Newer sites are often scattered across a wide range in remote areas with underdeveloped communication infrastructures. Leading component manufacturers are designing innovative solutions that overcome the challenges of today’s oil and gas fields. These new technologies empower oil and gas producers to efficiently meet energy demand without sacrificing their bottom line. Predictive Diagnostics You can’t afford to wait for a critical failure before making upgrades or correcting dangerous issues at the wellhead. Outages can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per day in lost production, and repairs cost valuable time, money and resources. Predictive diagnostic technologies monitor the pulsing heartbeat of wellhead RTUs around the clock, and send alerts when problems like power surges, extreme weather or device malfunctions create a risk of breakdown or total failure. By proactively alerting centrally located personnel of potential risks, producers protect infrastructure and help ensure the safety of employees in the field. Wellhead monitoring technology allows workers to get real-time data both at the wellhead or remotely. Using this data, operators can make timely adjustments to keep systems within safe operation parameters. Wireless Communications Today’s oil and gas formations are often found in remote locations that are difficult and costly to monitor on site. Operators cannot afford to react to wellhead issues as they find them but need real-time updates that enable planning for a more proactive maintenance strategy that minimizes production stoppages. Conventional technologies used to control and monitor wellheads include line power or solar power on site. These solutions are costly and difficult to maintain and often do not meet hazardous certification requirements. Wireless monitoring devices eliminate the need to invest 8 Explorations | Volume 1, Issue 1 | www.wesco.com in and maintain extensive cabling for remote sites. Wireless technology isn’t new, but finding wireless components that meet Class 1 Division 2 hazardous certification requirements can be challenging. It’s critical to have supplier partners with extensive component options designed specifically for today’s oil and gas fields. Some of the industry’s most important names: Wireless technology continues to evolve, supporting more robust broadband connections that allow for live video monitoring and other bandwidthintensive applications. Highly Efficient Power Consumption Wireless components need a reliable power source. The more power used to run your wellhead monitoring solution, the higher your costs will be. Recent innovations have led to the development of extremely efficient components specifically designed to operate on minimal power over an extended time. That means uptime is increased, maintenance needs are minimized, and overall costs are reduced without sacrificing performance or reliability. Limiting maintenance work is key to effective management of remote wellheads. Today’s remote wellheads often include solar panels, solar batteries and a solar charge controller to power the unit. Newer solar batteries can sustain power for several days without sunlight. Coriolis Meters Measuring the productivity from multiple wells at drilling sites needs to be accurate, but it can be difficult and costly to do. Using coriolis meters and net oil computers that integrate new technology, producers can precisely measure the exact production of oil and gas with real-time measurements, dramatically decreasing labor, transportation and water hauling costs. Coriolis meters have two parallel flow tubes inside the device that vibrate at a resonant frequency in opposite directions. This vibration is delayed when any mass flows through the incoming tube and quickens the vibration on the outgoing side. There is a small but measurable time delay between the two ends of the tube. This measurement is used to calculate the mass flow, density and temperature through the tubes. Using mass flow and density, the volume flow can also be measured. Continued on page 10 To find a WESCO branch near you, use the branch locator on www.wesco.com. 9 Continued from previous page TRICOR has developed a coriolis flow meter that accurately measures oil and water production and oil/water cut, at flow rates up to 10,000 barrels per day. When combined with data from a gas flow meter, the coriolis meter can be used to compute the gas-to-oil ratio. TRICOR’s meter has no internal moving parts to clog or break, making them highly reliable. Carlton-Bates has a dedicated team of oil and gas specialists with decades of experience. As a result, many energy companies face the added challenge of finding ways to adequately and efficiently distribute power throughout their oil and gas fields so that they can operate the many pumps that extract crude oil from the ground. and sought a solution from Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems business that would correct voltage sags and improve power quality on the distribution feeders. The customer’s goals were to identify a reliable partner whose solution would regulate substation voltage, install easily, and offer the prospect of cost-efficient maintenance over the long term. In those rural oil and gas fields, long runs of distribution lines can lead to voltage sag issues. This can cause lapses in power to the pumps, ultimately resulting in loss of revenue. Solution Working with Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems business, the customer explored two options to correct voltage sags – OLTC transformer or single-phase voltage regulator. After evaluating the options, the customer chose Eaton’s 32-step single-phase voltage regulators to adjust system voltages. Many oil and gas companies facing the challenge of maintaining power efficiency use on-load tap changers (OLTC) to correct voltage sags on their lines. However, when one phase of the OLTC fails or requires maintenance, the entire unit is removed from service, affecting all phases. This can result in long service outages, decreased load-control flexibility and increased cost. Challenge An oil and gas custmer had been working with Eaton for several years to manage and control power in numerous oil fields, The customer noted the advantages of single-phase voltage regulators, including improved performance, individual feeder regulation, lower initial costs, anticipated lower maintenance costs in the long term, inventory savings, and shorter lead times. The driving factor in the customer’s decision was the regulator’s ability to 12 Explorations | Volume 1, Issue 1 | www.wesco.com “Properly regulating power distribution at oil and gas sites is critical to ensure companies do not experience long service outages and loss in revenue.” — Keith Blodorn, Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems regulate voltage on each individual feeder. Since this customer’s loads vary by feeder, the three single-phase voltage regulators provided an advantage over a regulated station bus which cannot respond to the demands of the individual feeder. Additionally, single-phase regulators can be easily replaced in a few hours without affecting other components utilizing bypass provisions, enabling faster restoration of service throughout the system. With lead times up to 30 weeks shorter than power-class transformers utilizing OLTCs, the regulators could arrive on site without affecting the project schedule. Moreover, this allowed the customer to specify and procure a more standard, less complex powerclass transformer. Finally, rapid maintenance and the ability to keep spare regulators on hand decrease both installation and long-term costs. Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems Division. “Voltage regulators are typically used in utility applications, but we believe these solutions provide a major benefit to customers in the oil and gas market who control their own power distribution.” Results The customer and Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems business are working to install more than 60 units in the company’s oil field. The 32-step single-phase voltage regulators are expected to save the company a significant amount of time and money by providing superior accuracy, reliability and serviceability. This can add up to significant unnecessary costs. WESCO offers best-in-class Cable Management solutions to reduce scrap, control costs, eliminate duplicate work, and optimize labor productivity. Here’s one example of how WESCO did just that for a petrochemical construction project. An engineering, procurement, and construction management contractor needed assistance managing a $12 million wire and cable order for a petrochemical construction project. Given the typical 10-15% surplus, ordering wire and cable as usual would translate into having an extra $1.2-1.8 million in product that wasn’t needed. The contractor reached out to WESCO to apply control measures and help manage the master reels at the plant job site. As a leading supply chain solutions provider with access to a vast range of capabilities, WESCO called upon its best resources for this job – the WESCO Value Creation team, WESCO Wire & Cable, WESCO’s Houston branch, and our top-notch Remote Project Management (RPM) system. These resources quickly came together to form a comprehensive cable management solution for the contractor, resulting in a number of improvements and a very happy customer. The implemented solutions reduced time, waste, and transportation costs through: • Cable cutting to field-verified circuit lengths • Customized reel labeling/tagging • Dedicated transportation and coordination of returnable reels to the manufacturer • Just-in-time delivery of more than 2,200 cable circuits (1.45M ft) • The use of WESCO’s cable management system to report the deltas between engineered circuit lengths and the actual contractorverified lengths • A reduced wire and cable surplus (less than 3%) and across-the-board job savings of more than 10% Are you ready to see how partnering with WESCO can help strengthen relationships and your bottom line?
