The two are in apposition. Insofar as here and there, and now and then, God’s kingly will is being done in various odd ways among us even as this moment, the kingdom has come already. Insofar as all the odd ways we do his will at this moment are at best half-baked and halfhearted, the kingdom is still a long way off - a hell of a long way off, to be more precise and theological. This Week at FPC This summer we embark on a sermon series entitled “Kingdom Come.” We will look at the nature and characteristics of the Kingdom of God which Jesus announced at the beginning of His public ministry, “the Kingdom is at hand,” and told His disciples to pray for, “thy Kingdom come is on earth.” What does it mean that the Kingdom has come in Jesus Christ and is coming? Is the Kingdom a future hope or a present reality? Don’t miss this important series that guides us as individuals and a church, into the fulfillment of the Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. This Sunday we will honor our high school and college graduates. Come celebrate their accomplishments and pray for God’s blessing on the next leg of their journey. For the King and the Kingdom, SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY 2nd Sunday after Pentecost Liturgical Color: Red June 2, 2013 † 11 a.m. † GATHERING IN GOD'S NAME † PRELUDE We Pray Now to the Holy Spirit CHORAL INTROIT I Will Sing Unto the Lord Buxtehude Beck My table Thou hast furnished In presence of my foes; My head with oil Thou dost anoint, And my cup overflows. My head Thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my days Will surely follow me; And in my Father’s heart alway My dwelling place shall be. And in my heart for evermore Thy dwelling place shall be. *SECOND LESSON SERMON Heaven on Earth *CALL TO WORSHIP *HYMN 21 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee HYMN TO JOY PRAYER OF CONFESSION Sovereign God, we confess our desire to reshape Your world to our own advantage. We are more concerned with what we eat that with who will get to eat today. Our own security is more important to us than the health and safety of all Your children. The first fruits of our labor grace the altars of our own desires instead of honoring You. We prefer that You keep Your distance from us unless we need You. We like promises without commands, gifts without responsibilities. O God, we confess that our ways don’t work. Turn us around people...(continue in silent for true worship and service, as forgiven and forgiving people... personal confession) ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Leader: Friends, hear and believe the Good News of the Gospel. People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. The Bible Training Centre for Pastors works to deliver theological education and leadership training to lay pastors and lay leaders in their own communities. They serve in 85 countries in communities with limited access to professional education. Through our Global Mission Offering we underwrite the cost of Swahili curriculum for lay leaders (men and women) in Kenya. STEPHEN MINISTRY is a vital part of the care giving ministry of First Presbyterian Church. If you know of someone who could benefit from having a Stephen Minister, suggest Stephen Ministry to him or her. Please contact Rev. Doughton for more information. Thank you to the Men’s Prayer Breakfast for packing 200 lunches in 20 minutes on Thursday, May 16th. The Food Pantry served 197 family units and 375 people over 17 Sessions in April. Our next Sack Lunch Packing will be on Wednesday, June 12, at 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Please continue to be in prayer for those who receive meals from our Break Bread volunteers, our Sack Lunch volunteers, and those who receive grocery bags from the Food Pantry. The Upper Room and Our Daily Bread devotional books are available in the parlor hallway, in the narthex of the sanctuary and in the reception hall. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Oklahoma, Tornado Update: At the request of the Indian Nations Presbytery, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has sent National Response Team members into the Moore, OK area to assist in connecting the presbytery with the larger response, to help assess next steps, and to provide a witness to the connectionism of the Presbyterian Church in a time of great tragedy. PDA is also in touch with the American Red Cross in order to coordinate efforts and offer support for their Integrated Care Teams that will be working with survivors and the families of those who were killed. PDA will support Church World Service in sending emergency relief supplies, such as CWS Blankets and Gift of the Heart Kits to those in shelters. CWS plans to process five material shipments. How you can help: Give: You can stand in the GAP for disaster survivors, and help the church in its response by making financial gifts to First Presbyterian Church marked “PDA Oklahoma.” Pray: As part of the body of Christ, our first and best response is prayer. Please pray for those who survived the storm and will face hard days ahead, for those who mourn loved ones lost, and that the response of the church will be an example of the faithful love of God. 4 Fellowship & Christian Education Opportunities THE STORY is coming!
