It is a buzzing and lively mosque. The building is purpose-built to not only serve as a place of worship but also to provide a community facility for meetings, classes, training courses and youth functions. The design considers the future of Muslims living in Britain by combining a modern high-technology infrastructure with a traditional prayer facility. The decorated parapets give the feel of a medieval English building, and contrast nicely with the arched windows, which add an Eastern touch. It is unlike other mosques in the area and attracts a very multi racial congregation, particularly the young. On-site parking, wheel-chair access and a lift make it easily accessible to the elderly and disabled. The Islamic Centre is well managed by a committee of dedicated professionals on behalf of the WISE charitable trust. They have a vision of a multi-functional centre which meets the many needs of its local community in addition to its spiritual ones. The centre also engages with local agencies and promotes a very positive image of Islam. Visitors are always impressed and there are regular Islamic sessions for the non Muslim community too, with numerous attendees commenting that it was unlike any other Islamic Centre they had previously visited. An Islamic Information stall is also run in the town centre as part of the outreach activities. There are activities for everyone thanks to the large number of volunteers that the centre attracts. Children enjoy the youth club, sports activities, and regular sleep overs, and there is Muslim Scouts for the more adventurous. Also on offer are regular Islamic studies classes catered for the youth ranging from the basic to the moderately advanced with plans underway to introduce formal GCSEs in Arabic Language and Islam. Additionally, they can attend one of the study classes covering 11+, maths, English and science to improve their literacy or numeracy skills. Adults prefer the various lectures, Islamic study circles and Arabic classes whilst looking forward to the annual camping trip. There is a trekking club, a cycling club, martial arts sessions and various sports activities throughout the week. Monday’s Open Hour facilitates a social gathering open to both Muslims and non-Muslims. Sisters have regular classes, social gatherings, exercise sessions, and organise events such as the charity bazaar. Classes are predominately delivered in the English language with some in Urdu to cater for the older generation. The Jumuah Sermon is held in English and the Eid prayer event is unlike any other of its kind in High Wycombe: held outside of the Masjid, in a hall with free food and activities on offer. There is also a dedicated website and a WISE Media group who film lectures and produce our own DVDs and CDs. These are sold at the nearby WISE bookshop or online. WISE also has official representatives who contribute positive stories to the local media and sit on various community groups. We are delighted with our first years and hope, insha'Allah, to expand services at the Masjid and promote good practice. The primary objectives of the charity are to advance the religion of Islam and Islamic knowledge and to relieve poverty. The charity is managed by volunteers who are responsible for the operations of the charity. There are two permanent employees who have the role of Imam (minister of religion). Trustees Names Chairman: Refi Shafi Secretary: Amjad Iqbal Treasurer: Abid Waheed Imams: Adil Abdul Rabb (full-time), Abu Sohaib Bassam (part-time) Activities Based at Centre: Teaching Study circles for adults These are run on weekends and some weekdays by Imam Abu Sohaib and our chairman, Abu Rumaysah. These classes are open to both brothers and sisters. Topics have included: Aqeedah (the Islamic creed) Fiqh (Islamic rulings on everyday issues, eg wudhu, inheritance, menstruation) Tajweed (Science of Quranic recitation) Tafseer (explanation of the Quran) Adab and Akhlaq (Morals and manners) Iman-strengthening seminars, e.g. Signs of Judgement Day Arabic Classes These classes are held regularly every week. There are lessons for new Muslims as well as more advanced classes using the Madinah Arabic language books. Public Lectures Various renowned lecturers, e.g. Abdur-Raheem Green, Husayn Yee, Salim al-Amry, Asim alHakeem and Adnan Abdul Qadir are invited on a regular basis to deliver iman-boosting lectures to inspire wider audiences. Topics have included death, Judgement Day, Muhammad (sallalahu alaihi wasallam), the 4 khalifs, and dawah techniques. Many lectures have been put on DVD to disseminate information about Islam. Seminars on Building Bridges Regular seminars are held for non-Muslims; an enlightening course on the True Teachings of Islam that challenges the misconceptions about Islam and tries to build bridges with the wider community. Non-Muslims are often invited to the centre to discuss Islam and also matters that affect the local and wider community. Prayers Facilities are provided for men and women for daily prayers, with approximately 500 people attending Jumuah prayers. Tarawih Prayers are held in the month of Ramadan. We have also held eclipse prayers. Eid prayers are either held in a public place (musallah) when available or in the masjid. Education and Activities for Children Quran classes - are held regularly for children aged 4 to 18 years as part of the weekend madrassah. There are many lessons catering for the differing abilities of the students, from beginners starting with the Arabic alphabet to advanced with tajweed rules. The Imam, who is originally from Jordan, provides higher level teaching to advanced students. Students are also taught a graded Islamic Studies series as part of the weekend madrassah. To meet demand, a weekday madrassah has also been started which incorporates Quranic learning and an Islamic studies syllabus. Trips - Trips are also organised, eg, to the 1001 Exhibition or to Theme Parks, as well as fun-packed camping weekends to various locations in the UK. Teachers are CRB-checked and undergo safeguarding training. Supplementary School Verbal reasoning tuition and lessons to prepare students for secondary selection tests are provided weekly for the community. Youth Club Young people attended sessions weekly and enjoy snooker, football, table tennis and other activities which encouraged good manners and teamwork. Boxercise and Martial Arts classes are also held at the centre. Muslim Scouts WISE has established a new Muslim Scout group in High Wycombe, which has an extensive waiting list due to its popularity. Services for Sisters The sisters organise and help in many activities at the masjid. There are Arabic and Quran classes run for and by sisters. Sisters teach at the weekend and weekday madrassahs. Tafsir and Quran classes are held during the week in Urdu, which are well attended by the older ladies. Quranic memorization and tajweed classes are held after jumuah for Englishspeaking sisters. Sisters have regular coffee morning sessions aimed at strengthening the community, especially the large number of reverts, in addition to monthly social meetings. Sisters organise fundraising events such as the annual charity bazaar. The WISE Islamic bookshop is opened by sisters to encourage sisters to visit the store. They are also working to re establish the girls youthclub and to set up a Muslim girls scouts group. Young girls have regular TeenWISE sessions in the Masjid which involve fun activities as well as Islamic education. . Funerals The masjid has a clean facility for washing and shrouding the deceased. The imam assists family members during the process and has held a seminar to train people on washing and shrouding. Several funeral prayers have been held in the prayer hall. Local Muslim funeral directors assist with transportation of the deceased to the local cemetery. We are also on contact with the local coroners office with regards to the option of using CT scanning instead of invasive autopsies to determine the cause of death due to the Islamic sensitivity of harming a person after death. Masjid Expansion Overview Since the opening in 2009 the congregation has been increasing year on year to the extent that the congregation is overflowing to the car park. Some attendees are asked alternative places to park during this period. The photos show during the Jumuah pray the attendees are praying outside. As this is a car park there is no shelter to protect them from weather. We sought guidance from architects and the community on how best to expand the mosque for additional floor space services for the next 5 to 10 years. Due to the limitations of extending the masjid outwards to the sides and back it was decided that the best option was to extend the basement back and to create an additional hall. The basement was initially designed to be used as an overflow cark park but during the years it has been used as an overflow for attendees and for youth activities due to lack of space upstairs. Expansion Plans The architectural diagram shows the cut out section with the proposed basement extension. To provide additional service to the community a small library will be built to the front of the Masjid. The diagram shows the before and after view for the proposed library. Masjid Extension Summary and Proposed Costs The extension can be summarized in two distinct sections; Basement Extension with Internal amendments for new stairs between ground floor and basement Single storey front library extension and associated alterations to entry and landscape Responses have been received from interested parties. We are working along with our architect to shortlist to one contractor. The costs received back from the contractors for the completion of total project summarized above is in the region of £380,000. URGENT Appeal – Masjid as-Salam Extension Our Dear Brother and Sisters - ‘A call to Action’ By the will and blessings of Allah (SWT) we have come a long way since the opening of the Wycombe Islamic Centre (Masjid As-Salam). The now established centre is at the heart of our community and a focal point for facilities and learning for the Muslims and for non-Muslims to obtain an insight and understanding of Islam. The Centre is buzzing with a plethora of regular activities - see website for further information www.wise-web.org Masha’Allah with the centre catering for the needs of the young and old, it now urgently requires expansion to cater for the increasing congregation coupled with the space for additional activities, WISE is therefore embarking on an expansion program to provide: A Library / Resource Centre to the front of the Masjid. An extension to the current basement providing a larger multifunctional hall and teaching space. Approximately 40% additional space for congregational prayers. Our goal Insha’Allah is to raise £190K over the next 6 Months. Your masjid is therefore in need of your help again as you so generously did so before. Our dear brothers and sisters, we ask that you donate generously what you can. Your reward is measured with Allah (swt) and He is the best to reward you for this sadaqah jaariyah. Ideally we would want single donations as soon as possible or if this is difficult then donations spread over a 6 month period (please pledge what you can). The cost of the total project is around 380K. Donations We appeal to our brothers and sisters to donate generously for the expansion of the House of Allah. Allah, the Most High, says: “Those who spend their wealth by night and day (in Allah’s cause), in secret and in public, shall have their reward with their Lord.” [Baqarah (2): 274] 1.
