History Google`s Niantic Labs Field Trip App
Go-Trippin to the Best Places to Eat, Play, Shop, Explore and More!
Part of the fun of traveling is discovering hidden gems along the way. Those
“little known but awesome” places that make a destination unique.
If you really want to experience the true flavor of any city, then you need an
expert. Someone who can let you in on the “best-kept secrets” of their area! And
who better to ask than a Local Innkeeper?
Our Go Trippin’ contributors share their personal knowledge of cool, out-of-the-ordinary things to do in a variety of cities
throughout the US and Canada that will help you create an itinerary for a trip unlike any other.
Who knows? You might even discover something new in your own backyard!
History
In March of 2013, Lisa Kolb attended the Local U Advanced Session in Baltimore, MD. Bill
Slawski was the Keynote Speaker regarding Google’s Local Patents.
To make a long story short, she introduced herself to Bill after his session, and he asked what
industry she was in. When she shared that Acorn IS supports Bed and Breakfasts, Small Inns
and Boutique Hotels with their internet marketing, he suggested she take a look at Google’s
Niantic Labs new Field Trip App. He indicated that it would be a really great idea for
Innkeepers to be included in this App for people traveling or exploring in their respective
cities.
Acorn IS didn’t know a lot about the Field Trip App at that time, so they began to dig, and
discovered that the App only accepted approved feeds for data into their system. IE:
Field Trip doesn’t accept individual listings. So, creating a Website that could provide
great information about Inns and their areas was conceived, and Go-Trippin was born!
On May 21st, 2013 Acorn IS submitted a Content Inclusion Request to Field Trip to see if
they would be interested in taking Innkeeper’s Content from Go-Trippin into their system.
A month later, on June 25th, 2013, the first Go-Trippin Feed was seen in the Field Trip
App!

Go-Trippin Technical Specifications
Go-Trippin has been designed to support your Inn’s online presence, as it is built strictly to follow Google’s Guidelines. It
focuses on Google’s new direction regarding Authority. Go-Trippin creates an opportunity for the Innkeeper to strengthen
their own Online Authority for their Website placement by publishing listings and articles on an industry related Website.
“Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content
without such verification…the true cost of remaining anonymous, then, might be irrelevance.”
- Eric Schmidt, Google’s Executive Chairman
“We are doing a better job of detecting when someone is sort of an authority in a specific space. It could be medical, it could
be travel, whatever. And trying to makes sure that those rank a little more highly, if you are some sort of authority or a site
that according to the algorithms we think might be a little bit more appropriate for users.”
- Matt Cutts, Google Spokesperson

Field Trip Promotions
As your listing or articles in Go-Trippin become part of Google’s Niantic Labs Field Trip App, promotions provided by Field
Trip may provide you marketing opportunities into the future. For instance, we have a contributor in Seattle. Seattle is a
finalist in the 2013 Field Trip Day. If Seattle is chosen, you KNOW the innkeeper in Seattle who is involved in Go-Trippin /
Google’s Niantic Labs Field Trip will be capitalizing on this activity for her business. We don’t know what’s in store for the
future of Field Trip promotions, but as a Google supported program, we anticipate it’s going to be good!
