Newsletter for Parents <<May 2012 - July 2012>>
Acting Principal’s Corner
Dear Parents,
We have finally come to the end of 2011-2012 school year. It has been a very
challenging year for the school, staff and students, but also a very successful one.
Our students performed tremendously well in various areas. Academically, the
Form 7 students achieved the best ever results in the last ever cohort of Hong Kong
Advanced Level Examination. The passing rates for most of the subjects were
higher than the Hong Kong norm, especially in Use of English and Chinese
Language and Culture, with over 95% of students passing. We are now looking
forward to receiving the results of the HKDSE, IGCSE and the UK GCE A Levels.
This year students also made history in sports by winning four championships in
International School Sports Competitions as first-time participants, they achieved
the Overall Champion (Boys Group) for all sports in the Hong Kong Inter-school
Sports Competitions in the Tsuen Wan & Islands District, and the Cheerleading
Team was invited by the Cheerleading Federation Hong Kong, China to represent
Hong Kong by participating in the Asia International Open Championships in Japan.
I am very glad to see how much students have grown this year. In performing arts,
we were also the Champion of the Inter-school Music Contest. Moreover, the
School Choir was also highly sought after and has performed in a number of
different community events. They will travel to Beijing in mid-July to participate in an International Choir Competition.
I am very proud of their performance and appreciate the time and effort they have devoted to improving their standard.
The Music Department and the Theatre Arts Club jointly organized a Music Concert to raise funds for orphans in Qinghai,
China. In visual arts, with the support and guidance from the Arts Department, our students have produced high quality
art work, which can be viewed on the school website. Next academic year the Arts Department is even planning to take
students on an overseas Arts Tour.
In terms of facilities, the construction of the Music Block and Promenade is progressing smoothly and is expected to be
completed in December/January. I believe that these new facilities will help teachers further nurture the talents of our
students.
This year the school has received extensive media coverage including newspaper articles (e.g. SCMP, the Standard,
Mingpao), magazines articles (e.g. Good Schools Guide, Around DB) and even segments on television (e.g. TVB Jade).
The YHKCC has attracted a lot of positive attention from different parts of the community. This could be further
supported by our good enrollment figures: Form 1 places for next academic year were already filled up in late February of
2012. I regret that we are unable to offer more Form 1 places to applicants as the government has lowered the
maximum limit due to the low birth rate in Hong Kong. Apart from Form 1, the enrolments of other years have also
reached their maximum limits, and we have no choice but to put suitable applicants on the waiting list.

Acting Principal’s Corner
International Primary School
You may know that the YMCA of Hong Kong is currently operating a Secondary School (YHKCC),
a College of Continuing Education and a couple of Kindergartens in Hong Kong. The Association
is also very keen to run a Primary School as well and has been working conscientiously to
achieve this goal. However, due to the low birth rate, the government has put a hold on all
applications over the past few years. This summer, the government released four school sites
with campuses and invited applications to operate an international school. We are now working
closely with the Association to bid for one of the sites to operate an International Primary School (which may include a
kindergarten). To make this application a success, we need support from parents, community, Consulate Generals and
Chamber of Commerce representatives. If you (or your relatives and friends) are able and willing to support us or if you
know any Consulate General and/or Chamber of Commerce representatives who would be willing to support our
application, please do not hesitate to contact me on 2988 2002 or by E-mail at [email protected].
Principal Recruitment
The new Principal, Mr. Adrian Price, will arrive in Hong Kong in late July and assume his duties on 1st August. Please join
me in welcoming Mr. Price and give him your full support. I believe that the YHKCC will continue to thrive under his
leadership. I am honoured to have had the opportunity to lead the school,
staff and students over the past nine months and am very pleased to see
that the school is growing stronger and stronger. I would like to express my
gratitude to our professional staff for their selfless contribution to the
school and student development, and to parents for your continual support.
I wish you all have a peaceful and refreshing summer vacation.
Mr. Dion Chen
Acting Principal

Admissions
Admissions
The school has been very successful indeed this year in attracting new students. As you are probably aware, the
demographics of the Tung Chung area have changed considerably over the past few years. The demand for places in the
school has increased dramatically and now far exceeds the actual number of places available.
This year the school received over 400 applications for Form 1 for the 2012 – 2013 academic year, but the Education
Bureau has stipulated that the YHKCC can only admit 160 students. All the places were filled during the final round of
Form 1 Admissions on 25th February. Of these 160 students, about 70% are non-local. In Form 1 next year there will be 6
classes with about 27 students in each class. About 30 new students have been admitted into higher forms and over 80%
of them are non-local students. Forms 2 and 3 are also full for the 2012 – 2013 academic year. New student
registrations were held on 12th July and 13th July. Newly admitted students in Forms 1 – 4 and GCE A1 registered during
a designated timeslot.
In September 2011, the school started changing to new summer and winter uniforms. As mentioned in a number of
previous letters to parents, a one year grace period was given to current students who may have bought their uniforms last
September or more recently. However, from 3rd September 2012 onwards, all students are required to wear the new
school uniform. Please purchase the summer uniform without delay!
The new uniforms can be purchased from the Victoria Uniform Company in Sheung Wan or Tsuen Wan.

Academic Matters
Local Curriculum
After another year of hard work, students and teachers are
probably more than pleased that the summer holiday has
eventually come!
Students completed their final examinations in late June and the
report cards were distributed on 11th July. The majority of students
had a good year in terms of their learning and will carry what they
have learned to new heights when they come back to school in
September. Of course there are some students who have fallen
short of their teachers’ or parents’ expectations, and perhaps even
of their own expectations. I encourage parents to discuss this
matter with their children and work with them to draw up a study
plan for the new school year. Please encourage your children to
assume even greater responsibility for their own learning.
The Form 7 Advanced Level examination results have just been published. This year, as in the past, Use of English and
Chinese achieved very good results with passing rates close to 100%. Business Studies and Chemistry are particularly
strong this year, with passing rates as high as 90%, which is the highest in the history of the A Level results in these
subjects in the school. Results in most other subjects have also improved from last year. Form 7 students are now eagerly
awaiting their JUPAS results which come out in late July. We wish them all the best in their future studies.
Even though this is the last year of the Advanced Level examinations in Hong Kong, teachers are analyzing the results and
seeking to devise appropriate strategies to ensure that teaching effectiveness is further improved in the school and, in
particular, for the HKDSE and GCE examination classes.
We are eagerly awaiting the first set of HKDSE results, which will be released on 20th July. Many students, and indeed
teachers, are keen to learn what they will be. We pray that students will be pleased with their results and will continue to
set high expectations for themselves whatever they choose to do in the future.
Mr. Alfred Chan
Assistant Principal (Local Curriculum)

International Curriculum
International Curriculum
After an intensive two month period of international examinations, the last GCE examination was held on 25th June.
Students and teachers are now anxiously waiting for the results, especially since the first cohort of IGCSE and GCE
students have now completed their studies. The results of the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) will be
released on 14th August. IGCSE and GCE results for Edexcel syllabuses will be released on 16th August. Students have
been given a username and password so that they can access their results online.
A few changes have been made to the international curriculum with more Edexcel syllabuses being selected by Heads of
Department and subject teachers. Form 3 students taking Business, Accounting & Financial Studies (BAFS) will be
prepared for Edexcel IGCSE Business Studies examination in May/June 2014. GCE A1 students starting their courses in
September 2012 will follow Edexcel syllabuses in GCE Art & Design, GCE Mathematics and GCE Physical Education, which
is a brand new course. Students taking GCE Chinese and GCE English Language & Literature will continue to follow the
Edexcel syllabus.
It is always sad to say goodbye and GCE A2 students will certainly be missed. We wish them every success and happiness
in the next stage of their lives. At their Graduation Dinner in The Mira Hotel on 20th June, 2012, GCE A2 students were
encouraged to step out and move forward with the following speech:
In 2010, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, was invited to speak at Princeton University’s Graduation Ceremony. His
speech was based on advice given to him by his grandfather. He reminded the graduates that cleverness and kindness
are not mutually exclusive. Cleverness is a gift, but kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy – they’re gifts after all – but choices
can be hard.
In the past many of your ‘choices’ have been made for you – by your parents, by your teachers, by the school. We have
tried our best to make choices that we believe are in your best interests. And sometimes we’ve had to be tough on you. I
hope you understand that we were trying to guide you, to help you develop the skills that you need to succeed in the world.
But from now on, in a very real sense, your life – the life you author on your own – begins. You are now writing the story
yourself and making your own choices. J. K. Rowling said, “The moment you are old enough to take the wheel,
responsibility lies with you.”
How will you use your gifts? What choices will you make? Will inertia be your guide, or will you follow your passions? Will
you bluff it out when you are wrong, or will you apologize? Will you be clever at the expense of others, or will you be kind?
Mr. Andrew Higgins
Assistant Principal (International Curriculum)

The Heads of Year and Student Support Team continue to work with great commitment to provide a very high level of
pastoral care for our students. One of their greatest challenges is helping these young adults develop a sense of
‘ownership’ of their studies and of the personal choices they make. This is by no means an easy task and, like parents,
they seek to inform and educate students about a number of issues including the responsible use of time; proper sleep
patterns; safety online; developing healthy relationships and taking responsibility for their possessions and the
consequences of their actions. Because students thrive best in an environment where home and school work together to
support their academic, personal and social development, we really appreciate the collaboration of parents and are
grateful for the emails and phone calls of support and thanks we receive.

Student Council
A message from Travis Phay (President) on behalf of the Executive Student Council:
It fills us with a great sense of honour and pride to have
served the YHKCC student body this year. It has been a
hectic time and we made a great start to the school year with
participation from the newly formed Student Voice
committee which helped serve as a platform for students to
freely share views.
Through the meetings we were able to gather many creative
and innovative ideas: some of the ideas we came up with are
already being implemented such as an electronic booklist for
students to access online (e.g. GREENR.com); more examrelated assessment books; class-rep competition and also
the concession of allowing students who have PE lessons
after lunch to leave school in their PE kit. In addition, we also
organised casual dress days (e.g Japanese Earthquake
Relief); participated in Open Day events; created a student feedback website (studentsidea.com), as well as working
with some members of Student Voice to help organise a Student Ball for upper forms.
The Student Council has improved each year but we want to improve even more, particularly in becoming more
systematic in planning and running meetings, as well as in ensuring more effective communication with the Student
Council committee members, the Form and Class Reps.
On behalf of the Student Council, I should like to express my sincere gratitude to the exceptionally helpful Student
Council teachers, Mrs. Sarchet-Waller and Mr. Harley who “shed light on our path, but allowed us to choose the path
we took”; to the incredible Student Council members as well as to Student Voice members, without whom we could
not have succeeded.

PATHS Programme
Ms. Yuk Kwok has worked hard to provide a wide variety of learning experiences for the students at YHKCC.
►
Mentorship Programme
It has been a very busy semester for those involved in this scheme with a wide variety of activities on offer
including, baking cheesecake for Mother’s Day; organising a dodge-ball competition; mentors from GCE A1 and
Form 4 providing revision sessions for students in Forms 1 and 2 and ending with a Mentorship Scheme party. For
the party mentors helped bake cupcakes and brownies and prepared a video to showcase the wide range of
activities in which they have been involved over the course of this academic year. Through this programme
mentees have had a lot fun and made new friends while the mentors have developed valuable leadership skills.
►
Home Ambassadors Scheme
With regard to the Harmony Ambassador Scheme, we paid a
visit to a centre for the elderly at end of April. We prepared
different games for them in which they participated with great
enthusiasm.
The Harmony Ambassadors also went to Tai O, to visit the
elderly who live alone. Twenty nine students participated in the
programme and prepared different performances including
singing songs, playing the guitar and reed pipes as well as
performing a dance for the elderly who live in the village and in
‘stilt’ houses. All the students enjoyed talking to them and
learned a lot about their way of life.

SGDS
Drama for Fun workshop: we provided six sessions of drama
training for a small group of students, culminating in a mini
performance at the end of June to which parents were invited. All
participants and parents recognised that the programme
enhances self-confidence and would like to continue to be
involved next year.
Finally, as a means of rewarding those who had been heavily
involved as Harmony Ambassadors over the course of the year,
we organised an Adventure Ship Training Day, aimed at
enhancing self-confidence and developing team spirit. The
students needed to break through their barriers of fear by
jumping several times from the ship into the sea. Everyone had a
great time!

Words from the teacher-in-charge, Mr. Isaac Chiu:
"We are very delighted and grateful to have full support
from teachers, parents and students throughout the
campaign. We would also like to take this opportunity
to thank the football coaches, Mr. Stevic Rankovic and
Mr. Trevor Lam, for their excellent coaching which laid
the foundation for our success. Our Football Team
will continue to work harder and continue to strive for

Student Teacher Conference Day
(2nd May)
To encourage students to take greater responsibility for their own learning and enhance their engagement in the
process, the school organized a second Student Teacher Conference on 2nd May. It was successfully carried out.
After meeting with their Class Teachers, students went to the Student Learning Centre to write up an evaluation of
the discussion and set themselves some specific targets for improvement in each of their subjects. Students were
asked to try and achieve these targets by the time they took their final examinations in June.

Science Week
(25th May)
Science is related to our daily lives. By studying
Science, students can understand cause and effect
relationships through experimental activities. Most
importantly, Science can develop students' critical
thinking and analytical skills.
In order to
arouse students’ interest, Science teachers organized
an exciting Science Week during 14th May and 18th
May. During the week, different student-oriented
experimental activities were launched, including
Experiment Sessions, Science Knowledge Competition,
DNA Extraction and Movie Admiration.
All in all, Science Week turned out to be a great
success. Not only did the students engage in different
activities, they also demonstrated spontaneity to learn
the mechanisms and reactions behind what they observed. In the future, similar Science activities with more vivid
content will be introduced to further arouse students’ curiosity, and help them to build up their logical and critical
thinking skills in different areas.
Here are some highlights of the different activities during Science Week.
►
Egg-dropping Competition
Science Week kicked off with an egg-dropping
competition on the first day. Students were able to
apply what they had learned about gravity and air
resistance in their Integrated Science lessons and
put their knowledge into practice. 10 groups of
students brought along beautiful designs to the
competition and were eager to win the prize for
most precise landing and best design. The
competition was in two rounds. Unfortunately 4
teams cracked their eggs! In the end, Form 2H
(LIMBU Nisham, NG Tsz Lam, TANG Hau Kiu,
HOTCHANDANI Sneha) won the prize for the most
precise landing, and Form 2Y (YOO Seung Hun, YU
Stephen Jr Prejola, RESHMI Bhumika, PUN Chiela
Mae, VERGARA Jr. Manuel C.) won the prize for the best design. The students showed incredible creativity in
designing both the parachute and the landing apparatus. It was also interesting to see the strategies
students adopted in order to streamline their designs and fight against the wind.

Science Knowledge Competitions (Form 1 & Form 2)
On 14th May and 15th May, Science General Knowledge Competitions were held for Form 1 and Form 2
students. Three student representatives from each class were nominated to participate in these competitions.
The competitions were even more exciting than expected, especially in the second part where the class
representatives ran out to press the button in order to get a turn to answer the questions. All the classes
performed really well and did a great job! The final results of the competitions are as follows:

Experiment Sessions
For Chemistry, three stimulating and attractive experiments were conducted in
the playground and in the Chemistry laboratory. Students were able to observe
a physical process called Sublimation and understand the acidic nature of
Carbon Dioxide by putting few blocks of dry ice into beakers of water with
indicator. Lots of students were attracted and enjoyed ‘touching’ and ‘feeling’
the effervescence.
Another interesting experiment called ‘Elephant’s Toothpaste Experiment’ was
also performed. By mixing certain chemicals and paint together, woo…, a long
colourful elephant’s toothpaste started to splash out!
It was an unforgettable experience to share among our students!
►
Water Rocket Competition
For the next part of Science Week, a water rocket competition was
‘launched’. All Form 2 classes participated in the event. Students
enthusiastically designed water rockets which incorporated outlook view and
aerodynamics calculations. The materials used including plastic bottles,
paper cones, paper straps. Concepts about recycling materials and
collaboration skills were learned from students throughout the competition.
“Hurray! Wow! Yay, on track!” were expressed by Form 2 students and
cheering from fellow schoolmates. The water rocket competition was a
thoroughly fruitful and fun event. Form 2A won prize for the furthest distance
travelled by a rocket.
►
DNA Necklace Workshop
Two DNA Necklace workshops were held after school
during Science Week. The aim of the workshops was to
arouse students’ interest in studying Biology by providing
fun and interesting training on biotechnology. The
workshops were oversubscribed, with more than 60 junior
form students signing up. Students learned how to extract
their own DNA from their mouth cavities using a safe and
non-invasive method.
Students enjoyed both learning the theory and the
biotechnology practical skills in the workshops. By the
end, every student was able to create their very special
unique DNA necklace using their artistic talents together
with lab skills.
It was an unforgettable experience to share among our students!

Annual Graduation Ceremony
(16th June)
The school’s Annual Graduation Ceremony for Forms 6, 7 and
GCE A2 students was held on 16th June. The Right Rev.
Andrew Au-ming Chan, Bishop of the Diocese of Western
Kowloon, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui and the Honourable Mrs.
Regina Ip, GBS JP, Legislative Council Member, HKSAR, were
the Guests-of-Honour. Mr. Doug Oxley, Dr. Alice Yuk, JP, the
Chairman and Supervisor of the School Management
Committee respectively; Mr. Evans Mendonca, Chairperson of
the Parent-Teacher Association; Mr. Dion Chen, Acting
Principal, and SMC members Mrs. Sheila Chuang, Mr. Ben
Lam, Mr. Alex Kwan and Dr. Brian Brumsickle were in the
platform party.
Mr. Doug Oxley welcomed all parents, guests and friends to the Ceremony. He impressed upon the graduates the
importance of soft skills and urged them to learn and acquire the skills needed for their careers later in life.
The Acting Principal, Mr. Dion Chen, then shared a story about a former YHKCC student who started her school life
in Form 1. As she grew up, she learned lessons about respect, setting targets and doing her best. Mr. Chen
explained to the graduates the essence of respect, which, to put it simply, is to respect oneself and one another. If
a person respects himself, he will accept and even enjoy who he is, despite his personal weaknesses, big or small.
He will not harm himself, that is, he will not indulge in bad habits, will not be dishonest, and will not get in evil’s way.
If he respects himself, he will take good care of himself; he will try to improve himself, in his health, in his outlook
and in his relations with others, and he will have integrity. And when a person respects another person, he will treat
that person in these ways as well. He further stressed the importance of setting oneself targets, and the need to
have the will and determination to do one’s best so that these targets can be achieved. The girl mentioned in the
story wonderfully illustrated the importance of one’s will and determination in the process.
The Hon. Mrs. Regina Ip, GBS, JP, spoke next before presenting certificates and awards to graduates. In her
speech, she praised the diverse culture, background, languages and curriculum of the school. Mrs. Ip spoke of the
school’s CARES principles, and highlighted the areas of Creativity and Critical Thinking. She explained the
misconceptions that many people have on the subject. Instead of looking at Critical Thinking as trying to be
“critical” or “attacking” someone’s point of view and ways of doing things, Critical Thinking should be an approach
to thinking clearly and rationally, and presenting thoughts and actions in a similarly clear and rational manner. As
for Creativity, it means a belief and way of thinking, of always trying to create new things and new possibilities.
These skills are vital for the ever changing world that we, and especially the graduates, are faced with.
This jubilant event was also celebrated with music performances, including a string performance, praise band
performance, choir, orchestra ensemble, a piano solo and a team of students playing African drums during the
recession.
Besides graduates and teachers, the Ceremony was very well attended by more than 400 parents and friends.

“Freeing the Mind” - A creative workshop for gifted and talented Visual Arts students
(22nd June)
It was a pleasure to welcome the Artist and Designer
Marsha Roddy to the Visual Arts Department at the
YHKCC to talk about her work and the creative processes
involved, firstly as a costume designer for theatre and
television and then as a textile artist.
Twenty students were selected to take part in the
workshop, both for their ability as Art students and for the
consistent effort they had invested in their work
throughout the year.
The students were
given a wide range of
Emotive images to
look at and were
asked to respond by
making marks that corresponded to how they felt about the particular images
they had contemplated.
After discussing the results and their effectiveness, the students were asked
to attach ‘body armour’ which had pieces of chalk projecting out from it onto
their legs and elbows or head.
Taking the pen or pencil out of
their hand and instead asking
them to articulate a feeling or
emotion by moving an elbow,
knee or head to describe a
feeling, took the students out of their comfort zone and stopped
them reverting to entrenched habit patterns.
The results were sensitive and highly expressive.
This was a worthwhile and constructive workshop. It was fascinating
to get some insight into how a successful artist or designer develops
ideas and produces work and also cathartic to get the chance to
express feelings in a very different way.

Music Concert 2012 - A Night to Remember
(11th July)
The YHKCC hosted its long awaited Music Concert on Wednesday evening
with the theme of “Raising Awareness of Poverty”. The school hall was
packed to capacity as YHKCC students prepared to go onto the stage and
entertain the audience.
The concert was held in response to the humanitarian services, “Friends of
Qinghai Children Programme”, organized by the Christian Action. Since 1998,
Christian Action have been co-managing three children’s homes, in which they
care for abandoned and disabled children. More than 800 orphans have
benefited from foster care services, medical and surgical treatment,
education grants and pre-vocational training. The proceeds of the concert
went to the Christian Action and, on the evening itself the Music Concert
raised an amount over HK$16,000.
Wednesday night was indeed a night for YHKCC musicians, dancers and
actors to showcase their talents. And, talent was what the audience got. A
wealth of music and dance kicked off the first half of the show with songs
including “Food, Glorious Food” and dance acts by Theatre Arts students.
Character and flair were displayed in the bands which sang and played a variety of musical instruments including
the flute, harpsichord, acoustic guitar, saxophone and piano, to name a few.
From classical music to jazz, from dance to pop music and more - this special charity show truly had something for
everyone. The audience were impressed by the voices, emotion and timeless songs such as Money (That’s what I
want), Who will buy, Imagine, What a wonderful World, Wavin’ Flag and many more...This heart-warming concert
was an unforgettable evening for everyone who attended.
Ms. Arming Leung, Senior Development Officer (Corporate Development Department) of Christian Action, said the
concert had been a credit to the entire school community of the YHKCC and a tribute to orphans in Qinghai
province. “With this concert, we hope to raise awareness of poverty and money to benefit orphans in Qinghai and
those who love them while joining together for a night of powerful music and dance for the soul.”
Mr. Dion Chen, Acting Principal of the YHKCC, expressed his gratitude and thanks to everyone, “We would like to
thank everyone from the YHKCC and everyone involved in this concert for their wonderful contribution, as well as
the excellent and talented musicians who performed so well. We are also incredibly grateful to the outpouring of
support and love that our students have delivered tonight. We wish to express, through love and care, that in spirit,
we are with the children in Qinghai. Being a responsible global citizen is one of our core values at the YHKCC and
we have always taken action to help those people in need around the world. Today, YHKCC students are putting
into action our value of Responsible Global Citizenship by making a difference for many orphans in Qinghai.”
