The City of El Cajon is excited to welcome Walmart and

New Fire Engine
Continued from page 1
Everyone enjoyed the safe and
family-friendly environment,
which included live music,
food, and activities for children.
With all races combined,
close to 2,000 participants
registered, resulting in nearly
a 35 percent increase over the
inaugural 2013 run. The number of volunteers tripled from
2013, to over 400 this year.
In total, attendance (runners,
volunteers, vendors & spectators) was estimated at nearly
6,000 people.
Due to the large turnout,
RunEC officials anticipate being able to make important
contributions to several charities from their proceeds, donating more than last year.
The date is already set for
next year’s St. Patrick’s Day
Half Marathon and promoters are hoping to see over
five-thousand! So, mark your
calendars for March 15, 2015!

The Lakeside fire board members toured the district newest
fire engine, the 2013 Smeal “ Type 1” engine built on a Spartan
(brand) chassis during the March 11 board meeting. The engine
has a 500 gallon water tank and a 1500 gallon per minute (GPM)
fire pump. The newest engine is identical to the engine received
last year, which is housed at station 2. The short wheelbase of the
engine dramatically improves maneuverability with the districts
topography. The cost of the apparatus and equipment is about
$550,000.The third engine of this type will arrive in 2015.
The Fire Chief Andy Parr and his firefighters are very appreciative to the citizens of the District for their unwavering support of
the men and women, who are paid and volunteer, that make
up the Lakeside Fire Protection District.

National Prescription Drug

On Saturday, April 26 from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the El Cajon
Police Department, working
in conjunction with the Drug
Enforcement Administration,
will be hosting a prescription

Way. The National Prescription
Drug Take-Back Day aims to
provide a safe, convenient, and

educating the general public
about the potential for abuse
of medications. This effort is

their own homes or from the
homes of friends. Bring your

In praise of crazy
by Dr. Rev. James L. Snyder
made the mistake the
other night of complaining out loud. It is one
thing to complain under your
breath so that nobody hears
you or knows what you are
complaining about. But when
you complain out loud, then
you run the chance of somebody hearing you.
that it rather caught me off
guard.
The somebody I was most
concerned about was the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. Some things are meant
to be kept to yourself and for
obvious reasons.
All I could say at the time
was, “Did I say that out loud?”
I
For some reason, who
knows what it was, I let my
guard down and vocalized my
complaining. I must confess
“What are you complaining
about,” my wife said directing
the question to me.
At first, I did not know what
she was talking about because I
did not realize that I was vocalizing my complaints.
My wife has a delicate way of
backing me in a corner where I
have to say what is on my mind.
Fortunately, I do not have much
of a mind for anything to get on.
Unfortunately, my tongue is not
attached to anything and so it is
loosey-goosey.
SEE IT HERE?
BUY IT HERE?
KEEP US HERE?
Call us and see how easy
and affordable it can be!
(619)

Advertise in the paper everyone’s reading!
What I was complaining
about were all the crazy people, particularly on television.
Just when you think you have
seen the most crazy thing,
something else or someone
else takes the lead in the race
to crazyville.
Since my wife asked me, I
let go on a very eloquent rant
against crazy. At this point, I
forget the exact crazy that set
me off. But it does not matter. If
it were not one thing, it would
be another thing. I have tried
throughout my life to be an
equal crazy complainer. If you
are crazy, you can be sure I am
going to complain about you.
“You, in particular,” my wife
was directing this toward me,
“ought to be quite thankful
about all of the crazy people
in the world.”
That set me off on another
rant. I am not thankful for the
crazy people in this world. The
less crazy people the better I
am going to like it. And I made
the mistake of telling her exactly what I thought about that.
We do not need more crazy
people, I argued. Someone in
Congress ought to pass a law
against crazy.
While I said that, it occurred
to me that most of the crazy
people are in Congress.
I do not want more crazy
people in this world. Enough
is enough already, move on.
“Really,” my wife argued,
“you ought to be happy about
all the crazy people in the
world.”
At this point, I was tempted
to direct my complaining toward her. But you know what
that would mean, and so do I.
I finally broke down and
asked her what in the world
she was talking about.

One of the things I have
learned throughout the years
of marital bliss is that if you
ask your wife to tell you something, she will do it. But I was
desperate at this time and I
needed a little bit of clarification.
She looked at me, paused
as if she was collecting her
thoughts and then said, “You
should be thankful that there
are so many crazy people out
in the world. The more crazy
people there are, the more you
are going to fit in. If for some
reason we could eliminate all
the crazy people in the world
you would be a very lonely
person.
She continued her explanation by saying, “Every crazy
person takes the focus away
from you. If there were not
enough crazy people out in the
world people would be focusing on you and complaining
about how crazy you are.”
You do not have to hit me
over the head with a hammer.
That is the thing about my wife.
When she is right, she is right.
At least it gave me a new perspective on the world around
me. Also, a new appreciation
for crazy. I began to see her
point of view, as humbling as
it was, and realize that crazy
has a place.
As I further thought about
this, I began to realize that
everybody is crazy only in
different areas of their life.
Some people’s crazy is more
noticeable than others, but
everybody has that crazy gene.
I guess that is what makes us
human.
After some deep reflection
on the subject, I have come
to the point where I want to
praise crazy. I never thought of
it along this line, but everybody
has the right to change his or
her mind about anything. Personally, I would like to change
my mind for one that really
works.
One man’s crazy is another
man’s delight. What is crazy to
one person may be something
rather important and enjoyable to another. After all, who
am I to say what is crazy and
what is not crazy. It is important to find someone else with
something that you can truly
appreciate.
I thought about that and
what Solomon said, “Be not
wise in thine own eyes: fear the
LORD, and depart from evil.
It shall be health to thy navel,
and marrow to thy bones”
(Proverbs 3:7-8).
Instead of spending so much
time complaining about other
people, I need to exercise the
fine art of appreciation and
learn how to praise people on
their terms.

MARCH 20, 2014
Dear Dr. Luauna —
Each one reach one
Dear Readers,
ave you ever thought
to yourself, “I can’t
share Jesus with that person,
they might hit me?” One day I
was inside my shop looking
through the front windows, I
saw a black man walk by, I
thought, “Go tell him about
Jesus.” I was finishing up
with a customer so I called
my friend over and asked her
to please go outside and have
the man come back. He was already halfway down the block.
She caught him and asked him to please come back, her boss
wanted a word with him.

After I said goodbye to my customer, I met the black man
at the door, smiled and said, “Hello.” When I reached out to
shake his hand, I could see his sadness beneath the strong,
fearless appearance. He was about 65 or 70. I could tell he’d
been around the block some. His built in frown, his tough jaw
line strong in places, a few scars on his face, and his cockiness
as he looked me up and down. He kicked his shoulders back
as he tilted his head and said, “What do you want?” I told
him about Jesus Christ, he was stunned! He just looked at
me as I continued sharing how God could use his life for His
glory. I felt his cold front melt away.
I shared how much God loved him. I shared what Jesus
did in my life. He lowered his head in shame. He looked up
at me eye-to-eye, and asked, “Can God love someone like
me?” I shared how Jesus can change anyone who is willing
to repent and come to Him by faith. He prayed right there
on the street, then I invited him to church. That night, what a
surprise, he showed up with a smile on his once stone face. At
the end of service he came to the front, fell to his knees and
wept like a baby. I sent another man to please go pray with
him, the black man continued to weep and weep. Church
was excused, but he was still praying. No one bothered him;
Jesus was doing something wonderful in his heart.
The next service he showed up with a few wild looking
girls. I went to speak to them, they were young street walkers, prostitutes. I prayed with them, they wept like babies
too. Every service he brought in a few more wild girls, street
walkers, each one giving their hearts to Jesus. Finally, I asked
Eugene, “Where are you finding these women?” He said, “I
was their pimp, since Jesus touched my heart, I have to get
them off the streets.” I wanted to weep with joy. He bought
an apartment building and started taking all the girls off the
streets; he started a clothes closet and food pantry. We worked
together for many years. I had three women’s homes at the
time. He was always bringing me hurting, broken women in
need of Jesus.
Eugene was so touched by God’s love, he came to visit me
and told me he had to go into the hedges to reach the lost.
He jumped on a bus headed to Detroit, Michigan, Chicago,
and the Bronx of New York; he traveled preaching JESUS
everywhere he went. After a few years on the road, I saw
Eugene standing on a corner in one of the roughest areas
preaching about Jesus. He was passing out gospel tracts to
everyone who passed by. I honked my horn, pulled over, and
asked him, “When did you get back in town?” He smiled,
“I’m just here for a few days to check on the girls. Making
sure they are still going to church. I leave again on the train.”
With his backpack filled with gospel tracks, he smiled and said,
“I worked hard for the devil too many years. Now I must
work for Jesus.” Smiling, he said, “Thank you, for telling
me about JESUS.” (Matthew 28:19) Never be afraid to tell
somebody about Jesus!

How treatment works
In a healthy body, kidneys
clean the blood by removing
excess fluid, minerals and
wastes. However, for patients
with kidney failure, kidneys
don’t function properly and
they need a medical treatment
called dialysis to clean their
blood.

in the U.S. undergo dialysis

Home hemodialysis
For those undergoing hemodialysis, there is good news. At

their care.

Traditionally, patients on hemodialysis receive treatments
at a dialysis clinic three days
per week, lasting between
three and five hours per visit.
And patients must comply
with the clinic schedule, requiring them to manage their
treatments around the clinic’s
availability.
There are two types of dialysis: peritoneal dialysis and
hemodialysis. Peritoneal dialysis uses a cleansing fluid
that is instilled into the patient’s
peritoneal cavity, the fluidfilled gap between the walls of
the abdomen and organs, and
then drained after a prescribed
period of time. The patient’s
own peritoneal membrane acts
as a natural filter for removing
excess fluids and wastes.
For some, home hemodialysis (HHD) may be a better alternative. With HHD, patients
and care partners perform
dialysis at home after successfully completing HHD training
with a nurse.
Hemodialysis requires the
patient to have a permanent
access site to his or her cardiovascular system and uses a

commitment to build The Brady Family Clubhouse & Teen Center

This event enables the Clubs to meet the financial demands

As a former Club member, San Diego business owner and
BGCEC Board Member John Eppstein acknowledges and
appreciates the impact the Clubs had on his life; “I grew up in
each of the clubhouses in the East County. As a kid, the Clubs
gave me a place to go where everyone that worked there was
a positive role model and taught me many of the values I have
today. As an adult I am so fortunate to give back to the Clubs,
with my personal experience I can honestly say that the Boys &
Girls Clubs of East County make’s a huge impact on the lives of
the kids they serve.”

‘Divergent’ — will appeal to teens who relish violence
placed in a particular group.
She’s what’s called Divergent,
someone who will never fit into
any group.
When Beatrice (nick named
Tris) hears what happens to
those who are Divergent, she
takes unusual steps that can
mean the end of her life at
any time. She finds a way into
the Dauntless group which
requires a number of out-ofyour-mind stunts for doing
them. This includes jumping
onto moving trains or off very
tall cliffs.

Review by Diana Saenger
ike Hunger Games,
Divergent is yet another teen fantasy action film that makes teenagers
struggle to stay live. Once
again the film is set in a future
world. In Chicago, teens are
divided into distinct factions
that are based on their personalities. When they are 16, they
L
must be tested to see which faction fits their personality.
People can wind up in the
Dauntless (the brave), Erudite
(the intelligent), Amity (the
peaceful), Candor (the honest),
or Abnegation (the selfless).
When Tris Prior (Shailene
Woodley) is tested, her test
is not clear so she can’t be
The young girl is soon struggling to keep up with the group
spear-headed by Instructor
Four (Theo James) who soon
becomes attracted to Tris,
which complicates things for
both of them. The world they
live in is cold, dark, dreary and
volatile every day.
Overseeing this entire group
is Erudite’s Jeanine (Kate Winslet) who has her suspicions
about Tris. Other ones Tris has
problems with are Dauntless
leader Eric (Jai Courtney) and
big mouth trainee Peter (Miles
Teller).
Like many films coming to
theatres these days box office
numbers are often not reflected
in critics choices. At the time
of this review critics rated it
at 30 percent approval rating
opposed to the audience rating
of 96 percent. Obviously most
of these moviegoers were those
who liked Veronica Roth’s
book on which the film was
based, and the string of dark
teen films hitting the big screen.
I thought the actors did a
great job in the film, but found
the plot dull and insensitive.

Hello Kiki here. I am a young (4-1/2) Orange Tabby male,
neutered with all the trimmings! I am DECLAWED in front,
have all my shots, and am still a playful house trained kitty
ready to come live a furrever long life with you! I am shy
with people, but as soon as I get to know you I’m sweet with
a very loving personallity! I would love to have a forever
home with a family that has the love and understanding a
boy like me needs. I need patience, time, and care, with
love, and understanding. My family had to give me up by
no fault of mine...it was an allergy issue, so I was not the
reason. I am sad and a bit confused right now, I am missing
them so much. I have so much love to give, and laughs to
provide...I will make you smile when you are sad, and happy
after a long hard day at work. Can you give this boy a loving
chance at a new FURRREVER home? Come visit me in #103.

But what is it about car rides
that makes dogs so happy?
The truth is, we’ll probably
never know for sure, because
they can’t tell us! But we’ve dug
into the mystery a little bit, and
found five plausible reasons for
this curious phenomenon.
1. They like adventures
This doesn’t apply to every
dog, of course - some dogs are
shy and crave comfort -— but
in general dogs are highly curious by nature and really enjoy
any kind of adventure, from
taking a new hiking trail, to
meeting a new canine friend,
to exploring that interestingsmelling crawlspace under the
house. A car adventure is as
good as it gets — it’s novel, unpredictable, longer than many
walking adventures, and offers
all kinds of opportunities for an
exciting time. Where will we go
today? Who will we see?
2. There’s a smorgasbord
of smells in the air
Dogs are all about smells,
and for good reason. According to Nova’s website, scientists have determined that
dogs have about 3,000,000
olfactory receptors in their
noses, compared to our paltry
30,000. Dogs’ sense of smell
overpowers our own by orders
of magnitude-it’s 10,000 to
100,000 times as acute. What
does this mean, exactly in
terms of the difference in our
abilities? Well, as dog-cognition
researcher Alexandra Horowitz
explains in her book Inside of
a Dog, while we might be able
to sniff out a teaspoon of sugar
in our coffee, our pooches can
detect a teaspoon of sugar in a
million gallons of water.
So, when you crack open
the car window, you’re cracking open a whole fascinating,
unseen world for your dog full
of novelty and intrigue that
could keep him entertained indefinitely. If he’s happy sniffing
out familiar scents in your backyard, imagine how delighted he
is to sort out thousands of new
smells every minute, from the
scent of flowers in bloom, to
the smell of food cooking at restaurants, to lingering traces of a
deer that ran by two hours ago.
3. There’s something new
to see everywhere
Dogs are easily stimulated by
visual cues. You’ve probably
noticed this if your dog’s ever
gone manic at the sight of a
squirrel or rabbit in the yard,
or if he sounds off each day as
soon as he spots the mail truck.
On a car trip, there’s no end to
the things that can catch your
dog’s attention, from squirrels,
to pedestrians, to other doggie
passengers. Unlike their human
travel companions, who are
busy trying to get where they’re
going, dogs have the luxury of
gazing out the window throughout the whole trip.
4. They’re comforted by
the close presence of their
“pack”

Why dogs go nuts over car rides
e’ve all seen it - a
dog with his head
tilted up, the breeze
blowing through his fur, with an
unmistakable look of pure joy
on his face as he takes a ride
in his favorite person’s car. The
sight is enough to bring a smile
to anyone’s face. Everyone
can identify with that feeling of
unadulterated bliss.

A car creates close quarters,
and this makes dogs feel secure. They can see you, smell
you, and be near you, while
still getting all kinds of sensory
stimulation they wouldn’t at
home. In a sense, you are a
pack on an adventure together
-- just the way things would
be in the wild. Except you’re
traveling in a familiar vehicle,
with comfortable spaces your
dog can curl up in if he gets
tired of looking at the scenery.
5. It triggers their hunting instinct
Kevin Behan of Natural
Dog Training believes that
dogs love car rides because
it puts them in the same state
of euphoria that hunting does.
The idea is that the motion of
the car causes synchronized
movements among the “pack
members,” as they sway along
with the twists and turns of
the road. These synchronized
movements trigger a feeling
in dogs similar that of moving
in unison with a pack on the
hunt. In addition, to your dog
the objects outside the car
appear to be moving quickly,
which can trigger his instinct
to give chase.
Of course, it’s important
for dogs to be safe during car
travel. Their heads and paws
should stay inside the car at all
times, and they should be properly secured for their safety and
the safety of other passengers.
This doesn’t mean they will enjoy the ride any less -- they can
still see the sights, sniff the wind
and feel the excitement of a new
adventure. It just means you’ll
enjoy the ride even more knowing that they’re both happy
and safe.
