Logging into PowerSchool
Multiplication Wizards!
It was great sitting down with most of you and checking in on
the progress of your child. I did manage to help some of you to
log into PowerSchool to check the status of whether your child
has turned in an assignment. Here are the steps:
Jordan, Ben, Micah, Olivia Y,
Annie, Quinn, Sam, Lillian,
Olivia H, and Annabelle.
1. Go to https://ps.vail.k12.az.us/public/home.html
2. Type in your username: lastnamefirstinitial
(calhound)
3. Type in your password: civ2015 (unless you have
logged in before).
4. You should see a list of classes on the right. All of the
assignments are in language or math (not science and
social studies).
5. Click on the -- to the right of the class (under S1 – for
semester 1). The assignments that have a check are
turned in; the red triangle means it was turned in late.)

Olders Mission Statement
As role models, the olders will be
responsible, trustworthy, and kind while
having fun!
Junior Achievement Day
September 22nd a volunteer from Junior Achievement
will be sharing his business experience,
entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial
literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.
Perfect timing for us as we are diligently working on
our own class business.
Literacy – from Marisa
Math
Marisa Bragoni is the middlers teacher. I teach her 23rd graders math, and she comes into the olders to
teach Literacy.
We learned about our currency by hearing
presentations from most everyone; there are a couple
of students that have not finished yet, so please check
PowerSchool to see if your child needs to still do
their money report.
The olders have been diligently working on
writing personal narratives. They have revised
many parts looking closely at beginnings,
ending, transitions, and word choice to make
their narratives as interesting as they can. They
have spent this quarter reading realistic fiction
and we have shared the book Wonder together.
Next quarter students will read fantasy books.
They will also complete their first book report
that will be done as a home project with each
student presenting to the class. Students can get
started on this during fall break but the reports
are due on November 2, 2015.
There’s no spelling list during fall break but
students can practice family names, addresses or
every day words that give them trouble. Keep
reading and writing during fall break by playing
board games like Apples to Apples, Scrabble, or
Banagrams, writing letters/emails to family,
keeping a journal, or going to Madlibs.com for
some fun.
We are now developing our class business. Each
student is a member of group: human resources,
logistics, food, finances, and marketing.
We are doing a family pasta dinner with live music
and babysitting. We are shooting for November 13.
Science
With their science partner,
each student has been
learning about sources
of energy, as well as
renewable and
nonrenewable
resources. The seven
science stations provided
videos, slide shows,
puzzles, and hands-on
activities (like making a water
wheel).

Computer Use
Computers are used in the classroom for schoolwork only. Each student needs to earn a
“computer pass” which demonstrates that they
know how to properly care for our computers.
They show me the pass before they get a
computer. If they misuse a computer, they will
lose their pass for the day. If they misuse it
twice, they lose it for a week. And the last time,
they lose it for a quarter. We have been working
on proper keyboarding skills, through
www.powertyping.com. We just finished lesson
5. Your child can work on these at home, with
you checking to make sure their hands are in
the proper position, and you can email me the
PE
If your child does not wear PE appropriate
shoes, they will sweep around the school
during PE time. John (from the Middle
School) will be running our PE. While we will
miss Lori, John has great PE skills as well. PE
is on Thursdays, from 8:45 to 9:30. John has
the kids drink water before they head out, do
some warm-up exercises in the MPR room,
go over to the middle school field (with shade
and access to water) to play some games.
Mice Care
Over the three week break, we need someone to
take care of our three blind mice: feed them,
keep water full, and clean out their cage about
once a week. (We provide the food and cage
bedding.)
If interested, send in a note stating your
permission and the dates you are available, as
well as a phone number. Thanks!
