Two-thirds of body consists of water, and water is the main component of the human body. Did you know that your tissues and organs are mainly made up of water? Every cell in your body needs water. If you become dehydrated, brain and body functions can be greatly affected and workouts can become quite difficult to complete. Percentages: •Muscle consists of 75% water •The brain consists of 90% water •Bone consists of 22% water •Blood consists of 83% water The functions of water in the human body: •Water transports nutrients and oxygen into cells •Water moisturizes the air in the lungs •Water helps with metabolism •Water protects our vital organs •Water helps our organs to absorb nutrients •Water regulates body temperature •Water detoxifies •Water protects and moisturizes our joints Harmful Effects of Dehydration: •Tiredness •Migraine •Constipation •Muscle Cramps •Irregular Blood Pressure •Kidney Problems •Dry Skin Symptoms of Dehydration: •Dark Urine: Urine is generally pale yellow to clear when you have sufficient water intake. Dark color or strong smell indicates that you need to drink more water, •Dry Skin: Skin is the largest body organ and requires its share of water. •Thirst: Thirst is the most obvious sign that you are already dehydrated. It is always good to practice to drink more water when you are NOT thirsty, don’t wait until you’re thirsty. •Hunger: Most people mistake hunger for the indication to eat more, whereas in actual fact, they may be dehydrated. So before you have your meal, grab a glass of water. •Fatigue: Water is a source of energy and gives you a boost of energy. I was overweight and a very critical diabetic (8 insulin shots a day). After having a hard time conceiving, in 2009 I was blessed with a handsome son named Kenlee. In 2011, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. There I was, with a 2 year old child and to hear I have cancer, I was completely devastated. My thyroid was removed and my body did not accept the removal very well. Within 24 hours, I was in a paraplegic state because of low calcium. The doctor told me that I would have trouble walking and trouble with my bones due to the calcium issue. Being 312 pounds, anything I did was a task. I blamed myself for being tired on all of my medical issues and never about me being overweight. Fast forward to December 2012, I knew I needed to make a change. I was connected with my trainer. A few days later and told her about myself but would NOT tell her my weight!! My trainer advised me on how to get started and she and a friend of mine talked me into doing the Rivertown Reindeer Race (5K). I wondered how in the world I was going to do this at 312 pounds and with my calcium issue. I signed up even though I was the very last person to finish the race, I FINISHED!!!! It took me 1 hour and 24 minutes… BUT, I FINISHED!!!!!! Elizabeth Huggins BEFORE/AFTER In 2013 my cancer came back. I became really depressed and wanted to give up, but I couldn’t let myself do that. My son needed me! I started my radiation again and all was well. I told myself I was not going to let my medical issues get me down. I had a reason to live, I wanted to play with my son. Since beginning my journey, my son has started running 5K’s with me and he encourages me every day to keep going. I encourage everyone to start! It may only be for 5 minutes but you have to start somewhere! 3 years later, I am down 135 pounds and no longer on insulin to control my diabetes. I have completed three half marathons and just competed my first Sprint Triathlon. Being overweight has always hindered me from doing things that I have always wanted to do. Skydiving has always been a dream, but knew it was something that I could not do because of my weight. I am so ready for this dream to become reality!
