We are committed to a “global” approach in our programming and bringing films to town from around the world. The GFF started as—and remains—a small-town
event driven by a commitment to community engagement and cultural enrichment. For our ninth year, we’re shining the spotlight on the many ways film can
manifest, enrich, challenge, and complicate community from the local to global. From the collaborative work of making films to the communal experience of
viewing them, movies help make communities.
The festival will feature an array of fictional, animated, and documentary shorts and feature films about community dynamics, pressures, benefits, problems, and
promises. We’ll feature picks from Sundance along with critically acclaimed films from the global film festival circuit. Classic, cult, and family films—from the
silent era to the 21st century—will be renewed as local community events with an emphasis on audience participation. Guest filmmakers, film scholars from overseas,
cinephiles, returning alumni, family, and rising young talents competing in our international student short film competition; live music, complimentary food and
drink, after parties, and morning coffee klatches…all these will come together in a community/film event not to be missed
and long to be remembered.
Join us in celebrating and learning from film’s powerful mix of the real and the magical as a means of enriching and expanding the senses of
community we know, think we know, and of which we consider or aspire to make ourselves a part.
In order to bring audiences the latest films from festival circuits we will advertise movie times, descriptions, and prices
as soon as they become available on our website: filmfestival.wm.edu

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari – January 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 & 24
Allow Dr. Caligari to mesmerize you with his cabinet in a quintessential,
digitally restored work of German Expressionist cinema. This silent film
tells the story of an insane hypnotist (Werner Krauss) who uses a sleepwalker
(Conrad Veidt) to commit murders. It features dark and twisted visual styles,
sharp-pointed forms, and structures and landscapes that lean and twist in
unusual angles with shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets.
Rated NR/78 min/1920. Tickets $4 per person.
Suffragette – January 20-28
The foot soldiers of the early feminist movement were women who were
forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an
increasingly brutal state. Starring Meryl Streep, Anne-Marie Duff, and Helena
Bonham Carter. Arrive early as your ticket includes a short newsreel created
by the March of Time about Colonial Williamsburg prior to each show. Rated
PG-13/106 min.
“Colonial Williamsburg Produced by the March of Time” –
Back by popular demand! Arrive 20 minutes prior to each showing of
Suffragette and enjoy a nostalgic wartime film commonly shown before movies
in the 1940s and ‘50s. This reel showcases Williamsburg as an attraction, from
history to shopping and lodging. 1942.

much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited
to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants, and pirates. PG/98

The Big Lebowski
GFF Mug Night: The Big Lebowski – January 28
Mark it a 10, Donny, it’s going to be league game night at the Kimball. Come
out and take’r easy for the official abide-fication of the Williamsburg Chapter
of dudeism. That might mean tying the whole Kimball Theatre together with
an ordination ceremony for new dudeist priests on a persian rug. Or it might
mean presenting Little Lebowski Urban Achiever Awards for outstanding
demonstrations of duderonomy. And then again, it might just mean coming to
the Kimball to abide and experience on the big screen one of the greatest cult
films of all time. Regardless, you’ll need to be careful: there will be beverages,
man…including GFF Mugfuls of Williamsburg Alewerks draft beer.
Rated R/117 min/1998.
GFF Mug Night: Do The Right Thing – February 4
You can do nothing, you can do something, or you can… Do the Right Thing
by coming out to see one of the greatest living filmmaker’s best films. Calling
it “a powerful and persuasive look at an ethnic community and what makes
it tick,” the Chicago Reader’s Jonathan Rosenbaum lauded Spike Lee’s Do the
Right Thing as “funky, entertaining, packed with insight, and political in the
best, most responsible sense.” Rated R/120 min/1989.
GFF Mug Night: Remember the Titans –
February 11
Come out to remember, re-watch—or perhaps experience
for the first time—this true titan of the sports movie genre.
Offering a not-to-be-missed star performance by Denzel
Washington, Remember the Titans is also—in the words
of Rotten Tomatoes—“An inspirational crowd-pleaser
with a healthy dose of social commentary.”
Rated PG/114 min/2000.
Trumbo – February 13-23
In 1947, Dalton Trumbo was Hollywood’s top screenwriter—until he and
other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. Starring
Bryan Cranston and Helen Mirren. Rated R/124 min.
