the First Annual
SMART Teacher
Conference, Europe!
You were selected to attend the conference because of your enthusiasm for
teaching, your innovative approach for improving student learning and your
effective use of SMART products. We look forward to getting to know you
over the next four days.
The goal of the conference is to facilitate the open exchange of ideas and
information. We hope to capture your perspectives, insights and feedback
to help us improve our products and services. In return, we look forward
to providing you with some great ideas for using tools and technology to
improve learning outcomes.
During the conference you will do the following:
• Receive professional development on SMART products, including
the SMART BoardTM interactive whiteboard and SMART IdeasTM
concept-mapping software
• Share your ideas and experiences with other educators and SMART
• Provide feedback on our products, services and resources
• Develop contacts and relationships with SMART as well as with other
enthusiastic educators
• Work on a collaborative project with other educators who teach in your
grade level. The project will be posted on SMART’s education website
education.smarttech.com.

Elizabeth Di Carlo, Madrid, Spain

Elizabeth was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but has been residing in Spain
for the last two and a half years. She has been teaching for twenty years. She
has a teaching degree from Buenos Aires University and a master's degree in
educational technology. She is currently completing her PhD in teaching at the
Spanish Open University.
Elizabeth also trains teachers on the use of education technology, including the
SMART Board interactive whiteboard.
Jose Dulac, Madrid, Spain

Jose has a master's degree in using computers in education with Universidad
Nacional de Educación a Distancia. He has been teaching for the last twentyseven years and has been the head teacher at Spanish schools for the last
eighteen years. He has taught children ranging from three to twelve years old.
Recently, he has begun teaching others on how to use ICT. He has designed
two courses on how to use the SMART Board interactive whiteboard and
participates in the Iberian Research Project.
Cristina Alaconda Fernandez, Madrid, Spain

Cristina has been teaching for twenty-seven years and is currently the female
leader of studies at her school. Her focus is on the primary level. She trains
others at her school to effectively use ICT and has participated in two courses on
how to use the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. She also collaborates on
the Iberian Research Project about SMART Board interactive whiteboards.

Elke is 37 years old. She studied to be a special needs teacher in Würzburg,
Germany. She now lives near Augsburg, Bavaria, and teaches grades one and
two at Förderzentrum, a school for learning-disabled children.

Milan Hausner, Prague, Czech Republic

Milan is the principal of the Junior Language School in Prague, Czech Republic.
In this role, he has led Czech schools in the implementation of ICT in education. He
is the administrator of www.veskole.cz – the Czech Republic’s portal for interactive
whiteboard users – and is head of the Centre for Further Studies of School
Management, IWB advisory services. The Junior Language School became one of
Microsoft's best business solutions in 2005 and will be quoted in official Microsoft
brochures. Milan has written more than 400 articles about ICT in education and is
the supervisor for DK software localization and an expert for ECML.
Lars Jensen, Aabenraa, Denmark

Lars is 33 years old and lives in a small town near Aabenraa, Denmark, 21 km
from the German border.
After finishing high school, Lars apprenticed to become a mechanical electrician.
After four years, he decided that it was time to move on. In 2000, he finished
his teaching degree and began teaching grades one to nine in math, biology,
chemistry and physics at Rugkobbelskolen in Aabenraa.
In the upcoming school year, Lars will be instructing his colleagues on the use of
the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. He also works as a free-lancer for Dansk
Data Display, where he teaches and instructs for other schools and institutions.
Jane Gordon, London, England ([email protected])
My name is Jane Gordon and I am currently a Secondary ICT consultant working
with 15 secondary schools.
There are two main components to my job. Firstly, I work with ICT teachers,
supporting teaching and learning in the classroom, and I work on lesson planning
and assessment. Secondly, I work with all other subjects in secondary schools to
help them develop the use of ICT. This is where I have done a lot of work with the
SMART Board interactive whiteboard particularly in English, maths and science.
I have recently moved house and have spent a lot of time renovating it with my
partner Peter and my children Sarah, 15, and Freddie, 12.

Teddy Kjendlie, Oslo, Norway
([email protected])
Teddy teaches beginner Norwegian and ICT at a junior high school in Oslo,
Norway. He has a BA in English, social anthropology and pedagogy. Teddy has
been using a SMART Board interactive whiteboard for four years and instructs
other teachers on how to use basic ICT.
Teddy's hobbies are ICT and politics. He is the chairman of the local district board
and is married with three children. He is really looking forward to meeting other
SMART teachers and learning more about how to use the SMART Board
interactive whiteboard in the classroom.
Werner Kundmuller, Ingolstadt, Germany

Werner has been a teacher of English and geography for over 25 years. He
currently holds the position of head of geography at the Christoph-ScheinerGymnasium in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. He speaks fluent English and
German.
His interests include photography, politics, big band music, cooking, hiking and
taking part in school-related activities.
Morten Linseth, Bronnoysund, Norway

Morten teaches math, biology, ICT and social studies at RKK Sør-Helgeland in
Bronnoysund, Norway. He also works as a leader at the regional competence
development office for people employed by the municipality, including teachers.
He and his wife, Brita, have a 14-year-old son named Magnus. In his spare time,
Morten likes to fish in the sea and hike in the beautiful mountains of Norway.
Marko Hypponen, Imatra, Finland

Marko is a 36-year-old primary school teacher at Rajapatsaan koulu/Savikannan
toimipiste in Imatra, Finland. He has been teaching since 1995. Since 2000, he
has acted as a computer-related advisor and trainer for teachers in all schools of
Imatra. He currently divides his time between teaching 7- to 15-year-old students
and training other teachers on how to effectively use technology.

Sari Louhikallio-Fomin, Siilinjarvi, Finland ([email protected])
Sari is a cheerful and social 35-year-old teacher. Her hobbies include dancing, skiing,
skating, gardening and needlework. She and her husband, Jukka, have a three-yearold son named Eetu. They live in Siilinjärvi, which has a population of 20,000.
Sari teaches mathematics in the upper secondary school of Siilinjärvi. She has taught
mathematics (and a little bit of physics and chemistry) for about ten years. She likes
to use multiple teaching methods to motivate her students and improve student
outcomes. She enjoys working with young people and training other teachers.
Antonio Silva, Arrabal, Portugal

Antonio teaches English and Portuguese in the Secondary School of Batalha. He
also works on ICT projects and training for the education market in the
Competence Centre Entre Mar e Serra. He has conducted training on webquests
in the classroom, production of Web pages for classroom purposes, and teaching
and learning with SMART Board interactive whiteboards. He has also participated
in the project "AprenderconSMART" (Learn with SMART) which deals with the
introduction of SMART Board interactive whiteboards in Portuguese classrooms.
Dennis McSweeney, Dublin, Ireland

Dennis is the head teacher at a small private school (270 pupils, 3 to 12 years
old) called Castle Park School in Dublin, Ireland. He moved to Ireland from
London last January. Although he is Irish, he spent the last 20 years teaching in
the independent prep sector in the UK. In his last school, interactive whiteboard
technology was used throughout the school from ages 3 to 18 to extend
teaching and learning in all subject areas. He is now embarking on a project to
set up a school of exemplary practice in the use of interactive technology at his
new school in Dublin.
Karlheinz Seefeld, Thalmassing, Germany

Karlheinz lives in a small village in the countryside about 120 km away from
München, the Bavarian capital. He has been teaching for more than 25 years at a
German school called Volksschule Thalmässing. He teaches all subjects to students
from grade one to grade nine. He is also responsible for the school computer

Donna Varney, Manchester, England

Donna was born in Leicester, United Kingdom. She is the eldest of three. At 19,
she moved to the city of 'MAD'chester, attending Manchester Polytechnic for
four years. In 1993, she graduated with a 2.1 BEd honours degree, specializing
in geography. From1993 until 2002, she worked as a classroom teacher in a
large inner city, multicultural primary school in Manchester. She later became a
P.E. Coordinator then a ICT Coordinator. In September 2002, she was seconded
to Manchester LEA, where she continues to work as Primary ICT Consultant. Her
roles include the coordination of a year two and three interactive whiteboard
pilot and a DfES interactive whiteboard expansion project.
Karen Burkle, Frankfurt, Germany

Karen Burkle was born in the United States, but she is of German nationality
and currently resides in Frankfurt, Germany. She completed her first state
examination at the University of Bielefeld and second state examination at
Borken/Hessen. She has been teaching boys and girls (6 to 10 years of age)
at the Lauterbornschule public primary school in Offenbach since 1992.
Marlene Weber, Karlsruhe, Germany

Marlene is a 21-year-old student at the University of Education in Karlsruhe.
She is studying English and German to become a primary school teacher in the
near future. Currently, she is working on an Internet project for a primary
school. She is looking forward to meeting everyone.
