Volume 17, Issue 3
Fall 2012
From Your President
It’s HOT! Hopefully you are somewhere where the weather is a little more bearable, but if you are in our
hometown, it’s HOT!
In spite of the summer temps, our Alumni Association is moving right along thanks to so many of you. The 2012
Alumni Open House was what many called the “best yet!” We have to agree. We counted close to 375 ex-Colts in
the Old Gym (Heck, it was our ONLY gym!) on June 9. It was a great morning, complete with the much deserved
recognition of Distinguished Colt Alumni and the presentation of our 2012 Alumni Scholars, one of whom received
the first scholarship named for our founder and head cheerleader, Cathy Bontley Brown. In addition, the Golden
Anniversary Class of 1962 was there in force, looking and sounding amazing! They always were a special group!
PUT THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW! Next summer, because of late graduation and Father’s Day
weekend, our 2013 Alumni Open House will be Saturday, June 22! Same time, same place. More details
on that next year.
Less than a month after Open House, we christened an Alumni Association float for Arlington’s July 4th Parade.
Our entry was led by a real live Little Arlie, now owned by Donna and Jerry Potts, Class of 1963. Little Arlie was
sporting a beautiful new blanket and braided mane and tail. He
was a hit! Our canopied float carried past, present and future
Colts followed by our fantastic Alumni Band calling Colts to
attention as they played the Fight Song and Horse.
Now the summer will not be complete nor our new school year
started without our Homecoming Tailgate Party, September 7,
at 6pm BACK AT UTA MAVERICK STADIUM PARKING
LOT! YEA! GO COLTS! Look for our banner up close to the
entry gate to the field. There will be hot dogs and lemonade for
Alumni and their guests. Since we are always looking for new
members, we encourage everyone to bring a prospect. Although
it’s really a free event, just pretend that you need to bring a friend
who hasn’t joined yet for admission! It’s a wonderful time to see friends, to honor our Distinguished Colt Alumni
for 2012, and to have a delicious hot dog fresh off the grill! Don’t miss it!
So you can see, our Association is not only growing, we’re thriving! It’s up to you, however, to keep it going. Please
support our Association which in turn supports Arlington High School with your continuing gifts and presence.
And if you wonder if AHS still deserves support, read in this issue what the most
recent grads have to say about their days at Arlington High.

Distinguished Colt Alumni ~ 2012
CARI FITZGERALD COOK, CLASS OF 1970, and Life Member of the Alumni Association, was nominated by classmate
Jessica Anderson. After graduating from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1974, where she joined Delta Delta
Delta sorority, Cari tried her hand in the local retail business as the owner and operator of Tender Moments here in
Arlington. She has also worked in her family’s business, Fitzgerald Properties, as a property manager of office buildings
and warehouses.
In 1993, Cari found her professional niche when she went to work for the Tri-Delta sorority. She is currently
Executive Director of the Delta Delta Delta National Fraternity headquartered in Arlington, the CEO of the
Tri-Delta National House Corporation, and CEO of the Tri-Delta Center for Living, Learning and Lending.
Cari has been honored as a recipient of both the Kappa Alpha Order Interfraternal Spirit Award and the Association
of Fraternity Advisors Distinguished Service Award. In addition to working for Tri-Delta, Cari has volunteered as an
alumna advisor for the UTA chapter and served on their board of directors. Other volunteer areas include the Arlington
Junior Women’s Club and Arlington Junior League.
In 1999, Cari was the main force in establishing Tri-Delta as a partner with St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Since that
time, Cari’s foresight has led to funds surpassing $12 million for St. Jude—a feat unmatched by any other fraternal
organization.
Cari’s connection to Arlington High began way before her work on the Colt newspaper staff where she worked
primarily in advertising. This connection stretches over 50 years. Her parents, Harold and Anita, graduated in ’42 and
’45. Her aunt and uncle, Wanda and Charles Marshall, ’49 and ’51, were selected as Distinguished Colt Alumni in
2006. Her niece, Ashley Fitzgerald Watson and her late nephew Kaleb Fitzgerald both graduated in the 1990s.
CARI COOK, your family now holds the record with three members on the Distinguished Colts Honor Roll.

MIKE ENGER, CLASS OF 1974, was nominated by long time AHS math teacher Gay Friess Anderson, ’67. In his high
school days, Mike played football and baseball for the Colts as well as serving on Student Council and as student body
president his senior year.
Mike attained his BS in biology at UTA, then went on to UT Medical School in Galveston. He did his residency in
Family Practice at UT Southwestern in Wichita Falls. Mike joined Family Healthcare Associates in Arlington in 1985
and is affiliated with Arlington Memorial Hospital where he has chaired the Department of Family Medicine.
For over 20 years, Mike has served as team physician for the AHS Football Colts, following in the footsteps of
revered Dr. Kent Cherry, ’52, another Distinguished Colt Alumnus.
Mike was asked to be team physician for both the Lamar Vikings
and the Martin Warriors, but he declined. Only the Arlington Colts
would be a fit.
Many professional organizations count Mike as a member. At the
Tarrant County Medical Society, he has served on the executive
committee as former president of that group.
In addition to the football team, Mike’s loyalty to AHS caused
him to buy his home in the AHS district so his son Cole, Class of
2013, could know what it’s like to be an AHS Colt. Cole’s
membership in the Colt Band guarantees that his dad gives time
and energy to the Band Booster Club, serving as a parent sponser
and “band team physician” on many band trips.
Mike is a life member of the AHS Alumni Association and serves on the Alumni Board of Directors.
DR. MIKE ENGER, we applaud your selection as a Distinguished Colt Alumnus.

BUDDIE HRABAL, CLASS OF 1964, came to AHS with a love of music which was fostered by Miss Jane Ellis while
he was a member of the Choraliers and a stage hand for the choir department’s first ever
musical production, The King and I.
Compiled in part by Jerrell Womble
AHS Alumni Association
5
His musical interests started much earlier, however, when he started playing steel guitar at age nine. Buddie is one
of those lucky folks who has made his living doing what he loves. He has played with scores of musicians and artists
over the years. He played steel guitar on the soundtrack for the movie Tender Mercies—a movie he also appeared in.
Buddie has played at Casa Manana and at many Steel Guitar Jamborees. You can even see him on YouTube at the
International Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis. Buddie has worked with many house bands and is currently
playing with Country Night Live, an award-winning band.
His musical honors include the Will Rogers award from the Academy of Western Artists for Western Swing
Instrumentalist of the Year. He is a member of the Texas Steel Guitar Association and became a lifetime member of
the Cowtown Society of Western Music in 2009.
Since 1996, Buddie’s company—A-1 Lighting & Sound—has provided lighting and sound systems for events
nationwide. For several years, he has done the sound for our Alumni Association events, both Tailgate Party at
Homecoming and Alumni Open Houses in June. It sure has been nice for everyone in the room to hear everything
being said and sung!
Buddie’s accomplishments urged another Distinguished Colt Alumnus, Mike Wade, ’76, to nominate him.
One memorable moment at the 2012 Open House was Buddie’s solo rendition of our Alma Mater on his steel
guitar. Thank you, Distinguished Colt BUDDIE HRABAL, for spreading your talent far and wide and bringing it back
home.

DOLAND MANER, CLASS OF 1940, got to Arlington when both he and the town were young whippersnappers in 1931.
Arlington’s population then was 3000. At AHS, Doland was manager of the 1939 District Champs which he remembers
as AHS’ first football championship. Doland’s class of 99 students, which graduated from the original Arlington High
on Cooper and Abram, were the first to use the “new” gym for the ceremony. The main building and that gym are
part of the UTA campus today. (When you drive by, notice the memorial plaque on the corner of Border and Cooper
which commemorates the site of the first Arlington High School.)
After graduation, Doland worked for Southern Ornamental Iron Works, later known as Southern Industrial Steel
Company, which grew to be the largest company of its kind in the United States. After his service in the U.S. Navy
from 1942 to 1946, Doland returned to Arlington and rejoined the company. From then until his retirement in 1984,
Doland worked his way up through all departments—except for Accounting—finally serving as President and Chairman
of the Board.
In 1967, Doland began his four terms on the Arlington City Council where he worked with another Distinguished
Colt, Mayor Tom Vandergriff, ’43, to bring the Texas Rangers baseball team to Arlington. Doland served on the
Board of our Alumni Association for several years and has been such a valued Board member of the Arlington
Historical Society for 16 years that he was nominated for Distinguished Colt by Geraldine Nash Mills, ’59, Executive
Director of that Society and a Distinguished Colt Alumna for 2011.
Doland and his late wife Dorothy had two sons, Doug who graduated as valedictorian from Sam Houston and
Doland, Jr. who “got it right” and graduated from AHS in 1966.
Congratulations to a fine man and a deserving Distinguished Colt Alumnus: DOLAND MANER.

AHS Alumni Association
Alumni Scholars ~ 2012
FOR THE FIRST TIME, our Association has given six $1,000 scholarships to deserving graduates. Since 2003, our Association has granted scholarships worth $40,200 to 41 new grads. These six outstanding Colts from the CLASS OF 2012
share in their own words where they will begin their college careers and what their majors will be. From their
applications and their responses to questionnaires from Scholarship Chair Jannette Workman, we can see the special
highlights from their AHS lives which they will always remember. Each of them listed three words which for them
best describe campus life at AHS. The Association thanks Peggy Martin and her committee of teachers—all AHS
grads themselves—who poured over several dozen applications from really terrific kids to winnow the list to these
brand new alumni. Thanks to membership dues, donations and the purchase of Alumni caps, shirts, rocks and pins,
YOU are helping send some spectacular Colts to college.

In her own words: Plan A is to go into the FBI and work as a profiler. Plan B is to open my own bakery because I
love to bake and create delicious pastries. All the teachers love Arlington High and would stay here forever if they
could. Even those who didn’t graduate from AHS love this school. That love showed me as a freshman what a
wonderful school I had found. I’ve never talked to anyone from another high school who said that people at their
school felt the way we do about our school. The environment and dynamics here are unlike any other. I love this
school and will be sad to leave, but I will never forget it. I can’t. AHS has been a huge part of my life for too long. This
school has been alive and well for one hundred years and will be for at least one hundred more.

· TRANSFORMING/SUPPORTIVE/FULFILLING · FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE CATHY BONTLEY BROWN SCHOLARSHIP
In her own words: Although as a junior I made both the Choraliers and the varsity soccer team, I was faced with
having to choose one because they were scheduled at the same time. My coach and choir director worked together to
allow me to alternate attendance. I was the first soccer player to have a conflict in which I shared a class period with
another course. This created a road for younger players to follow when faced with a choice between two loves. At
TCU, I will study within the Honors College program and my double major will allow me to pursue my dream to be
a doctor and to stay involved in sports.

time. All my life my grandparents have ingrained in me how important college is. During the Cultural Revolution in
China, my grandparents were persecuted for being students and daring to pursue an education that Mao thought was
tainted by Western influences. Thus, instead of attending school every day, they worked at the rice paddies of their
concentration camps. For me, college isn’t just about getting a degree or securing my future. It is the bridge to my
past as I live out the dream that my grandparents could not.

In her own words: Having come from a Christian private school, I am very thankful to have gotten to taste what the
real world is like at Arlington High. Despite the differences in culture, the sense of absolute community at AHS is
second to none. While many high schools are renowned for having impenetrable cliques, the sense of unity and
acceptance at my school is overwheming. While natural groups do form, they are not exclusive nor are they too good
for anyone else. When I walk down the halls of Arlington High, I swear there is a tangible feeling of tolerant easiness
which will always feel like home.

FOOTBALL, 47-16 · FIASCO/RESOURCES/WELCOMING
In his own words: Fiasco—temporaries relocated, destroyed cafeteria, home games at Lamar; Resources—the
library, the willingness of many teachers who spend their lunch breaks, Saturdays, and time after school to tutor
students; Welcoming—Ms. Young’s “Colt Country Hype” not only excited students, but also rubbed off on the AHS
staff. Teachers are full of school spirit and they influence students to participate. The Green and White blood oozing
from Arlington High School’s committed staff and faculty, the die-heartedness of the AHS Alumni, and the united
Colt Country student body have made AHS the best high school experience I could have had. How sweet it REALLY is
to be in Colt Country!

ASSISTANCE AND LEADERSHIP PROGRAM · TRADITION/DIVERSITY/EXCELLENCE
In her own words: Walking down the halls of AHS brings a sense of honor and pride knowing that my dad, his five
siblings and my sister walked down the same hallways. Hearing the alma mater and fight song, watching the football
team, hearing the band and orchestra all remind me that those things will never change. We can take pride in that.
AHS’ diverse student population enables us to learn, to grow and to respect each other’s cultures. We are able to
come together and perform as one. Our diversity is what brings us together to become AHS. Students can pick their
place and be part of an excellent organization. I am so proud to be part of a school that excels in all areas.
