors we would still be very close friends. I have spent numerous hours serving the community in ways that have left me relishing in joy for days. Still singling out a moment or experience in time that pinpointed my commitment to this illustrious sisterhood escapes me. Perhaps I am not the only one who feels this way. Many of our lost pearls have become disconnected from the ivy vine and need a little help with this question. So how does one identify the lifetime sisterhood moment? There are few possible scenarios for this. The moment during a chapter meeting or conference when you look up and know that that you are exactly where you are supposed to be. The time you realize you simply can’t serve another organization with such enthusiasm and energy the way you do Alpha Kappa Alpha. It could be that moment when you realized that there is someone who had your back when the world showed you theirs. Maybe it’s the time when someone in the sorority hurt you and yet you found the strength to not only forgive that soror but to continue stand by and defend this sisterhood regardless. Ahhh…..this sorority of ours is unique, isn’t it? You never know what moment will make the difference for you. The defining moment has not yet revealed itself to me but I am a patient woman. Alpha Kappa Alpha, the greatest sisterhood in the universe, is worth the wait. Maybe I’m the lucky one. I have many years of defining moments ahead of me. I have a feeling that the best is yet to come. Soror Candace Y.A.
