400 Years Under 8 Flags
Amelia Island is Florida’s Golden Isle which
the French visited, the Spanish developed,
the English named and the Americans tamed.
It is the only U.S. location to have been under
eight different flags.
French 1562-1565: The island’s first
recorded European visitor was France’s Jean
Ribault on May 3, 1562. He named the
island "Isle de Mai." Two years later, Rene de
Laudonniere founded Fort Caroline nearby.
Spanish 1565-1763: The Spanish, under
Pedro Menendez, defeated the French and
founded St. Augustine in 1565. During their
long dominion, the Spanish concentrated on
educating and converting the natives, and
the island name of "Santa Maria" was derived
from a mission here. The mission and settlement were destroyed in 1702 by the English.
Oglethorpe renamed the island "Amelia" after
the daughter of George II.
English 1763-1783: The island became
known as "Egmont" from the Earl of Egmont’s
large indigo plantation. Revolutionary forces
invaded in 1777 and 1778.
Spanish 1783-1821 (with 3 interruptions):
After the Revolution, Britain ceded Florida
back to Spain. Jefferson’s Embargo Act of
1807, which closed U.S. ports to foreign shipping, made the border town of Fernandina a
center of smuggling and piracy.
Patriots - With secret U.S. blessings, the
so-called "Patriots of Amelia Island" overthrew the Spanish and hoisted their own flag
on March 17, 1812. They replaced it with the
U.S. flag the next day, but Spain demanded
return of the island. The Spanish completed
Fort San Carlos in 1816.
Green Cross of Florida - To liberate
Florida from Spanish control, Sir Gregor
MacGregor seized Fort San Carlos in June,
1817, and hoisted his Green Cross standard.
After his withdrawal, the Spanish attempted
to regain control but were repelled by forces
led by Jared Irwin and Ruggles Hubbard.
Mexican Rebel Flag - Irwin and Hubbard
were joined by the pirate Luis Aury, who
gained control and raised the Mexican rebel
flag. U.S. troops occupied the island in
December, 1817, and held it "in trust for
Spain."
United States 1821 - present (with one
interruption): Spain ceded Florida to the
United States in 1821. Work began on Fort
Clinch in 1847. In the 1850s, Fernandina
moved from Old Town to become the terminus for Florida’s first cross-state railroad.
Organized by Senator David Yulee, the railroad ran from Fernandina to Cedar Key.
Confederate - The Confederates took
over Fort Clinch in April, 1861, but federal
troops regained it in March, 1862, and occupied it for the duration of the Civil War.
The
Golden
Years
1875-1900:
Fernandina's Historic District retains the
evidence of the town's greatest period of
prosperity. Tourists flocked here via steamers direct from New York to stay in two elegant hotels. Shipping boomed with lumber,
phosphate and naval stores. The SpanishAmerican War fostered gunrunning from the
local port, and troops again occupied Fort
Clinch. After the turn of the century, tourism
surged southward.
1900-present: Early in the 20th century, the modern shrimping industry was
founded here, pioneered by Mike Salvador,
Salvatore Versaggi and Antonio Poli. Shrimp,
oyster and crab canneries prospered until
the Depression. The 30s brought two pulp
mills, Container Corporation of America (now
RockTenn) and Rayonier. In recent times,
sparked by Omni Amelia Island Plantation
and the Ritz-Carlton, the island has gained
national attention as a resort.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island
Finalizes $65 Million Renovation
The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island recently
finalized a five-year, $65 million investment
with the redesign of its 445 guest rooms. The
initial phases added a lavish spa, additional
ballroom space, a sophisticated sports bar
and updated restaurant concepts.
James McManemon, the resort's general
manager says, "This is the last phase of a
five-year investment to enhance our guest's
experience. Our vision is to capture a sense
of place that is comfortable and elegant."
The coastal design by Wilson Associates is inspired by tide lines that mark the
dune-lined barrier island beach. The guest
is greeted with dark mahogany wood floor
at entry resembling the wet sand and brown
reeds pushed to shore at high tide. A carpet
design evokes an image of wind-swept sand
leads to the dramatic ceiling to floor balcony
doors overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
"We approached this extensive project with
a comprehensive plan, but the cornerstone of
the investment is our continued dedication to
an exceptional guest experience for travelers
and meeting groups," says McManemon.
The final phase of the investment was
completed over the last 18 months with a
full exterior makeover, the installation of
energy efficient, storm-proof sliding balcony doors and refreshing guest lodging.
"Guests will be greeted with room interiors that take a cue from the sea, integrating
natural colors, shapes and textures found at
the beach." The new floor-to-ceiling glass
balcony doors reveal stunning views of the
coastline, additional natural lighting and
allow private access to the outdoors. The
overall look is a dramatic conclusion to the
five-year investment in enhancing the guest
experience.

Sea Oats: Protectors of the Dunes
Newcomers to Amelia Island are always impressed by the beauty of the sea
oats growing on the primary dunes along
the oceanfront. But this hearty grass
(Uniola paniculata) performs a far more
important function than adding its good
looks to the scenery. It helps to hold the
sand and protect the dunes from wind
and erosion.
Since sand dunes are so dry, a 6-inch
sea oats plant may have roots which are
five feet long. This long root system helps
stabilize the dunes against erosion. In addition, the plant above ground can catch
windblown sand to increase the size of
the dune.
So important are the sea oats that Florida law prohibits the picking of them at
any time. Driving on the dunes is also
prohibited. Also, people are urged to
use boardwalks when walking over the
dunes in an effort to preserve the beachprotecting sea oats.

Fernandina moved from Old Town to
its present location to become the terminus of Florida's first cross-state railroad,
constructed 1856-61 from Fernandina to
Cedar Key. In 1973, a 30-block area was
named an Historic District in the National
Register of Historic Places because of the
amazing preservation of late Victorian
architecture. In 1987, the District was
expanded to include 50 blocks.
Start at the docks on Centre Street.
Just east of the docks is the Depot of
Florida's first cross-state railroad. This
second depot, opened in 1899, now houses the Amelia Island Visitor Center.
Across from the Depot is the Duryee
Building, constructed in 1882, now home
of the Marina Restaurant.
On the NW corner of Centre and 2nd
is The Palace, Florida's oldest saloon
in the same location. The 1878 building
originally housed a haberdashery; the
saloon opened in 1903.
On the SW corner of Centre and 2nd
is the Dotterer Building, built as a grocery about 1878 and now home of Shoe
Visions.
On the NE corner of Centre and 2nd
is The Chandlery, built following the
1876 fire with third floor added about
1901. The ground floor is now home for
Pineapple Patch.

House, built around 1919 by William
Newton Murdaugh, who also built the
house just to the north at 25 S. 3rd in 1923.
The Murdaugh House was completely
renovated in 2005 and is now a restaurant called, appropriately, 29 South.
On the NE corner of Centre and 3rd is

On the NE corner of Centre and 4th
is our 1912 Post Office. Next to it is the
Lesesne House, built in 1860 and added
to the National Register of Historic Places
in 1973.
The Nassau County Courthouse at
Centre at 5th was built in 1891 and is
regarded by the State as "the finest surviving Victorian courthouse in Florida."
At Centre and 7th is the Horsey
House, built about 1902.
Turn right at S. 7th for four blocks.
The Thompson House is the first of
three houses on the right built for members of the prominent Thompson family
by architect John Hedges. Built circa 1872,
it was the home of state senator William
Naylor Thompson. The Lucy Cottage
was built circa 1877 for Thompson's sister, Miss Lucy O. Thompson.
The last of the Thompson houses,
built in 1882 for the senator's brother
Pratt, was the first brick house in the city
to be used solely as a residence. Story has
it that now it is the haunt of Fernandina's
Nassau County Courthouse 1891

rock ledge fishing. Most deep sea boats
will anchor or drift directly over the bottom structure while fishing right on the
bottom with live cigar minnows, pinfish,
mullet or menhaden. 50-lb. fishing tackle
is recommended when hooking giant reef
fish and reeling them up and away from
the dangers of the deep water structure.
Live bait trolling offshore is also exciting during the summer. Here, a variety
of striking fish including Atlantic sailfish,
king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, dolphin,
wahoo, blackfin tuna, cobia, barracuda and
amberjack will produce an exciting battle.
One of the more productive offshore
fish spots includes FA fish haven, which is
located only eight miles offshore of the St.
Mary's jetty rocks. FA fish haven includes
several large areas of hard bottoms, paired
with lime rock ledges and sunken wrecks.
The "FA Barge" almost always holds rodbending game fish. Other popular offshore
fish havens include FB, FC, HH, the Nassau

fishing waters are marked with GPS coordinates on the local offshore fishing charts.

ture has warmed up into the low 80's.
However, tides and water clarity become
major factors when targeting Northeast
Florida's trout and redfish. By far the best
tide is a high in-coming tide that arrives
just after sunrise. Here, clear water conditions allow both redfish and sea trout to
easily locate your surface plug. The high
falling tide also offers excellent topwater
opportunities as baitfish begin to fall out
of flooded spartina marshes onto nearby
shallow mud flats.
Another key factor when targeting topwater trout and reds is the availability of
baitfish. Look for schooling menhaden,
mullet and glass minnows, and you will
be sure to find trout and redfish nearby. I
can safely say with the lack of baitfish, you
would be much better off cranking up your
big motor and exploring new waters.
Once you have located both numerous schools of bait fish and clean water,
look for ambush points where baitfish are
migrating past a marsh point, the mouth
of a feeder creek, through a deep slough,
or past the deep side of an oyster bar. Cast
your surface lure up tide of the ambush
point, working it slowly past the ambush
point and hang on!
Sea trout will frequently come up from
under your surface lure during the strike,
while redfish will often poke their head out
of the water and come crashing down on
your surface plug. In both cases, patience
in setting the hooks of your surface plug
is critical. Many skilled topwater fishermen will actually wait until they feel the
pressure of the hooked fish on their rod tip
before setting the hooks. Setting the hooks
too soon will often result in pulling the
plug away from the foraging red or trout.
Some of the more productive surface
plugs include the Storm "Chug Bug",
Heddon "Zara Spook", Bomber "BadonkA-Donk", Rapala "Skitter Walk" and the
traditional Smithwick "Devil's Horse".
Best color patterns include, black back/
white belly, red head/white body or chartreuse back/white belly. Finally, work your
surface plugs slowly while producing a lot
of noise!
Summer surf fishing along Amelia
Island beaches produces catches of pompano, whiting, puppy drum, sea trout, redfish, flounder, bluefish and more. Fishing
on the bottom with fresh shrimp, live sand
fleas, cut pieces of blue crab or fresh squid
is key. Best tide includes the last of the
in-coming and all of the falling tide. Look
for some of the best surf fishing action to
come from where waves are breaking over
shallow bars in the surf, or where run outs
have created a deep nearby slough.
Non-Florida residents 16 and older will
need to purchase a Florida non-resident
saltwater fishing license when fishing from
shore, piers, bridges and from a boat. This
also includes crabbing. For more fishing
and charter information, call Amelia Angler
Outfitters, 111 Centre St., (904) 261-2870.

GRILLED INDIAN CORN
FROM: The late Helen Litrico
BAKED FISH
8 ears of fresh corn
3 tsps. ground cumin
3 tsps. ground coriander
2 tsps. salt
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. curry powder
Dash of marjoram
Dash of turmeric
Dash of cayenne pepper
1 stick butter, melted
1 lime, cut into eight wedges
Fillets of your favorite fish
(redfish, grouper or snapper works best)
Black Pepper
Oregano
2 potatoes, thinly sliced
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tomatoes, thinly sliced
Half a lemon
Half cup dry white wine
Shuck corn, place in a large pot, cover
with water and refrigerate at least an hour so
the moisture will penetrate the cob.
Combine the next eight ingredients and
mix well. Mix about 1/3 of the spice mixture
with melted butter in one service bowl. In second bowl, put the remaining dry spice mix with
lime wedges.
Cook the corn directly on grill over medium
coals, turning frequently until slightly browned
all around. For serving, dip the pastry brush
into the butter-spice mix and brush up and
down the ear of corn. If you'd like more of
the spicy taste, dip a lime wedge into the dry
spices, then rub and squeeze the lime up and
down the ear of corn.
This is a delicious twist on eating everyday
corn-on-the-cob, but it's not for timid palates!
FROM: Gino Litrico
Spray a shallow baking pan with Pam or
other non-stick spray. Put a layer of the sliced
potatoes on the bottom, add about a quarter
inch of water, cover and pre-cook in oven for
20 minutes.
Rinse, drain and pat fish dry on paper towels. Sprinkle with pepper and a little oregano.
Put fish fillets in pan on top of potatoes, then
add a layer of sliced onions, then a layer of
sliced tomatoes. Add a little more oregano, if
desired, and squeeze the half lemon over the
entire dish.
Cover and bake in a 450° oven until the
onions are wilting. Add half a cup of dry white
wine and cover. Bake till the alcohol burns off
and the onions are done. If too much liquid remains, remove cover and bake at 500° for a
few minutes.

Wadsworth's Amelia Island - Owner
Brenda DeMarco has teamed up with her
daughter, Angela DeMarco, to launch
their own label for men's and women's
sportswear, featuring Fernandina Beach's
favorite mascot, a shrimp.
"In July of 2011, Angela drew a shrimp
for me because we were discussing the
fact that, in all my years of buying, I have
never come across a shrimp logo on clothing," explains DeMarco. That drawing
remained on her refrigerator for months,
until one day DeMarco decided to take
it to work. "That same morning someone
came in to sell me a shirt with a turtle on it,
and then later someone else came in with
a salmon logo. Finally, I thought 'We'll just
have to make our own shrimp logo!'"
"The new line is meant to promote a
sense of pride in our home town and in
the importance of supporting our local
community," says DeMarco. Stop in and
see the complete line of shirts, hats and
more. 204 Centre Street. 277-1162.
