Meet the Owner:
Kelby Pedro
As a CDL Driver for HPM, Kelby
Pedro’s mission is to deliver the
goods. His day starts early (at
work by 6 a.m./on the road an
hour later) and it’s a schedule
that suits him as well as the fish
and livestock he raises. Whether
he’s loading his truck at the crack
of dawn, cruising the highway
or under pressure to maneuver
in close quarters, Kelby enjoys
getting HPM customers what they
need, when they need it.
It’s been two years since Kelby
joined the team. The description
of his most memorable experience
so far—the time he steered his
truck stacked with metal roofing
through a tricky entrance on a
tough location, then in and out of
a number of tight spots to score
a grateful customer at the end—
sounds like something from a
Mario Brother’s game. “It makes
you feel good when they tell you
that,” Kelby says as he describes
the gratitude he received for this
particular job well done. Let it
be known, the man can handle a
challenge.
The way Kelby sees it, delivering
service is just as important as the
goods, and when the customer
gets both there’s a “ripple effect
that goes to the bottomline”. .
. his way of saying that, as an
employee-owner, Kelby’s invested
in his job.
KNOW WHAT THIS IS?
‘Early to work’ means ‘early
home’ and also means Kelby has
more time to devote to his offjob priorities—family and faith.
Kelby and his wife Terri have
two daughters and one son.
Together they care for a pair of
standard pets, dogs “Koapaka”
and “Kala’e,” and some not so
standard ones, pigs “Rusty” and
“Piggy.” Favorite Pedro activities
include hunting and fishing;
outside the family circle, all get
involved with community through
their church.

It starts 92 years ago in a small warehouse in Hilo and unfolds with the kind of determination that reminds one of the
U.S. Post Office creed, except instead of rain, snow, heat and dark of night, the heroes of the HPM story stick to their
appointed rounds despite economic storms, two tsunamis and a Department of Defense takeover during World War II.
Kametaro Fujimoto and Sanzo Kawasaki are the local contractors who started Hawaii Planing Mill in 1921; they
thought applying their own finishing standards to raw timber was a good idea. Nine decades later, everything built on
the soundness of their plan and quality of their workmanship proves they were right.
Jump ahead to 2013 and you find HPM Building Supply—a thriving enterprise with four locations on Hawaii Island,
one on Oahu, one on Kauai and a dedicated sales representative servicing Maui. The company is 100% owned by
its employees who provide Hawaii’s builders with high quality lumber, custom metal roofing, pre-fabricated wood wall
panels, asphalt shingle roofing, concrete accessories and steel framing components in addition to standard supplies,
such as paint, hardware and tools. While many things have changed since Kametaro and Sanzo founded the business
(visit our website for a detailed timeline), one thing remains the same: Providing local contractors with the goods and
services they need to succeed is the heart of our business.
