Have a No-Gloom June!!!!
SDJC Drivers
Hi again, fellow Jaguar-lovers and fun-lovers.
If you have any questions or suggestions, contact the appropriate
club officer listed below, or, better yet, come to a Board Meeting or
Membership Meeting and stand up to be heard.
It was great to see a lot of new faces at the tea at the Westgate.
What fun to see both new and familiar faces topped with hats
and driving caps. Some styling chaps even wore knickers,
ascots, etc. In deference to guests and to the British tradition
of tea, we dispensed with the SDJC tradition of fining those who
drove non-Jaguars. But beware, Nedra’s “no-kitty kitty” will be
back at future meetings to growl at Subaru-steerers, Camryclingers, Honda-handlers, etc.
A special thanks to Carolyn Clark for setting up the Westgate,
an utterly beautiful venue. And what delicious goodies we had!
(No calories at all!!!!) Wow! Our board could get really spoiled
by having a meeting in an elegant meeting room like that! We’ll
be sending flowers and our sympathy to Carolyn as her daughter
was hospitalized with a serious illness. Kudos to First VP Hazel
Beck for great follow-through after Carolyn’s family crisis
prevented her from attending her own event.
Speaking of members stepping forward in a crisis, we should
also send get-well wishes to our long time web master Allan
Mandell, who is having eye surgeries and therefore needed to
step down. We are grateful to Susan Connell and David McIntosh,
who have taken over our site and are already capably making
changes and updates. So check our site often; our own events
and other events to which we are invited have been posted. If
you have an event or a photo or article to send in for the web
site, email it to [email protected].
Conversely, we have another member taking on a much-needed
role in spite of a family crisis. Rod Melendez, whose wife Winnie
is recovering from a rollover accident, is our new database
manager. If you move, trade in a car or a spouse or otherwise
have a change that should be reflected in club records, please
send it to Rod (as well as the other club appropriate officers).
Rod’s email address is [email protected].
Due to various members’ travel schedules and deadline
constraints, you’ll note that this issue of the Jag Tracks will not
have the May minutes - we will print them a month late or make
them available to you by website posting or email, and/or mail
you a hard copy on request. Let me know your preferences via
email to [email protected]. We will defer to the will of the
members.
Can you show off your Jaguar at Cush any month this year? If
so, please contact our display car coordinator, (another brave
volunteer!) Norm Bild at [email protected].
Though I’ve given only email addresses for the above-mentioned
volunteers they’ll probably be delighted to hear from you by
phone if you prefer!

days prior to the input deadlines.
The San Diego Auto Museum Advisory Council met in
special session in April and at the normal meeting time on
Wednesday, May 7, 2003. The major topics for both
meeting were the final details for the May 10th Car Show.
May 10th turned out to be a beautiful day in Balboa Park.
The Car Show wasfantastic. It was originally anticipated
that around 135 - 150 cars mightshow up. At 10:00am
over 220 cars had been registered and more were
stillarriving. The main show area, the grass behind the
Hall of Championsoverflowed to the side and front of the
building and across Presidents Way.When you entered
Balboa Park from Park Blvd and drove down Presidents
Way you were treated to a sight of cars on both sides of
the street. It sure attracted a lot of attention and encouraged
visitors to the park to stop by and see the show.
Symbolic Motors brought a new 2003 Lamborghini that
listed for $287,000 along with the Rolls Royce. Carlene
thought the Lambo looked nice, but passed on taking it
home as it was the wrong color. Lots of other special cars,
including one of the original Shelby Cobra’s with the same
original owner and a ton of documentation which showed
the racing history of this particular car. One car which
looked like it might take off (an airplane wing on the roof)
and another that drove on land or sea (had twin props under
the rear bumper).
A Volvo with over 375,000 miles on it and a replica Jaguar
SS100 with a Corvette engine. Some new BMW’s but no
old ones, and some special rods and low riders (including
one that rose up and down, when an unwary spectator
took a close look at it). For those who were looking for
food or another attraction, just across the parking lot was
a three day Pacific Island/Pan Asian festival, with lots of
booths, food and presentations. All in all, a great show. If
you were not there, you missed the start of a historic
automotive event.
Better start making plans for next May!

San Diego Ca,
What was there? Lots of cars of all different types. The
majority of cars were American, with a variety of Mustangs
(the Mustang Club served as the official judges) from stock
to Shelby GT 350 and 500’s. Rivaling the Mustangs were
Corvettes. All kinds and ages including one which had
been shown at Dearborn as representing one of the 50
years of the Corvette. In the older eras were Model T
Fords, old Packard’s, an old but very beautiful Studebaker.
One car in the group had the original paint from 1919.
They sure don’t make paint that way anymore.
On the English side, there was a group of Rolls Royce’s
from the very old to a brand new unsold 2003 model (with
a hood ornament that went up and down, when the car
moved). The Rolls club had made the Car Show the event
for the month, which is one reason that had such a large
turnout.
Perhaps we should do the same for the Jaguar Club, next
year. As it was there were two E-types on display, one
from Dick Cavicke, and another from the LA club. There
was an XJS and perhaps a couple more (but all in all a
very poor turnout). Lots of M.G.s and Healy’s, including
one which has set the world speed record of 142 miles an
hour for a four cylinder car a number of years ago.

33rd Ball Bearing
Breaker Rally
May 18, 2003
By Bob Hallett
Twenty-four British cars and their enthusiastic drivers and navigators took part in the 33rd annual BallBearing Breaker Rallye
on a beautiful Sunday morning at Tom Hamm’s Lighthouse.
few of the tie breaker questions and were penilized a few points
for coming in a bit early, so the first three places went to the MG
club (Hmmm, go figure) Anyway, Barbie said she’d have my head
on a platter if we won the bloody thing (just kidding, a little editorial licence).
The course tooks us through Point Loma and Ballast Point,
Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Mount Soladad and down to the
finish at a food court in Point Loma. The San Diego Jag Club
was represented by myself and my navigator Chris Johnson of
the San Diego Triumph Club.
We had a fun drive and a good time. We are looking forward to
the next BallBearing Breaker Rallye and encorage other members to come along. Of note, the San Diego Jaguar Club is the
only British car club that has not won this event.
Starting in the midfield as car #12 we quickly gained on a couple
MG’s (never exceeding the posted speed limits mind you). After
the 36 mile course we were first to check in. The other
competetors followed in very close behind.
Feeling that we had a pretty good run, Chris and I went to find a
libation to quench our parched lips. Unfortunately we missed a
