November 19th Jim Burlingham It’s about coming home… Rolling out the red carpet for you! Garnett Gazette November 2015 Cedar Rapids, IA A Note From Our Manager 202 35th St. Dr. SE N ovember means many things to lots of different people. For me, it’s about being thankful. I am grateful for my family and their never-ending love and support. I am thankful for all of the Residents, Families and Staff at Garnett Place for embracing me with open arms and allowing me to become a member of your family. On November 11th each year, we celebrate Veterans Day to thank and honor the men and women who help maintain the freedoms in our country by serving in our military. Thanksgiving is that time of year that helps remind us to take a few minutes out of our busy schedules to reflect on all the things we have to be thankful for. Have a fantastic month! Enjoy family and friends, eat lots of turkey and don’t forget to turn your clock back one hour on November 1st or you will be really late to wherever you are going! Be kind ~ Be thoughtful ~ but most of all be thankful! Kim Emrich, Manager A Note From Our Assistant Manager H appy November! I love November. It could be because it is my birthday month (I’ll be turning 28 again this year) and it is also Thanksgiving time which means I get to spend time with my extended family. I wanted to thank all of you here at Garnett Place for being part of that family and I am so thankful that I have gotten to meet each and every one of you. I truly enjoy getting to hear your stories and learn about what your family traditions are. As this holiday season starts to get going I’ll need your support to get through another Iowa winter (yuck to snow!) and hope to stay nice and cozy warm. Please take a moment this month and let me know the things that you are thankful for and I will do the same. Tara Malcolm, Assistant Manager 319.362.3630 www.garnettplace.net Introducing Kari, Life Enrichment Coordinator! G reetings everyone. My name is Kari and I am your new Life Enrichment Coordinator. I look forward to getting to know everyone and to brighten up your day with a variety of activities! Personally, two of my favorite activities are bird watching and reading. I just completed my Master’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation at the University of Iowa. What is Therapeutic Recreation? Consider this your icebreaker–come say hello and ask me what it is! Before coming to Garnett Place I was interning at The Meth-Wick Community here in Cedar Rapids. Prior to that I was a teaching assistant at The University of Iowa. I moved to Iowa from Minnesota four years ago with my husband Spenser. Spenser is a PhD student at the University of Iowa and is studying Medieval Literature and Translation. We just celebrated our third wedding anniversary! We have a cat, who we adore, named Shelly. Please let me know if you have any activities you would like to do, I am open for suggestions and would love to implement activities that are interesting to you. I can’t wait to get started! Kari Santos, Life Enrichment Coordinator Dare to Dream and the Trip of a Lifetime! It all began when Garnett Place Culinary staff member Sue Zier saw information about the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight is a non-profit organization dedicated to sending local Veterans to Washington D. C. to visit various historical sites and war memorials. Sue instantly thought of our Garnett Place resident Bee Coy. Bee was a member of the Women’s Air Corp, a women’s group that was instrumental in WWII. With the help of Bee’s granddaughter, Sadja Pals, Bee was able to take the trip of a lifetime! During the dawning hours of Tuesday, October 20th, Bee (one of two female veterans on this flight) and her granddaughter along with many other veterans and volunteers boarded the plane at the Eastern Iowa Airport. They flew nonstop to Washington D.C. After an exhausting day of touring the memorials and other sites, Bee returned home around 11:30 p.m. She was overwhelmed by the number of people waiting to welcome them home–including some Garnett Place staff and residents! Bee did sleep in a bit the next morning but was very thankful for having the opportunity to go on the flight. “They even had a memorial for the women!” A Note From Maintenance! T his month we would like to find and fix toilet water tanks, faucets, shower valves etc. from wasting water. If you are having problems with any of these please let our staff know and they will notify Maintenance to get it repaired. Our goal is to save water and reduce expenses. This includes all staff, too! Together we can conserve water by using our water more wisely. Have a great month and as always if you see something that needs our attention, please make sure to write it down and get it to a staff member. We will address it as soon as we are able. Scott Franklin, Maintenance Coordinator Culinary Corner! I am glad everyone is enjoying the hot apple cider! The drink of the month for November will be orange spiced tea. As a reminder, if you borrow something from one of the dining rooms, please be sure to bring it back by the next meal service. We have some new faces in the dining rooms. Be sure to say “hi” to Cathy and Marci and thank you for being patient as they learn everyone’s name. Have a great month and remember-a smile it goes a long way! Angie Duckworth, Culinary Coordinator A Note from Marketing! G arnett Place is celebrating the start of the holiday season by decorating a tree for the Festival of Trees on November 7th & 8th. The Festival of Trees will feature 40 trees decorated by local businesses and organizations. Garnett Place’s tree will include ornaments decorated by our residents. There will also be a Holiday Market, snacks and crafts for the kids, plus Santa will be there! After the event, the Cedar Rapids Jaycees will hold a silent auction for 20 of the trees and the proceeds will be distributed to local organizations. Festival of Trees is free to the public and a great way to kick off the holiday season!! Beth Tygart, Community Relations Coordinator A Note from our Nurse! G arnett Place has implemented a sign-in/sign-out log at the 202 and 208 entrances. The logs are meant for your convenience and safety as well as to help us better serve you and worry less when we are wondering where you are. Thank you for your cooperation! The second update is that the foot doctor will be here on Tuesday, November 10th. If you need or want to see him, please let us know before then. Have a great November and think TURKEY! Lee Thoma, Health Care Coordinator
