We are enthusiasts of all ages and from all walks of life who are enjoying a love affair with all generations of America’s premier Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964½ to the current models, we love them all. The mission of MOCSEM club members is to enjoy, collect, restore, and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the greatest cars of all time. Although Mustang ownership is not a requirement for club membership, your enthusiasm, expertise, and / or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, feature stories, Ford and Mustang news and product information, advertisements and business service locations, and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights, museum tours, visits to automotive attractions and happenings, and technical sessions. General Meetings General membership meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at: Warren Valley Banquet Center 26116 W. Warren Ave. Dearborn Heights, MI (313) 561-1040 A buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 pm for $13 perperson which includes basic beverages. (A cash bar is also available.) So come early and socialize over dinner. The dinner menu will vary every month and will be published on the event calendar at www.mocsem.com. General meetings are open to the public, often include guest speakers, and are a great way to learn more about the club and get to know our board and members. Newsletter The Accelerator is published monthly as the official newsletter of MOCSEM and is now available ONLY via the club web site at www.mocsem.com. I cannot believe how fast the year is flying by! I know I’ve said that before, but again it seems that time marches past so quickly we can hardly keep up. The car show season is in its prime as we speak, and we are less than 40 days away from Mustang Memories already – yet with a ton of stuff still to do for us to be ready for our big event. The Carlisle Ford Nationals was another great show to experience this year, just as it is every year. I was lucky enough to be part of it. I also attended the annual Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup out in Colorado, as well as the inaugural Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction event in Connecticut. What a show that turned out to be! This inaugural event was a total sellout both for tickets and consignments -- first time that happened in the 45-year history of Barrett-Jackson! The three-day auction attracted more than 90,000 auction guests, over 1,700 bidders and total sales of over $26 million. It was nice for east coast enthusiasts to finally land a Barrett-Jackson mega auction. Back to Mustang Memories 2016: If you haven't yet signed up to volunteer to work the show or haven’t yet registered your car, please do so NOW to ensure another successful event for both you and the club! We need every member to come out and support the club on at least this one day each year, and for 2016 that day Sunday, August 21st in Dearborn. Yes, our venue had to be changed back to Ford World Headquarters, but most everyone is pleased and is super excited about that! So Club Ambassador Mike Sové [email protected] 248.355.1477 Trustee Bill Smith [email protected] 734.755.8251 Editor John Clor [email protected] 313.886.7434 please come out, work a shift or two to assist the club and then enjoy the rest of the day with your car at the show. I look forward to another amazing year for Mustang Memories, which remains a big pride point for MOCSEM! --- Mike Rey Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 4 General Meeting Minutes begins on Saturday at 8 a.m. He encouraged all to cheer on the Ford GT against Ferrari and the rest of the world. Board Reports Lisa Sielski, Secretary – No report Rich Kocan, Treasurer – Reported on the club’s current finances and balances By Lisa Sielski MOCSEM Secretary MOCSEM June Membership Meeting Minutes Tues., June 14, 2016, 6:30 p.m., hosted by Motor City Solutions, Taylor, MI Board Members Present: Lisa Sielski, Rich Kocan, Sarah Cassette, Jeff Beyar, John Clor, Bill Smith, Mike Sove. Board Members Absent: Mike Rey, Jennifer Smith, Tracey Rey. John Clor, Editor – Meeting was opened by John Clor, Editor, who announced that he was standing in for Mike Rey and Jennifer Smith to run the meeting, yet at the same time would be serving as the meeting’s guest speaker later in the evening. John began by giving a special “thank you” to Jeremy Lester, the operations manager for Motor City Solutions, and his entire staff for hosting our June meeting at his facility. Motor City Solutions did a great job arranging the meeting area with tables, tablecloths, candy bowls, chairs, and “Welcome. MOCSEM” signage. Several adjacent long tables were loaded with boxes stacked high with several different varieties of super-large gourmet pizzas – and everyone in attendance was invited to join in an all-you-can eat pizza dinner, with plenty of cold soft drinks and water included. After the call for “seconds” went out and the dinner wound down, John called up Mr. Lester to have him explain all of the services that are available for vehicle owners at Motor City Solutions. John then announced Mustang Memories th Workers Signup will go live tomorrow (June 15 ) on the website and that Mike Sove will be bringing around a signup sheet to each table for the names of volunteers. Show Committee Heads were then asked to come up to speak, and Tony Gulley came up to discuss working Security at the show. Rich Teeple of the scholarship committee was then called up to talk about our chili cook off fundraiser, and to introduce a new member of the scholarship committee. John Clor then made an announcement that members can watch the Ford GT return to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans this coming weekend via live race feeds being broadcast at the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn. The first special program sponsored by Ford Performance Sarah Cassette, Membership – Announced that our current paid membership remains at around 600 Jeff Beyar, Social Director – Jeff reviewed plans for the Ford Yacht Club Meet and Cruise on Grosse Ile, and announced that while food will be available there, donations will be accepted to help offset the cost to the club. He also talked about the MOCSEM “Ponies In The Park” plans for the Downriver Cruise along Fort Street. Bill Smith, Trustee – No report Mike Sove, Club Ambassador – Reminded all that a sign-up sheet is available for working the Mustang Memories show, and again thanked Motor City Solutions for hosting our June meeting. John Clor, Editor – John asked that all members submit stories and photos of their Mustangs to appear both as the cover story “Member of the Month” feature in upcoming issues of The Accelerator club newsletter, as well as in the “Ford Fan Spotlight” in the Fast News From Ford Performance e-mail newsletter and in the “Enthusiasts” section of FordPerformance.com. John then said that instead of making a formal presentation as Guest Speaker, his topic tonight will be, “Ask John Anything.” To start the discussion, he brought questions submitted to him by attendees at the Carlisle Ford Nationals, and asked that any questions that MOCSEM members had about Ford, Ford Performance and the Ford Mustang be brought up to him during his talk. John responded to numerous questions – except those that pertained to “future product.” There were no Certificate Presentations nor New Members identified at tonight’s meeting. Swap & Sell items were discussed, and donated corded Mustang medallion bracelets were distributed FREE of charge. 50/50 and Free Dinner Winners – In the 50/50 Raffle, $91 was won by Jim Carolan and $45 by Rich Kocan. Free Dinner winners were announced, and The Bucket went to Mike Sove. To close, a group photo was taken. There being no further business, the General Meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at Warren Valley in Dearborn Heights. --- Respectfully submitted by Lisa Sielski, Secretary Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 5 MOCSEM Calendar By Jeff Beyar MOCSEM Social Director Yes, it’s July Already! The height of show and cruise season is now here. I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer so far and is attending as many Mustang-related events as possible. In case you may have missed it, we had a successful Downriver “pre-cruise” kickoff event at the Ford Yacht Club on Friday, June 24, and a great day on Fort Street at Kennedy Memorial Park for our annual “Ponies in the Park” gathering on Saturday during the Downriver Cruise. The city of Lincoln Park was very gracious to offer the park to MOCSEM for our members-only parking. This is another sweet benefit of being a MOCSEM member. For the yacht club cruise, our Editor, John Clor of Ford Performance up with a Shelby GT350 Pace Car that was recently used during the FireKeepers Casino 400 NASCAR race at MIS. With its Competition Orange paint, Sport Exhaust and yellow-and-white strobe light ablaze, there was no better car to lead the cruise all around the perimeter of the island. We had burgers and hot dogs catered for members. We collected donations for food as attendees arrived rather than charge a flat rate. We did pretty well with the donations but the club still carried about a little more than half of the total food bill. But by all accounts it was a great weekend for all. As you might expect, we are ramping up big time for our annual Mustang Memories show the day after the Woodward Dream Cruise. The planning is in full swing and it looks like we’re going to have another memorable show at the Ford World Headquarters. Make sure to register, if you haven’t done so already! Of course, this is MOCSEM so you’ll find many more events listed on the calendar on our web site. And as a reminder, this month’s general meeting is on Tuesday, th July 12 at Warren Valley. On the menu is Tacos, Rice, Beans and Taco Salad, with brownies for desert. Our special Guest Speaker is Ford’s Ralph Arning from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. As always, there will be a lot of club news and information shared, so bring them ponies out and enjoy an evening with your MOCSEM friends. -- Jeff Beyar MOCSEM Social Director Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 6 . Motor City Musings By John Clor MOCSEM Editor It’s Really Just All About Making Mustang Memories Yes, this month’s newsletter is again a few days behind schedule, but I must tell you that June-July-August is the busiest time of year for me, with the most days spent on the road than at any other time of the year. As you know, my role as Enthusiast Communications Manager for Ford Performance isn’t just a matter of managing the content for emails and the “Enthusiasts” section of FordPerformance.com. A big part of the job is also doing “outreach” at shows and events across the country. That usually involves driving to club shows and setting up a 10x10 Ford Performance display tent where I’ll do a daylong “Meet & Greet” and a Mustang poster giveaway (the latter usually thanks to the efforts of my wife, Jenny, who more often than not comes along with me and keeps our display tent going even when I’m off taking pictures, checking out the cars with attendees, or giving a speech before the show awards presentation. That face-to-face time with real owners and enthusiasts is the big difference-maker for our marketing program, as it provides a tangible, personal connection with our Ford clubs and loyalists. While I enjoy meeting and talking with all of you, there is one thing I often get to do at Mustang shows that makes the whole trip worthwhile: Whenever I see a little kid at the Mustang show who is in tow with mom or dad, I go right up to them and say, “HI! -- Do YOU have a Mustang?” While they’ll often look up at me speechless, their parents will often answer for them: “No, but their Daddy (or Mommy) has a Mustang!” But I’ll look back at that little child and say, “Well, Ford Motor Company wants YOU to have a new Mustang!” Then I reach into my pocket and hand them a 1/64scale die-cast of a Race Red 2015 Mustang GT in a little box, and tell them, “This is YOUR Mustang – not daddy’s or mommy’s, OK?” – YOU SHOULD SEE THEIR EYES LIGHT UP! (It’s the coolest feeling to make their trip to the Mustang show so worthwhile by being able to come home with a toy Mustang that some guy from Ford gave them! I hope they recall fondly what might be their first “Mustang Memory” – what a rush! Speaking of Mustang Memories, I can’t tell you how happy I am that the Mustang II National Reunion portion of our show has already set a new single-event record for Mustang II showfield registrations – we have more than 50 cars scheduled to appear with more than a month still to go! Add to that the runaway success of the “Color War” promotion between the Red Mustang Registry (RMR) and the Yellow Mustang Registry (YMR), and that means we’ll have well over 200 more cars that will appear at Memories than we would have had without including these two special events! Oh, sure, I’d heard that one of our club haters and old Facebook hijackers had posted that it’s “epic” that the Color War has “only” drawn that many extra cars – except that most of the Mustang club shows I attend each year would consider drawing a total of 200 cars for their entire event a huge success! Not sure how many members that this MOCSEM Haters Club has, or how many registrations they have for their show (oh, wait – that’s right, they have none of either!). Some of these folks haven’t paid dues for years yet show up at member-benefit only shows like they still belong. But living in the peanut gallery and taking shots at the folks who don’t do things the way you want is just not cool. The problem with spewing hate it, it’s like taking poison and expecting the other person to die. The answer remains, if you’re smarter and better – start your own club and knock yourself out making it bigger and more rewarding than your competition. For the rest of us who happen to actually know about club events on the national level, Mustang Memories remains one of the “must-see” annual shows anywhere, and it’s all thanks to dedicated MOCSEM members who take pride in participating in one of the finest Ford- Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 7 based clubs on the planet. The views and opinions he expresses here are his own. If you have a story idea, submission, suggestion or even a comment, send it to John via his home email – [email protected]. MOCSEM MEMBER OF THE MONTH 1969 Mach 1 of Bill Musser Has Seen Exciting Times Bill Musser’s Hot 1969 Mustang Mach 1 me how fast we are going. I looked at the speedo and told him, “About 132 mph or so” (because the needle was buried at 120 mph). But John Henry replied, “Well, whoever is behind you is catching up to you!” I looked in the rearview mirror and all I saw were two headlights coming towards me. So I pulled over to the side of road and waited. The two headlights pulled behind me, and the next thing I knew, a big red light in middle of car’s roof was now on! It was a State Trooper in a Plymouth Fury with a Hemi – one of last six on road back then. The trooper came up to the driver’sside and asked for my license, registration, and proof of insurance – and then told me to get out of the car. Once I got out, the trooper asked me to step to the back of the Mustang. Then he talked to my friends in the car. When the trooper was done questioning them, he walked back to me and asked me to go and sit in passenger seat of the police car. He got back into his patrol car and asked me, “Do you know why you are sitting in the front seat and not the back seat?” I said I didn’t know. Then he showed me the radar gun: It read “146.” The trooper said he couldn’t believe my Mustang was that fast. (Back then it was a stock daily driver!) Just like all cars, my 1969 Mach 1 has a history. I have owned her since 1981, when it was my dally driver to and from work. I recall the day I bought it. It was for sale for $1,500 and I talked the man down to $1,350 – which was still a lot of money back then, as I was making $3.65 an hour making pizza. I have two cool stories I about the car I’d like to share. The first was from back when I used to hang around Big Boy’s in Lincoln Park with my friends. One night I was there at 4:30 a.m. with my friend, Sam, his brother John Henry, and Mike. We wanted to go for a ride in my Mustang so we headed south on I-75 toward Flat Rock. My friend John Henry said, “Let’s see how fast this Mustang will go!” Next thing I knew, John Henry asked Then the trooper asked me how my driving record was, am and I told him it was good. He called-in my license, and it came back clean. The officer explained to me Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 8 that he couldn’t write how fast I was going on the bottom of the ticket, because that number would raise questions from his boss, so was written up for a 62 mph in a 55 mph zone. The fine was in the 5-over-the-limit category, and he trooper said that he did it for me because I stopped and pulled over for him and he didn’t have to chase me at high-speed. The officer told me not to fight the ticket in court and to just pay it. (Yes, he gave me a really big break.) Mustangs and Fords in The News Editor’s Note: In case you’re living under a rock and for some unexplainable reason don’t yet get the weekly “Fast News From Ford Performance” email, we’ll choose a few interesting Mustang media items to appear in this space each month you may have missed: Finally, the officer asked me to open the hood of my Mustang so he could see my engine. I then asked if he could open the hood on the state police car, too, which he did for us. It was last of the Hemi engine-powered highway patrol cars for the state police. Needless to say, I definitely paid the ticket on time! Ford Mustang continues its big lead in the 2016 model-year sales race The other story I’d like to share is from back when I used to drag race the Mach 1 on weekends in the city of Lincoln Park. I remember one night when I raced a guy in a Nova and beat him, and the next thing I knew I saw blue-and-red lights pulling over the guy in Nova. I high-tailed it out of there quickly, and headed toward home. I lived on street corner, so the cops knew my car. About 10 minutes after getting home, two police cars pulled up outside my house. You guessed it: They were looking for me! The officers were knocking on my back door, and woke my dad up. My father answered the door and the cops asked him where I was. He told them I had been home all evening and was now sleeping upstairs. One of the officers walked over to my car and had put his hand on hood of the Mustang. Since it was still warm, the officer asked mu dad who was just driving the Mustang? My father told him that he had driven the car about a half-hour earlier to go to the store to get some milk for my mom. After the officers left, my dad had a long talk with me about drag racing in the city. I don’t think it worked. There were many more speeding tickets after that! --Bill Musser At the halfway point of 2016, Mustang continues to win the sales race against its segment competitors – for the 20th consecutive month. Meanwhile, sales of the Chevy Camaro continued to slide in June, dropping under 5,000 cars for the first time in more than 18 months – and trailing the Dodge Challenger for the second month in a row. In June, Ford sold 9,776 Mustangs as the sales for the latest generation model have started to slow after two years but with 62,965 Mustangs out the door in 2016, the original pony car still had a big lead over its competition. Also in June, the Challenger notched 5,479 units, giving Dodge a total of 34,607 for the year. Camaro had another slow month, selling 4,969 cars. But with 36,834 sold so far in 2016, that was enough to maintain a slim lead over the Challenger.
