Amalfi Coast Hiking
Duration: 6 Days/5 Nights
Amalfi, Capri, and Ravello
Your tour of the Amalfi Coast begins in Sorrento. One hour
south of Naples, Sorrento offers laid back Italian charm. Overlooking Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, the town is
our base for the first three days of our Amalfi adventure. This
region is known for its high quality produce including tomatoes, peppers, lemons, and oranges all of which take on the
unique flavor of the region’s volcanic soil. Seafood lovers will
delight with freshly prepared southern Italian fish recipes. We
hike along a rocky terraced coastline past olive trees and lemon
groves. Spectacular views of mountain and sea are our constant companions. An Italian guide shows us the marvels of
Pompeii. In Pompeii we walk down 2000 year old streets,
stopping to tour Roman houses frozen in time. We take a highspeed hydrofoil to the island of Capri where we go inside the
Blue Grotto. In Anacapri we take a chairlift up to the highest
point on the island. This tour is all about spectacular views and
none are better than the views from Capri’s Villa San Michele.
Leaving Sorrento we head further south to the little town of
Ravello. High above the sea Ravello has been a playground for
famous writers and movie stars alike. During our two day stay
in we visit the coastal towns of Amalfi and Atrani. This tour
shows you the highlights of the Amalfi coast.

Day 1
Sorrento
Nerone to Punta Penna
3 miles (5 kilometers)
We rendezvous at our three-star hotel in Sorrento at 1:00 p.m.
and head for an introductory lunch at our favorite trattoria.
Sorrento is an attractive coastal resort with 20,000 residents.
The town is a popular destination due to its charm and strategic
location near Pompeii and Capri. After lunch we shuttle 30
minutes by van to the village of Nerone. A moderate hike
takes us to the Punta Penna headland with spectacular views of
the Bay of Naples and Capri. The walk serves as the perfect
introduction to the Sorrento Peninsula with fine sea and mountain views. Dinner on your own in Sorrento
Day 2
Sorrento
Pompeii Guided Tour
After a buffet breakfast we shuttle 45 minutes to Pompeii. We
have an appointment with an Italian guide who will show us
the marvels of this 2,000 year old city. Pompeii was a thriving
Roman town of 20,000 residents on the shore of the Bay of Naples. In 79 A.D. Mount Vesuvius erupted entombing the city
under 30 feet of mud and ash. The town was lost for nearly
1,700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since
then its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire.
We explore the streets of Pompeii and enter into Roman homes
and businesses frozen in time two millennia ago. After lunch
in Pompeii we had back towards Sorrento. Those wanting to
see more of the coastline can be dropped off above Sorrento for
a one-hour downhill hike into town. Those who prefer a more
relaxing afternoon can take the van all the way back to the hotel. Dinner on your own in Sorrento.

Day 3
Sorrento
Capri Island
This morning we take a high speed hydrofoil from Sorrento to
the island of Capri. A resort since Roman times, today the island offers rugged seascapes, beautiful views, and cool cafés.
Upon our arrival we switch to a smaller boat and head to the
famous Blue Grotto. Squeezing through a three foot high entryway we enter a 60 yards (55 meters) long grotto where the
sun reflects brilliantly on the limestone bottom. From the Blue
Grotto we are off by public bus to Anacapri, the island’s second town. There we take a chairlift up Monte Solare. The
summit offers 360 degree views of the Amalfi Coast and the
bay Naples. Stretch your legs with a walk downhill or take the
chairlift down for a more leisurely trip. We visit Villa San
Michele, a 19th Century villa built on the ruins of a Roman Imperial villa. The villa offers some of the most beautiful views
of Capri. We leave you some time to explore the town of Capri
before taking a hydrofoil back to Sorrento. Dinner on your
own in Sorrento.
Capri Island
We visit the top sights of
Capri including:
• The Blue Grotto
• Villa San Michele
• Monte Solare
• Villa Jovis (a Roman
Emperor's palace from
AD 27).

Ravello
Ravello to Amalfi and Atrani
4.5 miles (7 kilometers)
Today we shuttle further south to Ravello and check into our
three-star hotel, our base for the next two days. Ravello is
small town of 2,500 that offers perhaps the best views of the
Amalfi coast. At 1,000 feet ( 300 meters) above sea level,
Ravello sits like a natural balcony above the town of Amalfi.
After lunch in Ravello we tour the spectacular gardens and terraces of the Villa Cimbrone. A 7 km downhill hike leads us to
the towns of Amalfi and Atrani. If Amalfi proves too touristy
head back to peaceful Atrani. Be sure to stop at Atrani’s
beach, naturally cut into the steep cliff walls. Dinner on your
own in Ravello.

Ravello to Pontone
3 miles (5 kilometers)
Hiking along terraced hills through vineyards and lemon trees
we make our way to the village of Pontone. Well off the tourist trail the town has the perfect bar for a mid-morning rest.
High above Amalfi, Pontone offers beautiful views over the
bay. For even better views take the 30-minute optional hike to
a medieval watchtower called Torre dello Zico. Bring your
camera to capture the spectacular views from this ancient outcropping. Dinner on your own in Ravello.
The Hike
Day 5: Mostly downhillhike to the village of
Pontone. For better views
continue on to Torre del
Zico (2 hours).
Day 6
Hiking Tour Ends

out of the hotel and continue your travels. You will need to
take a bus or taxi down to Amalfi. From Amalfi you can take a
another bus or ferry.
DEPARTURE ON LAST DAY OF TOUR
From Amalfi you can head by bus to Salerno (busses hourly) or
Naples (8 busses per day). From Easter through September
there are also ferries from Amalfi to Naples and Salerno. The
fastest way out of Amalfi is to go to Salerno and then take a
train. You will need to leave yourself about one hour to travel
from Amalfi to Salerno. There is a Eurostar train (Italy’s fastest) every two hours from Salerno to Rome. The Eurostar train
ride takes 2.5 hours. Private coach transport can be arranged
from Ravello to Salerno.
