BLACKHAWK LANDS AT TULPEHOCKEN
Junior and senior high school students were treated to a
visit from B Company, 1/150 Air Assault from Fort
Indiantown Gap. Six members of the PA National Guard
landed an alpha model Blackhawk helicopter on the
JR/SR High School soccer field in June. Students were
able to tour the helicopter and ask questions of the crew.
Tulpehocken 2005 graduate, Kyle Moyer, was one of the
crew members answering questions. Kyle hopes to
enter a 1 year helicopter flight school program in the fall.

Tulpehocken’s spring sports programs enjoyed their share of success on the athletic fields. For the
Trojans, the varsity baseball team finished the regular season as the Berks IV champs and qualified
for the district III playoffs. The girls’ soccer team enjoyed an equally impressive season by qualifying
for both the county and district playoffs. In track and field, the Trojans had 16 athletes qualify for the
district meet and two sophomores, Cameron Pierson and Devyn Emerich, qualify for the state meet.
Fall sports for the high school 2006-07 season will officially begin on August 14, 2006. Fall sports
physicals will be administered on August 2, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We hope to see the

Third Grade Agriculture Adventure
April 27, 2006, was an exciting day for 120 third grade students from Bethel and Penn-Bernville
Elementary Schools. The children attended the Third Grade Agriculture Adventure held at MorDale Farms in Myerstown, Pennsylvania. The event was organized by high school students
from the Tulpehocken Jr./Sr. High School who are involved in agriculture education classes as
well as the FFA.
The Agriculture Adventure featured six different stations that
groups of students visited throughout their day. The stations
included recycling, animal care, water care, soil care, plant
care, and food safety. Representatives from the Berks County Conservation District, Willow Creek
Animal Hospital, and Berks County Master Gardeners volunteered their time to present information to
the children. The children enjoyed petting the calves and viewing cows being milked.
The afternoon was an enjoyable, fun-filled day for the third graders. The students took home soil
samples and coloring books to help them remember their day of learning about agriculture.
Mor-Dale Farms, who welcomed the children, is owned and operated by Ralph Moyer and family.

I never fully appreciated the value of an autobiography until I sat down to write one. That was
when I realized that it is in fact one of the most difficult genres to write in.
Nevertheless, I would assume that the best place to start would be the beginning. I was born at
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Reading. My family consists of my parents, Jeanette and Jefferie, and my
sister, Gabrielle.
Rhiannon Trate with her artwork and
book.
Throughout elementary school, my primary focus was on my artistic abilities. I briefly did a little
modeling/acting, which took me all over New York, New Jersey, and the vicinity. Upon beginning
Junior High, I discovered I had a talent for writing, which I decided to pursue relentlessly. It is a
hobby that I plan to indulge in throughout my life. I also enjoy sewing immensely, and that, too, I
will never be able to give up.
However, I recently discovered what it is I want to do with the rest of my life. This decision all but
devastated my family, but I feel that it is my true calling. My dream is to become a State Trooper,
and to eventually engage in an investigative branch of the force. Other than the danger of the job,
my family’s prominent concern seems to be the lack of artistic expression it provides me. But as I
have said, writing, sewing, and painting are all hobbies which I benefit from, so I plan to always
engage in them.
It would probably be odd to say that my schoolwork serves as a hobby as well, but considering
the time and effort I put into it, it would be just as unheard of not to. My grades are indisputably
my number one priority; as another dream of mine is to graduate valedictorian. I then plan on
attending Harvard if I am worthy, after which I desire a prompt relocation to a state with a
considerably warmer climate (perhaps Florida) and an education from a state police academy
there.
In brief, that is pretty much the story of my life thus far. I have tried to the best of my ability to keep
it to the point, but as a writer it is rather difficult to make anything concise. Hopefully I have
succeeded to some degree. Thank you very much for your time.

Show Choir Shines
The Tulpehocken Show Choir, under the direction of Trudi Bux and choreographed by Beverly Blatt, won
1st place overall choral performance at a tri-state competition held in Allentown in May. The 42 member
choir received a superior rating at the competition which featured students from thirteen schools from New
York, New Jersey, and Maryland. In addition, Tulpy student Maurice Goodwin was recognized with the
outstanding tenor award. Congratulations to all the participants!
HOBY
HOBY is an international youth leadership program founded by
the actor Hugh O’Brian. The mission of HOBY is to recognize
and develop student leadership potential, beginning with high
school sophomores. HOBY seminars work to motivate and
develop future leaders and to expand their individual talents and
skills.
The Tulpehocken High School faculty selects one student from
th
all interested 10 graders. This HOBY representative must
have a charismatic personality and excel at oral and written
communication, creative and critical thinking, problem-solving
and decision making. He or she must demonstrate a sensitivity
to others, courage to speak out and community service.
Michael J. Kegerise II was selected to be the HOBY
representative from the class of 2007. He attended the HOBY
seminar at Eastern University in May ‘05 and thoroughly
enjoyed the leadership activities, speakers and interactive
experiences.
Anne Hartman is the HOBY choice from the current sophomore
class, and Brooke Stewart is the alternate. Anne attended the
HOBY seminar early this June and is excited to be a part of the
HOBY family.
HOBY representatives from prior years are encouraged to stay
active in the HOBY organization and may be invited back to be
planners and counselors for the annual conferences. As
“A*Team” volunteers, both Jayne Miller (HOBY ’04) and Michael
Kegerise (HOBY ’05) helped to run the leadership seminar at
Eastern University and to organize regional community projects.

Bethel Elementary Family Science Night!
On Friday, April 7, 2006, the Bethel PTO sponsored their
3rd annual Family Science Night. Approximately 130
students and parents attended the event. “Turbo Tracy”
from Science Explorers™of Lancaster taught students
and parents about wafting, hypothesizing, and how
molecules “dance” in different forms of matter.
Participants created gases, endothermic reactions and
polymers. Each student had the opportunity to do five
hands-on experiments. They combined ingredients to
create a foamy “volcanic” eruption and made raisins
dance. They also mixed ingredients inside a vinyl glove
that rapidly expanded the glove to its maximum capacity.
Finally, students were able to squeeze two gooey
mixtures until one formed into squishy silly putty and the
other formed bouncy silly putty. Children and parents
had a great time at the Family Science Night.
PANDEMIC INFLUENZA: GET THE FACTS
Everyone is familiar with the seasonal flu. This is the common human respiratory illness caused by an influenza virus that is
passed from person to person, or from contact with germs on infected surfaces. There are two types of influenza virus – type A
and type B. Type A viruses tend to cause more severe disease, while with a type B virus; the illness tends to be milder. Many
people have some level of immunity to the seasonal flu, because they have been exposed to previous years’ seasonal flu – the
strains of which differ only slightly from year to year. Most people don’t realize that the seasonal flu usually causes some
30,000 human deaths a year, often from complications of pneumonia which are caused by the flu.
An influenza pandemic is different from the seasonal flu. An influenza pandemic is a worldwide outbreak of disease that occurs
when a new strain of type A influenza appears in the human population. When a new, or novel, strain of the type A virus
occurs, it is different enough from previous circulating strains that few people have any immunity to it. A flu pandemic can
spread very quickly before a vaccine becomes available, affects a larger number of people than seasonal flu, and will likely
cause much more illness and death than a seasonal flu.
Bird flu, or avian flu, is mainly an animal disease at this point. Bird flu is an infectious disease of birds which is caused by type A
strains of the influenza virus. Generally speaking, it isn’t found in humans. There have recently been a number of cases of
avian flu in poultry and wild birds in Asia, Europe and Africa, and a few individuals have been diagnosed with bird flu as a result
of close contact with sick poultry. Because the bird flu virus has infected a small number of people, it is being closely watched
for changes that may make it able to spread easily from person to person. If that would happen, it might cause a flu pandemic.
The Tulpehocken Area School District is committed to promoting health, wellness, and safety in the community. Look for further
updates.

SUMMER ORIENTATION PROGRAM
FOR NEW JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS
For many students the transition from the elementary school to
the middle school, or junior high school, is difficult. Many students
are overwhelmed by the various tasks and responsibilities and
become quite anxious. Some of their concerns include: getting to
class on time, finding their lockers and remembering the
combination, finding the cafeteria and bathrooms, remembering
which class to go to next, fear of getting lost in the building,
keeping up with the class work for multiple subjects, and social
issues, including peer pressure, cliques, and bullying.
In an effort to help students make a positive transition to the
Junior High School, we have developed a Summer Orientation
Program. The Junior High Orientation is voluntary and parents are
welcome to attend. During the orientation, students will spend
time in the Junior High building, learn the location of their
homeroom, preview their class schedule, meet teachers, locate
their locker and practice the combination. Students will be given a
sample agenda sheet and will write down assignments posted in
the various Junior High classrooms to help prepare them for the
th
increased demands of 7 grade. Students will also have a chance
to meet some of their new classmates and engage in fun activities
as they learn about the Junior High.
