We Want You…at…Camp San Luis Obispo!
We are looking for a few good men, women, and high school aged 4-H
members! The first National 4-H Shooting Sports Workshop to ever be
held in California will take place at Camp San Luis Obispo. This event
trains 4-H leaders to return to their home states and counties and
become leader trainers. As part of their course work, they must
participate in a hands-on teaching exercise. We are recruiting 4-H
leaders and teen leaders (high school aged youth) to serve as students
to these future instructors. You don’t need to know anything about
shooting sports. Their goal is to teach you. The training session will
take place on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. The
disciplines offered that day will include: archery, hunting skills, muzzle
loading, pistol, rifle, and shotgun.

Access to the Post
The front gate guards will have a list of names of those who have
contacted me. Only those names on the list will be allowed access to
the facility. Privately owned vehicles are allowed on post but the driver
must present a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of
insurance.

The 4-H enrollment fees for 2015-2016 are as follows:

**Please Note- Countywide Projects
The CA 4-H office has asked that we no longer use “Countywide Projects” as a club title. This
means that all countywide projects will be listed under the project leader’s primary club instead
and titled in such a way that it indicates it is a project open to all members in the county. For
example, Brenda Gilardone’s Countywide Horse Mastership project will be listed under the club
“Los Amigos” and will be entitled “Equine - Horse: SB COUNTY HORSE MASTERSHIP.”

2015 Santa Barbara County 4-H NYSD Project
Open to all Santa Barbara County 4-H Members! Participating youth will conduct the 4-H National Youth Science
Day experiment, “Motion Commotion,” then plan and participate in a larger NYSD event to be held at the Santa
Barbara County 4-H Celebration on October 3 in Goleta. Teen participants will also learn how to present the
Motion and other science projects to their clubs, at local school Science Nights, and at various 4-H events such
as LEaDs.
Project Schedule:
Sunday, September 27, 2-5 PM: conduct experiment and plan for Celebration event. Learn how to present the
Motion and other science projects to peers (will meet at project leader’s house in Goleta).
Saturday, October 3, 1-4 PM: attend the 4-H Celebration event at Stow House in Goleta and present the NYSD
and other science projects.
The Motion Commotion experiment includes two investigations – Stop & Go Science and We Need More Time!
– in which students explore the physical and human factors of motion. The experiment explores motion through
the relationship of speed and stopping distance, physics, reaction time, and safety. There are also options to
expand on the experiment with other activities (see 4-H.org/nysd).

Volunteers Wanted for Gala Event
The Four Leaf Clover Foundation and the Santa Barbara County 4-H Youth Development
Program Management Board Fundraising Committee are teaming together for a fundraising
event. Plans are being formed to hold a Gala sometime in 2015. The fundraising event will
include dinner, live and silent auctions, etc. We are asking for adult and youth volunteers to join
a committee to assist the Four Leaf Clover Foundation with this event. We are looking for a
core team of at least twelve adults and teens to commit to this committee. More details will
follow as the committee begins meeting.

News from our 4-H’ers
Hey there 4-Her’s this is your 2015-2016 All Stars Caitlin Breck and Josiah
Gilardone. We are very excited to represent Santa Barbara County 4-H. We can’t
wait to meet all of you. We hope to see you while celebrating 4-H 95 years and
National Youth Science Day on October 3, 2015 from 1-4pm at Rancho La Patera
Stowe House, 304 No. Los Caneros Rd, Goleta CA 93117.
Santa Ynez 4-H wins prizes at the County Fair
Santa Ynez 4-H members showed off their showmanship skills at the Santa Barbara County Fair last
month winning championship ribbons, plaques and belt buckles in multiple categories.
Hard work throughout the year paid off for the members of this small 4-H club who won many of
the top prizes in showmanship and conformation with market goats, dairy goats, sheep, turkeys,
rabbits, cavies, pygmy goats, chickens, horses, and arts and crafts.
Anna Scheck, who won first place in advanced dairy goat showmanship,
moved on to the round robin championship later in the week, competing
against all other 4-H members winning advanced showmanship in their
respective large animal categories (beef, market goat, sheep, and swine)
and took first place again. Ben Voorhees, won first place in advanced
rabbit showmanship, moved on to the round robin championship for small
stock showmanship, competing against all other 4-H winners in the small
stock categories (chickens, cavies, pygmy goats, and turkeys), and also
took first place.
The Santa Ynez 4-H Club also produced the grand champion and the
reserve grand champion turkeys, plus the reserve grand champion rabbit
and market goat. The 4-H members had Harriet Heath, Community Leader and Project leader in Dairy Goats, Market
Goats and Sheep as their outstanding coach, teacher, and mentor.
Santa Ynez 4-H meets the second Monday of the month at the Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Center,
195 N. Refugio Rd, starting September 14th. All youth ages 5-19 are welcome and there are
opportunities to be elected to officer positions in the 2015/16 year. Projects are offered that lead to
showing and auctioning animals at the Santa Barbara County Fair (for ages 9+) including swine,
market goats, sheep, beef, chickens, turkeys and rabbits. Members also have access to
county-wide projects including GIS/GPS, beekeeping, horse mastership, porcelain dolls, and
pygmy goats, plus leadership training, exhibit days, and camping.

Location: 313 W Tunnell Veteran's Memorial Center, Santa Maria
Looking for 4-H clubs to participate!!
Over three hundred families attend and participate in the Healthy School Food Pantry in Santa Maria.
There are cooking demonstration, music and art activities for children, and a community outreach
room.
If your 4-H club is interested in participating and has an interactive project to share with the
Santa Maria community this is a great place to do it!

Santa Barbara County 4-H will have a booth at the Lemon Festival at Girsh Park in Goleta the
weekend of September 26 -27, 2015. Adult and youth volunteers are needed to help show and
tell the community about 4-H. Booth hours are Saturday, 10AM-6PM and Sunday, 10AM-5PM.
Come join the fun! Help run our interactive Agua Pura educational display. Greet the
community. Enjoy the festival!

Responsible for providing leadership to and managing the 4-H Youth Development Awards
Program. Responsible for leading training events related to record books and awards.

The 4-H Management Board Outreach and Visibility Director is a middle manager and provides
leadership to and coordinates the visibility and public relations activities for the Santa Barbara
County 4-H Youth Development Program (YDP).The Outreach and Visibility Director coordinates
the Outreach and Visibility Management Committee and any related ad-hoc committee(s).
