PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A
fter serving as
P resident of
the Board for
the Unrecables the
last three years, I am
stepping down to
allow someone else
the opportunity to
provide their leadership and vision to the Club. It has
been an honor to serve the club I love
so well and have served so long in various capacities. I’ve been a volunteer
Instructor Candidate, certified ski
instructor, Ski Director, and President
in my 28 years with the club. I look
forward to many more years with all
of you and many more trips up US
Highway 395 to our beloved
Mammoth Mountain. When leaving a
Board, I’m sure it’s common to wish
you could have got more done while
you were on the Board but I was
happy to serve and I know the right
people will step up to keep the club
moving forward. This club is so wonderful and is filled with amazing people with huge hearts.
Going forward, I hope to keep
making as many of the trips as possible and skiing with as many of you as
continued -- p. 5
Catherine Ohl and Jennifer Nerad-Sultan are presented with the
inaugeral FWSA Environmental Awards from Mary Manning.

VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
MARC LAFLUER
I
t’s been a great
privilege acting as VP over
the last couple of
years to help the
Unrecables move
forward in achieving its goals. As
we come to an
end of the current
board member cycle, I will be stepping
down as VP and would like to send
my best wishes to the incoming board
members to continue the great work
the Unrecables does to support the
disabled skiing community. In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board members for their dedication and hard
work in supporting the Unrecables;
it’s been a pleasure working with you
all.
Hope to see everyone on the
slopes next season. !

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS
GORDON CARDONA
I
t has been a pleasure serving as
Membership Director the past few
years. Hopefully, I have disseminated information to you timely and
accurately. Data is only good what
you have given me.
Time to hand the reins to our
new Membership Director, John Gray.
We are sure he will do a fine job and
have some fresh ideas for the membership. Please give him and the new
2015-16 Board your support.
I would like to welcome Dee
Armstrong for stepping up to serve as
our new Webmaster. Huge thank-you
to Bonnie West who has maintained
our web site for many years. She has
received many awards from FWSA for
her work on our web site. !

A
fter several days of hard skiing, waking up on Sunday
before 6:00am and skiing till
noon, we still had 5-7 hours of driving
to look forward to, to get back to Los
Angeles (even longer if your final destination is San Diego). It was after our
March trip. Some time after dropping
a member of our group off at the
Mammoth/Yosemite Airport (he was
flying home to San Diego), during the
mind numbing drive down 395, we
spied a familiar looking vehicle. Sure
enough, it had a couple Unrecables in
it. We sped up, honked, waved as we
passed them. Not to be outdone, they
sped up, pulled up along side of us
and the passenger (female) promptly
pulled down her pants and mooned us
before pulling ahead. The gauntlet
was dropped. We COULDN'T be outdone. The girl driving the car that I
was in sped up (we were in the right
lane), pulled along side of the other
car, lifted up her shirt and FLASHED
them - all while holding on to the
steering wheel - not too shabby.
Shortly thereafter the highway split
(395 and 14), they were on their way to
San Diego while home for us was Los
Angeles. Oh well, back to the same
old, dull grind. LA, 2 hours ahead. !

T H E U NRECABLES N E W S
FWSA CONVENTION HELD IN SAN DIEGO
SIGRID NOACK
T
he Far West Ski Association conducted
its
83rd
Annual
Convention June 4-7 at the Town
and Country Resort & Convention
Center in San Diego, hosted by the San
Diego Council of Ski Clubs.
Thursday’s optional events
included the historic Old Town Trolley
Tour and Seal Tour. A fabulous event
was held that night on the USS
Midway with over 200 attendees. In
addition to the great food and drinks,
we were able to go up to the flight deck
and view all the planes and historic
memorabilia. Optional events on
Friday included the 9th Annual
Michael German Memorial Golf
Tournament, (Sigrid Noack's foursome
won with the HIGHEST score!) a La
Jolla Cove Kayak Tour, biking around
Mission Bay, and a trip to the San
Diego Zoo. The Ski Club Happy Hour
theme was “Surfin’ for Ski Deals” and
featured a try at the Guinness Book of
World Records for the most people
that could fit into a large Hawaiian
Skirt.
Friday evening was the 30th
Annual Silent Auction and Snowsports
Trade Show. The Silent Auction raised
over $35,000 to support FWSA programs. A portion of the proceeds will
be donated to USARC, whose members volunteered as the Bid Runners
for the Auction.
S a t u rday featured two outstanding
Snowports
Leadership
Academy sessions.
The Morning
Session “Improving Social Media
Savvy” featured Craig Bro u s s a rd, a
digital marketing, mobile marketing
and social media expert and founder
of Mobiigo, LLC. Jamic Hamlin also
T H E U NRECABLES N E W S
gave an informative discussion on email marketing and MeetUp. The
afternoon
session,
“Latest
Technologies in Winter Equipment,”
featured Mike Whitaker, a Bolle and
Nordica roaming brand ambassador.
The key presenters in the Public
Affairs Panels included: Shawn Styles,
weather Meteorologist and Lifestyle
Reporter for CBS News 8 in San Diego;
Matthew Drake, National Ski Areas
Association Director for the Pacific
Northwest; and Chuck Morse, former
FWSA Executive Director.
Stacey Cook, US Women’s
Speed Team member, Olympian and
World Cup Racer was the Keynote
Speaker. The Women’s Speed Team
snagged the first-ever historic US
podium sweep in the Lake Louise
downhill opening the 2015 season:
Lindsey Vonn (1st), Stacey Cook (2nd)
and Julia Mancuso (3rd). Stacey shared
the realities of being a US Ski Team
Member and the hard work to takes to
persevere to make your dreams come
true. Kaleigh MacGregor, a member of
the Mammoth Mountain Ski Team and
FWSA Athletic Scholarship Winner
sponsored by Los Angeles Council of
Ski Clubs, spoke at the Saturday
Luncheon. Kayleigh’s achievements
are all the more remarkable as she was
born with Cystic Fibrosis. Her courage
and fortitude exemplifies a true champion.
On Saturday, our very own
Jennifer Nerad-Sultan was presented
with the first FWSA E n v i ro n m e n t
recognition. This award was presented by Aspen Skiing Company's Mary
Manning. The award is a week for two
in Aspen, Colorado! Jennifer was
3
accompanied by her husband Shawn
and son Malik, who had a big job to
do! Jennifer and Malik had brought a
huge string of empty water bottles to
show how many of these bottles, on
the average, one person discards in
one year. This was a very effective
e n v i ronmental
demonstration.
Congratulations Jennifer!
Annual recognition awards
were presented to members of the ski
industry, media, volunteers, racing
leagues, councils and ski clubs at
Saturday evening’s Awards Banquet.
Jane Wyckoff was the recipient of the
Bill Berry Award – Hard News as
Assistant Editor and Writer for the Far
West Skier’s Guide. Chuck Morse was
p resented the Snowsports Builder
Awards for over 40 years of service to
the snowsports community; the
Hensley Family, founders and builders
of Kratka Ridge; and Ben Finley and
Art Clay, founders of the National
Brotherhood of Skiers. Many partied
late enjoying dancing to “The Party”.
Sunday was all business, with
the General Session, By-Laws voting,
and elections. The delegates approved
a By-Laws change of procedures to follow, when elections result in a tie vote.
Next year’s Convention will
be held at the DoubleTree Resort by
Hilton Paradise Valley in Scottsdale,
Arizona, on June 9-12, 2016, hosted by
the Arizona Ski Council.
A complete list of all award

FIT AND THINKS SAFETY
Skiing and Sunscreen
T
hank the sun gods, summer is
here. We can finally strip off
those parkas and scarves that
we’ve been skiing in all winter. Just
keep in mind what a mixed blessing
the sun can be especially with the
added reflection from the snow.
Next up is summer when
the water ski season kicks in.
Even though accumulating
a tan may seem like a seasonal rite,
replacing the winter pale may be
causing irreversible harm. There are
two major reasons to protect yourself against the sun: pre m a t u re
aging and skin cancer. Brown spots
and wrinkling are some of not-sohot results of sun exposure.
Sun damage is avoidable.
Big-brimmed hats, long-sleeve
shirts and plenty of high-powered
sunscreen all combine to increase
your UV barrier. Fill a shot glass
with sunscreen. That’s the approximate amount worth of sunscreen
needed to cover the body. When
y o u ’ re in the high country, you
should re-apply throughout the day
and use a sun screen with a higher
SPF. !

possible. I’m sure I’ll be helping out
the Ski and Equipment Directors just
as I have done in the past. I’ll continue
to take the experience I gain with The
Unrecables to help our veterans at the
Winter Sports Clinic as long as I can.
Our club continues to enjoy
the support and generosity of the Los
Angeles Council (LAC) of Ski Clubs
and the various member clubs in the
Council. Donations from LAC, private
donors, and our fundraising activities,
especially Ralphs Community Program, mean our club is in a strong
financial position going forward .
We’ve had a good influx of new volunteers and students in the last couple
of years but we can always use more.
I encourage all of you to spread the
word to those in our disabled community in need of recreational opportunities. At the end of the day, that is what
we are here for.
Thanks you all for your support over my three years on the Board.
I’ll see you on the slopes! !

Updated 7/8/15
Disabled Sports USA Waiver & Release of Liability, and Media Release Agreement
Disabled Sports USA, and its affiliated Chapters (“Released Parties”) are non-commercial, not for profit activity providers. The purpose of this
agreement is to exempt, waive and relieve Released Parties from any and all liability for wrongful death, personal injury, and property damage,
including, but not limited to, liability arising from the negligence of Released Parties. “Released Parties” include Disabled Sports USA, Disabled Sports
USA Los Angeles - The Unrecables and their representatives, administrators, directors, agents, coaches, employees, and volunteers; other
participants, sponsoring agencies, sponsors, and advertisers; and, if applicable, the owners, operators, and lessors of premises on which the activities
or events take place.
In consideration of the undersigned Participant being allowed to participate in any way in Disabled Sports USA and/or Disabled Sports USA Los
Angeles - The Unrecables related events and activities, the Undersigned (“Undersigned” means only the Participant when the Participant is age 18
or older or it means both the Participant and the Participant’s parent or legal guardian when the Participant is under the age of 18) agrees and
acknowledges as follows:
1. Risks of Activity. Participant will be taking part in activities that
can be hazardous and involve the risk of physical injury and/or death.
The activities are inherently dangerous and Undersigned fully realizes
the dangers of participating in the activities. The dangers and risks of
the activities include, but are not limited to the condition of the
premises and equipment, and the acts, omissions, representations,
carelessness, and negligence of the Released Parties. Recognizing the
risks and dangers, the Undersigned voluntarily chooses for Participant
to participate in the activities and expressly assumes all risks and
dangers of the participation in the activity, whether or not described
above, known or unknown, inherent, or otherwise.
2. Release and Indemnification. Undersigned (a) unconditionally
releases, forever discharges, and agrees not to sue the Released
Parties for any claims or causes of action for any liability or loss of any
nature, including personal injury, death, and property damage, arising
out of or relating to Participant’s participation in the activities,
including, but not limited to claims of negligence, breach of warranty,
and/or breach of contract the Undersigned may or will have against
the Released Parties; and (b) agrees to indemnify, defend, and hold
harmless the Released Parties from and against any liability or damage
of any kind and from any suits, claims or demands, including legal fees
and expenses whether or not in litigation, arising out of, or related to,
Participant’s participation in the activities.
3. Helmet Use. Undersigned agrees that Participant shall use a
helmet when participating in the following activities: Alpine skiing,
cycling, equestrian, ice hockey, outdoor rock climbing, snowboarding,
white water kayaking, white water river rafting, and any other activity
when directed by Released Parties. Undersigned understands that a
helmet is in no way a guarantee of safety and that no helmet can
protect the wearer against all foreseeable impacts to the head, and
that the activities can expose the Participant to forces that exceed the
limits of protection provided by a helmet. Undersigned agrees to
assume full responsibility for complying with this paragraph and that
Released Parties shall not be liable for any injury or damages resulting
from Participant’s failure to use a helmet.
4. Miscellaneous. Undersigned agrees (a) Participant will not
engage in any activities prohibited by any applicable laws, statutes,
regulations and ordinances; (b) this agreement shall be governed by
the laws of the State of CA and the exclusive jurisdiction and venue for
any claim shall be located in the state courts located in Los Angeles
County, CA; and (c) this agreement shall be binding upon the
subrogors, distributors, heirs, next of kin, executors, and personal
representatives of the Undersigned.
