ARSHA VIDYA PITHAM (Institute of Vedanta, Sanskrit, Meditation and Yoga) Year 2016 Programs Gone from our Sight, but never from our Hearts... “There is nothing equal to knowledge.” BhagavadgÌtË 4.38 2 Message from Pujya Sri Swamiji Swami Dayananda Saraswati 1930 - 2015 “Everything is the limitless Brahman, so, when you praise the guru, the human element is completely absorbed in the total. You either relegate the human element to the background, or you absorb it into the total. It is the total that is worshiped. In that way, the guru, the person with human body who teaches, becomes a kind of an altar of worship, but what is being invoked is the Lord.” –– Pujya Sri Swami Dayananda 2016 Arsha Vidya Pitham Programs & Special Events 3 Jan 1 New Year's Day Celebration Feb 12-15 Presidents’ Day or Winter Course Swami Pratyagbodhananda, Dhruva-stuti....................................................... 5 March 7 MahËÚivarËtri Celebration March 25-27 Easter Weekend Family Vedanta Course Swami Pratyagbodhananda, SËdhana-paÕcakam............................................ 5 May 27-30 Memorial Day Weekend Family Vedanta Course Swami Viditatmananda, SiddhiÑ vindati mËnavaÒ (BG 18:46)........................ 5 July 1-4 Independence Day Vedanta Course Swami Viditatmananda, Na me bhaktaÒ praÙaÚyati (BG 9:31)........................ 6 July 10-16 BÎhadËraÙyaka-bhËÛyam Course (continued) Swami Viditatmananda.................................................................................. 6.. Though the BhËgavatam contains many such hymns of adoration, this stuti has a distinctive status in that it not only presents bhakti in its most sublime form, but also inquires into the teachings of Vedanta. Swamiji will unfold the glory of this stuti. March 25-27 (Fri-Sun) Easter Weekend Family Vedanta Course Swami Pratyagbodhananda SËdhana-paÕcakam Through five compelling verses, ¼di Shankaracarya delineates the means of attaining that which every human being is relentlessly seeking, knowingly or otherwise—absolute freedom, mokÛa, which is the knowledge that ËtmË, the self, is Brahman, the cause of all. The ¼cËrya stipulates the study of the Vedas; satsaÔga; contemplation on the teachings of the UpaniÛads; sustenance of the body with essentials; and a life of solitude to facilitate the attainment of the goal. Swamiji will lead the students on this crucial journey of life. May 27-30 (Fri-Mon) Memorial Day Weekend Family Vedanta Course Swami Viditatmananda SiddhiÑ vindati mËnavaÒ BhagavadgÌtË 18:46 The significant factor conveyed in this verse is that one who worships BhagavËn by doing one’s duty with a proper attitude achieves success— the preparedness for knowledge of BhagavËn. How does an individual remain true to his or her chosen vocation or responsibilities without succumbing to the endless choices and allurements of the world? What gain accrues to the person by this kind of worship? Swamiji will unfold the verse in detail. 6 Summer VedËnta Programs 2016 July 10-16 (Sun-Sat) BhËÛyam Course BÎhadËraÙyaka-bhËÛyam (1:4:11-19; 1:5:1-3; 1:5:16-23) Swami Viditatmananda In its memorable maxims, the UpaniÛad asserts the inherent identity of the self with Brahman, the cause of all. Among the profound messages of the text include various factors that lead one to such an understanding of the changeless and changing aspects of the Creator, the creation of various social classes, dharma which brings them together, and the son’s role in spiritual life. In these sessions, Swamiji will elaborate on these topics and bring out the essence of the teaching. July 1-4 (Fri-Mon) Independence Day Weekend Vedanta Course Swami Viditatmananda Na me bhaktaÒ praÙaÚyati BhagavadgÌtË 9:31 BhagavËn Krishna’s words are ‘my devotee never gets destroyed’. What is the criterion for such a bhakta? The verse cites conformity to a life of dharma as a decisive factor that eventually leads one to the understanding of ½Úvara and the order that is ½Úvara. With clarity in this understanding, one gains eternal ÚËnti, peace, which is the nature of ËtmË. Swamiji will focus on the constituents of a dharmic life. July 10-16 (Sun-Sat) Children’s Vedic Course – 1 (Age 9-12. Unaccompanied by parents) July 17-23 (Sun-Sat) Children’s Vedic Course – 2 (Age 9-12. Unaccompanied by parents) July 17-23 (Sun-Sat) Family Vedanta Course I Swami Viditatmananda VivekachÍ×ËmaÙi (Verse 192 onwards) Meaningfully called the ‘Crest Jewel of Discrimination,’ the text addresses seekers desirous of the ultimate freedom, mokÛa. It refers to the inability to discriminate between the timeless and time-bound as the delusion caused by avidyË, ignorance, which keeps one 2016 Summer VedËnta Programs 7 bound to saÑsËra, the cycle of birth and death and a life of becoming. Swamiji will unravel the nature of avidyË and the ways to overcome it. July 24-30 (Sun-Sat) Family Vedanta Course – II Swami Viditatmananda MuÙ×akopaniÛad 2:1:1 BhagavadgÌtË 7:1 One of the important themes of the MuÙ×akopaniÛad is the attempt to define the indefinable. Citing the emergence of sparks from the blazing fire and their plunge into the same fire as an example, this verse brings to the forefront the non-separateness of the world from its ultimate cause and point of resolution—Brahman. Swamiji will elaborate on the implication of this teaching. In chapters 7-12 of the BhagavadgÌtË, the word ‘tat’ in the mahËvËkya, tat tvam asi, is the predominant topic. In seeking to know that ‘tat’, the infinite, Lord Krishna exhorts Arjuna to surrender his mind unto him totally. Does that imply that the end and the means are one and the same? Swamiji will address the significance of the implication. Swami Pratyagbodhananda Kunti-stuti (ÉrÌmad BhËgavatam 1:8) At the conclusion of the great MahËbhËrata war, when Sri Krishna decides to part from the Pandavas, Kunti’s spontaneous outpourings not only reveal her deep philosophical wisdom but also glorify her devout love for Sri Krishna. Prayerfully, she appeals to Sri Krishna to grant her the ability to keep her mind on him alone and to let it flow towards him like the Ganges flows towards the ocean. Swamiji will take the illuminating bhakti and astuteness of Kunti devi to their sublime level. July 31-Aug 6 (Sun-Sat) Family Vedanta Course – III Swami Viditatmananda KaÖhopaniÛad 1:3:1 BhagavadgÌtË 7:1 (Continued) An exposition of the nature of the self, the spiritual essence of our being, as the ultimate reality of all existence is taught in these KaÖhopaniÛad verses. The UpaniÛad elaborates on the great mahËvËkya ‘ayam ËtmË brahma’ revealing the fact that the self within and without – self in man and self that pervades the universe – are one and the same. Swamiji will clarify the full import of this profound declaration. 8 Children's Courses 2016 Children's Vedic Course I - July 10-16 Sun-Sat Unaccompanied by Parents (Ages 9-12) Children's Vedic Course II - July 17-23 Sun-Sat Unaccompanied by Parents (Ages 9-16) Children love the Gurukulam’s retreats, packed with lively interactive classes based on Vedic heritage, religion, culture, universal values, and group discussion. Vedic chanting, yoga, drama, arts and crafts, games, and a nightly campfire are also very popular with the kids. The highlight of the camp is the finale, the cultural program, in which Savithri Mani, assisted by Radha and Girija Srinivasan showcases Savithri Mani the considerable talents of all the children. Children in this retreat join the children’s program of the family retreats offered during the same time period. Counselors will care for children, 9 years and older, not accompanied by their parents. 2016 Summer and Fall VedËnta Programs Swami Pratyagbodhananda NËrada-bhakti-sÍtra (Selected verses) Devarishi Narada was bhakti incarnate and propounded the tenet of unswerving bhakti of BhagavËn. It is no wonder that the sÍtras, aphorisms, in this lucid treatise are suffused with bhakti. The sentiment of devotion tugs at the hearts of aspirants given to a life of devotion totally. Devarishi elucidates the nature of such ineffable devotion, the method to ascend such an altar of piety and finally its consummation in paramaprema, the ultimate vision of oneness. Swamiji will take up selected verses and make them come alive. 9 Aug 17-20 (Wed-Sat) PÍrÙa-vidyË Teachers Training Course How does one instill the values of Indian culture in our children growing up here? Religious culture, which touches every aspect of one’s life, was imbibed by osmosis from one’s home and the immediate community. However, here the situation is different. To cultivate and understand the values and attitudes, the Vaidika vision and view of life has to be taught to the children in a structured way. Pujya Sri Swami Dayanandaji said, “The youth need to discover their roots, trunks, branches, flowers, et al.” The PÍrÙa-vidyË Teachers Training Course is a commitment to leading the children to that discovery. Aug 25-28 (Thu-Sun) Patrons’ Vedanta Course – I Swami Tattvavidananda GuÙa-svarÍpa BhagavadgÌtË – Chapter14 August 7-12 (Sun-Fri) Swami Tadatmananda DÎg-DÎÚya-Viveka (Part I) With unparalleled clarity, this celebrated text (attributed by some to ÉrÌ ÉaÔkara) unfolds the nature of the awareful witness (sËkshi), leading the student to discover one's true nature as unchanging, limitless consciousness (sat-cit-Ënanda). Swamiji will also conduct guided meditations based on the text to aid in the assimilation of these teachings. The three guÙas, qualities—sattva, rajas, tamas—are certain phenomena, which comprise prakÎti’s very svarÍpa, nature, and therefore their expressions manifest in creation. GuÙas are impelling forces that create actions, which give rise to various experiences in life. Due to erroneous knowledge, the guÙas seemingly bind an individual. Why seemingly? What are the dynamics of such bondage? Swamiji will present the distinctiveness of the three guÙas and how they affect a person’s thought, word and deed. 10 Fall VedËnta Programs 2016 Swami Pratyagbodhananda VÎtËsura catuÒ-ÚlokÌ ÉrÌmad BhËgavatam 6:11 Swami Pratyagbodhananda The story goes that on hearing of his son Vishvarupa’s beheading by Indra, an enraged Sage Tvasta performed a fire ritual to avenge the misdeed. VÎtËsura emerged from the fire. Sri Krishna, knowing him to be his staunch devotee said, “A true devotee who hankers for me will come to me.” And so, dying at the hands of Indra, VÎtËsura’s yearning to attain BhagavËn finds fulfillment. While the first three Úlokas find expression for his pristine devotion, the final one gives emphasis to the glory of satsang with BhagavËn’s bhaktas. Swamiji will describe the beauty in these devotional Úlokas. ÉrÌmad BhËgavata PurËÙa presents not only an extraordinary portrayal of bhakti, devotion, which finds its consummation in Sri Krishna, but also reveals the teachings of Vedanta. The opening verse eulogizes BhagavËn as the absolute truth, the primeval cause of creation, by whom even the great sages and demigods are placed into illusion, as the one who is luminous by his own splendor. Swamiji will explain all aspects of this auspicious verse of praise in detail. Sept 2-5 (Fri-Mon) Patrons’ Vedanta Course – II Swami Tattvavidananda GuÙËtÌta (BhagavadgÌtË - Chapter 14) When Sri Krishna says that the one who rises above the binding influences of the three guÙas is a guÙËtÌta and that he gains immortality, Arjuna’s interest perks up and he asks Sri Krishna to enlighten him about the means to transcend the guÙas. When one goes beyond the three guÙas, what are the defining characteristics and spontaneous expressions of such a person? Swamiji will delve into these and other pertinent questions and bring out revealing answers. MaÔgalËcaraÙa Úloka ÉrÌmad BhËgavatam Sept. 7-14 (Wed-Wed) Yoga and Sound Ramanad Patel & Pandit Mukesh Desai Swami Tattvavidananda PataÕjali’s Yoga-sÍtra SËdhana pËda – 2 (Selected sÍtras) SËdhana pËda defines the system of kriyË-yoga and the first five components of the eight-limbed aÛÖËÔga-yoga. KriyË-yoga, known as the yoga of practices, talks about self discipline, study of scriptures, and surrender unto God, which culminate in the purity of mind. While the modus operandi of hatha-yoga can be helpful to develop a healthy body, all authentic yoga revolves around the doctrine of liberation. PataÕjali presents various techniques to usher the mind into a state of serenity and thus overcome the 2016 Fall VedËnta Programs impediments to freedom or spiritual self-realization. Swamiji will define various aspects of this sËdhana. Sept 17-24 (Sat-Sat) One-week Vedanta Course for Adults Swami Tattvavidananda Sat-darÚanam The central point in Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi’s teaching is the need for persistent inquiry into the source of the ‘I’-thought or ego. Sat-darÚanam is a most lucid elucidation of the nature of the ‘I’-thought. The text opens the door to the removal of all contradictions and doubts that cloud the understanding of one’s essential nature. Swamiji will describe the method of tracing the ‘I’ to its source and its outcome. Swami Pratyagbodhananda MuÙ×akopaniÛad 3:1 The enlightening allegory of two birds on a tree, symbolizing the ego and the self, is illustrated in this verse. A devoted study of this will unearth the entire gamut of saÑsËra that holds human beings hostage, revealing that knowledge of the self empowers one to deal with the trials and tribulations of life with equanimity. Swamiji will bring out the enriching principles underlying the metaphor. 11 Sept 25-Oct 07 (Sun-Fri) Two-week Vedanta Course for Adults Swami Tattvavidananda BhagavadgÌtË- Chapter 17 with ÉËÔkara-bhËÛyam The word ‘ÚraddhË’ in this chapter is looked upon as not merely faith but as the whole person; not a belief system but the attitude towards life; it is one’s thinking, understanding, value structure and priorities. ÉrÌ Shankaracarya delves deeply and analyzes the shades of differences in the nature of ÚraddhË, the determining factors for the type of ÚraddhË one will have, their ramifications, and so on. Swamiji will unfold this insightful vision of the BhagavadgÌtË exhaustively. Swami Pratyagbodhananda Éiva-mahiÑna-stotram In devotion, and loftiness of thought Éiva-mahiÑna-stotram, hymn on the greatness of Lord Shiva, is said to be incomparable in Sanskrit literature. Being infinite, the glories of Lord Shiva are beyond the comprehension of human beings. Therefore, no prayer or hymn can do justice to the Lord. Verse 32 gives veracity to this fact in saying, “… if Goddess Saraswati writes for eternity, even then the limit of thy virtues will not be reached.” Mythological legends and great lÌlas, sports of Mahadeva, are also in this unique stuti. Swamiji will bring out the glories of this stotram. 2016 12 Oct 11-Nov 22 (Tue-Tue) Fall Vedanta Six-week Course for Adults Swami Tattvavidananda BhagavadgÌtË - Chapter 18, verse 46 onwards with ÉËÔkara-bhËÛyam YogavËsiÛÖha – Sthiti-prakaraÙam (Abridged) Having pointed out in great detail the complexity of the karma and karmaphala structure, and that it is beyond the ken of mind because it is ignorance-based and a net of deception, Sri Krishna concludes the teaching with the statement, “Giving up all karmas, take refuge in me alone. I will release you from all karmas; do not grieve.” In keeping with the depth and clarity of ÉËÔkara-bhËÛyam, Swamiji will develop the subject matter thoroughly to reveal its potent message. In Vasistha Maharishi’s profound answers to the young prince Sri Rama’s questions, Sthiti-prakaraÙam is an exposition of the true nature of the sustenance of the world vis-à-vis its appearance. It states, with conviction, that only as long as the delusion of the appearance of the world remains, its reality as an object of perception lasts. The metaphor used is the appearance of a rainbow, which is like a painting on a void that does not lend itself to be grasped. The sage exhorts mastery over the mind as the only means to see delusion as delusion and thereby to free oneself from the problems relating to life. Swamiji will explore the teaching from various perspectives. Nov 24-27 (Thu-Sun) Thanksgiving Family Vedanta Course Swami Tattvavidananda Meditation Meditation plays an integral part in a seeker’s quest for truth. To receive the knowledge of Vedanta, one requires reverential equanimity in all situations; mastery over the ways of one’s mind; and grace. The first is achieved by karma-yoga. The other two are gained by meditation, defined in the ÚËstra as a mental activity, which has ½Úvara as its topic. Swamiji will offer detailed, in-depth guidance on meditation that is consistent with the vision of Vedanta. Dec 24-31 (Sat-Sat) Year-end Vedanta Course (Christmas) Swami Tattvavidananda Sundara-kËÙ×a VËlmÌki RËmËyaÙa In Maharshi Valmiki’s RËmËyaÙa, the Sundara-kËÙ×a stands in its own right as a classic epic highlighting the courage and devotion of Hanuman and the faithfulness of Sitadevi. An analysis of the various layers of human personality—grief, lust, compassion, cruelty, etc.—depicted in the text, offers an intense study into people’s behavioral patterns and the motivating factors that prompt them. Swamiji’s elucidation of the depth in its message is certain to be inspiring. Pujya Swamiji says, “This situation can be very confusing. The native forms of culture and religion are challenged by other forms reaching the children through the global media. They have to now choose. Without knowledge of the meaning of those forms, choosing is impossible. The PÍrÙa-vidyË teaching program provides a resource offering insight into the vision of the Vedas and the vast literature and religious culture of India.” In this retreat, adults will be taught how to offer this program in their own communities. On-going Meditation Sessions Meditation plays an integral part in a seeker’s spiritual journey, in that, it steers the wavering mind into a state of quietude, wherein, the tumult of distracting desires loose their grip. With practice, the mind will be ushered to a deeper realm of stillness. Such a mind gains the capability for a lofty vision and cannot be influenced by anything. As the practice of meditation deepens, one can resolutely face the problems in life and gradually become a yukta, abide in one’s real nature. Guided Meditation sessions are conducted at the gurukulam by Swamini Ramananda, 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm. For more information please contact swamini at 570-421-1836. 2016 Calendar January S M T W Th F S 12 3456 789 10111213 141516 17181920 212223 24252627 282930 31 April S M T W Th F S 12 3456 789 10111213 141516 17181920 212223 24252627 282930 July S M T W Th F S 12 3456 789 10111213 141516 17181920 212223 24252627 282930 31 October S M T W Th F S 1 2345 678 9 101112 131415 16171819 202122 23242526 272829 30 31 2016 February S M T W Th F S 123 456 7 8 9 10 111213 14151617 181920 21222324 252627 2829 May S M T W Th F S 1234 567 8 9 1011 121314 15161718 192021 22232425 262728 293031 August S M T W Th F S 123 456 7 8 9 10 111213 14151617 181920 21222324 252627 28293031 November S M T W Th F S 12 345 678910 11 12 13141516 171819 20212223 242526 27282930 19 March S M T W Th F S 12 345 678910 11 12 13141516 171819 20212223 242526 27282930 31 June S M T W Th F S 1 234 5678 910 11 12131415 161718 19202122 232425 26272829 30 September S M T W Th F S 123 4567 8910 11121314 151617 18192021 222324 25262728 2930 December S M T W Th F S 123 4567 8910 11121314 151617 18192021 222324 25262728 293031 20 Vedic Astrology Seminars 2016 Introduction to Jyotish April 29th - May 1st, 2016 9 am - 5 pm Rakesh Sharma, Board Member, Arsha Vidya Gurukulam Registration $95 includes handouts Vedantic interpretation of Jyotish based on the teaching from Arsha Vidya Gurukulam. Placed in the middle of the Mahabharata of Vedavyasa, it shines like a pendant jewel of wisdom. The ‘Gita,’ as the Bhagavadgita is popularly called, carries a timeless message. The person to whom it is addressed is Arjuna, a prince and a warrior. At the scene of a great battle, Arjuna faces a conflict between his emotions and the proper course of actions. In this setting of war, Arjuna’s friend, Lord Krishna, becomes his teacher. Through Krishna’s teaching extended over seventeen chapters of verse, Arjuna resolves his conflict and gains self-knowledge, the essence of the teaching. Each of the seven hundred verses of the Gita is presented in devanagari script with translation, word-for-word meaning, English transliteration, and an extensive commentary by Swami Dayananda in keeping with the traditional commentary of Adi Sankara. The Gita Home Study consists of a set of 9 volumes Price: $250.00 plus S & H The entire Bhagavadgita is also available on two CD ROMs - text only in (PDF format), There are also two videos, one of Swamiji introducing the Program, and the other of Arsha Vidya Gurukulam activities with narration and an audio of the chanting meters explained. Price: $40.00 plus S & H Additionally the original 363 classes of the Bhagavadgita, from which the above two items were edited is available on 7 MP3 CDs. Hands encode our basic character and temperament helping us to understand our life trajectory and our elegant place in the cosmic order. Join this introduction to the compelling, intuitive, and infinitely rewarding world of Hasta Sāmudrika and learn basic skills that will function as a life-long practical foundation for exploring the world of hands around you. Claudia Anfuso is a practitioner of Indian Palmistry having learned this sacred art from renowned Jyotiṣa master Hart deFouw. She has a life-long passion for the human hand and its encoding of both character and destiny patterns and delights in teaching palmistry basics and workshops. August 21st Meet the Fascinating Wives of the Moon: The 27 Nakṣatras You are invited on a journey around the zodiac stopping for awhile in some of the 27 lunar mansions and meeting their luminous hostesses. No previous knowledge of Jyotiṣa is needed for this lovely exploration of the stars that are at the heart of the tradition. Learn how important they are in timing how life unfolds and how they color your individual story by their linkage to the ancient Vedic and Puraṇic deities. Penny Farrow has been involved in the Vedic tradition since 1971. She studied Jyotiṣa intensely since 1991 primarily under the personal tutelage of Hart deFouw and taught Jyotiṣa and Sanskrit at Vedic Vidya Institute in San Rafael for eight years. She has been conducting camps at Arsha Vidya since 2009. Learning Jyotiṣa Basics I May 14 & 15, 2016 Taught by Penny Farrow Jyotiṣa is an oral tradition where the role of the teacher is to cultivate the judgment of the student. Facts can be learned from a book but the gift of discrimination comes only through the interaction between teacher and student. I therefore teach in settings where such interactions are possible and have structured a series of camps here at the Gurukulam for those who are interested in ongoing training. The Jyotiṣa Basics series starts off with Basics I – an excellent foundation for any future work in this subject. The class is suitable for both beginners and experienced students as we are trying to establish a group mind with a precise understanding of fundamental principles. The feedback from even advanced students taking the class indicates that it is helpful in filling in gaps and giving a greater appreciation of the beautiful tradition that has nourished this wisdom through the ages. Basics I serves as a pre-requisite for the rest of the series. Swamiji unfolded the message of the Upanisads for over fifty years, during which time he established the global family of Arsha Vidya institutions with the single vision of imparting the perennial Vedic wisdom, respect for humanity and cultures, and commitment to the upliftment of society. The major Arsha Vidya centers in India are in Rishikesh, Coimbatore and Nagpur and, in the U.S.A. in Saylorsburg. Swami Viditatmananda Saraswati, a learned disciple of Pujya Swamiji, expounds VedËnta with a simplicity and directness that makes it easy to assimilate. Having lived and worked in the U.S. prior to becoming a renunciate, he is familiar with the lifestyles in India and the West. With his insights into both cultures, he can reach out to Indians and Westerners with equal ease. Swami Tattvavidananda, a committed disciple of Pujya Swamiji, has translated the BhagavadgÌtË Home Study Course into Telegu and has written a number of books in English and Telegu. Very natural in his scholarship, he is from a family of Vedic pandits and holds Ph.D.s in Chemistry and Sanskrit. Swamiji’s deep immersion in the Vedic tradition is reflected in the profundity and breadth of his classes, delivered with the modesty that only a true scholar can command. Swami Pratyagbodhananda, a long-time disciple of Pujya Swamiji, is at home teaching VedËnta in three languages - English, Gujarati and Hindi. He teaches not only VedËntic texts, but also RËmËyaÙa and BhËgavatam. Swamiji has taught in the gurukulam programs for over a decade, enlivening his classes with his sense of humor and affable nature.
