THE SUCCEEDER October - November 2011 Issue No. 4 To start CEED got financial support from Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Cumberland Community Foundation, Florence Rogers Trust, Council on Status of Women and the Episcopal Church. After four months of being opened, more than 50 women came or called the center. What’s happening at CEED Students from the technology class of FSU's Communications’ department have been at CEED searching its archives for the material that will illustrate the printed and electronic materials to promote CEED’s 272 activities. CEED's Small Business Expo is good to go. Forty nine vendors have registered t o p a r t i c i p at e, w i t h 3 5 running in the Race for Excellence. Participants of the race have been publicizing the event through their own w e b s i t e s, s o c i a l m e d i a , distribution lists, store fronts and all the other resources they have found to promote the event. Through the race, the vendors of the expo who have registered to participate will demonstrate their excellence in all they do. The winner will win $1,000 in prizes including cash. As part of the Small Business Expo, the Center launched the Seal for Excellence concept with the first Race for Excellence, a concept to be implemented within the organization and among small business owners with the goal to help them increase staff productivity, business effectiveness and professionalism. SUCCESS STORIES Willene and Jeremiah Cotten started their business by setting up a five year plan. The Cottens received assistance from the business center in reviewing their business plan and securing financing for their venture in 2006. For Your Glory Beauty Salon opened in October in Spring Lake. Willene and Jeremiah believe their location has been key to their business' success. Willene currently manages the business fulltime. CEED’s mission is to provide resources and advocacy to individuals and families in order to restore personal dignity for economic empowerment and development. In 2007, Shundra Franklin was living in a mobile home where the neighborhood was getting out of hand, and she was concerned about her teenage child. She got a home with the assistance of Lease to Home. She's on track to earn her bachelor’s degree in birth through kindergarten education with a minor in social work from FSU. Keicia Owens found herself suddenly without an income, which motivated her to redirect her career. She chose the medical field and s u c c e s s f u l l y c o m p l e t e d t w o semesters of the Registered Medical Assistant program at FTCC. New Choices helped Keicia by paying for the class, uniforms, shoes, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and her books. Now she is working for a pediatrician. The whole process took about 10 months. PARTNER OF THE MONTH Fayetteville State University, FSU, has partnered with CEED to develop a marketing project with the senior students of the university's communications school. Todd Frobish and Melissa Lyon have been very instrumental in this process. The project will consolidate electronic and printed material from CEED's 120 orientation sessions, 149 workshops, two expos and its major fundraising events. BOARD MEMBER OF THE MONTH Thank you to our board member and treasurer Suzy Hrabovsky, who has been instrumental in assisting the Center with our new website and in her continued service as treasurer.
