Beauty And Brains.
And Power, Luxury, Performance...
If you’re tired of compromise, maybe you’re speaking the wrong language.
Renowned for combining luxury with performance, both Aston Martin and
Jaguar represent the finest in driving excellence with the latest in technology and manufacturing. Perhaps it’s time to try something English.

Jaguar Tracks Welcome New Members!
Madame President
The 43rd Concours d’Elegance of the San Diego Jaguar Club was the
highlight of the month! We had 43 cars entered for judging, with another
24 on display for a total of 67 cars on the field. The JOC of LA came
down in force with 15 cars and took away several awards. Frank Gauer,
of the JOC, told me they just had to save face after we showed up at
their Concours last year and took away 6 awards (Please see the winners
list later in this issue). The weather was near perfect, we got four new
memberships, and drank 6 bottles of champagne with our strawberries
and chocolates. Thank you to Hazel & Vic for making the myriad of arrangements! Thank you to everyone who brought their cars for judging
and display! Thank you also Judging Team, Hospitality, Registration,
and Scorekeeping Team. And thank you to all our sponsors who donated
prizes for our entrants.
On September 8th we still plan to drive to Oceanside to go to Finnigan’s
Pub for the Concours Afterglow. Here’s the drive schedule for the day:
10:30 meet at Jaguar Kearny Mesa
10:45 leave to caravan up the coast together
11:10 stop at the Von’s parking lot off of Lomas
Santa Fe Dr. in Solana Beach to pick up cars
11:15 leave Von’s to finish the route up the coast
11:45 arrive at the Mortland’s for champagne
12:30 leave the Mortland’s for lunch at the Pub
Please call Bruce Mortland for lunch reservations.
If you want to drive with us, just show up at Jaguar Kearny Mesa. We’re
not taking names for the drive.
After lunch on September 8th several people are planning to drive up
together to Redondo Beach to spend the night and go to the JOC LA
Concours at the South Coast Botanical Gardens on Sunday the 9th. We’d
like to do even better this year than last in terms of both the number of
cars making the trip and the number of awards we won.
Something similar is being planned for the IEJC Concours in October.
We are caravanning to Idyllwild early on October 5th, Friday afternoon,
and spending the weekend in Idyllwild for the car show on Saturday
the 6th , then driving down to Fallbrook the morning of the 7th to attend
British Car Day.
British Car Day is the club’s October event. Last year there were 62 Jaguars in attendance, the biggest marque on the field! If you are interested
in making either of those trips to the Concours send in your registration
forms to the various clubs and make your hotel reservations right away.
Please call Stick Holmes for more information regarding the meeting
times and departure places.
If you don’t make the road trip to Idyllwild there are still plenty of car
things to do in town the weekend of October 6th and 7th. It is the annual
Coronado Speed Fest at North Island. We will be getting parking passes for
a car corral. As soon as they are available we’ll start passing them out.
Also, in mid-October is another opportunity to go to a Concours – the
Central Coast Club in San Luis Obispo, in conjunction with XKs Unlimited, are putting on a 5-day party called the Running of the Jaguars. Look
for the flyer in this issue.
You can certainly get in enough Concours time to make the national
competition of you wish. And the time behind the wheel of your Jaguar
to do all of this is a dream come true!
So a driving we will go …..

December No Meeting
Saturday, October 6, is the Inland Empire Jaguar Club
Concours in beautiful Idyllwild. Those of us who went
last year had a great time. We stayed in cabins with fireplaces and ate well at the various eateries. As I was making
reservations I realized that the following day is our club
picnic at British Car Day in Fallbrook. So I made plans to
drive to Idyllwild the day before, spend the night, show my
car Saturday, spend that night, then Sunday morning, drive
from there to Fairbrook Farms in Fallbrook for the picnic.
(about a 1:35 drive)
If this sounds like a fun plan to you, make your reservation
at Idyllwild now. That same week end is also Wine Tasting
and Art Walk so lodging will fill up fast. Here is a link to
the inn where most of us will be staying:
http://www.idyllwildinn.com/
I have made reservations at the Gastrognome restaurant for
the club for both Friday and Saturday night: http://www.
gastrognome.com/ Let me know if you want to join us for
dinner so I can alert the restaurant.
Sunday morning we will Jagavan (Jag caravan) from Idyllwild to the British Car Day Picnic starting at 7:45. I will
provide maps of the route in the unlikely event we become
separated. Registration forms for both events are included
in this publication. Even if you don’t want to show your
car, it will be a fun two day event.
If you want to be included in the dinner and or Jagavan, please let me know ASAP.

have created thousands of spires, pillars and rocky
temples
• Arches National Park, nowhere else in the world
will you see a greater number of natural stone arches
and imaginative stone formations
• Capitol Reef National Park with it’s dome-like stone
formations
• Canyonlands National Park, the deep watery crevices that form and erode in goose necks throughout
the land.

previous participant has exclaimed, “One runs out of
superlatives to describe the scenery!”

Member’s Photo of the Month
I didn’t get a club member’s photo by the printer’s deadline (several are on the way), so I thought I’d take this opportunity to show you the latest addition to my (the editor’s) stable. This one I acquired just a couple of weeks ago. It’s a
2006 XK8, ebony with cashmere interior. I got it from an auction with only 13,000 miles. It’s a keeper!

The SDJC held it’s 43rd Annual Concours

Katherine Partain, Roger Townsend, Marilyn and Randy Prine present our donation to Arlene Wyrick, Development Department of the
Zoological Society
Zoo Donation on a Tuesday Morning
by Marilyn Prine
On August 26, 1979, the San Diego Jaguar Club held its fifteenth
annual Concours d’Elegance at the magnificent Hilton Inn on Mission Bay. Our club raised $1,000, which was matched by Jaguar,
Rover, Triumph and West Coast Distributors, and the funds were
used to purchase a live Jaguar for the San Diego Zoo. Joan Embrey,
Publicity Director of the San Diego Zoological Society, brought
several animals for us to ooh and aah over.
Eighty-nine Jaguar enthusiasts attended the awards banquet that
evening, including our honored guest Fred Horner of JCNA. President Randy Prine and Fred Horner presented the checks, totaling
$2,000 to Joan Embrey. And thus began our club’s tradition of
supporting our very own “Felis Onca”, a.k.a., Orson the beautiful
black Jaguar.
Tuesday, August 21, 2007, President Katherine Partain, Roger
Townsend, Marilyn and Randy Prine presented Arlene Wyrick,
Development Department of the Zoological Society, our check for
$1,670, bringing to 28, the number of years the SDJC has supported
Orson, the Jaguar. All the while, Orson paced majestically back
and forth across the expanse of his enclosure, as if he seemed to
know he was being honored.

Can You Top This?
An article regarding early model XK8 convertible top problems
By Tom Coyle
Reprinted from “The Jaguars Roar”
May 2007
I hesitate to refer to this as a “Tech”
article, as I am almost a beginner
when it comes to things mechanical. As they say, “Necessity is the
Mother of Invention”.
Since the day I bought my 1999
XK 8 convertible, I have been unable to completely close my top
(via the console button), and in the
fall several years ago took it to my
local dealer. After taking a look,
they informed me that “the fluid
was leaking” and I just better get
used to pulling it closed manually
as the expense to pullout all the
lines and clean the interior would
be cost-prohibitive. I thought it
odd that they could not point out
where it was leaking exactly, but
as time went on I became aware
of the “Roadfly” forum for XK8’s
(http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/jaguar/jaguar_xk8/) and
began to routinely read it. There
I found plenty of information and
help about a wide variety oftopics;
including the issue of leaking tops
(some call it “roofs’).
For some reason several weeks ago
I decided to get serious about the issue ofthe top and began to research
the topic. I found that the most
likely cause for this non-latching
was that the fluid in the pump reservoir was “gelling.” (Something
that happens over time, similar to
old gasoline tunring into a shellac-like substance.) I pulled off the
carpet over the right rear trunk area
exposing the reservoir, the “in”
line, and the “out” line. Of note,
I found no leak and the fluid level
was exactly where my RoadFly
pals had indicated it should be-right
between the upper and lower mark
line on the back end of the reservoir. I immediately concluded that
the “leak” mentioned by the dealer
was nonexistent.
fluids are identical in composition.
We also decided to lightly lubricate
the elbow joints with the top partway down. I ran the top through
the entire cycle and voila! It closed
all by itself! Okay, I did have to
press the button a second time as
it approached the roof line but I
was very happy indeed to finally
accomplish something that I had
been assured was beyond reasonable effort to repair. Foot note: I did
learn one day after my celebratory
top fix that I should have removed
the header rail, perhaps even taken
the rooflatch out, and then flushed
the lines to assure a complete line
flush. So ... my newfound mechanic
sense of accomplishment may well
last longer than this fluid flush, but,
you know what? I am “okay” with
this, especially if it still works! £
My neighbor and I loosened the
top nut (brass) and then, holding
an empty water bottle to the loose
hose, we cycled through the fluid
by pressing the convertible top button repeatedly until we had gone
through about a quart and-a-half
(i.e. equal to a magnum-size wine
bottle). The fluid color started
to corne out as dark green, with
tinges of black, but
Burma Shave
as we poured in
new fluid, it turned
green. Thanks to

San Diego Jaguar Club Board of Directors
Minutes from the July 18, 2007 Meeting
President Katherine Partain called the meeting to order at 6:37 PM.
Board Members present: Katherine Partain, Vic Chang, Curtis Parker, Jim Roberts, and Paul Novak, plus Hazel Beck,* Dick Cavicke,* and Rich “Stick” Holmes* (* = functional
chair).
A. Board Member Reports
1. Secretary’s Report: Motion was made by Curtis and seconded by Vic, to approve the May 16 and June 13, 2007 meeting minutes, each with no changes. Motion
carried unanimously.
2. Treasurer’s Report: Grant Rummell was not at the meeting but he provided the Treasurer’s report to Katherine prior to the meeting. She distributed the Balance Sheet
and Profit and Loss Reports to the Board, along with a statement from Grant about the financial state of the club. We are in good shape financially due to increased membership
and newsletter advertising. Paul moved to accept the Treasurer’s report, with the second by Jim. Motion carried unanimously.
3. First Vice President (Activities) Report: In Patsy Millard’s absence, Katherine presented the Board with the following updates:
a. Jaguar Day at the San Diego County Fair on June 28th was a success. We took 7 cars to the show. Rex Ryan won the People’s choice award for the show with
his red XK-120. He went back on July 4th and won the People’s choice again on the 4th.
b. Treasure Hunt Drive and Dinner on July 14th, 25 people in 12 cars made the run. The clues on the Treasure Hunt were how to get to Major’s Diner in Pine
Valley. Each participant was given a chance to get a Matchbox car from the Treasure Box for participating in the drive.
c. Patsy has six people so far with reservations to take the Personalized Tour and Lunch for the San Diego Museum of Art of the exhibition “Impressionist Giverny:
A Colony of Artists” followed by a no-host lunch at Waters Café on July 29th . Patsy reported that the Museum will provide a tour for the Club as long as there
are at least 15 paid members. Deadline for reservations is on July 24th. Katherine will send out a “last call” e-mail for this event.
d. The SDJC 43rd Annual Concours d’Elegance on August 5th at the Spanish Landing are still on.
e. The Concours Afterglow Lunch is on for September 8th at the Finnegan’s Rainbow Pub in Oceanside. Nedra may make a video like last year’s Afterglow, and
A/V equipment will be arranged for. Patsy will confirm with Bruce and Ann Mortland, hosts of this event, on the price per person at Finnegan’s. We plan to
caravan to the Mortland’s the morning of the lunch, then go over to the Pub for lunch.
f. October 6th is the IEJC Concours d’Elegance at Idyllwild again this year. Several people plan on driving up to Idyllwild for the IEJC show, then caravanning
down to British Car Day on Sunday morning from Idyllwild, as the Club Picnic is still set during the British Car Day on October 7th in Fallbrook. Registration
forms should be out soon.
g. Oct. 6th & 7th is the weekend of the Coronado Speed Fest. We will get parking passes and have a club corral for those who don’t go to Idyllwild or Fallbrook.
h. The November event is being hosted by Paul and Debbie Novak. Paul will be looking into a venue for the dinner. The voting in the election for the 2008 Board
member will be completed at that meeting.
i. Nedra sent a report to the meeting recommending that we follow through with our $500 deposit and have the 2007 Christmas Party on December 8th at the Kona
Kai Resort. She will have a presentation to make at the August meeting with menus, prices, etc. At the August meeting, the Board will decide on the venue for
the 2008 Christmas Party, so we can get a deposit down early.
j. Stick is going to gather information for having the January social event at the Admiral Baker Park restaurant.
B. Committee Reports
1. Membership: As there was not a quorum at the June meeting, so Nedra submit the following new members for board approval via e-mail. Jim motioned to accept
the new members, Katherine seconded, and the motion carried with eight Aye votes.
John Norton
1958 MK 8 Saloon, 1958 MK 1 Sedan
1996 XJS Convertible
Klaus and Manuela Reichardt
Proposed members at this meeting included: Jim Zalkins 1996 XJR, Robert Dalupan 2000 XK8 Convertible, and Stewart & Barbara Baily 2007 S-Type
Jim motioned to approve the applicants, Curtis seconded, and motion carried unanimously to approve.
2. Museum Report: Katherine reported on the following:
a. The Car Club Council of San Diego, is planning to have the annual car show again next year. The Greatest Show on Turf will be on the first Saturday in June,
June 7th.
b. The Car Club Council is still collecting car magazines and books for the overseas troops. August 6th marks the deadline and Mike Partain is coordinating the
collection.
3. Jaguar Tracks: August will be Roger Kuite’s last month for distributing the newsletter. Jim Roberts is going to take over the distribution job beginning in September.
The August issue will serve as the training month for Jim. Roger is going to update the instructions for this job before he leaves and give them to Jim. Both the JOC and IEJC
e-mailed their Concours registration forms for the newsletter.
4. Web Site: Dave put pictures from the 2005 and 2006 Concours on the Web site. He also put a link on the home page to the SDJC Concours Registration papers.
Katherine sent Dave a list of the club’s event activities to update on the Web site.
C. Old Business
1. Orson Donation: Katherine talked to Randy Prine regarding our donation. As a result of that conversation Katherine telephoned Arlene Wyrick at the Zoo to make the
arrangements for going down and presenting the Zoo personnel with a check. Arlene was on vacation, so when she returns Katherine will continue to pursue this donation.
2. 2008 Calendar Project: We are still seeking photographs of club members’ cars for our 2008 Calendar. There will be a set up area at the Concours event to take
photographs. While we do plan on doing some photographing at the Concours, we also don’t want every picture in the calendar to be at the same setting (i.e. Spanish Landing).
Katherine will send out an e-mail encouraging people to have a photograph of them with their car taken at an alternate venue.
3. Concours d’Elegance Progress Report: Hazel reported preparations for the SDJC 43rd Annual Concours d’Elegance on August 5th at the Spanish Landing are almost
complete. We got thrown a curve by the Port Commission – we have to haul out our trash at the end of the event. So Hazel has arranged with Abbey Rents to take 6 bags a ay
at $10 per bag for a total of $60. Vic has started receiving prize donations; he has 8 so far. Vic is working on getting a few more volunteers for the day of the event. Katherine
is going to telephone Francois and find out how many and what type of cars Jaguar Kearny Mesa is planning to bring to the show.
4. Judges Training on July 21st: The 2nd Concours Judges Training class is still scheduled for July 21st at Tom Krefetz’s facility in Oceanside. Dick said several people
have signed up to attend the training. He already has books prepared and is ready to go. Katherine will send out a “last call”/reminder e-mail for this.
5. British Car Club Council (BCCC) Membership: There was a meeting on July 16th to go over the BCCC incorporation progress and discuss British Car Day plans.
Katherine completed and submitted an application for formal BCCC membership for our club, with Chris Zacker as our official representative. The council also discussed plans
for the British Car Day on October 7th, which will be our club event for October. The SDJC will help with the trophies the day of the event.
6. By-law Change Proposal: Katherine will bring a by-law change proposal to the August meeting to the effect that the position of Newsletter Editor of the Jaguar Tracks
will be a Board position, if the change is approved by the club members at the election..
D. New Business
1. Dealer Displays: Vernon, at Jaguar Kearny Mesa, inquired about members displaying their cars in the showroom. We agreed it was a great idea to start up that activity
again. Stick volunteered to be the point person for this job. He is going to telephone Vernon and ask the requirements and restrictions, then start contacting club members an
arranging for display cars.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:17 PM.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at 6:30 PM in the Jaguar Kearny Mesa Board Room.
