It seems the older I get, the worse I hate this time of year. One of the things that keeps me going strong are the people associated with GWRRA. Last weekend Mike Huffman did our CPR and First Aid training. What a great asset that we have in Mike. As in the past, Mike did an outstanding job training those of us willing to help, if the need arises. I don't know if a person can ever become numb to helping people survive a bad situation, but I do know this, if I ever found myself in a life threatening situation, looking up and seeing Mike would make me feel like I'm in good hands. Thanks Mike for taking the time! Well, as winter continues to do what it does - we will continue to do what we do. Next weekend (Feb 13) is Sweetheart Weekend in Nauvoo, Illinois, and we continue with our meet and eats every other week either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. If you haven't been to a meet and eat lately - you're missing out! By the time you read this letter, Sweetheart Weekend and probably another meet and eat will have passed. Don't get caught missing anything else! Check your schedule, check our calendar, and let's get together and talk about bikes or ice cream or family or something! Now let's ride, John & Yvette Moravec Chapter Directors F - Troop CPR/First Aid Training Sunday, Feb 7 Sue T getting treated for a stab wound Sue W and Sue T saving those babies with Infant CPR 2 Chapter Birthdays March 8—Yvette Moravic March 16—Mary Smith Chapter Anniversaries March 20—Al and Bev Rohwedder February Notes from your MECs Hi Everyone! It looks like we are getting close to riding season here in Iowa. With everything scheduled for the Chapter, Iowa District, Region E and Wing Ding it looks to be a busy time for 2016. First main event for the Chapter will be the Spring Wing Warm-Up held at McGrath Powersports on Saturday, May 7, followed up with the Region E Rally which will also be held at McGrath Powersports in the used bike center on Friday and Saturday, June 24th and 25th. Remember our Assistant Chapter Directors Pete and Cheryl Sayers will be in the running for the Region Couple of the Year so we will all want to be there to support them in their next adventure. The next main event will be Wing Ding on September 1st through 4th in Billings Montana, followed by the Iowa District Rally in Dubuque IA at the Hotel Julien on Sunday and Monday September 25th and 26th. So, as you can see, I have only toughed on the highlights for the summer with a lot of other events thrown in from our Chapter, Chapters around the state and many other Districts Rallies in Region E. Think warm thoughts, it can’t hurt-and may even help! As a relative newbe in the field of motorcycle maintenance, I find that the internet is a wonderful source of information. Not sure everything I find pertains to Goldwings, but here are the main things I have learned that we need to do before riding this spring. Change your oil and filter. I find that this information differs with who you talk to. Some people prefer to change it in the fall, some in the spring, and some do it both times. Whenever you do it, just make sure you do it. With the newer oils on the market, you need to refer to your maintenance schedule from Honda to determine how many miles you can go on a change. Check your tires. Is there enough tread? Is the air pressure correct? Look for bulges and foreign objects in the tread. Yes, tires are expensive but remember those two (or three) round rubber things are the only thing between you and the road. I have been a passenger when a back tire blew out at 70+ miles per hour. Fortunately the bike never wavered and we were able to stop safely in a safe spot, but I wouldn’t press my luck. Check your gear. Does your helmet still fit? Is the liner clean and in good shape? Is your visor clean, clear and scratch free? How old is it? Is this the year you need to replace your helmet? How about your coat? Clean, free of rips or tears, is the armor in good shape and in the correct places, it hasn’t shifted place? Don’t forget to check your Kevlar jeans, chaps, gloves and boots. Remember, if you go down, you need your gear to protect you. Is your ride clean? Do you need to finish installing that safety chrome Santa brought you? Don’t forget to update your first aid kit. Fill, replace and add needed items to keep your kit current, you never know when you will need it. Don’t forget the battery, gas, brakes, lights, controls, cables, T-CLOCS. We will focus on T-CLOCS next month as we prepare for our maintenance day. As you start planning your summer rides, make sure your ride is in tip top shape and ready to roll as soon as the snow melts and all that sand is cleaned from the streets and corners. If you get out early, be careful. Drivers will not be looking for us yet. 6 Ramblings from a Wandering Mind As I write this, we have 4 weeks and 6 days until the first day of spring! Anybody else suffering from a nasty case of PMS? I park my car everyday, right next to the trike and have to say hi, and we’ll get out for a ride soon. But, also as I write this, we had a few inches of snow today. I actually drove home from Chapter E’s Sweetheart Weekend in Nauvoo IL on some not too nice roads. It took me about 2 hours to get down there on Saturday morning and close to 3 hours to come home today. It was a great weekend; got to see lots of people I hadn’t seen in quite a while. It’s so nice to start the rally circuit and to see people other than your own chapter; not that I don’t like to see the people in the chapter, but I have made so many friends from all over it’s fun to get out and about again. Everyone should try to get to an event put on by another chapter, district or the region, you meet the best people on (or off) a Goldwing! Which brings up a very important issue. The Region E Rally will be held in our own fair city of Cedar Rapids on June 24th and 25th. McGrath’s is sponsoring the rally and it will be held at their place. I talked to Brody the other day and I think he’s pretty excited. Let’s rally (pun intended) together and show the rest of the region what we have to offer in Iowa. I know Region Director Bob Fowkes will be asking us for help, let’s give him all the help he needs. I will not be able to attend on Friday as I won’t be able to get off work, but will be there Friday nite and Saturday doing whatever they need me to do. Please think about volunteering wherever you’re needed. Check the coming events for the chapter events, things around the district and events in other districts, as well as information on the Reno Rendezvous and Wing Ding. Get out and see what’s going on. It’s never too early to make your hotel reservations and get those registrations done. And speaking of meeting new people and seeing old friends, who wants to go with Chapter O to Kalona next month? I will be looking for a head count so we can get our reservations made, deadline is March 12. The cost is $20 per person but I believe Yvette said the chapter would pay half again this year. Join me for a fun day and a great meal. Until next time, shovel safe, and dream of winding roads! Sue T Don’t forget to patronize and thank our major sponsors! 7 Important Notice from Chapter O You & your Chapter participants are invited!! Payment of $20.00 must be made up front. We need to pay for all reservations. Hi everyone, I have info on our Kalona Day for shopping & eating on March 19, 2016.
