The GFF started as—and remains—a small-town event driven by a commitment to community engagement and cultural enrichment. For our ninth year, we’re shining the spotlight on the many ways film can manifest, enrich, challenge, and complicate community from the local to global. From the collaborative work of making films to the communal experience of viewing them, movies help make communities. The festival will feature an array of fictional, animated, and documentary shorts and feature films about community dynamics, pressures, benefits, problems, and promises. We’ll feature picks from Sundance along with critically acclaimed films from the global film festival circuit. Classic, cult, and family films—from the silent era to the 21st century—will be renewed as local community events with an emphasis on audience participation. Guest filmmakers, film scholars from overseas, cinephiles, returning alumni, family, and rising young talents competing in our international student short film competition; live music, complimentary food and drink, after parties, and morning coffee klatches…all these will come together in a community/film event not to be missed and long to be remembered. Join us in celebrating and learning from film’s powerful mix of the real and the magical as a means of enriching and expanding the senses of community we know, think we know, and of which we consider or aspire to make ourselves a part. In order to bring audiences the latest films from festival circuits we will advertise movie times, descriptions, and prices as soon as they become available on our website: filmfestival.wm.edu ©2015 The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation ~6~ 12/15-KT-11217143 M e r c h an t s Squ ar e ~ I n for mat i on (757)565- 8588 ~ Ti c ke t s 1- 855- 923- 8013 ~ ki mbal l t h e at r e . c om KIMBALL THEATRE FILMS * Please refer to calendars on page 4 for show times. 18TH- CENTURY WOODWORKING GLOBAL FILM FESTIVAL MUG NIGHTS Join us as we explore cabinetmaker creations in conjunction with Colonial Williamsburg’s annual Woodworking Forum. No extra ticket required. 18th-Century Woodworking The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Suffragette Trumbo The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari – January 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 & 24 Allow Dr. Caligari to mesmerize you with his cabinet in a quintessential, digitally restored work of German Expressionist cinema. This silent film tells the story of an insane hypnotist (Werner Krauss) who uses a sleepwalker (Conrad Veidt) to commit murders. It features dark and twisted visual styles, sharp-pointed forms, and structures and landscapes that lean and twist in unusual angles with shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets. Rated NR/78 min/1920. Tickets $4 per person. Suffragette – January 20-28 The foot soldiers of the early feminist movement were women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal state. Rated PG-13/106 min. “Colonial Williamsburg Produced by the March of Time” – Back by popular demand! And then again, it might just mean coming to the Kimball to abide and experience on the big screen one of the greatest cult films of all time. Regardless, you’ll need to be careful: there will be beverages, man…including GFF Mugfuls of Williamsburg Alewerks draft beer. Rated R/117 min/1998.
